In January,2020,snow began to fall
across the Apennines. For days it came down,
and the enormous drifts(雪堆)on the
mountain grew taller by the hour.
In spite of the bad weather,Matrone and
his wife decided to make the trip to the
mountain resort and have an overnight
getaway.Unfortunately,a small earthquake
broke out that night, which caused an
avalanche(雪崩).The avalanche gathered
speed and size, grabbing rocks and trees and

The snow and the weight of everything it

Each fall,the Lawrence Parks and
Recreation Department encourages kids to get
outdoors-and maybe get a little messy in the
process. The goal behind these hikes is also
the name of the annual program, cleverly titled
“No Child Left Inside'”.
Offered every other Wednesday between
September and November,the child-center
"Hiking Club",as it's alternative called,leads
a group of young science enthusiasts and
explorers on after-school adventures at Prairie
Park Nature Center and nearby places such as
Clinton Lake and the Baker Wetlands
Discovery Center.
“The idea,.”says Nature Interpretive
Supervisor Marty Birrell,"is to get kids
outside-and away from the TV and video
games for about an hour and a half on those
Wednesdays.When students in Lawrence's
public elementary schools are dismissed for
the day a little earlier."
"Kids are disconnected with the environ-
ment in a major kind of way because they're
spending all their time in school,"Birrell
says."Their time outside in the natural world
has been seriously limited, unless these kids
are in very, very rural environments.A global
study earlier this year showed that children
worldwide spend less time outdoors per day
than prisoners, which makes a lot of children
afraid of or unfamiliar with the natural world
around them.”
“In‘No Child Left Inside'classes,the
adventures go beyond textbooks,"Birrell says,
"to include hands-on activities such as fossil
hunting,butterfly tagging and birdwatching."
“There's also the fitness benefit,.”Birrell
says,"for kids who may not necessarily be
interested in team sports but are still in need

Thousands of brave souls have risked it
into the Rocky Mountains for the past decade,
to search for a treasure chest(财宝箱)filled
with gold,rubies,emeralds and diamonds.But
that adventure has finally come to an end.The
treasure has been found.
Forrest Fenn,the 89-year-old art collector
who created the treasure hunt, made the
announcement on his website."It was under a
starry sky,in the forested vegetation of the
Rocky Mountains and had not been moved
from the site where I hid it more than 10
years ago,"Fenn wrote in his announcement.
The treasure was found a few days ago
by a man who did not want to be named,
Fenn told The Santa Fe New Mexican. The
treasure, estimated to be worth over $1
million, was a way for Fenn to inspire people
to explore nature and give hope to people
affected by the Great Depression,he said.
Clues leading to the treasure's location were
included in a 24-line poem published in
Fenn's 2010 autobiography The Thrill of the
Chase.
Fenn roughly calculated that as many as
350,000 people from all over the world went
hunting for the treasure,crossing mountains
and streams,and enjoying the magnificent
scenery along the way. Some even quit their

Shortness of breath has many different
causes, and the treatment of it is specific for
each cause.36.
There are,however,
some following first aid steps you can use to
treat it,at least until the ambulance arrives or
you're able to get the victim to a hospital.
37
The more energy you spend,
the more oxygen you use and the more short
of breath you feel.Think about a good
workout at the gym.Exercise hard enough and
you will feel short of breath. The cure?Take a
break.
Let the victim sit, stand or lie where's
the most comfortable. There're lots of myths
about how some body positions supposedly
provide more airflow.Coaches regularly tell
players to hold their arms above their heads to
maximize chest expansion.Nursing staff
assume the“tripod position”is the best posi-
tion.38.
Use oxygen. This is a special case used
only for people with chronic(慢性)lung
problems. If the victim has oxygen available,
this is what it's for.39.
The victim
may have been told by his or her doctor that
too much oxygen for too long might cause
more problems.

They looked really cool.
In the afternoon,I asked Uncle Paul if I
could take a horse ride, and he said yes,as

to take a horse ride by myself anyway. So,my
dad and I put on our new cowboy hats, got on
our horses, and headed slowly towards the
mountains.“Don't be late for supper,,”Uncle
Paul cried,"and keep to the track so that you
don't get lost!”“OK!”my dad cried back.

said,"Don't worry,my son.I remember there is a river
