Many of us have entertained the idea of learning a foreign language. Here are a few examples, ranked in order of the number of hours it takes the average English speakers to master them from lowest to highest:
●Easiest (about 600 hours of study)
Want to have no trouble fitting in on the streets of Paris? You will make it after just 600 hours of study. The popular Latin languages — Italian, French, Spanish and Portuguese — require about 600 hours of study to achieve “general professional proficiency” in speaking and reading. They share many words with English, but differ significantly in meanings.
●German (750 hours)
Interested in reading Karl May’s “Wild West” series in its original language? You’ll need to spend750 hours mastering German first. With nouns that are masculine, feminine and neutral, verbs that are given various different forms and an extremely strict sentence arrangement, German may appear impossible to start with. But pronunciation and spelling is straightforward and once you learn the — admittedly many — rules, that’s it. German teachers used to joke that it takes you a year to say, “I’m travelling on the bus,” but once you’re on that bus, it’s plain sailing.
●Greek (1,100 hours)
Modern Greek is maybe the easiest language to learn that uses a different alphabet. Because Greek is also a language that’s contributed numerous words to English. Indeed, in 1957, Xenophon Zolotas, the then governor of the Bank of Greece, gave two speeches to the IMF that contained just Greek loanwords apart from the unavoidable basic English.
●Arabic (2,200 hours)
There’s an interesting story about a pharmaceutical (制药) company that advertised painkiller with three pictures. The left picture depicted a woman with a headache. The middle one showed her swallowing the pill and the right one had her smiling after the pain had disappeared. It worked everywhere except in the Arab world, which read it from right to left.
It takes the average native English speaker a whopping 2,200 hours to become proficient in Arabic. But who can resist a language with eleven words for love, five degrees of swearing and close to 100 words describing a camel?
21. Who is this passage intended for?
A. German speakers. B. Greek speakers. C. English speakers. D. Arabic speakers.
22. Which language makes a great contribution to English vocabulary?
A. Greek. B. German. C. Spanish. D. French.
23. What is special about Arabic?
A. The way it advertises. B. The habit of reading.
C. The time to master it. D. The expressions to say love.

Juan came from a very poor, single-parent home. Throughout the year, I noticed that Juan had an unusual ability to solve equations (方程), and to correlate abstract relationships between concepts. I was shocked when he approached me after school one day to tell me that he liked chemistry, but failed to think that he was intelligent enough to attend college. He asked me what he should do with his life.
I praised Juan’s talent and encouraged him not to waste it. His eyes lit up as I explained how scholarships, loans, and grants could make college possible, then invited him to join my advanced placement chemistry class next year. After promising to reconsider his future, Juan surprised me the next morning during my jog by appearing on my lawn, declaring cheerfully, “I’ve decided to take your AP class.”
Juan was my best student that year in advanced placement chemistry. His skills and abilities continued to grow, and he never tired of mind-bending calculations or homework. He literally blossomed before my eyes. As the end of the year approached, Juan thanked me for my interest in his life. I was profoundly moved when he told me that those fifteen or twenty minutes that we had talked the previous year had changed his life. He got an A on the advanced placement chemistry exam and he was awarded enough scholarship assistance that enabled him to attend the local university.
My experiences with Juan contributed to my decision to remain in the classroom. My love for my students and for the subject I teach has continued to grow over the years. I consider myself most fortunate to be a chemistry teacher, and to have been a part of so many young lives, hopes, and dreams.
24. What was Juan’s initial attitude towards his own academic abilities? ( )
A. He was confident. B. He was nervous.
C. He was uncaring. D. He was doubtful.
25. Which of the following best explains “literally blossomed before my eyes” underlined in paragraph 3? ( )
A. Became physically taller. B. Improved his social skills.
C. Showed amazing growth. D. Performed lab experiments.
26. Which of the following best describes the teacher? ( )
A. Helpful and considerate. B. Honest and calm.
C. Brave and intelligent. D. Selfless and determined.
27. What was the long-term effect of Juan’s story on the teacher? ( )
A. Her winning teaching awards. B. Her changing career.
C. Her focusing on poor students. D. Her staying in teaching.

There are so many expressions in American English that sound good but are not.
“Face the music” is a good example. When someone says they have to face the music, it does not mean they are going to a musical show or concert. To face the music means to accept the bad results of an action.
Imagine a friend asks you to take care of her beautiful red sports car. She gives you the keys and says, “Thanks so much for watching my car while I’m away. But please do not drive it. It is a very fast car and you are not on the insurance (保险).” But you do not listen. You want to show it to some friends and pretend (假装) the car is yours. So, you drive it around town one night. As bad luck would have it, you lose control of the car and drive it into a stop sign. The damage is serious. When your friend returns you must tell her what you have done and “face the music”. The “music” here is the result of your actions. It could be losing her friendship or paying for repairs to her sports car or both. Whatever the music is, you must face it.
There are other American expressions that mean the same as “face the music”.
To “take your medicine” means to accept the results from something bad you have done. And if someone says, “You made your bed. Now lie in it.” He means you created a bad situation and now you will experience the results, or as we say in American spoken English, you must deal with it!
“Pay the piper” also means the same as “face the music”. But, that expression has its own very interesting beginning. We will talk about that in the next Words and Their Stories.
28. What’s the main idea of this passage?
A. To invite a friend to go to a musical performance.
B. To tell people how to deal with a bad situation.
C. To give people a lesson on an action.
D. To introduce some expressions.
29. Which action belongs to “take your medicine”?
A. You broke the traffic rules and caused an accident.
B. You worked hard but failed in the exam.
C. You caught a cold and took some medicine.
D. You moved to a new city and lost touch with your old friends.
30. Which of the following expressions doesn’t have the same meaning with the others?
A. Face the music. B. Take your medicine. C. Make the bed. D. Pay the piper.
31. What may be talked about in the next programme?
A. Other words and their stories. B. The beginning of “pay the piper”.
C. The wider use of “face the music”. D. An example of “take your medicine”.
D
Going from middle school to high school can be difficult, as students are faced with new academic (学业的) and social challenges. Before the first day of high school, there are things every soon-to-be high school freshman and their families should know.
People who have a fixed mindset (思维倾向) believe that they are born to be great or weak. On the other hand, people who have a growth mindset believe that their greatness or weakness is because of their own actions. I totally agree that students should have a growth mindset. I don’t expect any student to move from just passing a subject to an A+. It’s going to take time and focused effort; just keep working on it.
Parents should prepare students to fight the battle “on the pillow” and “in the kitchen”. When I say “pillow” I mean sleep. Not having enough sleep can have some surprising effects on students, including improper behavior, anxiety, and poor grades. The second weapon is eating healthy and balanced meals. Studies show that students who eat nutritious meals and who exercise 60 minutes a day remain more attentive during the school day and experience improved academic achievement and grades. This last “secret” weapon is not to have over-scheduled time. Make sure students know how to set realistic plans and how to say no to tasks and activities that aren’t important to them.
A lot of students know each other from primary and middle school. They are in their “comfort zones”, feeling they have a sense of control over and expectation of their relationships. But come the first real day of high school, that will all change. The reason why I encourage high school freshmen to step out of their comfort zones, though often scary, is that comfort zones get boring and there are many kinds of people to get to know. Let’s encourage them to get involved, have fun, and play.
32. Which of the following represents a fixed mindset? ( )
A. I’m at the starting point of my potential.
B. My mother is not good at chemistry either.
C. I should start studying a little earlier next time.
D. It’s okay if I fail; at least I’ve learned something.
33. What might the author encourage parents to do? ( )
A. To prepare healthy meals for their kids.
B. To praise their kids when they do well in school.
C. To take their kids to visit their grandparents often.
D. To buy soft pillows for their kids to have a good rest.
34. What is the third weapon mainly about? ( )
A. Enjoying good health. B. Owning the ability to say no.
C. Balancing schoolwork and play. D. Developing time management skills.
35. What does the underlined word “that” in the last paragraph refer to? ( )
A. The fixed mindset they have.
B. The value of friendship.
C. The feeling that they have control over relationship.
D. The feeling that they become helpless.

How time flies! I couldn’t believe my first week of senior high school was coming to an end. Everything seemed fresh and new, and one experience in particular left a deep impression on me.
It was on Thursday that I had an unforgettable English class. Our teacher asked each of us to give a short speech in class. Thinking about speaking English in front of the whole class, I felt extremely nervous. I had never made a public speech before. My heart beat fast and I lowered my head, hoping the teacher would not call my name.
Unfortunately, my name was called. My face turned red instantly. I stood there awkwardly, too shy to say a word. Seeing my nervousness, my English teacher gave me a warm smile and encouraged me gently. She told me that every student would feel nervous on their first try and that courage was more important than perfection.
Her kind words calmed me down slowly. I took a deep breath and tried my best to finish my speech. My voice was trembling all the way, but I finally made it. The whole class gave me big applause. My deskmate Tom gave me a thumbs-up (竖起了大拇指). I felt proud of myself and gained much confidence.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Dear Tom,
I’m glad to receive your letter asking for my advice on how to improve English reading. I am writing to offer you some useful suggestions and here are some tips to help you.
As far as I am concerned, it would be wise to take the following action.
For one thing, I would like to suggest that you change your reading methods. Don’t read word by word. If I were you, I would grasp the main idea first instead of stopping for new words. I think it would be more beneficial if you could learn to guess word meanings from context.
For another, the most suitable way for you to raise accuracy is to accumulate vocabulary every day. You’d better memorize 20 words and review them regularly.
For some further improvement, it’s best to keep a 15-minute daily reading habit. I think you can make it if you follow the advice below.
I hope you will take my advice into consideration seriously. I hope you will find these proposals practical.
Yours,
Li Hua

第二节(满分25分)
Paragraph 1
The English class on Thursday was unforgettable.
After I finished my shaky speech and sat back down, warm applause burst out around me. I raised my head nervously and found my teacher smiling and nodding at me encouragingly. When class was over, she walked over and patted my shoulder softly, telling me I did far better than I thought. She said nervousness was totally normal for new students, and every small try would make me braver. Those gentle words stayed in my mind all afternoon, lighting a fire inside me to conquer my fear of speaking English in front of others. That was why I made up my mind to find more chances to practice.
Paragraph 2
After school that day, I decided to go to the English Club to further practise my English.
I wandered to the activity classroom slowly, too timid to step inside at first. Just as I hesitated at the door, Tom’s voice sounded beside me. He invited me to join his group, where we talked about our high school life freely in simple English. He patiently corrected my wrong expressions and shared useful memorizing methods for words. Every time I stumbled over sentences, he never laughed at me but waited patiently for me to finish. We agreed to meet at the English Club every Wednesday afternoon to practice oral English together. Walking home side by side, I realized that stepping out of my comfort zone brought me not only progress in study but also a precious friendship.
