AI Learning System: Pros and Cons
To promote students’ academic efficiency, our school has introduced an AI learning system to assist daily studies, which has brought obvious changes to students’ learning. I am writing to share my views on the phenomenon for our school English newspaper.
Undeniably, the advanced system provides personalized learning resources and accurately identifies students’ weak points, effectively helping us improve learning outcomes. However, it also brings negative effects. A number of students tend to rely heavily on instant answers provided by the system, which weakens their awareness of independent thinking.
In my view, we should make rational use of this technological tool. It ought to serve as a useful reference instead of replacing our own thinking and practice.

The committee’s president saw how scared I was and she encouraged me to speak. She stepped beside me softly, saying it was totally normal to feel nervous and no one would laugh at my imperfect speech. She told me to slow down my breathing and focus only on my own ideas instead of others’ eyes. After the debate, I buried myself in daily practice. Every evening, I read my draft aloud before the mirror, correcting shaky tones and awkward body movements. My friends stayed with me to listen and gave patient feedback to cheer me up. Day by day, my panic faded away little by little.
By the end of the week, I was finally able to stand up and speak like I had always wanted to. I held my head high and delivered my opinion fluently with a steady voice, making my points fully understood. Loud warm applause filled the whole room the second I finished my words. At that moment, a sense of pride washed over me. This journey taught me true courage does not mean having no fear, but choosing to keep trying even when fear is deep inside you.

Last weekend, former Google CEO Eric Schmidt faced repeated boos (倒彩) during his speech to about 10,000 University of Arizona graduates on the great changes brought about by AI. A similar response met Scott Borchetta, the CEO of Big Machine Records, when he spoke to the graduating class of Middle Tennessee State University about how AI is helping the music industry.
“At the beginning we were excited about it,” said Kareen Gill, a University of Arizona political-science graduate. “But now, we don’t want it messing with the jobs we’ve worked four hard years to qualify for.” Sami Wargo, a new graduate from Middle Tennessee State University, also pointed out that AI has cut many entry-level jobs because AI is replacing many of those jobs.
Still, not every speaker received negative feedback over AI-related topics. When CleanHarbors founder Alan McKim spoke at the Northeastern University commencement, he appealed to the graduates to accept AI, but warned, “Your character will matter more than your code (代码).” No boos were heard in the audience.
As Dave Lee wrote in Bloomberg, “For any commencement speaker in 2026, no conversation about the future could be credible without mentioning AI. But in front of today’s graduates, striking the right tone is hard. They face highly uncertain job markets and are filled with anxiety, a fact that cannot be ignored in public speeches.”
To ease graduates’ widespread worries, a senior US Department of Labor official released a public statement. He said AI is a technological trend and blind resistance makes no sense. The government will offer targeted training for new graduates to improve their skills and help them fit the changing job market. He added AI is a tool for human progress instead of a replacement for humans, and young people should learn to compete and coexist with AI rationally.
24. Why did many graduates boo the AI-related speeches?
A. They found AI technology useless in daily life.
B. AI is threatening their future career opportunities.
C. The speakers knew little about university education.
D. They are completely unwilling to accept new technology.
25. What can we infer from Alan McKim’s speech?
A. Personal qualities still outweigh technical skills in the AI era.
B. Graduates should master coding skills to compete with AI.
C. AI will finally replace human work in most industries.
D. Few students agree to apply AI to future work.
26. What is Dave Lee’s advice for commencement speakers?
A. Stress the harmful sides of AI.
B. Paint a hopeful picture of an AI-driven future.
C. Keep AI out of their speeches.
D. Consider graduates’ anxious state.
27. What is the US Labor official’s attitude towards AI?
A. Doubtful. B. Opposed. C. Objective. D. Uncertain.

Plants can detect potential dangers by means of smell. However, their ability to recognize threats varies. New research indicates that young leaves of corn plants are far more sensitive to danger signals than mature ones.
Lei Wang, a plant biologist at the University of Bern in Switzerland, explains that plants can sense approaching risks and activate their defense systems in advance. He and his colleagues published the new findings in Current Biology.
Many plants strengthen their chemical defenses when facing insect attacks. One important way for plants to perceive threats is through scent (气味). They are capable of detecting scent molecules (分子) in the air, which may come from insects’ saliva (口水) or nearby damaged plants.
Nevertheless, scientists have not yet clarified which parts of plants are responsible for detecting dangers, as plants have no noses. They also know little about the internal mechanism by which plants process danger signals. Wang’s team intended to explore this warning system in corn. However, they ran into an unexpected obstacle early on: when exposed to threat-related scents, fully grown corn leaves showed almost no detectable response.
The researchers then focused on young leaves instead. Lab experiments showed that young corn leaves performed much better in sensing dangers than older ones, with a stronger reaction to a typical danger-signaling scent, which smells like freshly cut grass. The reason is still unclear. Being in the early growth stage, young leaves need extra defense, so it may be a natural protection for these more susceptible young leaves. Besides, young leaves, usually growing at the top of plants, might be more exposed to scents carried over long distances. These assumptions require further study.
Wang hopes his research will contribute to the breeding of insect-resistant crops, which will gradually reduce the use of poisonous pesticides in agriculture. “My parents are farmers,” Wang says. “This research is not just to satisfy curiosity. I truly expect to solve some practical agricultural problems.”
28. What is special about young corn leaves according to the new research?
A. They give off warning scents. B. They react better to danger signals.
C. They grow faster than mature leaves. D. They attract insects from long distances.
29. What problem did Wang’s team meet at first?
A. Corn plants failed to grow well.
B. Insects’ saliva damaged the young leaves.
C. Danger-related scents were hard to detect.
D. Mature leaves reacted little to warning smells.
30. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “susceptible” in paragraph 5?
A. Slow to grow. B. Hard to reach. C. Easily harmed. D. Quickly recovered.
31. What does Wang expect from this research?
A. It may reveal how plants process danger signals.
B. It may explain corn’s faster growth in fields.
C. It may make pesticide use much more efficient.
D. It may develop insect-tolerant crops for green farming.
D
Many popular programs promise to increase happiness, but they often require more time and effort than busy people can manage. As a result, most of us find it hard to stick to such demanding routines. This raises an important question: what if becoming happier did not call for a complete change in lifestyle? What if it could start with simple, brief actions that are easy to carry out?
To explore the possibility, researchers launched a global online study known as the Big Joy Project, where a large number of participants were asked to complete a daily “micro-act” — a short, easy activity designed to build joy. These acts included listing things they felt grateful for, performing an act of kindness, or watching an inspiring video. Each day, people reported how they felt both before and after the activity, which allowed researchers to track changes in their emotions.
The results, based on data from participants from more than 200 countries and regions, showed encouraging changes. After only one week, most people reported noticeable improvements: they experienced more positive feelings, less stress, and even better sleep and physical health. Moreover, the study showed a direct connection between effort and outcome — the more micro-acts a person completed, the greater their increase in happiness turned out to be.
Interestingly, these benefits reached everyone, including those facing adversities in life. People with fewer resources or lower social status often reported an even stronger sense of well-being. The project also succeeded in promoting “prosocial” behavior (亲社会行为) — the natural desire to help others and connect with the community. In particular, groups that initially showed less prosocial tendency, such as those in less wealthy regions, demonstrated the most significant growth in this respect.
The study suggests that happiness does not necessarily depend on major achievements or external events. Instead, small but intentional acts — such as giving thanks, offering kindness, or taking a moment to appreciate the world — can help individuals actively shape their own emotional well-being. In today’s fast-paced world, these micro-moments of joy provide a practical and powerful way to help people feel lighter, more connected and more satisfied with life.
32. Why was the Big Joy Project launched?
A. To compare different acts of kindness.
B. To seek an easier way to enhance happiness.
C. To test popular long-term happiness programs.
D. To promote major changes in people’s lifestyles.
33. What can we learn about the study results?
A. Small acts made a difference. B. Happier people did more micro-acts.
C. Prosocial growth centered on rich regions. D. Higher status contributed to stronger gains.
34. What is the main function of paragraph 4?
A. To draw the core conclusion. B. To show the study’s theoretical basis.
C. To present further findings. D. To offer practical suggestions.
35. Which of the following might be the best title for the passage?
A. Prosocial Behavior: A Path to Happiness
B. Micro-Acts: Small Steps to Greater Happiness
C. Big Joy Project: Ways to Ease Life Adversities
D. Life Adversities: Tests for Human Happiness

Stargazing (观星) offers a breathtaking connection to the universe, yet many people miss out on this experience due to a few easily overlooked factors. Anyone can enjoy an unforgettable journey through the universe. 36
Avoid light pollution.
Light pollution results from the overused or poorly directed artificial light produced by cities, streetlights, buildings, and vehicles. It creates a glowing mist that hides faint stars and other objects in the sky. No stargazer wants such an obstacle to spoil the view. 37 If you’re observing from home, consider using professional instruments that direct light downward.
Consider the moon.
The moon, our closest neighbor in space, goes through a monthly cycle of phases that greatly affect stargazing conditions. The best time to observe the stars is during the new moon, when the moon is positioned between the Earth and the Sun and remains invisible, leaving the sky at its darkest. 38
Height matters.
To get a clear view of the sky, it’s important to choose a location free from surrounding buildings. 39 If traveling to the countryside isn’t an option, try to get to a higher spot. The rooftop of a tall building, for instance, can help you rise above nearby structures and improve your view. Look for accessible buildings in your area that might offer this advantage. 40
Timing plays a key role in what you’ll see in the night sky. Winter generally offers the clearest skies because cold air holds less moisture — just remember to dress warmly. Summer skies bring a different set of star groups and often present a stunning view of the Milky Way. Beginners may find dusk, just after sunset, a good time to start, while serious stargazers with better equipment often prefer the late-night hours.
A. Pick the right time.
B. Take account of the season.
C. Rural areas are ideal for this.
D. All you need is a little preparation and knowledge.
E. Using a telescope can greatly enhance your viewing experience.
F. It’s best to avoid nights with a full moon for better star visibility.
G. If possible, visit a dark park that is specially meant for stargazing.

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My biggest fear has always been public speaking. At 7 years old, the worst thing my parents could ask of me was to talk to someone outside of my immediate family, and presenting in front of my class was a nightmare.
As I grew up, I started to notice my fear was affecting my health and social life. I was only 14, yet the idea of a class presentation made me lose sleep and I had a hard time meeting new people and making friends.
I felt upset. It seemed impossible for me to get over such fear. I admitted defeat and made peace with knowing I just wasn’t good at public speaking. Deep down I knew it wasn’t a permanent fact — I was always just too scared to try.
Two shameful years went by and just when I thought I was fine with my inability to communicate in front of people, my school announced the start of that year’s Model United Nations competition. Model UN consisted of several mock trials during a week-long span, where students would assume a role and debate in front of others.
My friends had been a part of Model UN for years and had the best times when they participated. I wanted to join, but I knew I would freeze on the spot. I was tired of missing out on moments with my friends, so I made an impulsive (冲动的) out-of-character decision and joined the club at the last minute.
The first day was the worst. I was assigned an important role, and the debate would have been dull if I didn’t participate, so I tried my best to say something. When I stood up to read my opening speech, I froze. I imagined that moment many times, and I was hoping I’d suddenly be able to speak clearly, but the reality was far off from my dream. I didn’t pronounce a single word clearly and nobody understood my argument.
