三、阅读理解(共11小题,每小题2分,满分22分)
A
Dear Pat,
A friend gave me a T-shirt for my birthday, but I don’t like it. However, she sometimes asks if I like it and why I never wear it. Should I lie or wear it to make her happy? What should I do if I don’t like a gift from someone?
Frank
Hi Frank,
It can feel uncomfortable when you don’t like a gift, especially if your friend asks about it. You don’t want to hurt her feelings, but you also don’t want to lie.
One way to deal with this is to consider the kind thought behind the gift. Your friend gave it to you because she cares about you. When she asks, you can say, “Thanks again for the gift! It was so kind of you to think of me.” This way, you express your thanks without lying.
If she asks why you don’t wear it, you can give a polite reason. For example, “I don’t wear T-shirts that often” or “I’m saving it for a special occasion (场合)”. This won’t hurt her feelings. In the future, you can give hints (暗示) about the things you like before your birthday. This way, friends can pick something that suits you better. Remember, gifts are about kindness, not just the item (物品) itself.
Pat
26. Why did Frank’s friend give him a T-shirt?
A. Because it was a birthday gift.
B. Because she wanted to thank Frank.
C. Because Frank had hinted that he liked it.

27. What is Frank doing in the letter?
A. He is giving suggestions.
B. He is asking for advice.
C. He is sharing the latest life.
D. He is giving an invitation.
28. If Frank is asked why he doesn’t wear the T-shirt, what is the best way to reply?
A. The T-shirt is out of date.
B. Thank you again for the gift.
C. I don’t wear T-shirts that often.
D. Dark colors are not my cup of tea.

Once a single advertisement is stuck on a clean door, people will keep sticking more until the whole door is ruined, while a door without any advertisements usually stays clean for a long time. This interesting but worrying phenomenon (现象) in our daily life is a perfect example of what we call the “Broken Window Theory”.
The theory comes from an experiment done by a famous American psychologist named Philip Zimbardo in 1969. He left two identical cars in different neighborhoods, one of them with a broken window. To his surprise, the car with the broken window was quickly destroyed and stolen by people passing by, while the other car remained untouched for over a week. This shows that signs of disorder or neglect (忽视) can easily encourage further bad behavior.
This theory explains many problems. For instance, if a piece of litter is left on the sidewalk and nobody cleans it up, passers-by will soon think it is acceptable to throw more rubbish. Similarly, if a student begins to call someone names or use smartphones during class without being stopped, others will follow, which eventually destroys the learning environment. Another example is bullying; if mockery (嘲弄) is not corrected immediately early on, it may grow into serious school bullying.
Thomas Lickona, a famous American education expert, once noted that schools which fail to fix early bad behaviors are actually opening the door to bigger problems. Therefore, teachers must set clear rules from the very beginning and stop any small misbehavior before it turns into a bigger trouble. Meanwhile, students should develop self-discipline and have the courage to say “no” to bad habits, making sure they do not become the person who breaks the first window.
29. Why is the phenomenon described in paragraph 1?
A. To show the effect of the “Broken Window Theory” on readers.
B. To show the importance of learning about the “Broken Window Theory”.
C. To help readers better understand the “Broken Window Theory”.
D. To help readers deal with phenomena related to the “Broken Window Theory”.
30. What does the underlined word “identical” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. clean B. expensive C. private D. similar
31. What can we know from the passage?
A. Bullying becomes serious because small misbehavior is neglected.
B. Sidewalks become dirty because no cleaners clean them up.
C. The car was stolen because it was left out for a long time.
D. Learning environment was destroyed because of smartphones.
32. What advice is given to students?
A. Stopping bad behaviors. B. Fighting back against bullying.
C. Refusing to follow bad behaviors. D. Obeying school rules.

Scrooge was a cold, greedy, mean, old man! The cold within him froze his old face. It made his eyes red and his thin lips blue. And it spoke out in his unkind voice. A frost (霜) covered his head, his eyebrows, and his pointed chin. His office was quite cold even at Christmas.
Nobody ever stopped Scrooge in the street to say, “My dear Scrooge. How are you?” No beggars asked him for a penny. No children asked him, “What time is it?” No man or woman ever asked Scrooge for directions. And even dogs ran away from him.
Once upon a time, on Christmas Eve, old Scrooge sat in his office. It was a cold and foggy day. He could hear the people outside, stamping their feet on the pavement to warm themselves. It was only three o'clock, but it was already quite dark. The candles were flickering (闪烁) in the windows of the neighbouring offices. The fog poured in through every keyhole. It was so thick that you could hardly see the houses on the other side of the street.
The door of Scrooge’s office was open so that he could keep his eye on his clerk (职员), Bob Cratchit. Bob sat in a cold, dark and small room. He was writing letters. Scrooge had a very small fire, but Bob’s fire was even smaller. Bob couldn’t add any more coal because Scrooge kept the coal box in his room. So Bob put on his winter woolen scarf and tried to warm himself by the candle.
“Merry Christmas, Uncle, and God bless you!” cried a happy voice. It was Scrooge’s nephew (侄子) Fred.
“Bah!” said Scrooge. “Humbug (胡说)!”
“Christmas is a humbug, Uncle!” said Scrooge’s nephew. “You don’t mean that, I’m sure.”
“I do,” said Scrooge. “Merry Christmas! What reason have you got to be happy? You’re poor to be happy.”
“Oh,” said his nephew, laughing. “What reason have you got to be sad? You’re rich enough. Don’t be angry, Uncle!” said his nephew.
“What else can I be?” replied Scrooge. “I live in a world of fools. Merry Christmas! What’s Christmas time to you? It’s a time for paying bills without money. It’s a time for finding yourself a year older, but no richer,” said Scrooge.
— Taken from A Christmas Carol
33. What does the underlined word “It” refer to in the third paragraph?
A. The weather. B. The window. C. The fog. D. The candle.
34. Why did Bob put on his winter woolen scarf and try to warm himself by the candle?
A. Because the candle could keep him warm enough.
B. Because he lost all his money.
C. Because the door of Scrooge’s office was open.
D. Because Scrooge wasn’t willing to give him coal to warm the room.
35. What can we know from the conversations between Scrooge and his nephew?
A. Scrooge cared for nothing but money.
B. Scrooge cared a lot about his nephew.
C. Scrooge’s nephew didn’t feel happy on Christmas Eve.
D. Scrooge’s nephew didn’t understand why Scrooge felt so happy on Christmas Eve.
36. What can we infer from the passage?

A. whether; to visit B. if; to visit C. whether; to be visited D. if; to be visited

whether是否;if是否;to visit去参观,动词不定式主动形式;to be visited去参观,动词不定式被动形式。介词about后面的宾语从句,只能用whether,不能用if。在“the best city to do”结构中,用不定式主动形式表达被动含义,表达“用来……的城市”,所以第二个空用to visit。

第一空考查固定搭配have trouble (in) doing sth.,意为“做某事有困难”,介词in可以省略,后面要跟动名词形式,所以第一空用keeping;第二空考查固定结构find it +形容词+for sb. to do sth.,意为“发现做某事对某人来说是……的”,这里it是形式宾语,真正的宾语是后面的不定式短语,不能用that作形式宾语,所以第二空用it。应填keeping;it。

gave up“放弃”、showed off“炫耀”、dealt with“处理”均不符合表达观点的语境。

【答案】29. C 30. D 31. A 32. C

【32题详解】

A. The weather. B. The window. C. The fog. D. The candle.

A. Scrooge was kind and generous. B. Scrooge’s clerks were stupid.
