Pereira took the penguin home, 4 cleaned it and spent the next week nursing it back to health. He named it Dindim. Dindim is a Magellanic penguin, a species known 5 living in the seas of South America. In order to breed, they must return to Patagonia, 8,000 kilometers from Pereira’s home. Pereira patiently took Dindim back to the 6 and taught him how to swim again. Soon enough, it was time for Dindim to 7 life in the wild. Pereira watched Dindim swim away, 8 it would be the last time he saw him.
But the next June, Dindim returned. The two shared a tender beak-to-nose greeting, and Dindim stayed for a month, waddling around the 9 house. The time to leave arrived, and Pereira thought this 10 would be the last time he would see Dindim. 11 11 months later, the penguin with a long memory returned again.
It is a common belief among scientists that animals have short memories. So a couple of them put a 12 device on Dindim to see if it was indeed the same penguin that returned year after year. To their 13 , but not Pereira’s, Dindim returned, year after year, for more than a decade.

Passage 1
On a typical day, off the coast of a small Brazilian island, Joao Pereira de Souza was headed out 1 . He was depressed to find that an oil spill had polluted the waters. Staring out at the polluted waves, he 2 it was not a good day to fish. But walking the beach that day, he found a 3 penguin, covered in oil and starving.

Passage 2
I never truly understood China’s global influence until that summer in Nairobi. As a volunteer teacher, I had expected to 1 basic English to local children, but what I discovered was far more 2 .
On my first day at the community center, I noticed a group of children 3 around a small tablet, their faces lit with enthusiasm. The entire class was 4 by the vivid colors and dynamic characters of the cartoons. “We love these stories!” one girl told me in 5 English. I was astonished that Chinese cultural products had reached this 6 corner of the world.
The real 7 came during our traditional culture class. When I showed them Chinese paper-cutting, a boy named Joseph 8 shouted, “This looks just like the patterns on my grandmother’s dress!” His grandmother, as it turned out, 9 a Chinese skilled worker decades ago. This 10 between cultures left me speechless.
As weeks passed, I 11 more connections. The local hospital used Chinese-made medical equipment, and the new highway being built nearby was 12 by Chinese companies. I began to see China’s influence not as a distant concept, but as a living, breathing 13 in people’s daily lives.
On my last day, the children presented me with a thank-you card 14 with Chinese characters. Holding that card, I felt a profound sense of 15 in my country and its role in the world.

Weeks passed and my parents started to 8 the fact that I had a phone. They would say, “We have noticed that you never pay attention to us. It’s like you have your own little world now and we don’t communicate as much with your phone.”
I acted like they were wrong, but then I started to wonder if it was true that I was spending too much 9 on the phone.
A week later I tried going a whole day without a cell phone and it didn’t go that badly. I had so much 10 because I was actually spending time with my family and paying attention to them. From that day on, I had a totally different point of 11 towards cell phones.
Phones really take you away from the 12 of the world. I’m not saying that phones are 13 and not to use them, but you do have to 14 some time to spend with your family and not get 15 with your phone all day. My phone took away time from my homework and from my family. It also affected my grades.
