The first time I seriously questioned my own judgment was not during a math exam or a college interview, but on a sticky July afternoon, surrounded by the deafening silence of a party that nobody attended. My name is Dorian, and I was turning seventeen — a milestone that had somehow been reduced to a hollow (空洞的) joke.
It had all begun with a miscalculation so silly that I still feel awkward whenever I think about it. Having misread the group chat’s calendar, I had firmly believed that my closest friends — Elias, Thalia, and the rest — were planning secretly to throw a surprise party for me. Consequently, I spent three weeks making overly obvious suggestions about my favorite cake flavors, expecting a grand celebration. What I failed to realize, however, was that the event they were actually planning was a farewell (欢送) gathering for a teacher who was transferring to another school.
The conflict of these two separate universes occurred at precisely 4 pm three weeks later. While I stood in my mother’s newly cleaned living room, wearing a silly party hat and waiting for the doorbell to ring, I received a single text from Elias: “Dorian, where are you? We’re all at the school gym. Coach Miller’s leaving.” The shock was physically painful; I felt my face burn with an embarrassment so intense that I briefly considered pretending an illness just to escape the situation.
Eventually, I had to choose between feeling sorry for myself and saving the day. Grabbing a box of dark chocolates from the table, I ran all the way to the gym, arriving breathless just as the speeches were ending. Rather than accusing them of forgetting me, I handed the gift to Coach Miller and simply said, “I heard you like dark chocolate.” It was a lie, of course, but watching his face light up made the lie feel kinder than the truth would have been. This taught me that the world does not exist to meet my expectations.
4.Why did Dorian expect a party?
A.He misunderstood group messages. B.His friends planned a big get-together.
C.His classmates reminded him clearly. D.He decided to give a teacher a surprise.
5.What happened to Dorian that afternoon three weeks later?
A.He forgot the party totally. B.The party began ahead of time.
C.No guests showed up at his home. D.Miller sent him congratulations.
6.What did Dorian do after he learned about the truth?
A.He behaved thoughtfully. B.He forgave his friends’ mistake.
C.He told the truth to his coach. D.He held another celebration party.
7.What does the author intend to tell readers?
A.Staying with like-minded friends. B.Avoiding becoming self-centered.
C.Valuing the roles of lies in daily life. D.Learning to face sudden embarrassment.

Rich countries are racing to dematerialize payments. They need to do more to prepare for the side effects.
For the past 3,000 years, when people thought of money they thought of cash. Now, however, digital payments have taken off. Now this revolution is about turning cash into an endangered species in some rich economies. That will make the economy more efficient — but it also causes new problems that could hold back the transition (转型) .
Countries are removing cash at varying speeds. In Sweden, the number of retail (零售) cash transactions per person has fallen by 80% in the past ten years. America is perhaps a decade behind. Outside the rich world, cash is still king. But even there its leading role is being challenged. In China digital payments rose from 24% of all payments in 2017 to 56% in 2022.
Cash is dying out because of two forces. One is demand — younger consumers want payment systems that plug easily into their digital lives. But what’s equally important is that suppliers such as banks and tech firms are developing fast, easy-to-use payment technologies from which they can pull data and pocket fees. There is a high cost of running the infrastructure (基础设施) behind the cash economy — ATMs, vans carrying notes, and tellers who accept coins. Most financial firms are keen to abandon it, or discourage old-fashioned customers with heavy fees.
In the main, the prospect of a cashless economy is excellent news. When payment is dematerialized, people and shops are less open to theft. It also creates a credit history, helping consumers borrow. Yet set against these benefits are a couple of worries. Electronic payment systems may risk technical failures, power failures and cyberattacks. In a cashless economy, the poor, the elderly and countrymen may be left behind.
8.What are some rich countries trying to do?
A.Develop their infrastructure. B.Get rid of the side effects of cash.
C.Make cash an endangered species. D.Promote payment without paper money.
9.Why are several countries mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A.To show that cash is still king across the world.
B.To show digital payments are becoming an unstoppable trend.
C.To show the differences between rich countries and poor countries.
D.To show China is developing faster than rich countries in digital payment.
10.Why is cash disappearing to a great degree?
A.The infrastructure is developing at a high speed.
B.Financial firms want to abandon old-fashioned customers.
C.Suppliers are trying to reduce costs and obtain money and data.
D.Younger consumers are short of money to live their digital lives.
11.What’s the author’s attitude toward digitalized payment?
A.Favorable. B.Negative. C.Objective. D.Unclear.
D
According to a new study published in the journal Science, rats, like humans, can use their brains to imagine walking to a new location or moving a virtual item to a new place, even when they are physically sitting still.
Scientists think much of the human imagination is controlled by the hippocampus (海马体), a region of the brain that plays a role in memory and learning, which makes humans able to navigate (导航) an environment using just their thoughts. The hippocampus is also involved in rats’ spatial memory. But researchers have long wondered whether rats can navigate an environment like humans can. The problem, until now, was finding a way to test that.
For the new experiment, scientists spent years developing virtual reality for rats — a brain machine that could help them answer this question. First, they implanted electrodes (电极) into the animals’ brains to record activity in their hippocampus. Then, they put the animals just on a ball-shaped running machine and supported them with a 360-degree screen showing a virtual reality environment.
As the rats ran on the running machine, they moved through the virtual environment in the screen. Researchers trained them to navigate to specific areas by rewarding them with a bit of sugar water. In another part of the experiment, they severed the running machine, leaving the rats to navigate the virtual reality environment using only their minds. In this task, the brain machine translated the animals’ brain activity into motion on the screen. When the rats recreated the hippocampus activity associated with a specific location, the screen jumped to that site, where the rats got a reward.
Three of the four rats tested were able to navigate the virtual reality tasks, according to The Washington Post. Together, the findings indicate rats can mentally navigate environments they’ve visited in the past, just like humans do. Rats can also, it seems, hold their thoughts on a specific location for several seconds.
12.What once confused the scientists before the experiment?
A.How rats’ hippocampus works. B.The location of rats’ hippocampus.
C.The structure of rats’ hippocampus. D.Whether rats have the ability to navigate.
13.What does the underlined word “severed” in paragraph 4 mean?
A.Showed off. B.Switched off. C.Turned on. D.Gave away.
14.What can we conclude from the findings?
A.The rats can go somewhere by memory.
B.The rats can focus their minds for a long time.
C.The rats can translate the brain activity into motion.
D.The rats can imagine something they’ve never seen.
15.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.Rats Can Use Imagination As Well As Humans Do
B.Scientists Used Brain Machine to Test Rats’ Imagination
C.Rats Can Use Imagination to Navigate in Virtual Reality
D.Scientists Invented a Machine That Creates Virtual Reality

In the fast-paced world of 2026, many people find themselves feeling stressed, tired, or disconnected from their own well-being. The good news is that small, science-backed changes to your daily routine can make a big difference in how you feel. 16 These simple daily practices don’t require much time or money, but they can help boost your mood and improve your overall quality of life.
One of the most effective ways to feel better is to prioritize daily movement. It’s not about doing intense workouts, but about staying active in a way that works for you. 17 Simply walking, stretching, or dancing to your favorite music can release endorphins (内啡肽), which help reduce stress and lift your mood.
18 The key practice is getting enough quality sleep. Many people underestimate the importance of sleep, but it’s essential for both physical and mental health. Avoiding screens an hour before bed and creating a calm bedtime routine can help you fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly.
Connecting with others is crucial for emotional well-being as well. 19 In an era of constant digital communication, face-to-face interactions can feel rare, but they’re vital for building meaningful relationships. Spending time with others can reduce feelings of loneliness and increase feelings of happiness.
Finally, don’t forget to take time for yourself. In a world that often values busyness, it’s important to carve out moments of relaxation. This could be reading a book or practicing meditation and enjoying the present moment. 20
A.You don’t have to push yourself too hard.
B.Taking deep breaths can help calm your mind.
C.Beyond physical activity, good mental rest also matters.
D.Spending time in nature is also a great way to reduce stress.
E.They can bring great benefits to your mental and physical health.
F.Yet nothing can compare with the comfort of in-person connections.
G.Taking care of your own needs isn’t selfish-it’s essential for well-being.

The ink brush, or maobi, is far more than a simple writing instrument; it is a cornerstone of East Asian art and philosophy. For over two thousand years, it 36 (be) the primary tool for calligraphy and traditional painting in China, Japan, ROK, and DPRK, shaping 37 unique visual culture that values both skill and inner cultivation.
What makes the ink brush truly special is its flexible tip, 38 (traditional) made from animal hair like rabbit, goat, or wolf. This flexibility allows the artist 39 (create) an extraordinary range of strokes —from razor-thin lines to bold, sweeping washes — simply by adjusting 40 (press) and angle. This dynamic quality means that every brushstroke is alive, 41 (capture) the energy and emotion of the moment.
Using an ink brush is a disciplined art form. Calligraphers must control 42 (they) breath, posture, and mind, as even a slight tremor can change the work’s entire character. Therefore, it is often seen as a path to self-cultivation, 43 the pursuit of beauty is inseparable 44 the pursuit of personal harmony. Mark Junker, a 57-year-old experienced hiker, went hiking along Juan de Fuca Marine Trail with his 18-year-old daughter Sophia last Friday. They had enjoyed a quiet night camping beside the beach and planned to march to Chin Beach as their next stop. The trail was wet and muddy due to recent rains lasting for several days. To avoid messy branches stretching across the track, Mark stepped off the marked path, thinking the smooth ground covered with dead leaves ahead was firmer to walk on.
Unexpectedly, his legs sank instantly into thick hidden clay covered by fallen leaves. Soon he was trapped up to his hips in the sticky mud pit (泥潭). He took off his heavy backpack loaded with camping supplies and struggled hard to pull himself free, yet every move only made him sink deeper into the cold mud. Sophia tried her best to drag him out with trekking poles (登山杖), but she was far too weak to move his body a little. Worse still, there was no cell signal deep in the forest, leaving them unable to call for emergency help.
Minutes passed and Mark began to shiver from cold and fear creeping over him. They shouted repeatedly at the top of their voices, hoping passers-by would hear their desperate cries. Soon two hikers appeared and tried to pull Mark backward with combined strength, but the clay held him tightly. They continued to cry for assistance for almost an hour until they were exhausted to utter a single word.
Cold wind swept through the woods as the sky gradually darkened. Mark felt hopeless, wondering if he could get out before night fell and surrounded them with total darkness. Just then, a group of six hikers with rich outdoor experience walked toward them.

根据第一段“Rich countries are racing to dematerialize payments. (富裕国家正在竞相实现支付非物质化。)”可知,富裕国家正努力减少现金的使用,推广不用纸币的电子支付方式。
9.推理判断题。根据第三段“Countries are removing cash at varying speeds. In Sweden, the number of retail (零售) cash transactions per person has fallen by 80% in the past ten years. (各国正在以不同的速度减少现金使用。在瑞典,过去十年间人均零售现金交易量下降了80%。)”可知,本段旨在说明各国都在减少现金使用,接下来以瑞典的数据来说明现金交易量的减少。再根据最后一句“In China digital payments rose from 24% of all payments in 2017 to 56% in 2022. (在中国,数字支付从2017年占所有支付的24%上升到2022年的56%)”可知,中国数字支付占比大幅增加,这些数据共同说明电子支付正在全球范围内成为不可阻挡的趋势。
10.细节理解题。根据第四段“But what’s equally important is that suppliers such as banks and tech firms are developing fast, easy-to-use payment technologies from which they can pull data and pocket fees. There is a high cost of running the infrastructure (基础设施) behind the cash economy — ATMs, vans carrying notes, and tellers who accept coins. (但同样重要的是,银行和科技公司等供应商正在开发快速、易用的支付技术,从中他们可以提取数据并收取费用。运行现金经济背后的基础设施——自动取款机、运钞车和接受硬币的出纳员——成本很高。)”可知,现金消亡的原因之一是供应商为了降低基础设施运行成本并从新支付技术中获取数据和费用而大力推广电子支付。
11.推理判断题。通读全文尤其是最后一段“In the main, the prospect of a cashless economy is excellent news. When payment is dematerialized, people and shops are less open to theft. It also creates a credit history, helping consumers borrow. Yet set against these benefits are a couple of worries. Electronic payment systems may risk technical failures, power failures and cyberattacks. In a cashless economy, the poor, the elderly and countrymen may be left behind.(总的来说,无现金经济的前景是个大好消息。
【答案】12.D 13.B 14.A 15.C
根据原文第二段“But researchers have long wondered whether rats can navigate an environment like humans can.(但是研究人员一直想知道老鼠是否能够像人类一样对环境进行导航。)”
根据原文第四段“As the rats ran on the running machine, they moved through the virtual environment in the screen.(当老鼠在跑步机上奔跑时,它们就在屏幕的虚拟环境中移动。)”以及“In another part of the experiment, they severed the running machine, leaving the rats to navigate the virtual reality environment using only their minds.(在实验的另一部分,他们severed跑步机,让老鼠只依靠大脑思维来导航虚拟现实环境。)”
根据原文第五段“Together, the findings indicate rats can mentally navigate environments they’ve visited in the past, just like humans do.(总而言之,这些研究结果表明老鼠可以像人类一样,在脑海中对它们曾经去过的环境进行导航。)”
根据原文第一段“According to a new study published in the journal Science, rats, like humans, can use their brains to imagine walking to a new location or moving a virtual item to a new place, even when they are physically sitting still.(根据发表在《科学》期刊上的一项新研究,老鼠和人类一样,即便身体保持静止,也可以用大脑想象走到新地点或者把虚拟物品移动到新位置。)”

The experienced group quickly came up with a practical rescue plan. They laid waterproof mats on the mud and crawled carefully toward Mark. One tied a rope around his waist while another extended a trekking pole for him to grip. At the count of three, they pulled steadily together. After several rounds of careful effort, Mark’s hips rose inch by inch and his legs were nearly freed, yet the thick clay still gripped his ankles tightly. They paused to adjust their strategy, and the group leader encouraged him to stay calm and trust their teamwork.
Mark was close to escaping the mud pit after hours. With one final coordinated pull, his legs were completely released from the sticky trap. Exhausted but safe, he leaned against a tree with a relieved smile. Sophia hugged him tightly, tears rolling down her cheeks. Mark thanked the group sincerely, admitting that even experienced hikers can fall into unexpected danger. He also reflected that this frightening experience taught him a valuable lesson: never underestimate nature’s traps and always stay on the marked path. More importantly, he felt deeply grateful for the kindness of strangers, which turned a potential disaster into a life-changing memory.
