Reporters love writing about 1 : wake at four, run ten kilometres, read before breakfast. I spoke with thirty Shanghai scientists, athletes, artists and business owners and their answers were 2 : every big journey began with one short word — “Yes.”
Dr. Wu, later winner of the International Physics Olympiad, almost skipped a dull middle-school debate, but he 3 , spoke for two minutes, and discovered he could turn messy thoughts into clear words. That tiny courage led him to ask professors for lab time and, finally, to lead his own laser project.
Chen Ailin, now a chief engineer at COMAC, first got curious at sixteen when a delayed flight to Guangzhou left passengers complaining; 4 explained how headwinds burn extra fuel. Chen changed her major from accounting to aerospace, and today her new wing shape saves airlines millions of litres each year.

If you close your eyes and think of Zootopia, what do you see first? Maybe Judy’s quick movement through the streets, or Nick’s toothy smile? For many Disney fans, this ____21____ is of a film they watched “not long ago.” No wonder quite a few experience a mild shock when they realize that the first Zootopia came out in 2016. So why is it that the city still feels ____22____ after the whole nine years?
One reason is that the world of Zootopia has never really stopped growing. On screen, the story keeps expanding. The short series Zootopia+ returns to side characters and gives them their own small adventures. The sequel, Zootopia 2, goes even further. According to the filmmakers, the new film includes 178 characters ___23___ 67 species. There is a snake called Gary De’ Snake and a new area named Marsh Market, which is ____24____ to many semi-aquatic creatures. The map of the city is larger and more complex, but the main theme remains the same: very different animals trying to share one ____25____.
At the same time, the city has quietly stepped off the screen. In 2023, Shanghai Disney Resort opened the first Zootopia-themed land in the world. Visitors can walk past colorful shops, read funny posters on the walls, and hear music that makes them feel as if they have entered the film. Designers did not simply copy every scene; they also created new corners of the city. Later, some of these ideas moved back into Zootopia 2, so the direction of influence became two-way: the film ____26____ the park, and the park helped shape the film.
Beyond the cinema and the theme park, Zootopia keeps appearing in other forms. On a Disney cruise ship, guests can visit a sweets shop based on the movie. At Disney’s Animal Kingdom, a live show lets visitors meet the characters face to face. A steady range of toys, clothes and notebooks ____27____ images from the film into bedrooms, classrooms and daily routines. For fans, these objects are more than products. They are small ____28____ that the city still exists somewhere in their lives.
This helps explain a common ____29____ to the sequel. When people hear that the first film is already nine years old, they are genuinely surprised. Their memory does not ____30____ the calendar. From their point of view, Zootopia has been here all along, changing shape and location but never truly disappearing. The city has stayed with them, and so time itself feels shorter than it really is.

Larry was on another underwater expedition (探险) and he was very famous for it. But this time it was very different. He decided to bring his ten-year-old daughter with him. It was her first time to join her father in the underwater trip.
Larry first started diving when he was as old as his daughter. Back then, his own father took him on a trip too. From then on, Larry was crazy about diving. At first, he rented diving suits from a small shop by the sea. He didn’t like them because they never fit well — they were either too big or too small. Also, the instructor only gave him a short lesson before letting him dive into the water with his father. This was quite unusual for him. A kid of his age wasn’t able to dive at all. They had to study for five hours and practice for another five hours with a teacher first.
After that first trip, Larry’s diving adventures kept getting better and more exciting. There was never a dull moment. In his blue and black suit and with an oxygen tank (氧气罐) on his back, he dived from boats into the deep ocean. Dangerous places didn’t stop him from continuing his adventures. Sometimes he had to stay in a cage underwater, but it didn’t matter. He could still take pictures of the fish and other sea animals.
Larry’s first expedition without his father was to the Cayman Islands. There were a number of diving spots in that area and Larry was determined to visit them all. Luckily, a kind man offered to take him around the different spots for free. Larry didn’t even know what the time was, how many spots he dived into or how many photographs he took. He saw more than thirty kinds of fish and sea animals there.
Larry looked at his daughter. She looked just as excited as he was at her age. He hoped she loved diving as much as he did and could continue the family tradition. She already seemed braver than he was back then. And that, he thought, was the most important thing for a successful underwater adventure.
31. In what way was this expedition different for Larry?

32. Why did Larry have to stay in a cage underwater sometimes?

C. To admire the underwater view. D. To take photos more conveniently.
33. What can be learned from the underlined sentence?
A. Larry didn’t wear a watch. B. Larry was not good at maths.
C. Larry had a poor memory. D. Larry enjoyed the adventure.
34. What did Larry expect his daughter to do?
A. To become a successful diver. B. To make a good diving guide.
C. To take a lot of photos underwater. D. To have longer hours of training.
35. Which of the following about Larry’s daughter is NOT true?
A. She was only ten years old when she made her first underwater expedition.
B. She was very excited about her first underwater expedition.
C. She was much braver than he had been.
D. She didn’t like diving because she was not experienced enough.

People often think their chances of winning the lottery (彩票) are higher than they actually are. In America, the lottery uses the phrase, “It could be you.” While that might be true in theory (理论上), to be completely honest it should really say: “It could be you, but it probably won’t be.”
Not long ago, thousands of people from other states rushed into Pennsylvania. They wanted to buy lottery tickets. Each ticket cost only 90 cents, but that small amount offered the possibility of winning $90 million. It was the second largest lottery prize in history ever.
For that huge lottery prize, people bought more than 87 million tickets. They had to choose seven numbers from 1 to 80. The chance of winning was just 1 in 9.6 million, but that little chance still didn’t stop people from buying tickets. In the last few days before the lottery draw (抽奖), people were buying tickets at an amazing speed of 500 per second.
Experts say many people see lotteries as a form of legal gambling (赌博). Some critics point out that most players are poor and may struggle to afford tickets. There are also serious addicts (成瘾者) who focus too much on the game. They may spend all their savings on lottery tickets. A few clubs have even started to help these people get rid of the habit.
Politicians support lotteries because they provide money for government departments. The profits from lotteries usually go toward education or programs for the old. But critics argue that this is just a way for states to make gambling acceptable by calling it “social progress.” Whether you think lotteries are right or wrong, you cannot refuse to accept their popularity with many Americans.
36. There is ________ chance to win the lottery for most of the people.
A. often a B. little C. a big D. a good
37. In just one hour in the last few days, the Pennsylvania lottery sold tickets totaling ________.
A. $1.62 million B. $1.82 million C. $9.6million D. $87 million

A. join a support group B. get rid of the habit
C. win the lottery D. save every cent
39. The main idea of the passage is that ________.
A. lotteries are of great benefit to everyone who buys them
B. playing a lottery is just like investing in the stock market
C. many people buy lottery tickets, but lotteries cause disagreement
D. lotteries are nothing but legalized evils
40. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. Politicians don’t like lotteries because they like to pay extra taxes.
B. The popularity of lotteries in America actually is social progress.
C. Some critics don’t like lotteries because many poor people waste money on them.
D. People love the lottery because it is a stock market.

Stephen Hawking was born in Oxford, England on 8th January, 1942. He went to school in St Albans-a small city near London. Although he did well, he was never top of his class.
After leaving school, Hawking went first to Oxford University where he studied physics, then he went to Cambridge University where he studied cosmology (宇宙学). As he himself admitted, he didn’t work hard. He was a very lazy student, and did very little work. However, he still got good marks.
It was at the age of 20 that Hawking first noticed something was wrong with him. He started to bump into things. When he visited his family at Christmas time, his mother was so worried that she made him see a doctor. Hawking was sent to hospital for tests. Finally, the result came back. Hawking had motor neuron disease, an incurable (不可治愈的) illness which would make him unable to speak, breathe or move without the help of a machine. Doctors said they had no way to help him. He would die before he was 23.
At first, Hawking became very depressed. After a while, though, he began to see his life in a different way. As he later wrote, “Before my illness was diagnosed, I had been very bored with life. There had not seemed to be anything worth doing. But shortly after I came out of hospital, I suddenly realized that there were a lot of worthwhile things I could do.” Hawking married, found a job at Cambridge University, and had three children. He also went on to do some of the most important scientific research and worked at Cambridge University as a professor. He strongly believed that his story showed that nobody, however bad their situation is, should lose hope. “Life is not fair,” he once said. “You just have to do the best you can in your own situation.”
