M: Well, those shows get high ratings. People love watching others perform or cook.
W: But shouldn’t TV offer more meaningful content, like shows that teach people new skills or tell interesting stories?
M: TV is mainly for relaxation, right? If you want to learn something, you can watch online courses or read books.
W: I don’t agree. TV could be both entertaining and educational — there’s no need to choose one.

18. What does the speaker want to raise awareness about?
A. Rising sea levels. B. Sculpture courses. C. Plastic pollution in oceans.
19. What did the speaker do in the “Ocean Treasures” project?
A. Painting sea animals on plastic bottles.
B. Selling reusable bags to protect marine life.
C. Collecting plastic waste to make sculptures.
20. What effect has the project brought?
A. Local shops no longer sell plastic bottles.
B. More people use reusable items at the beach.
C. Schools begin to teach ocean lessons.
C 19. C 20. B
W: Good morning, everyone. Today I want to share how I used art to raise awareness about plastic pollution in our oceans. Plastic waste is a big problem, but many people don’t realize how much it affects marine life. I live near a beach, and every time I go there, I see plastic bottles and bags everywhere. So I started an art project called “Ocean Treasures”. I collected plastic waste from the beach, cleaned it, and turned it into sculptures of sea animals — like turtles, dolphins, and fish. Each sculpture has a tag that says how long it takes for that type of plastic to break down. I displayed the sculptures on the beach and in local malls. The project has made a difference: more people are now bringing reusable bags to the beach, and local shops have started selling reusable water bottles. Some schools even asked me to teach students how to make their own plastic sculptures to spread the word.

Seven children line up, awaiting their turn on a slide. As each child rushes down, the ones behind laugh and cheer. Such a scene is rare in Lagos, one of Africa’s fastest-growing cities, with a population of about 17 million. But on the city’s outskirts, a garbage-site-turned-park is providing room for kids to play. The project is the brainchild of 17-year-old Amara Nwuneli, who wants to prove that even in Lagos’ most crowded corners, children can have fun.
For Amara, the path to building parks began when a terrible flood struck her hometown in 2020. Heavy rains swallowed entire neighborhoods, leaving thousands of families homeless. “People just said it was government failure or bad luck.” Amara recalls. But, later, she realized it was what was called Nigeria’s “climate apathy”: the tendency to view floods, heat waves, and droughts as isolated (孤立的) incidents rather than consequences of a warming planet.
“I wanted to change the mindset,” Amara says. “If people don’t feel connected to nature, they won’t fight to protect it. And I knew that had to start with creating spaces people could actually see and feel.”
It was no easy task. Amara first approached the Lagos State Government, which offered land but imposed (施加) restrictions that made long-term construction impossible. After months of dead ends, she shifted strategy and started looking for alternative spaces that were accessible to high-risk communities. Eventually, Amara secured a garbage site. She then mobilized a team of artists, volunteers, and small donors to clear the trash and rebuild the site with recycled materials. Three months later, the park opened.
Amara is now planning two more parks. She says communities from across the country have been reaching out to her team for advice on how to reclaim abandoned spaces for public use. “That creates a kind of cycle,” Amara reflects. “I take action, others notice, they want to take action, too. And together, it grows.”
24. What might be a problem Lagos is facing?
A. Insufficient public areas. B. Poor garbage management.
C. Limited recreational activities. D. Uncontrolled population growth.
25. What does the underlined word “apathy” in paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A. Disbelief. B. Indifference. C. Ignorance. D. Fear.
26. What quality does Amara demonstrate when completing the project?
A. Integrity. B. Optimism. C. Flexibility. D. Confidence.
27. What does Amara want to convey in the last paragraph?
A. Small steps make a big difference. B. Every cloud has a silver lining.
C. All roads lead to Rome. D. It is never too late to act.
A 25. B 26. C 27. A
根据第一段中的“Such scene is rare in Lagos, one of Africa’s fastest-growing cities, with a population of about 17 million. But on the city’s outskirts, a garbage-site-turned-park is providing room for kids to play.(在人口约1700万、非洲发展最快的城市之一拉各斯,这样的场景十分罕见。但在城市郊区,一座由垃圾场改造而成的公园为孩子们提供了玩耍的空间。)”可知,孩子们排队玩滑梯的日常场景在拉各斯十分少见,当地缺少可供孩子活动的公共空间,公共区域不足是拉各斯面临的问题。
【25题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段画线词“apathy”后面的“the tendency to view floods, heat waves, and droughts as isolated incidents rather than consequences of a warming planet(人们倾向于将洪水、热浪和干旱视为孤立事件,而非全球变暖带来的后果)”可知,民众对待气候相关灾害的态度是不以为意,不认为灾害与气候变化有关,对气候问题缺乏关注。
根据第四段中的“Amara first approached the Lagos State Government, which offered land but imposed restrictions that made long-term construction impossible. After months of dead ends, she shifted strategy and started looking for alternative spaces that were accessible to high-risk communities. Eventually, Amara secured a garbage site.(阿玛拉首先联系了拉各斯州政府,政府提供了土地,但施加的限制条件让长期建设无法实现。在数月碰壁之后,她转变策略,开始寻找高风险社区可以使用的替代场地。最终,阿玛拉选定了一处垃圾场。)”可知,阿玛拉在原定方案行不通时,及时调整思路、更换策略,最终完成了公园项目,体现出了灵活应变的品质。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中阿玛拉说的话“That creates a kind of cycle(那形成了一种循环)”以及“I take action, others notice, they want to take action, too. And together, it grows.(我付诸行动,其他人看到后,也想要行动起来。众人同心,影响力便不断壮大。)”可知,阿玛拉认为自己的一个行动会带动更多人参与进来,点滴行动汇聚起来就能产生越来越大的影响,传达了“小行动带来大改变”的道理。
C
So, you’ve finished that dull book. You sat through the movie you paid for, super bored. Stood in a long queue for that milk tea. Paid much for the luxury handbag — expensive nonsense. What do these have in common? They’re all examples of what economists call “sunk costs”: the price you’ve already paid — in time, money, effort, suffering, for an item or an experience — holds you to them. It’s a phenomenon we all recognize. It affects our behavior in ways that can be unreasonable. But we do it.
To avoid the situation, economists tell us to make decisions based mainly on future value, not past investment. If the ongoing cost outweighs the expected benefit, one should cut their losses and walk away. It hurts, yes, but this cold, clear logic protects us from going broke.
Yet, life is rarely so neatly calculated. This purely economic view raises difficult questions: Does the value of an experience lie only in its outcome, or also in the process? A joyful journey with an ordinary goal and a painful one aimed at a splendid achievement, which one is more worthwhile?
When it comes to education, the “sunk costs” theory doesn’t seem applicable. Parents and teachers pour immeasurable amount of investment — love, time, hope, money — into the growth of a child. Will the child turn out the way they expect? No guarantee. If we view this through a strict cost-benefit angle, much of education can be written off as a “sunk cost”. Education is obviously different from the commercial world. A child’s growth cannot be planned like a business strategy; it unfolds like a unique and unpredictable story. We can’t dream his dreams or live his life; we can purely build the stage, and light his path.
In education we have to hold onto this faith: everything we do for a child is worthwhile. Every act of love is like offering light and water to a seed; while we can’t see its roots grow underground, we know it. That child will blossom (开花) some day. Not all that has cost is sunk.
28. Which of the following best describes the examples in paragraph 1?
A. Boring but beneficial. B. Interesting but worthless.
C. Joyful and worthwhile. D. Senseless and regrettable.
29. What do economists advise us to do to avoid “sunk costs”?
A. Focus on the outcome. B. Ignore the future losses.
C. Calculate the past cost. D. Pursue the hidden gains.
30. What is the writer’s attitude towards the investment in education?
A. Approving. B. Balanced. C. Critical. D. Doubting.
31. Why does the author write the text?
A. To promote a principle. B. To correct a misbehavior.
C. To challenge a concept. D. To present a phenomenon.
D 29. A 30. A 31. C
根据第一段中的“So, you’ve finished that dull book. You sat through the movie you paid for, super bored. Stood in a long queue for that milk tea. Paid much for the luxury handbag — expensive nonsense.(所以,你读完了那本枯燥的书。你坐在那部花钱买票的电影前,超级无聊。排了长队买那杯奶茶。花大价钱买了那个奢侈手袋——昂贵的无用之物。)”可知,这些例子描述的都是无聊、无价值且令人后悔的行为。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“To avoid the situation, economists tell us to make decisions based mainly on future value, not past investment. If the ongoing cost outweighs the expected benefit, one should cut their losses and walk away.(为了避免这种情况,经济学家告诉我们做决策时要主要基于未来价值,而非过去的投资。如果持续成本超过预期收益,就应该止损并离开。)”可知,经济学家建议我们要聚焦未来的结果价值,及时止损。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“In education we have to hold onto this faith: everything we do for a child is worthwhile. Every act of love is like offering light and water to a seed; while we can’t see its roots grow underground, we know it. That child will blossom (开花) some day.(在教育中我们必须坚守这份信念:我们为孩子做的一切都是值得的。每一份爱意都像给种子提供光和水,虽然我们看不到它的根在地下生长,但我们知道,这个孩子总有一天会绽放。)” 可知,作者对教育领域的投入持完全认可的态度。
【31题详解】
推理判断题。根据倒数第二段中的“When it comes to education, the “sunk costs” theory doesn’t seem applicable.(当涉及到教育时,“沉没成本”理论似乎并不适用。)”以及最后一段中的“In education we have to hold onto this faith: everything we do for a child is worthwhile.(在教育中我们必须要坚守这个信念:我们为孩子所做的一切都是值得的。)”
D
Why does “bouba” sound round and “kiki” sound spiky (尖锐的)? This perception, known as “bouba-kiki” effect, is reliable all over the world, and for at least a century, scientists have considered it a clue to the origin of language, theorizing that maybe our ancestors built their first words upon these associations between sound and shape. But a new study published in Science adds an unexpected finding: baby chickens make these same pairings, suggesting that the link to human language may not be so unique.
The study was led by Maria Loconsole, a comparative psychologist at the University of Padua. She and her colleagues placed chicks in front of two panels: one featured a flowerlike shape with gently rounded curves; the other had a spiky shape like a cartoon explosion. They then played recordings of humans saying either “bouba” or “kiki” and observed the birds’ behavior. When the chicks heard “bouba,” 80 percent of them approached the round shape first and spent an average of more than three minutes exploring it compared with an average of just under one minute spent exploring the spiky shape. When the chicks heard “kiki,” the opposite occurred.
One long-standing theory that these associations are inspired by the shape your mouth makes when you say each word can now be ruled out, since the chicks showed the effect despite being unable to speak. Instead the “bouba-kiki” effect may originate from the physical properties of objects themselves. When round objects hit the ground or roll, they typically produce more continuous, low-frequency sounds than spiky ones. A built-in grasp of those dynamics, linking sight and sound, could help newborn animals quickly make sense of their environment, possibly to locate food or avoid predators
The “bouba-kiki” effect may have played a role in the emergence of language. But for chickens, this same tendency seems to serve a more evolutionary purpose. “Even if language is unique to humans,” Loconsole says, “that doesn’t mean that it comes from an ability that is unique to humans.”
32. What does the new study focus on?
A. The origin of human language. B. Sound-shape connections in chicks.
C. Animals’ recognition of shapes. D. Brain-behavior relationships of birds.
33. In what way do the chicks respond differently to the two sounds?
A. Sound localization. B. Reaction speed.
C. Exploration preference. D. Matching accuracy.
34. What is paragraph 3 mainly about concerning the effect?
A. Its historical context. B. Its potential application.
C. Its overlooked limitation. D. Its possible explanation.
35. What does Loconsole say about the effect?
A. It originated in birds. B. It shows evolutionary tendency.
C. It’s shared across species. D. It’s vital to language emergence.
B 33. C 34. D 35. C
根据第一段“But a new study published in Science adds an unexpected finding: baby chickens make these same pairings, suggesting that the link to human language may not be so unique.(但发表在《科学》杂志上的一项新研究有了意外发现:雏鸡也会做出同样的配对,这表明这种与人类语言的关联可能并非人类独有。)”
根据第二段“When the chicks heard ‘bouba,’ 80 percent of them approached the round shape first and spent an average of more than three minutes exploring it compared with an average of just under one minute spent exploring the spiky shape. When the chicks heard ‘kiki,’ the opposite occurred.(当雏鸡听到‘bouba’时,80%会先靠近圆润形状,平均花三分多钟探索它,而探索尖锐形状的时间平均不到一分钟。听到‘kiki’时则相反。)”可知,雏鸡对两种声音的不同反应体现在探索偏好上。故选C。
【34题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“One long-standing theory that these associations are inspired by the shape your mouth makes when you say each word can now be ruled out, since the chicks showed the effect despite being unable to speak. Instead the “bouba-kiki” effect may originate from the physical properties of objects themselves.(一种长期存在的理论认为,这些关联是由你说每个单词时嘴巴的形状引起的,现在可以排除这种说法,因为小鸡尽管不会说话,但还是表现出了这种效果。相反,“bouba-kiki”效应可能源于物体本身的物理特性。)”可知,本段主要是对该效应产生的原因给出可能的解释。故选D。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““Even if language is unique to humans,” Loconsole says, “that doesn’t mean that it comes from an ability that is unique to humans.”(洛康索莱说:“即使语言是人类独有的,这也并不意味着它源自一种人类独有的能力。”)”
For years, I kept a careful distance from the people around me. Living in a busy city apartment, I learned to move through shared spaces quietly. ____36____ It wasn’t that I disliked others; keeping to myself just seemed easier. Independence mattered to me, and needing no one felt like part of being a grown-up.
____37____ Without warning, the power went out. The building fell into complete darkness. I sat alone in my apartment, the cold air pressing in as my phone went dead. The silence was familiar. Yet this time, it seemed different. Less comforting. More exposed.
A soft knock broke the stillness. It was my neighbour from 3B, someone I recognised but hardly knew. She held a candle and mentioned that a few residents were gathering in the hallway and invited me to join them. I hesitated. Staying alone felt safe, but something felt unsettled. ____38____
People sat on the floor, sharing blankets, tea, and quiet conversation. I listened more than I spoke. The man I had once assumed was unfriendly turned out to be a retired doctor with a dry sense of humour. ____39____ I realized how easily distance can turn into detachment (疏离).
When the lights finally returned, the hallway looked the same, but it felt different. I didn’t suddenly become outgoing, nor did I abandon my need for space. ____40____ It’s about knowing when to let them in. Now, when I step into the elevator, I don’t automatically lower my eyes. Sometimes, I look up.
A. After a moment, I stepped outside.
B. I avoided eye contact and unnecessary conversation.
C. I began to question my decision to join the conversation.
D. Most neighbours in the building kept to themselves as well.
E. As the night progressed, my long-held belief began to loosen.

Dear Jenny,
Knowing that our school English Festival will hold an English short video competition, I’m writing to share my choice and reasons.
I’d choose “The joy of travelling”. Travel turns ordinary days into stories: a sunrise over mountains, a warm smile from a stranger, or a bite of local food can all speak louder than words. For a short video, these vivid moments are easy to capture and fun to share. More importantly, while showing beautiful scenery, we can also present friendly Chinese people and rich culture, helping classmates see the world and themselves more clearly. Besides, it is easy for everyone to join in with a phone and a curious heart.
Yours,
Li Hua

I’d always been told to take care of my older brother, Brian, who was born weak and small. I’d often tie his shoes or prepare another glass of water for him. My mom saw my larger size and strong body as a sign that I was to be a kind of guardian angel (守护天使) for Brian. However, that was not the case.
One day our school sponsored a pumpkin-carving contest. First prize was $100, and I knew just how I would spend it. There was a brand-new game I was dying to own. So I decided the first place bonus definitely had to land in my pocket.
When I had to carve the perfect pumpkin I’d picked out, it dawned on me that with my big clumsy fingers I’d surely screw it up (搞砸). I thought of Brian’s smaller, delicate hands and knew he was the man for the job. I immediately begged Brian. Unexpectedly, he asked for a cut. That was fifty-fifty. Quickly doing the math in my head, I figured out even if I split (分摊) the first prize, I’d still have enough cash for the game. So I gave in to Brian’s demands. With skillful hands Brian carved the perfect face, and now we had the best pumpkin ever.
Then the unexpected happened: We came in second. Unfortunately, second prize was only $50, and I needed every penny of that to buy the game. The day of the awards ceremony, the principal handed over the money to me because Brian was home, sick with cold.
If he really wanted to win, he would have been here today, I thought to myself, justifying stealing the cash from under poor Brian’s runny nose. With hardly a thought, I ran to the store and bought my dream game. That night when Brian asked if we had won, I denied, afraid to look into his eyes.
The whole thing was never mentioned again until the day when Brian was packing for college. I played my usual role in helping him pack when I came across an old album filled with photos he had taken as the school photographer.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150左右;

Paragraph 2:
“You actually knew and didn’t say anything?“ I was shocked.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
I was enjoying the photos when one caught my eye. It was a picture of the pumpkin we had carved together. Underneath, Brian had written, “My first real win with my brother. Even if we didn’t get first, it was a victory because we worked as a team.” Seeing those words, a wave of guilt washed over me. I remembered how I had selfishly taken all the money and lied to him. I realized how much I had let him down. I turned to Brian, ready to confess everything.
Paragraph 2:
“You actually knew and didn’t say anything?” I was shocked. Brian just smiled gently and said, “I always knew. But I also knew that you needed that game more than the money at that time. And I was proud of our teamwork, not the prize. I hoped one day you’d understand the real meaning of winning together.” His words made me feel even more ashamed. I apologized sincerely, vowing to make it up to him. From then on, I truly understood my role as his guardian angel and the importance of true brotherhood.

TV is mainly for relaxation, right? If you want to learn something, you can watch online courses . or read books. I don't agree. TV could be both entertaining and educational.
