Rudolph plays football for Florida State University. When he was visiting a middle school in Florida one Tuesday, he noticed sixth-grader Leo eating his lunch alone. Rudolph took a couple of pieces of pizza and joined Leo at his table.
Leo has autism (孤独症) , a condition that can make it hard to make friends and communicate with other people. His mother always worries about him. Two days later, she saw a picture of Rudolph and Leo eating together and it made her so happy that she cried. Then, she shared the picture on the internet, along with a message about how thankful she was. The story became popular very quickly.
“We just had a great conversation. He started telling me his name is Leo, telling me how much he loves Florida State.” said Rudolph. “He had a nice smile on his face.”
Leo’s mother said that middle school can be hard, and she worries about how other kids will treat her son. “Sometimes I’m thankful for his autism. That may sound like a terrible thing to say, but in some ways, it protects him,” she said.
“He doesn’t seem to notice that people look at him when he flaps his hands,” she said. “He doesn’t seem to notice that he doesn’t get invited to birthday parties. And he doesn’t seem to mind if he eats lunch alone.”
The mother said the photo of Rudolph and Leo’s lunch date helped teach people about autism. “The picture speaks more than a thousand words,” she added.
“I just wanted to go to say hi to the kid because I saw him eating alone. I didn’t even know anybody took a photo of it, ” Rudolph said and he was glad that the story was helping others.
Leo is excited that Rudolph signed his lunch box, and is enjoying all of the attention. “It’s been great. Everyone is so proud of me,” Leo said.

One day, while I was walking along a beach, I saw the footprints of a man in the sand! Was there another person on my island? Was it a cannibal (食人者)? I looked around and listened carefully, but I couldn’t see or hear anyone. I hurried back to my castle and pulled the ladder up behind me so that the cannibal wouldn’t go near me. I was very worried and I didn’t go out for three days. I couldn’t forget the footprints.
“Perhaps someone from the mainland came in a boat and then left again,” I thought. “Perhaps people often come from mainlands. But if that’s true, why do they come? What do they want? Are they looking for me? Do they want to kill me?” I didn’t feel safe anymore.
On the third day I had to go out to get some food and milk the goats. I didn’t see anyone and I began to feel less frightened. But I still decided to build another stronger fence around my castle. I was also worried about my goats. “I don’t want the cannibals to find them,” I thought. “I must find a safer place for them.”
During the following weeks, I walked all over the island. One day when I was exploring the west part, I had a very unpleasant experience. From the top of a hill, I saw a boat on the sea. It was going towards the land in the distance. When I walked down the hill to the beach, I saw something that made me feel ill. The sand was covered in bones and pieces of men’s bodies! There was also a small fire.
“How can those savages (野蛮人) do this to each other?” I asked myself, and I thanked God that I was not like them.
I felt very angry and I decided to kill them.
I went back to the hill every day with my gun and waited for them to come. I did this for three months, but I saw nobody.
“It’s better to hide,” I thought. “They mustn’t know that I’m here.” I tried not to make any noise and I didn’t use my gun to catch animals. I found a good place to hide in the middle of the woods. It was a small cave in a rock. The entrance to it was covered in branches, so it was very difficult to see. The next day I took some gunpowder and guns there, waiting for them to come.

You’ve probably seen posts about the “dopamine detox” (多巴胺断舍离) trend all over social media. Online supporters advise people to cut out all fun daily activities: no social media, no sweet snacks, no video games, and even no relaxing hanging out with friends. They believe this strict self-control can help people reset their brains, break bad daily habits, and make them study and work. However, scientific research shows this popular idea is not only incorrect but also harmful to people’s mental health in some ways.
First, let’s clear up a widespread misunderstanding about dopamine. It is not simply the so-called “happy chemical” as most people think. Instead, it acts as a key motivation (动机) signal in the human brain. Whenever you take part in enjoyable activities, your brain will produce dopamine naturally. It helps humans tell pleasant experiences apart from bad ones and drives us to move forward to achieve personal goals. In fact, it is totally unrealistic to stop dopamine production on purpose. Without proper dopamine, people will gradually lose willingness to do basic things, including eating, working and keeping in touch with others.
The bigger problem with this rising trend is that it considers normal daily joy as a hidden danger. It blames common relaxing behaviors for overexciting the brain, ignoring the natural fact that human brains are born to look for new things and keep social connections. What’s worse, it makes ordinary people feel ashamed of enjoying small pleasures in life, forming a bad emotional cycle that stops them from developing long-term healthy habits.
Experts suggest that balance matters more than extreme refusal (拒绝). Limiting meaningless phone time allows us to fall in love with meaningful hobbies like reading and drawing. We should know how to work with dopamine wisely. The real goal is never to stay away from joy, but to guide it to valuable and meaningful things in life.
37. How does the writer start Paragraph 1?
A. By raising a question to lead into the topic.
B. By listing serious results caused by bad habits.
C. By explaining a scientific word in quite simple words.
D. By presenting a popular opinion and then objecting (反对) to it.
38. What can we infer (推断) from the passage?
A. Strict self-control can completely stop dopamine production.
B. Following dopamine detox blindly may bring mental problem.
C. Too much dopamine makes people feel ashamed of small pleasures.
D. Scientists advise teenagers to avoid meaningless phone time to stay focused.
39. What’s the writer’s attitude (态度) to the dopamine detox trend?
A. He strongly doubts its value (价值). B. He shows little care about it.
C. He thinks it is worth wide praise. D. He fully supports its practical use.
40. Which can be a suitable title for the passage?
A. Dopamine: The Secret to Lasting Happiness
B. Daily Pleasures: Hidden Risks for Mental Health
C. Balance: A Wise way to deal with Joy and Dopamine
D. Dopamine Detox: A Popular Way to Form Good Habits

Not all teenage problems come from study or family. Some come from peer relationships at school. Some teenagers have difficulty getting along with classmates. They fear being left out by group members. Some dare not express their true ideas just in order to fit in. This makes them feel lonely and stressed.
Psychologists give teenagers some advice. First, accept that you don’t need to please everyone. It is OK to have different opinions from your classmates. Second, find true friends who respect your thoughts. Real friendship never asks you to change yourself totally. Third, if you have trouble in getting on with others, turn to your teachers for advice. What’s more, learn to be a good listener. It helps you build better relationships with your schoolmates.

Dear Mr Zhang,
I’m writing to recommend May as the “Star of Role Model”. She has many strong qualities.
First, she is confident enough to express her opinions. Second, she is creative. She often comes up with new ideas to improve students’ life. Moreover, she is helpful. She teaches us how to solve teen problems, like being bullied.
Besides, she loves reading. Her favorite book is The Little Prince. It helps her understand the world better.
In my opinion, she is not only kind but also excellent. She sets a good example for everyone. I hope you can consider my recommendation.
Yours,
Li Hua
