Companies are unwilling to accept this for a variety of reasons because it's not what they're used to because they're afraid their employees will be lazy if they're not in the office, because because they just don't see the benefits in allowing their employees to work from home. But those companies that have accepted remote working and I mean, gladly accepted have seen IT for what IT is an excEllent opportunity to develop at my company. About fifty percent of our full time, permanent employees now work from home at least three days a week, and the other fifty percent work from home one day a week, with the exception of departments such as finance, H, R, and reception. And you know what that means? That means we can rent a smaller space and lower our monthly overhead costs. IT means our employees who have children no longer need to quit their jobs to take care of them. They can stay at home with their kids, look after them and at the same time respond to phone calls and emails. IT means that our employees are happy because they save money in time and avoid the stress of travelling to work, and we are happy because they are doing their job Better as a result of their flexibility. 应用文:
Recently, our class had a discussion on whether social media will make us closer or further apart. Opinions on the issue differ sharply.
Some students believe it brings us closer. With social media, we can chat with friends anytime and share our lives instantly, even when we are far apart. However, others argue that it drives us apart. They say people stare at their phones all day and ignore the people sitting right beside them, which weakens real communication.
In my opinion, technology itself is neither good nor bad. What matters is how we use it. If we use it wisely and keep a balance between online and real life, it will surely bring us closer.
读后续写:
As she read on, Lena felt her chest filled with something warm. Tears welled up as she realized the depth of her mother’s love. All those times she thought Mom was controlling her, Mom was actually expressing care in her own way. Ashamed of her outbreak, Lena decided to make up for it. She walked to her mother’s room, took a deep breath and knocked gently. Mom opened the door, her eyes showing a mix of surprise and hope. “Mom,” Lena said softly, “I’m sorry. I misunderstood your good intention.”
As she turned to leave her mother’s room, Lena was held tightly by her mother. “Sweetheart, I’m the one who should apologize,” Mom said in a choked voice. “I should have respected your privacy.” Lena shook her head, burying her face in Mom’s shoulder, knowing Mom was caring for her instead of harming her. They hugged each other tightly, the love between them shining through the tears. From that day on, Lena understood that love can be found in the most unexpected places—even in the notes hidden within her diary.

One day when I was 12, my mother gave me an order: I was to walk to the public library, and borrow at least one book for the summer. This was one more weapon for her to defeat my strange problem—inability to read.
In the library, I found my way into the Children’s Room. The cover of a book caught my eye. It presented a picture of a beagle (比格犬). I had recently had a beagle, the first and only animal companion I ever had as a child. But one morning, he was gone, given away to someone who had the space and the money to care for him. I never forgot my beagle.
There on the book’s cover was a beagle which looked identical to my dog. My eyes ran across the title, Amos, the Beagle with a Plan. Unknowingly, I had read the title. Without opening the book, I borrowed it from the library for the summer.
I started to read about Amos. I read very, very slowly with difficulty. Though pages were turned slowly, I got the main idea of the story about a dog who, like mine, had been separated from his family and who finally found his way back home. That dog was my dog, and I was the little boy in the book. My mother’s call drew me back to reality. I suddenly realized something: I had read a book, and I had loved reading that book. Everyone knew I could not read. But I had read it. Books could be incredibly wonderful and I was going to read them.
Years later, my mother was proud that her son had read thousands of books, was awarded a PhD in literature, and authored his own books, articles, poetry and fiction. The power of the words has held.
24. Why did the author’s mother order him to borrow a book?
A. Because the public library was near.
B. Because the author was a lazy student.
C. Because borrowing books was cheaper.
D. Because she wanted to cure his problem.
25. What can we learn about the author’s dog?
A. It was one of his favorite pets. B. It was secretly stolen from him.
C. Its name was Amos. D. It was adopted by someone else.
26. What was the function of the book the author borrowed from the library?
A. It improved his imagination.
B. It opened a door to his reading.
C. It proved his mother was wrong.
D. It reminded him of his childhood.
27. Which one could be the best title of the passage?
A. Mum’s Strict Order B. The Charm of a Book
C. Reunion with My Beagle D. My Passion for Reading.
C
Imagine a new smartphone product. It works the same way as any other smartphone, but when it is dropped, those cracks that appear after an annoying fall slowly fade away, and the phone magically repairs itself. A team of researchers led by professor Takuzo Aida have found a way to create self-repairing plastics that can be used in smartphones, cars and other products. But their new plastics won’t only be used to create unbreakable products, but also help fight against growing wastes harming the planet.
91% of plastics are non-recyclable and filling the Earth with wastes. The increasing plastics in landfills are a growing concern due to their negative environmental impact. In 2019 about only 9% of plastics were recycled globally, leading Japanese scientists to seek to find plastics that can start their own formation or self-repair.
The self-repairing plastics are made by adding a tiny amount of a specialized substance into ordinary plastics to hold the monomers (单体) together by hydrogen bonds (氢键). When the new plastics are broken down by heat, instead of being burnt to wastes, the hydrogen bonds mix and allow for the formation of specially shaped monomers to create a foundation for more monomers to layer on and rebuild themselves. The team found that their self-healing plastics were able to automatically repair themselves at room temperature over an hour to regain their durability.
The team’s work suggests great prospects for the future of plastics. “The technique could lead to the development of a made-to-last plastic that does not need to be recycled,” lead professor Aida said, “and can one day be used in products from smartphones to cars and even buildings.”
28. What is the typical feature of the new plastics?
A. They can repair themselves. B. They are costly to produce.
C. They are easy to recycle. D. They are beneficial to health.
29. What urged scientists to look for the new plastics?
A. Economic decline. B. Industrial problems.
C. Environmental concern. D. The lack of plastics.
30. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us?
A. The significance of the new plastics.
B. The positive effects of the new plastics.
C. The main functions of the new plastics.
D. The principle of how the new plastics work.
31. What is Takuzo Aida’s attitude towards the new plastics?
A. Doubtful. B. Critical. C. Approving. D. Objective.

Want to lose fat? There’s one method scientifically proven to work: eating a little less food than your body needs to fuel itself each day. Do that, and your body starts using its energy reserves—its stored fat—to make up the deficit. It sounds straightforward. You dutifully keep track of the calories in every meal to make sure your daily intake stays less than your fixed limit, but the number on your weight scale (秤) never changes at all. It’s frustrating and disheartening. But there’s good news: you’re not to blame.
Recent scientific findings suggest it’s almost impossible to count calories with any degree of accuracy, which explains why trying to lose weight by calorie counting is so hard. It’s not bad maths that trips most of us up, though. Generally, unless you diligently log every ingredient before you eat, humans just aren’t very good at recalling exactly what was on their plate, let alone the snacks they ate without thinking. Given all that, it’s no surprise that studies suggest the average person underestimate (低估) their daily consumption by around 30 percent (roughly 600-750 calories).
The very idea of working out calorie amounts is problematic. For instance, a 2023 study tested the outcomes of giving people a high-fibre diet, designed to feed their gut microbes (肠道菌群). The scientists found that the participants in the study lost a little bit of weight—without eating less or feeling hungry—because they were absorbing fewer calories from their food, with the reduced amount varying among individuals. “That means, depending on what you eat and how many microbes are thriving (旺盛繁殖) in your gut, some calories are used by you, while others feed the microbes. So each individual’s absorption will vary even though the same amount of food is consumed.” says Professor Rosa Brown.
If all this is starting to make you think that calorie monitoring might be off the menu, you’d be right.

In addition, many online services offer free goods, which are always worth taking advantage of.
Shop with social responsibility

Since Lena entered high school, the diary had become her only trusted friend. She told it everything that had happened at home or in school: the hurtful moments with her mother, the occasional unfair treatments received from her teachers and the bittersweet relationships with her classmates.
One rainy afternoon, Lena returned home, heartbroken, and went to look for her diary under the pillow. When she found it missing from its usual spot, panic set in.
“Did Mom take it?” she thought.
She stormed into her mother’s bedroom and found her reading the diary. Even worse, she saw a half-finished love poem on the bedside table. It was a present Lena prepared for her classmate!
“What are you doing on earth?” Lena yelled. “This is my privacy!”
“Calm down, sweetheart!” Mom said, trying to draw her close. “The roof leaked this afternoon. I was cleaning up the mess in your room when I found your diary under the wet pillow. I couldn’t help reading it while I was drying it.”
“Give it back to me, now!” Lena demanded. “I hate you! I’ll never forgive you!”
Mom returned the diary and apologized, “I just want to check and keep you safe!”
“Keep me safe?” Lena cut in. “You just want to control me!”
Lena grabbed the diary and ran back to her own room. Sitting in the darkness, Lena felt her heart sinking. She was very upset that her deepest secrets—especially her complaints about Mom—had been exposed.
However, when she opened the diary, she found something strange. On the page where she wrote “I hate you!”, she found a familiar handwriting: “Lena, I noticed you wrote this after our argument. I’m sorry for hurting you.—Mom” Curiously, Lena read through the diary and saw that every negative entry was accompanied by a note: encouragement after exam failures, comfort during moments of loneliness and apologies for misunderstandings.
