More than three months have passed since Australia banned (禁止) social media for under-16s. How has life changed for teenagers there? The Guardian recently interviewed four of them to find out.
Emma Williams
I’ll turn 16 in a few weeks, so I’m not too worried about the ban. Most of my friends are older than me. Some of them save funny short dramas and show them to me in person. We usually have a good laugh together. The only “trouble” I’ve noticed is that I’m sometimes out of the loop. I don’t always understand the memes (梗) my friends are talking about.
Pia Monti
The ban doesn’t really affect (影响) me because I only add my real-life friends on social media. I can still have fun with them in person. When I was younger, I couldn’t wait to join social media. Now, I don’t really care. I’ve realized that I’m able to connect with my friends without using social media.
Ewan Buchanan
On the last day before the ban took effect, everyone was busy exchanging (交换) phone numbers. Before the ban, very few of us did this. I’ve developed closer friendships with people I used to just greet casually. Before, I was one of the few without social media and was left out. What a happy accident!
Grace Guo
The ban only prevents us from having social media accounts (账号), I can still search for and watch videos on YouTube. The ban has made me realize that we sometimes rely too much on social media. There are plenty of other ways to relax and stay connected. Since I can’t use apps like Instagram, I’ve started texting more. But I haven’t been using technology as much since the ban came into effect.

Uncle Tom was a tall, gentle, and honest man. He lived with his wife and children on a farm in Kentucky. His master, Mr Shelby, was generally kind, but he had serious money problems. To pay his debts, he made a painful decision: he would sell two of his slaves, and Uncle Tom was one of them.
When Tom heard the news, his heart was filled with sadness. He loved his family deeply and hated to leave them. Yet he was quiet and patient, and he never thought of fighting against his master or running away in a secret way. He believed he should keep his word and behave in an honest way, even in hard times.
His wife cried and begged him to escape to the northern states, where slavery (奴隶制) was against the law. “We can live as free people together,” she said. But Tom shook his head softly.
“If I run away, they will catch other poor slaves to take my place,” he replied. “I cannot do that. I must go. I will trust God, and maybe one day we will meet again.”
Early the next morning, Tom was led away. He said goodbye to his family quietly, with tears in his eyes. He stepped onto the boat, watching his home and his loved ones become smaller and smaller until they disappeared. Tom did not know what kind of life was waiting for him. He did not know who his next master would be. But deep in his heart, he still held kindness and hope. He would remain honest and strong, no matter what difficulties lay ahead.

Sigiriya is an ancient rock city in central Sri Lanka. It sits on a huge rock that rises high above the green countryside. Few young students know much about this special place, but it has attracted historians and visitors for hundreds of years.
Long ago, Sigiriya was built as a strong capital city. A king made it his home and built many beautiful palaces and gardens around the rock. At that time, the city was popular for rich culture and art. People from different places came to live and work there. The number of people increased very fast, and the city became an important center of culture and business.
However, as time passed, the capital moved to other areas. People left little by little. Fewer people lived in Sigiriya after that, and the great city was forgotten. For many years, forests grew around it, and only local people knew about the ruins.
In modern times, Sigiriya has become famous again. Researchers have studied its history carefully, and they have learned much about the ancient people’s lifestyle and culture. The government has protected the area well, and it has become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Today, few people live near the ancient rock. Most of the population is made up of farmers and local workers. The culture of the area has mixed old traditions and simple daily life. Although the city is no longer busy, its great past has left a strong mark on the world.
Sigiriya has stood for over 1,500 years. It has seen the rise and fall of a great city. It tells people that history, geography and changes in population can shape a place completely.
