Shanya Gill, a middle schooler from San Jose, California, won the top award in the Thermo Fisher Scientific Junior Innovators Challenge (TFSJIC) for designing a fire detection system that is superior to existing ones, as stated in the press release.
Shanya’s inspiration came after a fire destroyed a restaurant in her neighborhood during the summer of 2022, reported The Washington Post. “I had never really experienced something like that before,” she told The Washington Post about the early morning fire at Holder’s Country Inn, which started in the kitchen. “They had smoke detectors, and yet it still burned down,” she added.
After she studied fire statistics, Shanya spent over a year developing a fire detection system that she believes could have prevented the fire. Unlike traditional smoke detectors that sense active fires from the smoke in the air, Shanya’s thermal imaging device is designed to stop fires from occurring.
With a thermal camera and a Raspberry Pi, a tiny computer, the device detects when a heat source has been left unattended for ten minutes and sends a text message warning. Creating the prototype was difficult and the hardest part was the programming. “I had two designs, and my first design completely failed,” she said. The final device outperforms smoke detectors in speed and accuracy. Shanya wants to bring the costs down to make it even more common than hardwired smoke detectors.
“Shanya saw a problem, went after it and tried to solve it, and that’s what we need to encourage in all young people,” said Maya Ajmera, president and CEO of Society for Science. She also highlighted the significance of supporting individuals, especially girls and kids of color, in STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) fields, as research indicates that many young people drop out of these areas.
4. What motivated Shanya to develop her fire detection system?
A. Her experience of a destructive fire.
B. Her interest in computer programming.
C. Her desire to win the science award.
D. Her goal to improve STEM education for girls.
5. What is an advantage of Shanya’s invention?
A. It consists of two parts that are easier to operate.
B. It can send out a warning against a potential fire.
C. It can detect active fires from the smoke in the air.
D. It functions when a fire breaks out within 10 minutes.
6. What can we know about Shanya from the text?
A. She is persistent and creative.
B. Her device is cheaper than previous ones.
C. Her invention is widely used now.
D. She invented the device just for the award.
7. What is the text mainly about?
A. A fire detection system is upgraded.
B. A middle schooler shines in TFSJIC.
C. The TFSJIC ends with glory and promise.
D. Shanya Gill inspires the disadvantaged youth.

On paper, hydrogen (氢气) looks like a dream fuel. In practice, things are harder. Storing meaningful quantities of hydrogen gas requires compressing (压缩) it several hundred times. Turning it into a liquid state is another option, but one that requires cooling the stuff to −253℃. Either process requires rugged tanks. Over time, hydrogen gas can pass slowly into metals, weakening them and potentially causing damage. Tanks must be built from special materials designed to avoid this breakdown.
Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute led by Marcus Vogt think that supplying hydrogen in paste form (糊状) offers a way around some of its limitations. They have been experimenting with a chemical compound (化合物) that can be pumped into a container and then persuaded to give off its hydrogen on demand.
Their invention, which they nickname “powerpaste”, looks like toothpaste. Its main component is magnesium hydride, a compound that when introduced to water, reacts with it to form hydrogen and magnesium hydroxide. The escaped hydrogen can then be redirected into a fuel container, where it reacts with oxygen from the air to generate electric power. The magnesium hydroxide waste is emptied from the reactor automatically.
Dr Vogt’s invention offers several advantages over batteries, petrol and more traditional ways of dealing with hydrogen. One is that it can store more energy per litre and per kilogram than batteries or petrol. A second is the simplicity of refilling, which is simply a matter of replacing an empty container of paste with a full one, and topping up the water, which is stored in a separate tank. A third advantage is that, unlike a battery, the paste does not gradually lose its stored energy if it is left on the shelf. Moreover, the paste itself is harmless, and so are the reaction’s by-products.
But there are still more to work through. Magnesium hydride reacts only slowly with water. To address this, Dr Vogt and his team have found a chemical additive that greatly speeds up the reaction. They have also found a way to ensure that the reaction can be controlled to supply only as much hydrogen as is needed at any given moment.
8. Which of the following best explains “rugged” underlined in paragraph 1?
A. small B. breakable C. tough D. huge
9. What can we know about the invention according to paragraph 3?
A. Water and electricity are necessary in the process.
B. Several chemical reactions occur in the same tank.
C. The remaining waste needs removing with extra help.
D. Magnesium hydride reacts with water to produce hydrogen.
10. How is paragraph 4 mainly developed?
A. By quoting sayings. B. By drawing comparisons.
C. By providing examples. D. By explaining a theory.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. “Toothpaste” in Your Tank B. Hydrogen: Fuel of Fantasy
C. The Green Fuel of Tomorrow D. Paste That Powers the World

Ten-year-old Tom always felt lonely. His parents were always occupied with work. They left home early in the morning and came back late at night. Tom often ate dinner alone and went to bed without a goodnight kiss. For him, there were no family games, no city tours, no weekend outings.
One day, Tom's parents brought home a gift—a smart watch. "This watch has a special friend inside,” Mom said with a smile. "Her name is Ling. She can talk to you, answer your questions, and even tell you stories.” A wave of anticipation swept over Tom as he put on the watch and pressed the button. A gentle voice came out, "Hello, Tom! I'm Ling. Nice to meet you!” Tom's eyes lit up. He had never received such an interesting gift before.
From that day on, Ling became Tom's closest companion. Every morning, Ling would say, "Good morning, Tom! Have a great day at school!” Whenever Tom encountered difficulties with his homework, Ling would patiently provide thorough explanations. After Tom got into bed, Ling would tell his favorite tales about brave knights and magical lands. Sometimes, when Tom felt scared of the dark, Ling would sing softly to comfort him. To Tom, Ling was more than a voice; she was family.
His parents noticed Tom's change. "See? Our little boy seems much happier now,” Dad said one evening. Mom agreed, "The watch really helps,” relieved. They thought their son was no longer lonely. What they didn't know was that sometimes, after Ling had finished her stories, Tom would lie awake in the darkness, listening to the silence that filled the room. He loved Ling, but he couldn't help thinking: if only Mom and Dad were here.
One afternoon after school, Tom tripped and fell on the way home. The watch hit a rock with a loud crack. When Tom picked it up, the screen was dark. He pressed the button again and again, but nothing appeared. "Ling? Ling, are you there?” he called desperately. There was no reply.

C
Paste That Powers the World
【答案】8. C 9. D 10. B 11. A
根据第一段“Storing meaningful quantities of hydrogen gas requires compressing (压缩) it several hundred times. Turning it into a liquid state is another option, but one that requires cooling the stuff to −253℃. Either process requires rugged tanks. Over time, hydrogen gas can pass slowly into metals, weakening them and potentially causing damage. Tanks must be built from special materials designed to avoid this breakdown.(储存足量的氢气需要将其压缩数百倍。将其转化为液态是另一种选择,但需要将氢气冷却到零下253℃。这两种过程都需要rugged储罐。随着时间的推移,氢气会慢慢渗入金属,削弱金属并可能造成损坏。储罐必须由特殊材料制成,以避免这种损坏)”可知,由于氢气储存条件极端(高压或极低温),且氢气会削弱金属,因此储罐需要“坚固的、耐用的”,rugged意为“坚固的”,与tough意思最接近。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Its main component is magnesium hydride, a compound that when introduced to water, reacts with it to form hydrogen and magnesium hydroxide.(其主要成分是氢化镁,这种化合物与水接触时会反应生成氢气和氢氧化镁)”可知,氢化镁与水反应释放氢气。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Dr Vogt’s invention offers several advantages over batteries, petrol and more traditional ways of dealing with hydrogen. Moreover, the paste itself is harmless, and so are the reaction’s by-products.(沃格特博士的发明在储存氢气方面相较于电池、汽油以及传统方法具有多项优势。首先,它每升和每公斤的能量储存量都高于电池或汽油;其次,加注过程十分简便,只需将空的膏体容器替换为装满的容器,并补充储存在独立水箱中的水即可;第三,与电池不同,这种膏体即使长时间存放也不会逐渐损失储存的能量。此外,该膏体本身无害,其反应副产物也同样安全)”可知,第四段主要通过将“powerpaste”与电池、汽油和传统储氢方式进行比较来展开论述。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。根据全文内容,尤其是第二段“Researchers at the Fraunhofer Institute led by Marcus Vogt think that supplying hydrogen in paste form (糊状) offers a way around some of its limitations.(马库斯·沃格特领导的弗劳恩霍夫研究所的研究人员认为,以糊状形式供应氢气可以绕过其一些局限性)”以及第三段“Their invention, which they nickname “powerpaste”, looks like toothpaste.(他们的发明被昵称为“动力膏”,看起来像牙膏)”可知,本文主要介绍的是一种形似牙膏的氢能糊状储存技术,因此最佳标题是“你油箱里的‘牙膏’”。

【答案】范文
Digital Communication: A Bridge at Home?
Our class had a discussion about whether digital communication serves as a bridge between family members.
In my opinion, digital tools are a double-edged sword. On one hand, video calls help family members keep in touch when living apart. On the other hand, many families get trapped in their own screens even staying together, rarely talking face to face. Thus digital communication may become a barrier instead of a bridge.
I suggest setting screen-free time every day. Real eye contact and conversations carry more warmth. Digital tools should assist family bonds rather than replace them.

【答案】 Tom had no choice but to turn to his parents for help. Clutching the broken watch, he hurried home. Like usual, the house lay empty and quiet. But this time, the loneliness felt unbearable — not because Ling was gone, but because the people he truly needed were absent. He waited and waited. It was nearly midnight when his parents finally returned. They were alarmed to see Tom curling up on the sofa, face wet with tears. “What happened, Tom?” Mom rushed over. Wordlessly, he held out the broken watch. Dad soon fetched his toolbox trying to fix it, but in vain. Seeing this, Tom couldn’t contain himself any longer and burst into desperate sobs. Between gasps, he poured out his loneliness — the silent dinners, the empty house, the longing for someone to be there.
At that moment, both Mom and Dad saw clearly what they had missed. They realized that no watch, however smart, could ever take the place of their presence. Immediately, Mom wrapped her arms around Tom, apologizing, “I’m so sorry. We thought the watch was enough, but we were wrong.” Dad knelt beside them, his voice thick with guilt. “From now on, we’ll be home earlier. No more lonely dinners.” Together they drew up a family schedule — Tuesday night board games, Friday pizza-making, Sunday afternoons in the park. They promised to make it a weekly routine and wrote it on the family calendar in bright colors. That night, the family came to understand technology might offer comfort, but only love could fill the silence of an empty home.
