五、阅读理解
(一)
When people hear the word 'explorer', they usually imagine the nineteenth century: men in heavy coats, maps, ships and long voyages into unknown lands. Few of them imagine a woman in her fifties, sitting in a laboratory in a city, looking at a computer screen.
Yet that is exactly what Dr Pan does. She is an explorer, but the place she explores has never been seen by human eyes. She studies the deepest parts of the ocean, using small robots that can survive the enormous pressure four kilometres below the surface.

Her work is not glamorous. A single trip can take three years of preparation, and the robots are lost as often as they are recovered. In her first five years, she admits, she found nothing of importance at all. 'People think exploration is full of exciting moments,' she says. 'Mostly it is full of waiting, and checking, and failing, and checking again.'
What keeps her going is a simple fact. More than eighty per cent of the ocean has never been mapped, and scientists believe that millions of species are still unknown. 'There are creatures down there that no one has ever seen,' she says. 'The nineteenth-century explorers had maps with empty spaces. I have them too.'
