However, when circumstances are not only stressful but threaten us, the brain causes certain neck behaviors, which are protective, relieving and totally unique. I first observed the significance of neck behaviors early in my life when my grandmother was almost hit by a car in Miami Beach. At that instant, she immediately covered her neck with her hand. I was surprised that her hand went to her neck and not toward the car. At university, I saw this same behavior in anatomy (解剖学) classes as we examined animals. Both men and women would cover their necks as they looked down at the smelly animals for the first time. But I also noticed that men and women did it differently. Men tended to grab their necks harder, or even massage (按揉) their necks. Women tended to respond conversely. They would do it more elegantly, using their fingers to cover a very specific area. Aware that when people are troubled, scared, concerned, worried, or nervous, they cover or touch their necks, I never appreciated the potential use of this very telling behavior until I joined the FBI. In 1979, while working in Yuma, Arizona, my partner and I went to talk to the mother of a dangerous person. When we knocked on her door, she seemed tense but allowed us in. I asked her many questions about her son and she answered all of them without hesitation. However, when I inquired, “Is your son in the house?” during that interview, she put her hand to her neck and said, “No, he’s not.” Her body was speaking to me more honestly than her words. The words “son” and “house” together were a threat to her and she touched her neck in the same way my grandmother had done 14 years earlier. That early lesson taught me to pay attention to the neck because few people do. 4. What did the author’s grandmother do when a car was running toward her? A. She cried out loud. B. She placed her hand on her neck. C. She showed her hand to the driver. D. She was glued to the spot frightened. 5. What does the underlined word “conversely” in paragraph 3 probably mean? A. Directly. B. Properly. C. Emotionally. D. Oppositely. 6. What can we infer about the mother of the dangerous person? A. Her words showed hesitation. B. Her neck behavior gave her away. C. She was perfectly calm under great threat. D. She was completely honest with the author. C Medical scientists are already putting computer chips (芯片) directly into the brain to help people who have Parkinson’s disease, but in what other ways might computer technology be able to help us? Ray Kurzweil is the author of the successful book The Age of Intelligent Machines. He is also one of the world’s best computer research scientists. He is researching the possibilities. Kurzweil gets computers to recognize voices. An example of this is Ramona, the virtual hostess of Kurzweil’s website, created by the computer, who is able to understand what you say. Visitors to the website can have their own conversations with her. Ramona also dances and sings. Kurzweil uses this technology to help people with physical problems. One of his ideas is a “seeing machine”. This will be “like a friend that could describe what is going on around”, he explains. Blind people will use a sensor (传感器) which will probably be built into a pair of sunglasses. This machine will describe to the person everything it sees. Another idea, which is likely to help deaf people, is the “listening machine”. This invention will recognize millions of words and understand any speaker. It will also be able to translate what it hears into other languages, so even people without hearing problems are likely to be interested in using it. But it is not just about helping people with physical problems. Looking further into future, Kurzweil sees a time when we will be able to store what we hear, see and think in a computer. This technology probably won’t be ready for at least 50 years, but when it arrives, it means our minds will be able to live forever. 7. What can Ramona do? A. Talk with her visitors. B. Cure brain diseases. C. Help deaf people listen. D. Teach people to sing. 8. How can the “seeing machine” help blind people? A. By helping to treat their eyes. B. By translating tough languages. C. By helping them see the future. D. By describing to them what it sees. 9. What is mainly discussed in the fourth paragraph? A. The listening machine. B. The life of deaf people. C. The common hearing problems. D. The understanding between people. 10. What can be the best title for the text? A. Future Lifestyles B. Virtual Hostesses C. Intelligent Machines D. Great Computer Scientists Many people enjoy spending their vacations swimming, lying in the sun and staying at luxurious hotels. ____11____ They head for the country, to one of the numerous United States national parks, and take advantage of the fresh air and many outdoor activities that nature has to offer. “I’m a successful lawyer from San Francisco,” says Gavin Murphy. “____12____ I usually go to Yosemite National Park, where I sleep in a tent, hike, and enjoy the peace and quiet.” ____13____ They can go fishing in a cold stream, hiking on a winding nature trail, or biking along scenic paths. The gift given to me that I treasured most was a doll named Patsy. I met her in a gift shop when I was nine. On holding Patsy I immediately fell in love with her and couldn’t even bear to part from her. At that time, my mother noticed it and at Christmas, as I received the gift from her, I was surprised to find my dream doll in the box. From then on Patsy became my baby and I loved her dearly. A month later, I was on my way to the cinema when I glimpsed some lovely gifts in pretty boxes through the window of the gift shop. Seeing them reminded me that my mother’s birthday was a few months away. Wouldn’t it be nice, I thought, if I could give her something really special, just like the gift she gave me? I stepped inside and caught sight of a beautiful dress hung on the coat stand, which I was sure my mother would like. So I asked the saleswoman its price. The lady must have seen my disappointment when she told me how much it would cost. But she had a suggestion which immediately lifted my spirits. She took out a notebook from under the counter and wrote my name as well as the item I wanted to buy on it, and in return I paid her five cents from my six cents pocket money. It meant no candies that day but I didn’t care. At the age of nine, I made my very first installment (分期付款)and felt like a grown-up. From then on, every Saturday on my way to the cinema, I went to the shop and paid a few cents which the lady dutifully recorded on her notebook. The day before my mother’s birthday, I paid the last two cents. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ The special day finally came. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 丰润区2024—2025学年度第一学期期中考试 高二英语试卷 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节(共5小题;每小题1.5分,满分7.5分) 听下面5段对话。 1.What will the man probably do during his holiday? Great Computer Scientists 【答案】7. A 8. D 9. A 10. 根据第二段中的“An example of this is Ramona, the virtual hostess of Kurzweil’s website, created by the computer, who is able to understand what you say. Visitors to the website can have their own conversations with her.(这方面的一个例子是Ramona,Kurzweil网站上由计算机创造的虚拟主持人,她能够理解你说的话。网站的访问者可以各自和她进行对话)”可知,Ramona能够与访问者交谈。 【8题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“This will be “like a friend that could describe what is going on around”, he explains. Blind people will use a sensor (传感器) which will probably be built into a pair of sunglasses. This machine will describe to the person everything it sees.(他解释说,这就像“一个能够描述周围正在发生的事情的朋友”。盲人将使用一种可能内置在太阳镜中的传感器。这台机器将向这个人描述它看到的一切)”可知,“seeing machine”通过向盲人描述它所看到的一切来帮助他们。 【9题详解】 主旨大意题。根据第四段中的“Another idea, which is likely to help deaf people, is the “listening machine”. This invention will recognize millions of words and understand any speaker. It will also be able to translate what it hears into other languages, so even people without hearing problems are likely to be interested in using it.(另一个有望帮助聋人的构想是“聆听机器”。这项发明可以识别数百万个词汇,理解任何说话人的内容,还能将听到的内容翻译成其他语言,所以即使是没有听力障碍的人也可能有兴趣使用它)” 可知,本段核心介绍的是专为辅助听障群体设计的“聆听机器”。 【10题详解】 主旨大意题。文章开篇点明“Ray Kurzweil is the author of the successful book The Age of Intelligent Machines.(Ray Kurzweil是畅销书《智能机器时代》的作者)”,随后各段分别介绍了虚拟主持人、看机器、听机器以及未来意识存储技术,全文核心话题是Kurzweil研发的各类智能机器及其对人类生活的帮助。 Many people enjoy spending their vacations swimming, lying in the sun and staying at luxurious hotels. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 The day before my mother’s birthday, I paid the last two cents. As the lady wrapped the gift in brown paper, tied it with a piece of string, and carefully put it into a gift box, I attentively signed my name on the notebook, meaning that I had paid off all my debts. I thanked her and excitedly left the shop. “Be careful you don’t lose it,” she called after me. “I won’t!” I responded. Carrying the gift, I skipped away, singing happily to myself. The special day finally came. I placed the box on the table, hopping from one foot to the other, as my mom untied the knot and slowly peeled away the brown paper. My heart was racing. Then, as I bit into my bottom lip, the content was revealed. “Do you like it?” I asked excitedly. My mom didn’t say a word, but I got the answer from her face on which the same delighted smile as mine was worn when I received Patsy from her. 词汇激活 行为类 ①离开:leave/go away ②回答:respond/answer ③解开:untie/undo 情绪类 ①高兴地:happily/gladly/merrily ②激动地:excitedly/with excitement 【点睛】[高分句型1] As the lady wrapped the gift in brown paper, tied it with a piece of string, and carefully put it into a gift box, I attentively signed my name on the notebook, meaning that I had paid off all my debts.(运用由as引导的时间状语从句和现在分词作状语以及that引导的宾语从句) [高分句型2] My mom didn’t say a word, but I got the answer from her face on which the same delighted smile as mine was worn when I received Patsy from her.(运用由介词+关系代词which引导的限制性定语从句和when引导的时间状语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
