More than 100 years ago, Chinese people built the first railway completely by themselves, with Zhan Tianyou working as the chief engineer.
Zhan Tianyou, known as the “father of China’s railway”, was born in 1861 in Guangdong Province and passed away in 1919. In 1872, 11-year-old Zhan Tianyou went to America to study Western technology. Six years later, he entered Yale University. After his graduation in1881, Zhan returned to China.
Of all his great achievements, the most important one is the building of the Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway. Although there were lots of difficulties, he spent about four years finishing the railway.
Though Zhan has been dead for over 100 years, his story will inspire young people forever. From him, we should learn to be brave in the face of difficulties. Also, his spirits of loving his motherland and working hard are really admirable.
