Clarke Reynolds, a 45-year-old blind artist, plans to run the Brighton Marathon using technology that connects him to sighted volunteers in real time.
Reynolds, known as “Mr. Dot”, creates braille (盲文) art to raise awareness of sight loss. He has been visually impaired (受损的) in his right eye since age six, and lost vision in his left eye 13 years ago. He now describes his sight as “being underwater” — able to see shapes, shadows and some colour. He once created a braille copy of Nirvana’s “Nevermind” album cover.
Three years ago, he completed the London Marathon with a physical guide runner. Later this month, he’ll be running the Brighton Marathon — but he is taking his challenge to a new level. Rather than using a physical guide, he will use an app called Be My Eyes to connect him with a worldwide network of sighted volunteers. Using the camera and speakers on his smart glasses, the volunteers will be able to see what he sees and speak to him in real time, directing him through the 26.2 miles.
“They tell me if there’s a bin or a parked car,” he says. “But most of the time we just discuss what sight loss is.” Be My Eyes is normally used for daily tasks, like helping a visually impaired person find the right button on a TV remote. Reynolds activates it by saying, “Hey Meta, come be my eyes.” The volunteers also act as his cheerleaders.
He has trained by running laps on the 0.7-mile road where he lives — a route he knows by heart. Over 100 people have supported him, some from as far as Jordan. The volunteers for race day are being organized by Fight for Sight, a charity funding sight loss research, for which Reynolds is an ambassador.
A backup guide runner will be ready in case the technology fails. Although he was daunted before the London Marathon, he feels confident about Brighton. “If you had told me 13 years ago that I’d be inspiring visually impaired children around the world, I’d never have believed you,” he says.
24.Why does Reynolds mention “being underwater”?
A.To explain his poor and foggy vision.
B.To show his passion for underwater sports.
C.To describe the feeling of creating braille art.
D.To stress the difficulty of running a marathon.
25.How will Reynolds run the Brighton Marathon differently?
A.By using smart glasses. B.By using separate speakers.
C.With a physical guide runner. D.With volunteers running beside him.
26.What role do the volunteers play?
A.They are on-site cheerleaders.
B.They are professional marathon athletes.
C.They promote the app through TV remotes.
D.They provide practical and emotional support.
27.What does the underlined word “daunted” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Overjoyed. B.Scared. C.Enthusiastic. D.Regretful.

On a sunny day, buildings absorb much of the sun’s radiation and quickly heat up. Now, researchers from the USA, China, Singapore and Sweden have succeeded in creating a variety of advanced thin metamaterials which not only block solar radiation but also emit heat, hence lowering the indoor temperature. One of the materials can be brushed as paint.
“A roof painted with the specially designed material maintained an indoor temperature 5.6 degrees lower than another building painted with conventional white paint,” says Max Yan, Associate Professor at Umea University and co-author of the study published in Nature.
Metamaterials are artificially engineered materials with properties that are superior to those found in natural materials. Developing cooling metamaterials has previously been a time-consuming process where researchers had to rely on trial and error. The new method is based on artificial intelligence (AI), which in just a few days can generate thousands of complex structures with the desired properties of reflecting solar radiation and emitting thermal radiation (热辐射). The best candidates are then identified in terms of mass producibility and cost.
The new paint can provide significant energy savings by reducing the need for air conditioning. Calculations show that if the paint is applied to the roof of a typical four-storey apartment building with a roof area of 780 square metres in Bangkok, it could save about 12,000 kilowatt hours of electricity annually. In addition to being used on buildings, the new paint can be applied to other objects, such as cars, trains, or machines.
In the longer term, the technology might be used for adjusting the climate on a global scale. “Will the massive application of this type of radiative cooling metamaterial help to slow down global warming? I have not spent much time on this question, but I would say it is worth investigating,” says Max Yan. In countries with cold winters, like Sweden, the AI approach can be adapted to design thin materials or paint that can help preserve heat in buildings.
28.What does Max Yan’s research focus on?
A.Comparing the effects of different paints. B.Using AI to analyse building materials.
C.Upgrading the traditional white paint. D.Designing materials to cool buildings.
29.What does the example of the apartment building in Bangkok illustrate?
A.The effectiveness of the new paint. B.The demand for cooling in hot climates.
C.The primary market for the new product. D.The urgent need to reduce electricity costs.
30.Why does the author mention Sweden in the last paragraph?
A.To credit a research partner in the study.
B.To propose a better solution to extreme weather.
C.To reveal the AI method’s broader potential.
D.To highlight a major limitation of the AI-created paint.
31.What is the best title for the text?
A.AI Enhances the Research of Paint B.A New Cooling Paint Brings Changes
C.A New Solution to Global Warming D.Metamaterials Beat Natural Materials

No social media. No alcohol or junk food. Sounds dull? Welcome to your dopamine detox Popular among Silicon Valley types, the idea is to stay away from quick-hit rewards in the hope of rediscovering simpler pleasures. The claim is that all these things overstimulate the brain’s dopamine system, causing it to become less responsive and leaving people burnt out.
Taking a purifying break from bad habits is not a new concept. Where it goes wrong is the biochemistry. Enthusiasts imagine that dopamine is the “pleasure molecule (分子)”; a limited resource that can be exhausted by overuse.
That is not how dopamine works. It is involved not just in reward, but also in learning and movement. Fully detoxing from it would be disastrous. Parkinson’s disease, for example, is caused by the loss of dopamine-producing neurons (神经元).
Instead, bursts of it signal surprise — what scientists call a reward-prediction error. When something turns out better than expected, dopamine-producing neurons fire more often than usual. When it turns out worse, they fire less. These sharp rises are teaching signals, strengthening connections between neurons and helping the brain learn which actions are worth repeating.
Eventually behaviour that used to be deliberate, such as selecting an app to message a friend, can become automatic: opening it absent-mindedly every time your phone lights up. Habits can be useful, but they can also be traps. Once a behaviour has become habitual, it can persist even when the outcome itself provides no pleasure. In many ways, apps are designed to be habit-forming, says Georgia Turner, a neuroscientist at Cambridge University, with algorithmic feeds providing a steady flow of low-effort, unpredictable rewards.
Several studies have tested what happens when people take time away from social media. Most find that brief breaks do little for well-being, perhaps because there are short-term costs to being disconnected from social networks. When entire social groups stop using the apps for longer, results seem better. In one school-wide experiment in Britain, conducted by researchers from the University of York, students avoided social media for three weeks and, afterwards, reported better sleep and mood. A dopamine detox, in other words, may well be worth trying.
32.What’s the purpose of people advocating dopamine detox?
A.To refresh one’s brain. B.To remove daily boredom.
C.To reproduce dopamine. D.To refuse social interaction.
33.Why does the author mention Parkinson’s disease?
A.To introduce a common illness. B.To warn harm of physical aging.
C.To prove dopamine’s necessity. D.To explain the effects of neurons.
34.What do we know about dopamine?
A.It is just the joy molecule. B.It serves multiple functions.
C.It causes Parkinson’s directly. D.It can be fully swallowed up.
35.Which method works better for the detox?
A.Long-time group quitting. B.Brief personal separation.
C.Restricting individual use. D.Developing different hobbies.
If you look around, you’ll notice one key quality in all self-made people. 36 These people are masters at the art of learning. Before starting a project, they make sure they understand what they’re getting themselves into. And this quality alone helps them avoid dozens of barriers in the way. But to be a successful learner, there are a lot of other qualities you’ll need to develop.
Successful learners understand that learning takes time. For them, persistence (坚持不懈) is the key to success because nothing worth learning is learned in a day or two. 37 But only a handful of people manage to accomplish the goals and targets they set for themselves, because others usually don’t put in the amount of work needed to achieve their goals.
Successful learners also believe in understanding and grasping concepts instead of rote (死记硬背) learning. 38 That’s because what matters is the understanding of the concept, not the final grade. In real life, the concept is what helps you to apply your learning and get something out of it. That’s why successful learners spend more time building and strengthening their concepts than they do on rote learning.
39 People usually recognize them as learned individuals that need to be respected on the basis of their knowledge. Often, that knowledge results in lots of wealth, which further helps in improving the social status of these individuals.
Of course, there are many different types of learners in society. Some people learn best by listening while others write things down. Besides, there are individuals that like to have a hands-on learning experience. Successful learners know what sort of learning style works best for them. This allows them to choose their learning methods according to their preferred style. 40
A.They know what they’re doing in life.
B.Successful learners are leaders by nature.
C.As a result, they can maximize their learning.
D.They hold the view that grades aren’t so important.
E.But not everyone has the courage to learn everything.
F.Almost everyone has grand ideas and ambitions in life.
G.Successful learners are often important people in social gatherings.

Carlos, a music teacher, was preparing a dance for the school show, whose theme was spring.
Every afternoon, the music room was filled with laughter and the light thud (咚咚声) of little feet. Carlos taught the students movements that celebrated the season. He loved watching them bounce, spin, and leap to the rhythm. The room was alive with energy, alive with motion, alive with spring.
But there was something that weighed on his heart. A girl named Luna always sat quietly in the corner. Carlos knew that Luna had difficulty walking. Her legs did not move like those of the other children.
Day after day, he saw her sitting there, and each time he felt a knot tighten in his stomach. He noticed the way her eyes followed the other children as they moved across the floor. There was longing in those eyes — a quiet, painful wish to be one of them. He wanted to include her. But how? The dance had been built around movements Luna could not do.
Then one afternoon, Carlos was demonstrating a new set of steps. Soft music drifted through the room — a gentle tune about spring, about tiny green shoots pushing through the cold earth. The students followed along, pretending to be seeds waking from winter sleep.
Carlos turned around to check on their progress. That was when he saw Luna. She was still sitting in her corner, but her small hands were moving gently in the air. Her fingers opened like tender leaves unfolding. They reached upward like a young plant searching for sunlight after a long winter. Her upper body swayed (摇摆) slightly, like a small tree bending in a soft spring breeze (风).
She was not just watching. She was dancing with her hands — a small, quiet dance of spring, of life beginning again. She looked like a tiny tree, still delicate, yet already reaching for the light. Her fingers trembled like new leaves, fragile in the cold air, yet brave enough to appear.

SHE asked how I manage to pass so many tough exams and graduate, even though I wasn't fond of medical school. Well, for that, I want to share with you two easy steps. Step one, know what the exam is really about. When you fill a bucket, always put in the big rocks first. The smaller rocks will then automatically filled the remaining spaces, concentrate on the key areas the exam is testing, and don't stress about obscure details. To do this, review past exam papers, organize them by topic and study the main types of questions commonly tested in each step to practice, practice and practice. Possessing knowledge is one thing, but being able to apply IT in an exam is another. The ability to recall knowledge is important. One effective study method is teaching somebody else. I also recommend drawing mind maps, which is my personal favorite. Additionally, using tables to compare elements helps you remember and hence recall knowledge Better.
【答案】24.A 25.A 26.D 27.B
根据第二段中的“He has been visually impaired in his right eye since age six, and lost vision in his left eye 13 years ago. He now describes his sight as “being underwater” — able to see shapes, shadows and some colour.(他六岁起右眼视力受损,十三年前左眼完全失明,如今用“置身水下”形容视力状况,仅能看清轮廓、阴影与部分色彩。)”
根据第三段中的“Rather than using a physical guide, he will use an app called Be My Eyes to connect him with a worldwide network of sighted volunteers. Using the camera and speakers on his smart glasses, the volunteers will be able to see what he sees and speak to him in real time.(他不再依靠实体导盲辅助工具,而是借助一款名为Be My Eyes的应用,接入全球视力正常志愿者的互助网络。志愿者可通过他智能眼镜上的摄像头与扬声器,实时看到他眼前的景象,并和他即时对话。)”可知,本次马拉松的不同之处在于使用智能眼镜辅助前行。
26.细节理解题。根据第四段中的““They tell me if there’s a bin or a parked car,” he says.(他说:“他们会告诉我前方有没有垃圾桶或是停放的汽车。”)”以及“The volunteers also act as his cheerleaders.(志愿者们还充当他的啦啦队。)”
根据最后一段中的“Although he was daunted before the London Marathon, he feels confident about Brighton.(虽然参加伦敦马拉松前他很daunted,但这次面对布莱顿马拉松,他充满信心。)”

【答案】28.D 29.A 30.C 31.B
根据第一段“Now, researchers from the USA, China, Singapore and Sweden have succeeded in creating a variety of advanced thin metamaterials which not only block solar radiation but also emit heat, hence lowering the indoor temperature.(如今,来自美国、中国、新加坡和瑞典的研究人员成功研制出了一系列先进的超薄超材料。这些材料不仅能阻挡太阳辐射,还能散发热量,从而降低室内温度)”可知,马克斯·扬的研究重点是设计用于为建筑物降温的材料。
29.细节理解题。根据第四段“The new paint can provide significant energy savings by reducing the need for air conditioning. Calculations show that if the paint is applied to the roof of a typical four-storey apartment building with a roof area of 780 square metres in Bangkok, it could save about 12,000 kilowatt hours of electricity annually. In addition to being used on buildings, the new paint can be applied to other objects, such as cars, trains, or machines.(这种新型涂料能够显著降低空调的使用需求,从而节省大量能源。计算表明,如果将这种涂料涂覆在曼谷一座四层公寓楼的屋顶上(该楼屋顶面积为 780 平方米),每年可节省约 12000 千瓦时的电力。除了用于建筑物外,这种新型涂料还可应用于其他物体,如汽车、火车或机器)”可知,曼谷那座公寓楼的例子说明了新涂料的有效性。
30.推理判断题。根据最后一段“In the longer term, the technology might be used for adjusting the climate on a global scale. “Will the massive application of this type of radiative cooling metamaterial help to slow down global warming? I have not spent much time on this question, but I would say it is worth investigating,” says Max Yan. In countries with cold winters, like Sweden, the AI approach can be adapted to design thin materials or paint that can help preserve heat in buildings.(从长远来看,这项技术或许能够用于在全球范围内调节气候。“这种类型的辐射冷却超材料的大规模应用是否有助于减缓全球变暖呢?我对此尚未深入研究,但我觉得值得探讨一下。”马克斯·扬说道。在冬季寒冷的国家,比如瑞典,这种人工智能方法可以被应用于设计薄材料或涂料,以帮助建筑物保持热量)”可知,作者在最后一段提及瑞典是为了揭示人工智能方法更广泛的应用潜力。
31.主旨大意题。根据第一段“Now, researchers from the USA, China, Singapore and Sweden have succeeded in creating a variety of advanced thin metamaterials which not only block solar radiation but also emit heat, hence lowering the indoor temperature.(如今,来自美国、中国、新加坡和瑞典的研究人员成功研制出了一系列先进的超薄超材料。这些材料不仅能阻挡太阳辐射,还能散发热量,从而降低室内温度)”结合文章说明了多国研究者借助AI研制出新型降温涂料,涂刷屋面可降温省电,还能用于车船,该技术经调整也可在寒区实现建筑保温。可知,B选项“一种新型降温涂料带来了变化”最符合文章标题。

【答案】32.A 33.C 34.B 35.A
根据第一段中的“Popular among Silicon Valley types, the idea is to stay away from quick-hit rewards in the hope of rediscovering simpler pleasures. The claim is that all these things overstimulate the brain’s dopamine system, causing it to become less responsive and leaving people burnt out.(该理念在硅谷人群中盛行,即远离即时快感,希望重拾简单乐趣。人们称各类消遣过度刺激大脑多巴胺系统,使其反应变弱、让人身心疲惫。)”可知,人们推崇多巴胺戒断是为了让大脑恢复状态、重新焕发活力。
33.推理判断题。根据第三段中的“Fully detoxing from it would be disastrous. Parkinson’s disease, for example, is caused by the loss of dopamine-producing neurons (神经元). (彻底戒除多巴胺会酿成严重后果,例如帕金森病就是由分泌多巴胺的神经元受损引发的。)”可知,作者举例帕金森病,用以证明多巴胺对人体必不可少。
34.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“That is not how dopamine works. It is involved not just in reward, but also in learning and movement.(多巴胺并非只作用于愉悦感知,它还参与人体学习与肢体活动过程。)”
根据最后一段中的“When entire social groups stop using the apps for longer, results seem better.(当整个社交群体长期停用应用软件时,戒断效果会更好。)”

Discovering the Beauty on Campus
There is endless beauty on our campus, which I have deeply felt since the essay activity held last Friday in our English class.
It is not just the fresh green lawns, vibrant blooming flowers and tall shade trees along the path that make our campus beautiful. More importantly, it is the warm moments: teachers’ patient guidance when I’m confused and classmates’ sincere help when I’m in trouble.

Carlos felt something hit his chest — a tiny tree. In that moment, he understood. Luna did not need to copy the other children’s jumps and turns. She could become the very heart of the dance. She could be a little tree in spring — still, quiet, yet full of life. The other children could dance around her like wind, rain, and sunlight. Carlos walked over, knelt beside her, and gently told her what he had in mind. “Your hands are beautiful,” he said softly. “They can tell the story of spring.” Luna looked up at him, surprised. Then her eyes slowly lit up. She nodded eagerly, her face shining with joy, for nothing made her happier than the thought of finally joining the performance.
Then came the school show. Warm golden light fell across the stage as the music began, soft and hopeful. The other children skipped and twirled like spring breezes, full of energy and delight. But at the center of the stage sat Luna, dressed in pale green. Slowly, her hands rose into the light. Her fingers trembled, opened, and stretched upward like new leaves reaching for the sun. Around her, the other children moved in circles like wind dancing through the trees. The audience grew quiet, watching her every movement. And when her hands finally opened wide, as if a tiny tree had fully awakened to spring, the hall burst into applause. Carlos felt tears sting his eyes. At that moment, Luna was no longer the girl who sat in the corner. She had become spring itself.
