Seven children line up, awaiting their turn on a slide. As each child rushes down, the ones behind laugh and cheer. Such scene is rare in Lagos, one of Africa's fastest-growing cities, with a population of about 17 million. But on the city's outskirts, a garbage-site-turned-park is providing room for kids to play. The project is the brainchild of 17-year-old Amara Nwuneli, who wants to prove that even in Lagos' most crowded corners, children can have fun.
For Amara, the path to building parks began when a terrible flood struck her hometown in 2020. Heavy rains swallowed entire neighborhoods, leaving thousands of families homeless. “People just said it was government failure or bad luck.” Amara recalls. But, later, she realized it was what was called Nigeria's “climate apathy”: the tendency to view floods, heat waves, and droughts as isolated (孤立的) incidents rather than consequences of a warming planet.
“I wanted to change the mindset,” Amara says. “If people don't feel connected to nature, they won't fight to protect it. And I knew that had to start with creating spaces people could actually see and feel.”
It was no easy task. Amara first approached the Lagos State Government, which offered land but imposed (施加) restrictions that made long-term construction impossible. After months of dead ends, she shifted strategy and started looking for alternative spaces that were accessible to high-risk communities. Eventually, Amara secured a garbage site. She then mobilized a team of artists, volunteers, and small donors to clear the trash and rebuild the site with recycled materials. Three months later, the park opened.
Amara is now planning two more parks. She says communities from across the country have been reaching out to her team for advice on how to reclaim abandoned spaces for public use. “That creates a kind of cycle,” Amara reflects. “I take action, others notice, they want to take action, too. And together, it grows.”
24. What might be a problem Lagos is facing?
A. Insufficient public areas. B. Poor garbage management.
C. Limited recreational activities. D. Uncontrolled population growth.
25. What does the underlined word “apathy” in paragraph 2 most probably mean?
A. Disbelief. B. Indifference. C. Ignorance. D. Fear.
26. What quality does Amara demonstrate when completing the project?
A. Integrity. B. Optimism. C. Flexibility. D. Confidence.
27. What does Amara want to convey in the last paragraph?
A. Small steps make a big difference. B. Every cloud has a silver lining.
C. All roads lead to Rome. D. It is never too late to act.

So, you've finished that dull book. You sat through the movie you paid for, super bored. Stood in a long queue for that milk tea. Paid much for the luxury handbag — expensive nonsense. What do these have in common? They're all examples of what economists call “sunk costs”: the price you've already paid — in time, money, effort, suffering, for an item or an experience — holds you to them. It's a phenomenon we all recognize. It affects our behavior in ways that can be unreasonable. But we do it.
To avoid the situation, economists tell us to make decisions based mainly on future value, not past investment. If the ongoing cost outweighs the expected benefit, one should cut their losses and walk away. It hurts, yes, but this cold, clear logic protects us from going broke.
Yet, life is rarely so neatly calculated. This purely economic view raises difficult questions: Does the value of an experience lie only in its outcome, or also in the process? A joyful journey with an ordinary goal and a painful one aimed at a splendid achievement, which one is more worthwhile?
When it comes to education, the “sunk costs” theory doesn't seem applicable. Parents and teachers pour immeasurable amount of investment — love, time, hope, money — into the growth of a child. Will the child turn out the way they expect? No guarantee. If we view this through a strict cost-benefit angle, much of education can be written off as a “sunk cost”. Education is obviously different from the commercial world. A child's growth cannot be planned like a business strategy; it unfolds like a unique and unpredictable story. We can't dream his dreams or live his life; we can purely build the stage, and light his path.
In education we have to hold onto this faith: everything we do for a child is worthwhile. Every act of love is like offering light and water to a seed; while we can't see its roots grow underground, we know it. That child will blossom (开花) some day. Not all that has cost is sunk.
28. Which of the following best describes the examples in paragraph 1?
A. Boring but beneficial. B. Interesting but worthless.
C. Joyful and worthwhile. D. Senseless and regrettable.
29. What do economists advise us to do to avoid “sunk costs”?
A. Focus on the outcome. B. Ignore the future losses.
C. Calculate the past cost. D. Pursue the hidden gains.
30. What is the writer's attitude towards the investment in education?
A. Approving. B. Balanced. C. Critical. D. Doubting.
31. Why does the author write the text?
A. To promote a principle. B. To correct a misbehavior.
C. To challenge a concept. D. To present a phenomenon.
D
Why does “bouba” sound round and “kiki” sound spiky (尖锐的)? This perception, known as “bouba-kiki” effect, is reliable all over the world, and for at least a century, scientists have considered it a clue to the origin of language, theorizing that maybe our ancestors built their first words upon these associations between sound and shape. But a new study published in Science adds an unexpected finding: baby chickens make these same pairings, suggesting that the link to human language may not be so unique.
The study was led by Maria Loconsole, a comparative psychologist at the University of Padua. She and her colleagues placed chicks in front of two panels: one featured a flowerlike shape with gently rounded curves; the other had a spiky shape like a cartoon explosion. They then played recordings of humans saying either “bouba” or “kiki” and observed the birds' behavior. When the chicks heard “bouba,” 80 percent of them approached the round shape first and spent an average of more than three minutes exploring it compared with an average of just under one minute spent exploring the spiky shape. When the chicks heard “kiki,” the opposite occurred.
One long-standing theory that these associations are inspired by the shape your mouth makes when you say each word can now be ruled out, since the chicks showed the effect despite being unable to speak. Instead the “bouba-kiki” effect may originate from the physical properties of objects themselves. When round objects hit the ground or roll, they typically produce more continuous, low-frequency sounds than spiky ones. A built-in grasp of those dynamics, linking sight and sound, could help newborn animals quickly make sense of their environment, possibly to locate food or avoid predators (食肉动物).
The “bouba-kiki” effect may have played a role in the emergence of language. But for chickens, this same tendency seems to serve a more evolutionary purpose. “Even if language is unique to humans,” Loconsole says, “that doesn't mean that it comes from an ability that is unique to humans.”
32. What does the new study focus on?
A. The origin of human language. B. Sound-shape connections in chicks.
C. Animals' recognition of shapes. D. Brain-behavior relationships of birds.
33. In what way do the chicks respond differently to the two sounds?
A. Sound localization. B. Reaction speed.
C. Exploration preference. D. Matching accuracy.
34. What is paragraph 3 mainly about concerning the effect?
A. Its historical context. B. Its potential application.
C. Its overlooked limitation. D. Its possible explanation.
35. What does Loconsole say about the effect?
A. It originated in birds. B. It shows evolutionary tendency.
C. It's shared across species. D. It's vital to language emergence.

For years, I kept a careful distance from the people around me. Living in a busy city apartment, I learned to move through shared spaces quietly. 36 It wasn't that I disliked others; keeping to myself just seemed easier. Independence mattered to me, and needing no one felt like part of being a grown-up.
37 Without warning, the power went out. The building fell into complete darkness. I sat alone in my apartment, the cold air pressing in as my phone went dead. The silence was familiar. Yet this time, it seemed different. Less comforting. More exposed.
A soft knock broke the stillness. It was my neighbour from 3B, someone I recognised but hardly knew. She held a candle and mentioned that a few residents were gathering in the hallway and invited me to join them. I hesitated. Staying alone felt safe, but something felt unsettled. 38
People sat on the floor, sharing blankets, tea, and quiet conversation. I listened more than I spoke. The man I had once assumed was unfriendly turned out to be a retired doctor with a dry sense of humour. 39 I realized how easily distance can turn into detachment (疏离).
When the lights finally returned, the hallway looked the same, but it felt different. I didn't suddenly become outgoing, nor did I abandon my need for space. 40 It's about knowing when to let them in. Now, when I step into the elevator, I don't automatically lower my eyes. Sometimes, I look up.
A. After a moment, I stepped outside.
B. I avoided eye contact and unnecessary conversation.
C. I began to question my decision to join the conversation.
D. Most neighbours in the building kept to themselves as well.
E. As the night progressed, my long-held belief began to loosen.
F. But I understood something new: maturity isn't about shutting others out.
G. That belief was challenged one night when a violent storm swept through the city.

Each clay figurine acts as a cultural bridge, helping strengthen cross-cultural ties.

I'd always been told to take care of my older brother, Brian, who was born weak and small. I'd often tie his shoes or prepare another glass of water for him. My mom saw my larger size and strong body as a sign that I was to be a kind of guardian angel (守护天使) for Brian. However, that was not the case.
One day our school sponsored a pumpkin-carving contest. First prize was $100, and I knew just how I would spend it. There was a brand-new game I was dying to own. So I decided the first place bonus definitely had to land in my pocket.
When I had to carve the perfect pumpkin I'd picked out, it dawned on me that with my big clumsy fingers I'd surely screw it up (搞砸). I thought of Brian's smaller, delicate hands and knew he was the man for the job. I immediately begged Brian. Unexpectedly, he asked for a cut. That was fifty-fifty. Quickly doing the math in my head, I figured out even if I split (分摊) the first prize, I'd still have enough cash for the game. So I gave in to Brian's demands. With skillful hands Brian carved the perfect face, and now we had the best pumpkin ever.
Then the unexpected happened: We came in second. Unfortunately, second prize was only $50, and I needed every penny of that to buy the game. The day of the awards ceremony, the principal handed over the money to me because Brian was home, sick with cold. If he really wanted to win, he would have been here today, I thought to myself, justifying stealing the cash from under poor Brian's runny nose. With hardly a thought, I ran to the store and bought my dream game. That night when Brian asked if we had won, I denied, afraid to look into his eyes.
The whole thing was never mentioned again until the day when Brian was packing for college. I played my usual role in helping him pack when I came across an old album filled with photos he had taken as the school photographer.

Dear Jenny,
Knowing that our school English Festival will hold an English short video competition, I'm writing to share my choice and reasons.
I'd choose “The joy of travelling”. Travel turns ordinary days into stories: a sunrise over mountains, a warm smile from a stranger, or a bite of local food can all speak louder than words. For a short video, these vivid moments are easy to capture and fun to share. More importantly, while showing beautiful scenery, we can also present friendly Chinese people and rich culture, helping classmates see the world and themselves more clearly. Besides, it is easy for everyone to join in with a phone and a curious heart.
Yours,
Li Hua

I was enjoying the photos when one caught my eye. It showed Brian standing beside our pumpkin, a camera hanging from his neck and a soft smile on his pale face. At the bottom of the photo were the words, “My brother wanted that game badly, but I'm still glad we did this together.” My throat tightened. It dawned on me that Brian had known the truth all along—not only that I had taken the money, but that I had lied that night. Clutching the photo, I went downstairs to find him.
“You actually knew and didn't say anything?” I was shocked. Brian nodded quietly. “I guessed it,” he said, “but I knew you'd tell me when you were ready.” His calmness hurt more than anger would have. Tears stinging my eyes, I apologized and promised to pay him back. He smiled and pulled me into a hug, saying what mattered was that I had finally chosen honesty. At that moment, I understood true strength was not size but the generosity to forgive and the courage to admit one's fault.
