Sports City
This sporting center, once the training ground for top athletes, now consists of empty swimming pools and overgrown tracks. However, that doesn’t mean it has gone unused. In a city where public green space is a rare thing, the center has become a popular spot for locals to have picnics, read books, and simply relax in the shade.
Ras Angela
Marked with a sculpture of the continent, it is a peaceful spot to enjoy a picnic and beautiful ocean views. You can also lay out your towel on the nearby sandy beach and take a swim in the perfectly blue water.

I can’t really remember a time when I haven’t panicked about what I’m doing with my life. After high school, I enrolled in a social work degree, only to drop out a semester later. I then tried nursing, but faced the same problem. At 19, I found it impossible to decide what career I wanted for the rest of my life.
Most recently, I had a sad realisation at a birthday dinner that I was falling behind. I was 29, unmarried, and living with my parents, while my friends were getting married and buying houses. When you’re surrounded by those kinds of life events, it’s hard not to feel like you’ve gone wrong somewhere.
Adulthood is hard, and the gap between adolescence and adulthood is even harder. In the last six months, I’ve tried to embrace the chaos and near-failure of my late 20s. But it turns out there’s a real, sociological name for this feeling so many of us are having — Odyssey Years.
The term refers to the decade of wandering that usually occurs between the ages of 20 and 35. It centres on the idea that exploring is just as important as settling down. People should use these key years to try things out, take risks and fail repeatedly. It’s about engaging with the world, learning about other cultures, discovering your skills and interests, and exploring potential careers. In short, it’s about discovering yourself.
The concept made me feel validated in all those weird, uncomfortable feelings I was having and reassured me that there was nothing wrong with me.
Although I went home after that birthday dinner and cried myself to sleep, I woke up the next day knowing that being alone was not a problem. It was simply another adventure I was having.
After years of worrying that I was doing life wrong, I’ve realised that an entire generation is going through the same crisis. Maybe it’s time we embrace that.
24. Why does the author mention her college dropouts?
A. To show her lack of persistence in goals.
B. To explain why she still lives with parents.
C. To illustrate the confusion of Odyssey Years.
D. To criticize how Odyssey Years influence her.
25. Which person is experiencing the “Odyssey Years”?
A. A middle-aged clerk returning to school.
B. A graduate following a fixed career plan.
C. A teen choosing a major with parental guidance.
D. A young adult trying jobs before finding passion.
26. What does the underlined word “validated” in Para. 5 mean?
A. Justified. B. Challenged. C. Overlooked. D. Treasured.
27. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. She takes comfort in shared struggle. B. Her generation is unique in history.
C. She has fully recovered from anxiety. D. People should never compare with others.
C
Every three years, the OECD releases the results of the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), which measures the abilities of 15-year-olds. The latest results are worrying.
In the 23 OECD-member countries, average scores peaked around 2012 and have fallen ever since. In maths and reading, 15-year-olds now perform at levels that might have been achieved by 14-year-olds a decade ago. Low-performing students are falling further behind, and the gap between low- and high-performing students is the largest ever recorded by PISA.
The pandemic may partly explain the decline. Students taking this year’s PISA tests were about ten when Covid-19 disrupted schooling, possibly affecting them more than older students. Its effects may persist: school absences remain higher than before, and missing lessons can significantly hurt academic performance.
Technology is another concern, especially for reading. Andreas Schleicher, head of education at the OECD, argues technology is expected to offer convenience but phones and social media give young people less practice making sense of complex texts. More test-takers are now classed as “hasty readers”, who rush through reading tests while getting many answers wrong. Screens are clearly diverting children from books. Just 37% of nine-year-olds in America say they read for pleasure, down from nearly 60% in the 1990s. Declining literacy (读写能力) could also hurt performance in maths and science.
Schools also face growing challenges. Schleicher worries that excessive parental involvement may pressure schools to lower their standards and accept “mediocre (平庸的) work”. Some anti-authority trends on social media may be making students less willing to follow teachers’ instructions, leaving schools more chaotic. In one recent survey, teachers reported that the amount of time they spend on classroom discipline is creeping up.
Test scores do not define a person. Yet educational achievement is strongly associated with higher earnings, better health and longer lives. Nationally, improvements in a country’s braininess appear to track closely with later bursts of economic growth; economist Ludger Woessmann finds that increasing PISA test scores by 25 points could push up annual GDP growth by half a percentage point. Anyone who cares about the youth of today — and in turn the societies of tomorrow — ought to be alarmed.
28. What do the latest PISA results show?
A. Test scores are falling and gaps are widening.
B. The education gap between countries is narrowing.
C. Younger students outperform older ones in reading.
D. High- and low-performing students are closer in ability.
29. Which view of technology would Schleicher most likely support?
A. Screens are making more people illiterate.
B. Students have developed fast reading skills.
C. Technology should have benefited learning.
D. Academic pressure can be reduced by technology.
30. What is implied about schools in paragraph 5?
A. They prefer social media to traditional books.
B. They have managed to resist parental pressure.
C. They face technological and pandemic challenges.
D. They are losing control over standards and order.
31. What is the author’s main purpose in writing the text?
A. To explain why PISA tests are changing.
B. To argue that technology should leave classrooms.
C. To warn about the wider effects of declining grades.
D. To compare educational problems across OECD countries.
D
Rain sounds may be calming for humans, but for plants, the sound of droplets is more like an annoying morning alarm. As water falls onto soil or into water, the vibrations (震动) are far stronger underground than on the surface, but new research suggests plants take advantage of this wake-up call.
A study published in Scientific Reports exposed about 8,000 submerged rice seeds to rain sounds and found they germinated (发芽) between 30 and 40 percent faster than seeds kept in quiet but otherwise identical conditions. The results mark the first direct evidence that plants sense and respond to sounds in their environment, and researchers say it’s likely that seeds from other plant species behave in the same way.
To understand how seeds can “hear” the rain, scientists looked closely at tiny structures inside plant cells called statoliths. Normally, these statoliths rest quietly at the bottom of the cells due to gravity. However, Makris theorized that these structures also act as acoustic (声学的) sensors. When heavy raindrops hit the soil or water surface, they send powerful sound waves strong enough to shake the seed and bounce the statoliths around inside the cells, sending a signal to the seed that water has arrived and waking it up and begin the germination process.
“It is a little bit of an unusual effect that only an interdisciplinary effort between acoustic and plant scientists could have uncovered”, says study lead author Nicholas C. Makris at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “I think this paper is a really significant advance in our understanding of how plants respond to the energy produced by sounds in their environment,” says Heidi Appel, a biologist at the University of Houston. Researchers hope these findings will be an “aha! moment” for future scientists, raising new possibilities that urge researchers to look beyond the effects of rain itself.
32. What caused the different germination rates among the rice seeds in the study?
A. The type of seeds. B. The depth of the soil.
C. The amount of water. D. The exposure to sound.
33. Which of the following best outlines the process of a seed being “awoken” by the rain according to the text?
① The seed knows water is coming.
② Statoliths are triggered to bounce.
③ Heavy raindrops hit the soil surface.
④ The seed wakes up and begins to grow.
⑤ Powerful sound movements travel underground.
A. ③-②-⑤-①-④ B. ③-⑤-②-①-④ C. ①-③-⑤-②-④ D. ①-②-③-⑤-④
34. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. The finding has revolutionized farming.
B. Plant research now depends on acoustics.
C. Plants may respond to other natural sounds.
D. Rain sounds are essential for plants’ growth.
35. What is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Why Plants Need Rain B. Ear in the Ground
C. Wake-up Call for Rice D. Secrets of Plant Cells

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Barney had always felt like the odd one out at school. He was quiet and often found it difficult to join conversations, so he had few close friends. While almost every student owned a B-bot, a smart robot that could connect to the Internet, Barney was one of the few who did not. His father finally bought him one for his birthday. Its name was Ron.
Unfortunately, Ron was different from other B-bots. He was slow to understand social situations. Worse still, he often said the wrong thing at the wrong time. At first, Barney found Ron amusing. But as his classmates showed off their clever B-bots, Barney became self-conscious.
The other students laughed at Ron’s mistakes and called him a “broken” B-bot. Some even refused to let Ron join their games. They also teased (嘲弄) Barney for having such a strange B-bot. Barney tried to ignore them, but he became increasingly embarrassed. Ron noticed this and stayed close to Barney, even though he did not know how to make things better.
Seeing Barney struggle to make friends, Ron tried to help, but often misunderstood social situations. Once, he loudly announced, “Barney has no friends nearby,” making everyone laugh.
One afternoon, things went too far. Barney was talking to some classmates when Ron suddenly announced, “Attention, everyone! Barney needs friends! Please raise your hand if you want to be his friend. Don’t be shy — Barney is waiting!” Several students burst into laughter. Barney’s face burned with embarrassment.
“Why can’t you be like the other B-bots?” Barney shouted. “I wish I had never gotten you!” He stormed off, leaving Ron behind.
That evening, Barney noticed that Ron was not at home. Worried that he might still be at school, he hurried back. At the playground, he heard a faint electronic beep (嘟嘟声) and followed the sound. He found Ron sitting alone on a bench.
Ron was sitting there, working on another message. On his screen were several new versions, each an awkward attempt to help Barney make friends. One simply read, “Maybe I can be your friend first.” Ron kept trying, even after Barney had shouted at him. Barney stood quietly behind him, watching the screen.

【答案】17. C 18. B 19. C 20. B
【解析】
【原文】 A: On October 11th, over 1,600 athletes kicked off the 2025 Ironman World Championship triathlon in Hawaii. While 60 competitors failed to finish, 80-year-old Natalie Grabow made history as the oldest woman ever to complete the race, marking her 11th Ironman finish. Grabow has long been athletic. But when she was growing up, girls were more likely to be seen as cheerleaders than as athletes. When her kids were young, she began playing tennis. Then she took up running when she went back to work. After a while, some of her running buddies began to take part in triathlons. Grabow was also interested, so she decided to learn to swim. That's pretty impressive for a woman who couldn't swim until she was 59. Twenty years ago, she did her first half Ironman, and by her early 60s she qualified for the world championship. This year, racing alone in her age group, but during the same harsh conditions, she finished in 16 hours, 45 minutes, 26 seconds. She was so happy that she could still race in this sport at her age — tired but grateful. She plans to compete in at least 2 half Ironman races next year.

【答案】24. C 25. D 26. A 27. A

【答案】28. A 29. C 30. D 31. C

【答案】32. D 33. B 34. C 35. B

【导语】文章主要介绍一项新研究:植物可感知雨声并借此加快种子发芽的相关原理与意义。
【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“A study published in Scientific Reports exposed about 8,000 submerged rice seeds to rain sounds and found they germinated (发芽) between 30 and 40 percent faster than seeds kept in quiet but otherwise identical conditions.(发表在《科学报告》上的一项研究将约8000颗浸水稻种置于雨声环境下,发现它们的发芽速度比安静环境、其余条件完全相同的种子快30%至40%。)” 可知,两组种子唯一变量是是否接触声音,所以造成发芽率差异的是声音刺激。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“When heavy raindrops hit the soil or water surface, they send powerful sound waves strong enough to shake the seed and bounce the statoliths around inside the cells, sending a signal to the seed that water has arrived and waking it up and begin the germination process.(当大雨滴击打土壤或水面时,会产生强大声波,足以震动种子,使细胞内的平衡石晃动,向种子传递水已到来的信号,唤醒种子并开启发芽过程。)”
根据最后一段中的“I think this paper is a really significant advance in our understanding of how plants respond to the energy produced by sounds in their environment... raising new possibilities that urge researchers to look beyond the effects of rain itself.(我认为该论文极大推进了我们对植物如何响应环境中声音能量的认知……开辟新思路,促使研究者不只局限于雨水本身的影响。)” 可推断,植物或许也能对其他自然声音作出反应。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段中的“Rain sounds may be calming for humans, but for plants, the sound of droplets is more like an annoying morning alarm. As water falls onto soil or into water, the vibrations (震动) are far stronger underground than on the surface, but new research suggests plants take advantage of this wake-up call.(雨声对人类来说或许令人平静,但对植物而言,雨滴声更像恼人的晨间闹钟。当雨水落在土壤或水面时,地下的震动比地表强烈得多,但新研究表明植物会利用这个唤醒信号。)” 以及全文内容可知,文章核心讲述植物可以感知地下传来的雨滴声波信号,如同地下长了耳朵,因此标题为“地下的耳朵”。

第二节(满分25分)
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1: With mixed feelings, Barney slowly sat down beside Ron.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: The next morning, Barney entered the classroom proudly with his friend, Ron.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】例文:
With mixed feelings, Barney slowly sat down beside Ron. He looked at the messages and realized how hard Ron had tried to help him. Although Ron often made mistakes, he had never laughed at Barney or left him alone. Instead, he had stayed by Barney’s side when everyone else turned away. Barney gently touched Ron’s arm and said, “I’m sorry, Ron.” Ron’s screen lit up with a smile. Barney realized that he already had a friend who truly cared about him.
The next morning, Barney entered the classroom proudly with his friend, Ron. When some classmates laughed at Ron, Barney did not hide or walk away. Instead, he stayed beside Ron and joined the others in a game. Ron still made a few silly mistakes, but Barney laughed and helped him try again. Gradually, the classmates stopped teasing them and began to accept Ron. Barney no longer cared whether his B-bot was as clever as the others’. He had learned that friendship was not about being perfect or fitting in, but about staying by someone’s side and accepting them for who they were.
