Basic Information

Today, we’re going to focus on one that changed how the world communicates forever: the radio.
Read the conversation. What does Peter think is the most useful invention of all time?
Fu Xing: What do you think is the most useful invention of all time, Peter?
Peter: It has to be the radio.
Fu Xing: The radio? Why?
Peter: Before the radio was invented, information travelled very slowly. The world was made much
smaller by the radio. Suddenly, news could be spread around the world in seconds.
Fu Xing: Right. Who was the inventor?
Peter: An Italian inventor called Guglielmo Marconi. He developed the idea in the 1890s. In 1901, a
radio message was sent across the Atlantic Ocean for the first time.
Fu Xing: Wow! That was quite a distance at that time.
Peter: Yeah. And because of the radio, some other important inventions were developed as well.
Fu Xing: Like the television?
Peter: That’s right. It also had a big effect on music. The radio made it much easier for people to
enjoy music from artists around the world.

Think and share.
1. Many new inventions like smartphones appear nowadays. Do you agree that
the radio is still a great invention? Please give your reasons.
Yes, I agree. Although smartphones are popular now, the radio is still helpful.
It brings us news and music. Besides, it works well without the Internet, so
people can get information in some special situations.
I partly agree. The radio was great in the past. But today smartphones can
offer more kinds of news and music. So it is less important for most young
people.
I don’t agree. Smartphones can do almost all the work that the radio used to do.
So the radio is not so necessary for us any more.
Think and share.
2. Many inventions make our life easier, but some also bring troubles. Can you
name one invention that has both good and bad influences on humans?
The smartphone is such an invention. It was invented to connect people easily.
On one hand, we can chat, study and shop online. On the other hand, many
students spend too much time on it, and their eyesight and study are badly
influenced.
Choose another invention that you think is the most important and make a
mind map about it. Then describe it to a partner.
