Amy Lin, aged 19, from China, became the first girl — and the youngest student — to ride a bicycle from her town to the top of a 4,000-metre mountain with no one else to help her. Amy set off from her home on June 1. She completed the 800-kilometre ride in just over 10 days. On June 12, she arrived at the mountain top. “Nobody expected I could make it,” she said. “But I was cheered by many travelers on the way.”
Amy faced many challenges along the way. A sudden snowstorm blocked her path. She hurt her leg and got a cold. At one point, she was almost hit by a falling rock. And one time, she ran out of food. But there were many bright things, too. For Amy, the trip was a chance to see the beauty of nature as few students ever do. “The sunrise on the mountain was really amazing,” she said. “The trip gave me many memories. They will stay with me for life.”
“I took on a big challenge and won,” Amy said. “I hope my effort will inspire others to challenge themselves.”
27.Where did Amy arrive on June 12?
A.In her town. B.At the mountain top. C.In a travel agency. D.At a hospital.
28.What did Amy find amazing during the journey?
A.The falling rock. B.The sunrise. C.The snowstorm. D.The cold.
29.Which of the following best describes Amy?
A.Strong-willed. B.Honest. C.Easy-going. D.Humorous.
五、任务型阅读
阅读下面短文,简略回答问题。
Cooperation (合作) comes from friendship, friendship comes from trust, and trust comes from kindness. It’s easy to tell that kindness is important. What is kindness then? Kindness is the quality of being friendly. If we give up our seats on the bus, help a classmate solve a math problem, or welcome a new member into a group activity, we are showing kindness. Actually, these acts are done without expectation of reward (回报).
We can conclude that helping others is helping ourselves because helping others benefits us in many different ways. It helps us know about ourselves. It develops our problem-solving skills. It also gives us the chance to be thankful.
We can never imagine the power of one simple act of kindness. It may change our day. And that day may change our week. That week may change the rest of the year—or even our whole life.
In short, we rise by lifting others.
Here are some teenagers’ acts of kindness. They are from different countries.
Linda is a middle school student from America. She sat next to a new student when she had lunch. She was pleased because she made the new student’s day.
Kayla lives in England with her parents. To raise money and protect wild animals, she held a singing competition. She was proud of it.
Wang Jun is a schoolboy from China. He opened the door for an old lady. He felt happy because he could help other people.
30.What is kindness according to the text?
31.Why can we conclude that helping others is helping ourselves?
32.Where did Linda sit when she had lunch?
33.How did Kayla raise money and protect wild animals?
34.What will you do to show your kindness to others? (Your answer should be different from the acts of kindness in the passage above.)
