I used to be a night owl. I would stay up until 1:00 am watching videos or playing games, and then struggle to wake up at 7 am for school. I was always tired and grumpy in the morning. My grades started to suffer, and I knew I had to make a change.
I decided to become a morning person. It wasn’t easy at first. For the first week, I forced myself to go to bed at 10:30 pm and wake up at 6 am. I felt exhausted. But I kept going. I started to use my morning time to exercise. A 20-minute run helped me feel awake and energetic. I also used the extra time to review my notes before school. My grades began to improve.
After a month, I started to enjoy my mornings. The quiet hours before everyone else woke up became my favorite time of day. I could read, think, and plan without any distractions. I realized that I was not just changing my schedule — I was changing my whole attitude towards life.
Now, I can’t imagine going back to my old habits. I feel healthier, happier, and more productive. This change taught me that sometimes, the smallest adjustments can lead to the biggest improvements.

The earliest form of public transport was water transport. Boats and rafts (木筏) made of reeds (芦苇) and wood were used for transport in places such as Egypt and South America. In about 4000 BCE, boats with sails (帆) were used in Southwest Asia.
Early Chinese engineers built canals (运河) for carrying boats. The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal was started in 486 BCE and finished in 1293, linking Beijing and Hangzhou. The Canal du Midi, an important canal in Europe, was finished in 1681.
The railway age began in Britain with Richard Trevithick’s steam locomotive (蒸汽机车) in 1804. Soon after that, the first passenger railway was opened in 1825 in the north of England. At first, people were worried that they wouldn’t be able to breathe while travelling so fast — the first trains reached speeds of 24 kilometres per hour! Now, new trains on special railways are fast and comfortable! Long journeys are quick and smooth.
The first buses were introduced in France in 1826 by Stanislas Baudry. They were pulled by horses. They first appeared in London in 1829 and could carry about 22 passengers. Within a few years, they could carry more passengers. Road travel changed forever when the first car was built by Karl Benz in 1886. As car technology improved, the car gradually began to take over the roads. It looked different from modern cars. It was large and had three wheels! These developments show how technology makes life more convenient and colourful.
11. What was the earliest form of public transport according to the passage?
A. The canal. B. The railway. C. Water transport.
12. How long did it take to finish the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal?
A. 486 years. B. 1779 years. C. 1293 years.
13. Why were people worried about early trains at first?
A. Because they feared they couldn’t breathe at high speeds.
B. Because the trains were often late.
C. Because the trains were too slow.
14. What is the correct order of the following events according to the passage?
①The first car was built. ②The first passenger railway opened.
③Boats with sails were used in Southwest Asia. ④The first buses were introduced in France.
A. ②①④③ B. ④②③① C. ③②④①
15. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To introduce the most important types of transport.
B. To encourage people to use public transport more.
C. To tell the history and development of public transport.
C 12. B 13. A 14. C 15. C
第一段明确指出“The earliest form of public transport was water transport.”,这直接说明根据短文,最早的公共交通形式是水路运输。
第二段指出“The Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal was started in 486 BCE and finished in 1293…”,京杭大运河始建于公元前486年,竣工于公元1293年,跨越了公元前后两个历史时期。
第三段指出“At first, people were worried that they wouldn’t be able to breathe while travelling so fast—the first trains reached speeds of 24 kilometres per hour!”,这直接说明人们起初对早期火车感到担忧的原因是害怕高速行驶时无法呼吸。
因此,C选项“To tell the history and development of public transport”高度概括了文章的写作主旨。
D
When I was very young, people in our village made a living by growing fruit trees. My grandmother always took me to the orchard (果园) halfway up the hill (半山腰). At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to halfway up the hill. Even though they worked so hard, the fruit production was still low because there was a shortage of water.
One day, two young men led a group of workers to our village. They learned about our difficulties, and later, a canal project (灌溉工程) was built in my village.
“Who are they?” I asked. “They are good men from our government,” my grandma replied.
Then, I moved to another city for middle school. During one summer holiday, I came back to my hometown with my parents. When we arrived there, we were astonished because everything had changed. We saw the canal running through every orchard. And my grandma told us that after the canal project was completed, villagers didn’t have to go up and down the hill to carry water anymore. And more and more people started growing fruit trees, and the production increased a lot.
Thanks to the government’s canal project, the development of our countryside has improved. Nowadays, people work hard to make a living in big cities. However, we should not forget our hometown. That is where we are from.
16. How did people make a living in the village when the writer was young?
A. By planting vegetables. B. By growing fruit trees. C. By building canal projects.
17. The difficulty of the villagers was that ________.
A. they didn’t have money to buy water
B. there wasn’t enough water in the orchard
C. they couldn’t go to work in big cities
18. What does the underlined word “astonished” probably mean?
A. Worried. B. Surprised. C. Angry.
19. What is the correct order of the following events?
① A canal project was built in the village to solve the water problem.
② The countryside changed a lot because of the canal project.
③ The writer moved to another city for middle school.
④ The villagers had to go up and down the hill to carry water.
A. ④①③② B. ④③①② C. ③①②④
20. What message does the writer really want to express to us?
A. His village has hardly changed.
B. There are many good men in the village.
C. Our hometown means a lot to us.
B 17. B 18. B 19. A 20. C
第一段明确指出:“When I was very young, people in our village made a living by growing fruit trees.”,说明作者小时候村里人靠种植果树为生。
第一段中提到:“...the fruit production was still low because there was a shortage of water.”,以及村民需要从山脚挑水到半山腰,说明村民的困难是果园里缺水(there wasn’t enough water in the orchard)。
Worried(担心的)、Angry(生气的)均不符合语境。
文章最后一段明确指出:“However, we should not forget our hometown. That is where we are from.”,说明作者真正想表达的是家乡对我们意义重大(Our hometown means a lot to us)。

Ada Lovelace was born in England in 1815. When she was 13, she became paralyzed (瘫痪的) because of her serious measles (麻疹). She couldn’t walk for several years and needed tools to move around. But even while she was stuck in bed, young Ada didn’t stop learning. She loved studying, especially maths and science. Her teachers were amazed by her quick mind. One teacher said she would grow up to be a great mathematical thinker.
At 17, she met Charles Babbage, an inventor. He was building a huge machine called the “Analytical Engine (分析机)”. It was powered by steam (蒸汽). It could be programmed using special cards. To learn more about this machine, Ada visited Babbage often, asking many questions.
Ada imagined wonderful things. If given the right step-by-step orders (like a computer program), she thought the machine could write beautiful music and create poems, or even draw pictures! She worked hard and wrote the first set of these special instructions for the machine. That’s why many called her “the world’s first computer programmer”.
Ada always had amazing ideas. Long before airplanes appeared, she dreamed of building a flying machine powered by steam! She even drew pictures of her ideas when she was a young girl.
Sadly, Ada died young, at only 36. But her ideas about machines helping people were far ahead of her time. Today, people celebrate “Ada Lovelace Day” every October to remember this genius (天才的) woman who imagined the future of computers.

When I was very young, people in our village made a living by growing fruit trees. My grandmother always took me to the orchard (果园) halfway up the hill (半山腰). At that time, they had to carry water from the river at the foot of the hill to halfway up the hill.
