Xu Congxiang, 69, a major grain grower in Taihe County, East China’s Anhui Province, reached a record harvest this year, with the wheat yield on his demonstration (示范) farm over 800 kilograms per mu (0.067 hectares). “In the 1970s, most of China’s wheat yield per mu was under 300 kg. Now, as farming technology continues to improve, our grain output has increased greatly,” recalls Xu.
A few decades ago, when Xu was under 20 and had just graduated from high school, he returned to his hometown and became a farmer, embarking on his journey of exploring new ways to increase grain yield through science and technology. Back then, a magnifying glass (放大镜) was Xu’s best helper for field observation. Taking a magnifying glass and a notebook, Xu used to set off into the fields at dawn and stayed there until the moon rose.
“At that time, there was no advanced equipment, such as an insect monitor. We could only use a magnifying glass to observe very small changes in the crops. Some tiny spots on the leaves could be the signal of the output reduction,” says Xu. During those years, Xu wrote many notebooks, which contained detailed information including the time and degree of wind and the growth status of crops. With his rich experience, Xu summed up the methods in the green and efficient cultivation (栽培) of wheat and promoted them to the surrounding farmers.
Under his influence, Xu’s children followed his footsteps to work in agriculture and achieved further breakthroughs. His family focuses on developing high-quality varieties and exploring high-yield cultivation techniques. Since the beginning of this year, a total of fifty new grain varieties have been planted in the experimental field, and seven experiments have been conducted. In Xu’s opinion, modern agricultural science and technology should be applied to help modern farmers increase yield, and he will make continuous efforts in this field.
24. What does Xu Congxiang want to show by his words in Paragraph 1?
A. His sweet memory of the past. B. The progress of agriculture in China.
C. His pride in working as a farmer. D. The history of a demonstration farm.
25. What does the underlined phrase “embarking on” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Continuing. B. Changing. C. Starting. D. Planning.
26. What can we learn about Xu’s children?
A. They are occupied with different jobs.
B. They devote themselves to agriculture.
C. They have created 50 new grain varieties.
D. They promote cultivation methods to other farmers.
27. Which of the following can best describe Xu Congxiang?
A. Confident and creative. B. Curious and selfless.
C. Hardworking and determined. D. Easygoing and independent.
【答案】24. B 25. C 26. B 27. C

In mid-February 2026, several Chinese humanoid robots (人形机器人) took center stage at the country’s annual Spring Festival Gala, widely considered the world’s most-watched television program. The show featured robots from multiple startups performing synchronized (同步的) kung fu moves, dances, and gymnastics routines.
The performance contrasted sharply with the 2025 gala, when earlier humanoid models appeared less capable and performed a wobbly folk dance. Within a year, however, improvements in motion control, balance and coordination have led many observers to reassess the technology’s progress. “People should absolutely be taking these robots seriously,” said Reyk Knuhtsen, an analyst at Semi Analysis. “They’re becoming visibly smoother and more capable.”
“At the early stage of humanoid robot development, Chinese companies are outpacing their U.S. rivals in both speed and volume,” said Selina Xu, a China and AI policy lead at the office of Eric Schmidt. “China has a more robust hardware supply chain — much of it built up through the EV sector, from sensors to batteries — and the world’s strongest manufacturing base, allowing companies to iterate (迭代) far faster than Western competitors.”
In 2025, Chinese companies shipped most of the roughly 13,000 humanoid robots delivered worldwide, far surpassing U.S. rivals such as Tesla and Figure AI, according to research firm Omdia. China also accounted for more than 85% of the approximately 15,000 humanoid robot installations globally in 2025, compared with about 13% in the U.S., according to data from Barclays.
Despite the technological progress showcased at the gala, analysts said significant technical problems remain before humanoid robots can operate widely in real-world environments. Knuhtsen said that the next phase will focus less on flashy demonstrations and more on the robots’ ability to reason better, work longer, and combine multiple actions to complete real-world chores.

Every school year, millions of paper textbooks are abandoned and left unused, causing massive paper waste across middle and high schools. A British environmental tech firm has created a biodegradable (生物降解的) e-paper textbook specially designed for secondary students. Unlike plastic-screen tablets with short lifespans, this lightweight device can be erased and rewritten over 500 times without damage. A 2026 UK survey of 9,000 teens found each student wasted about 12 kg of textbook paper yearly.
Its eco-friendly ink comes from plant extracts (提炼物) instead of toxic metal chemicals used in traditional e-readers. After two years’ use, users may bury the device in soil; all ink and paper layers fully decompose within three months with no toxic waste left behind. Priced at 36 pounds, it costs less than a full set of printed textbooks for a whole grade.
Cambridge environmental expert Professor Mia Carter offered mixed opinions. She admitted it greatly cut paper waste and carbon emissions, yet pointed out an obvious flaw (缺点): the plant ink cannot show vivid bright colours, making biology and art lessons dull. Her team’s trial showed students’ study efficiency rose 13% in math and history but fell 8% for image-focused subjects.
Over 20 London high schools ran a two-month trial among local teenagers. History teachers welcomed the light e-paper for quick note-taking, while art students complained about pale colours ruining drawing tasks. The firm quickly adjusted its ink formula with natural colour pigments (颜料) and released a colour-improved edition for art classes.
The startup plans to partner with global textbook publishers to upload standard teaching materials onto its digital system. Its chief designer said the product is meant to be a greener alternative rather than a total replacement for printed books. “Sustainable tech must meet students’ real learning demands instead of forcing flawed products on them,” she stated in an online interview.
32. What can we learn about the e-paper textbook?
A. It targets young kids in primary schools.
B. It has put an end to school paper waste.
C. It shares the same short life as plastic tablets.
D. It supports repeated use for hundreds of times.
33. What is the weak point of the original plant-based ink according to Professor Carter?
A. Its cost is far higher than ordinary printed textbooks.
B. It takes over half a year to break down in soil.
C. It fails to present clear colourful pictures for some subjects.
D. It reduces students’ learning speed for math subjects.
34. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The company improved its product based on students’ trial feedback.
B. All teachers hold positive attitudes toward the new e-textbooks.
C. Art students refuse to use e-paper for all school courses.
D. The trial proves the e-book works equally well for every subject.
35. What can we infer about the startup’s future plan for the e-textbook?
A. They will stop producing printed textbooks for schools.
B. They aim to create eco-friendly learning tools suitable for students.
C. They plan to raise its price to develop more colourful ink.
D. They will abandon cooperation with textbook publishers soon.

The medal was my grandfather’s Purple Heart: he earned it in a war as a soldier. It was very precious to him. The Purple Heart is only awarded to the soldiers who have been wounded when fighting against enemies in a war. It looks as it is named: a purple ribbon with a heart-shaped medal. Only on special occasions would he take it out. Every time I held the medal, my grandfather would tell me stories about it and how he was awarded it. Though I heard his story thousands of times, I was still absorbed by his words, hoping someday I could share it with more people.
The opportunity came. With our annual Show and Tell competition approaching, I finally got a proper reason to persuade myself to “borrow” my grandfather’s treasure temporarily. I had no choice but to do it because I was told the Purple Heart was not allowed to be taken out. Since I knew where my grandfather kept it, I took the medal from its box without being noticed. Nervous but determined, I held it in my hand and the medal was on its way to school with me.
After enjoying other students’ performances, I knew I would be the winner for sure. It was my turn. The moment I showed it to the class, everyone was very interested in my grandfather’s medal. None of them had ever seen one before. I was proud to tell my classmates about how my grandfather got his medal and explain to them what the medal was for. Everything went perfectly as I expected. I won! But I knew this didn’t belong to me alone: it belonged to my grandfather.
Later, it was PE lesson. I thought I should carry this medal for safety, so I kept it in my pocket and ran to the playground. Having won the competition, I was extremely excited. I pushed the medal out of my mind. It was the happiest lesson I had ever had until I accidentally fell.
Paragraph 1:
When I picked myself up, I put a trembling hand into my pocket: empty!
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
At home, with the medal in my sweating hand, I apologized to my grandfather for taking it.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
When I picked myself up, I put a trembling hand into my pocket: empty! I was too shocked to move an inch. My grandfather would be very sad when he knew I had lost his medal. I decided to keep calm and find it. I gathered all my classmates on the playground and told them what had happened. They were all willing to help me find the medal. Luckily, after searching on the playground for just a few minutes, one of my classmates found it in the corner. I was wild with joy and hugged him tightly.
Paragraph 2:
At home, with the medal in my sweating hand, I apologized to my grandfather for taking it. I had thought grandfather would be angry and scold me. To my surprise, he listened to my whole story and said that although it was impolite to take his medal without telling him, he still appreciated my honesty and calmness when facing difficulty. He even permitted me to show the medal to more people to inspire them. I was moved to tears by my grandfather and promised I would cherish the medal and wouldn’t lose it again. I learnt a lot from this incident, such as help, honesty and forgiveness.

28. Why is the 2025 gala mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. To show the role of TV programs in promoting robotics.
B. To stress the rapid progress of China’s humanoid robotics.
C. To present the challenges of developing humanoid robots.
D. To reveal the growing popularity of China’s humanoid robots.
29. What do Selina Xu’s words in paragraph 3 show?
A. China’s advantages in developing humanoid robots.
B. The necessity of China-U.S. cooperation in robotics.
C. Fierce global competition in the humanoid robot market.
D. The importance of EV technology in advancing AI robots.
30. How does the author demonstrate China’s dominance in humanoid robots?
A. By providing statistics. B. By defining a concept.
C. By quoting two experts. D. By giving an example.
31. In which aspect do humanoid robots need improvement according to Knuhtsen?
A. Their appearance design. B. Their stage performance.
C. Their practical capability. D. Their commercial availability.
D

Did you know that your stylish jacket or favorite jeans might once have been plastic bottles? This is the world of rPET, also known as recycled polyester (再生聚酯纤维). ____36____ As a result, a used water bottle can take on a new life as activewear or even high-fashion pieces.
____37____ First, plastic bottles are collected, sorted, and cleaned. After cleaning, they are cut, melted into liquid, and stretched into thin fibers. These fibers are then spun into yarn (纱线), which can be woven into different kinds of fabric. Finally, the fabric goes through finishing processes such as printing or coating to achieve the desired color, pattern, and performance.
Some people assume that clothing made from “waste” must be cheap or low-quality. It is true that plastic-based fabrics can be less breathable and may feel rough for people with sensitive skin. ____38____ According to a Textile (纺织品) Exchange report, the use of rPET grew by 20% between 2020 and 2021, and made up about 14% of all global polyester production in 2022. This growth comes from rising awareness of both its practical advantages and its environmental value.
In terms of performance, rPET is strong, durable, and quick-drying — qualities that make it ideal for sportswear. ____39____ Beyond performance, rPET supports the environment. Producing it uses 99% less water than producing traditional polyester, an important benefit for water-stressed regions involved in textile manufacturing. It also helps reduce waste. About 25 rPET bottles can be turned into the fibers for one jacket. ____40____
rPET is not a perfect solution to plastic pollution, but it is a meaningful step toward more sustainable fashion and a cleaner planet.
A. It is also lightweight and wrinkle-resistant.
B. However, market trends tell a different story.
C. The transformation happens through several steps.
D. This keeps millions of plastic bottles out of landfills each year.
E. Recycling rPET fabric back into new fabric can be challenging.
F. While it is safe to wear, it releases microplastics when it is washed.
G. Unlike traditional polyester made from petrol, rPET uses existing plastic.
