Most 10-year-olds spend their free time playing video games, but Ernesto Gael Hernandez, from Brownsville, Texas, is busy running his own 3D printing business and dreaming of buying his mom a house someday.
What began as a fun way to make custom keychains for classmates has quickly grown into a successful small business. Based in his home workshop, Ernesto creates various customized items, such as keychains, whistles, can openers and stress-relief toys for people with anxiety and ADHD (多动症).
This idea first took shape several months ago, when he told his mother that he wanted to buy a 3D printer. Instead of simply buying him a machine, she encouraged him to work and save for it himself. He saved $500 from chores to buy his first printer. It was then that he came up with the idea of making money from 3D printing, thus launching his brand, Prestige 3D Labs. He even taught himself to create custom designs by watching online tutorials (教程).
Business has grown fast. He has earned around $1,500 in profit so far and demand became so strong that he partnered with a local Brownsville clothing store called Jungle to help sell his creations. Now, three printers run regularly to keep up with orders coming in.
Despite business success, Ernesto sticks to a tight schedule to balance his business, schoolwork and football training. With printing tasks arranged early in the morning, during school days and before practice, he succeeds in running his business steadily.
For Ernesto’s mother, Samantha Quezada, the business has become more than just a way for her son to earn money. “It’s a little bit stressful, but honestly I enjoy we get to do it together,” Quezada said. “It is part of our quality time.” But for Ernesto, his motivation is surprisingly heartfelt. “I just like doing it because I want to invest in a house for my mom when I grow older,” Ernesto said.
4. What does Ernesto’s 3D printing business mainly do?
A. It prints keychains for classmates. B. It produces daily household items.
C. It creates a range of mood-lifting products. D. It tailors various products to customers’ needs.
5. What inspired Ernesto to start his business?
A. His dream of buying a house for his mother.
B. His experience of saving money to buy the printer.
C. The decision to make keychains for his classmates.
D. The high profit from selling all kinds of small products.
6. Which of the following can best describe Ernesto?
A. Ambitious and organized. B. Caring and generous.
C. Hard-working and humorous. D. Adventurous and creative.
7. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Hard Work Creates a Teen’s Success B. Business Builds Close Family Bonds
C. 3D Skills Open a Whole New World D. 3D Printing Shapes a Teen’s Dream House
D 5. B 6. A 7. D

根据第三段“He saved $500 from chores to buy his first printer. It was then that he came up with the idea of making money from 3D printing, thus launching his brand, Prestige 3D Labs. (他通过做家务攒下500美元买了第一台打印机。就在那时,他萌生了通过3D打印赚钱的想法,从而推出了他的品牌Prestige 3D Labs)”可知,激发他创业的直接原因是他通过自己攒钱买打印机的经历。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“Despite business success, Ernesto sticks to a tight schedule to balance his business, schoolwork and football training. With printing tasks arranged early in the morning, during school days and before practice, he succeeds in running his business steadily. (尽管生意成功,Ernesto仍坚持严格的日程安排,以平衡他的生意、学业和足球训练。通过在清晨、上学日和训练前安排打印任务,他成功地稳定经营着自己的生意)”可知,他勤奋且有条理;再根据最后一段““I just like doing it because I want to invest in a house for my mom when I grow older,” Ernesto said. (Ernesto说:“我只是喜欢做这件事,因为我想长大后给妈妈投资买一套房子。”)”可知,他非常有抱负。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Most 10-year-olds spend their free time playing video games, but Ernesto Gael Hernandez, from Brownsville, Texas, is busy running his own 3D printing business and dreaming of buying his mom a house someday. (大多数10岁的孩子都把空闲时间花在玩电子游戏上,但来自德克萨斯州布朗斯维尔的Ernesto Gael Hernandez正忙着经营自己的3D打印生意,并梦想有一天给妈妈买一套房子)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要讲述Ernesto利用3D打印技术创业,并努力实现为母亲买房的梦想,因此“3D打印塑造青少年梦想中的房子”最能概括全文,适合作为文章标题。

Banff National Park is Canada’s firstborn national park and was recognized in 1885. Located in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Banff includes 6,641 square kilometers of glaciers and ice fields, thick forests, and alpine (高山的) scenery. The Icefields Park-way spreads from Lake Louise, connecting to Jasper National Park in the north. Provincial forests and Yoho National Park are neighbors to the west while Kootenay National Park is situated to the south. The main commercial center of the park is the town of Banff, in the Bow River valley.
The Canadian Pacific Railway was contributory in Banff’s early years, building the Banff Springs Hotel and Chateau Lake Louise hotel in the park and attracting tourists through widespread advertising. In the early 20th century, roads were built in Banff, at times by prisoners of World War I, and through Great Depression-era public works projects. As Banff has over three million visitors annually, the health of its ecology has been endangered. In the mid-1990s, Parks Canada launched a two-year study to preserve ecological integrity.
Banff National Park has a subarctic climate with three ecoregions. The forests feature pine trees at lower heights and Engelmann spruce at higher ones below the tree line, above which are chiefly rocks and ice. Mammal species such as the grizzly bear, cougar, wolverine, moose and bighorn sheep are found along with hundreds of bird species. Reptiles (爬行动物) are also found but only a restricted number of species have been recorded.
The mountains were formed from sedimentary rocks (沉积岩) which were pushed east over newer rock formations, between 80 and 55 million years ago. Over the previous few million years, glaciers have at times covered most of the park, but today are found only on the mountainsides though they include the Columbia Icefield, the largest continuous glacial mass in the Rockies. Being washed and crashed by water and ice has molded the mountains into their current appearance.
8. What can we infer about Banff National Park?
A. It was built mainly by prisoners.
B. It is connected to three provincial parks.
C. It is the oldest national park in Canada.
D. It failed to meet visitors’ commercial needs.
9. What was a contribution of the Canadian Pacific Railway?
A. Building roads in Banff. B. Preserving the ecology of Banff.
C. Constructing hotels in Banff. D. Providing multiple railways to Banff.
10. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The limited knowledge of reptiles. B. The biodiversity of Banff.
C. The region’s severe living conditions. D. The complex climate system of Banff.
11. What does the underlined word “molded” most probably mean?
A. Stuck. B. Broken. C. Followed. D. Shaped.
C 9. C 10. B 11. D

根据第二段“The Canadian Pacific Railway was contributory in Banff’s early years, building the Banff Springs Hotel and Chateau Lake Louise hotel in the park and attracting tourists through widespread advertising. (加拿大太平洋铁路公司在班夫早期发展中贡献突出,在公园内修建了班夫温泉酒店和露易丝湖城堡酒店,并通过广泛宣传吸引游客)”可知,该铁路公司在班夫修建了酒店。故选C项。
【10题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第三段“Banff National Park has a subarctic climate with three ecoregions.
根据第四段“Being washed and crashed by water and ice has molded the mountains into their current appearance. (被水和冰的冲刷与侵蚀使得这些山脉molded如今的样貌)”可知,被水和冰冲刷撞击使山脉形成现在的外观,说明molded意为“塑造、使成形”,与shaped意思相近。故选D项。

When we talk more broadly of body language, rather than good postures, we can actually see the effects it has on relationships right throughout the animal kingdom. In particular, body language is used to express power through expansive (扩张的) postures.
You might know about Amy Cuddy’s famous Ted Talk and her incredible insights on how posture changes our thoughts. Cuddy and her team study body language, particularly what they call “high-power” and “low-power” poses.
“High-power” poses refer to the act of taking a posture of confidence, which can help you feel more self-confident, even after only two minutes. Typical high-power poses are about opening up. You stretch and expand your body to take up as much space as possible. For example, bosses are doing high-power poses when they lean back in their chairs, put their hands behind their heads, and kick their feet up onto their desks. Meanwhile, people take low-power positions when they’re feeling helpless or defeated. They close up, arms around themselves, taking up the smallest space.
Some even more recent studies took this even further: A study by researchers from Columbia and Harvard Universities showed that body language symbolizing power can actually affect our decision-making, unintentionally. The researchers measured the desire for risk of participants in either expansive, powerful poses or constricted (收缩的) poses. Those in the powerful poses not only felt more powerful and in control, but were 45% more likely to take risky actions.
“This isn’t about what your body language is communicating to others; it’s about what your body language is communicating to you. Your body language is changing your mind, which changes your behavior, which changes your outcomes,” said Cuddy.
So if you want to take advantage of the benefits of these poses to live a healthier and happier life, where should you start?
12. Which is probably a low-power pose according to the text?
A. Sitting with hands crossed in the lap.
B. Arms raised in a “V” above the head.
C. Standing with your legs open.
D. Sitting with your arms spreading out on the chair.
13. What can we say about people in the expansive poses?
A. They are hesitant. B. They are very shy.
C. They feel out of control. D. They feel more confident.
14. What is the text mainly about?
A. The posture of confidence. B. Cuddy’s research on behavior.
C. The surprising power of body language. D. The research about decision-making.
15. What might be talked about in the following paragraph?
A. How to correct bad habits. B. How to improve your body language.
C. How posture affects your health. D. Why good posture matters for employees.
A 13. D 14. C 15. B
根据第三段“Meanwhile, people take low-power positions when they’re feeling helpless or defeated. They close up, arms around themselves, taking up the smallest space.(与此同时,当人们感到无助或被打败时,他们会采取低权力姿势。他们紧闭身体,双臂紧贴身体,占据最小的空间)”可推断,手交叉放在腿上坐着,缩小自己占用的空间,属于“低权利”姿势。故选A。
根据第三段““High-power” poses refer to the act of taking a posture of confidence, which can help you feel more self-confident, even after only two minutes. (“强势”姿势指的是摆出一种自信的姿势,这种姿势即使在两分钟后也能让你感觉更自信)”及第四段“The researchers measured the desire for risk of participants in either expansive, powerful poses or constricted (收缩的) poses. Those in the powerful poses not only felt more powerful and in control, but were 45% more likely to take risky actions.(研究人员测量了参与者在舒展的、有力的姿势和收缩的姿势中对风险的渴望。
根据最后一段“So if you want to take advantage of the benefits of these poses to live a healthier and happier life, where should you start?(所以,如果你想利用这些姿势的好处,过上更健康、更快乐的生活,你应该从哪里开始呢?)”
You’ve just got your final exam results, but they’re not as good as you expected. What’s even worse, your best friends have achieved excellent grades, making you extremely jealous (忌妒的). Don’t worry too much. ____16____
Be glad for them. First of all, make sure you begin on the right foot by congratulating them on their excellent performance. To be honest, it can be tough when you are full of jealousy. However, your best friend has made efforts for it and they really deserve to be praised. Don’t dislike them just because of their achievements. ____17____
Be brave enough to face your feelings. That means being glad for your best friend doesn’t force you to hold back your true feelings. ____18____ First, ask yourself where this feeling of jealousy comes from. Also, think about why your best friend got a higher grade than you. Figuring out the root cause of these feelings is a key first step in getting over your jealousy.
Use it as motivation (动力). Jealousy isn’t necessarily bad. Being jealous of your friend’s good grades shows that you care about your own studies. In such a case, the best way is to turn this jealousy into motivation to do better. Try hard to improve your grades. Find out your mistakes and learn from them. Don’t just waste your energy being sad. ____19____
____20____ The fact that your best friend got a higher mark than you doesn’t mean you’re not good enough. We really should stop seeing other people’s achievements as the standard for our own value. Life isn’t like a race where everyone is competing against each other. Instead, think about your own advantages. Value yourself more. Before long, your jealous feelings will go away.
A. Try not to compare yourself to others.
B. Try to be honest with how you’re feeling.
C. While grades are important, they aren’t everything.
D. Allow yourself to feel really happy for your friend’s successes.
E. Instead, make efforts to set new goals and create better study habits.
F. However, envy can quickly become a problem for your friendship.

Cold December wind passed right through my worn coat. I might have wished to be at home, but those days it wasn’t much warmer there than it was standing at the bus stop. Mama had written a letter to the electric company explaining that we were late paying our bill because my sister was ill and Daddy had been laid off, but the power was cut off anyway. That’s why we were on our way into town to pay the bill in person.
I sat close to Buddy Earl for warmth on the bus when it finally showed up. The walk to the electric company office from the bus stop was only a couple of blocks, but it was a relief to get inside.
After settling the bill Mama brought us over to Rich’s department store. There was Santa in a big wooden chair. “You two go talk to him,” she said. “Just don’t expect to get all you ask for.” Buddy Earl and I joined the line of children waiting, and Mama sat on a bench nearby.
Then Santa started talking with us and asked us what we wanted. Santa reached in his pocket, pulled out a notepad and scribbled something with a pencil. “Is your mother with you two?” he asked. I pointed to the bench. “That’s our mama over there. She’s waiting for us to finish.” Santa lifted Buddy Earl off his knee. “Could you ask her to come and talk to me?” he said.
Later, Mama and Santa talked for a few minutes. Santa took a couple more notes. Then Mama brought us home. We didn’t dare ask about their private conversation. Christmas morning Mama and Daddy gathered us around our tree to give thanks for all we had. There were no toys from Santa under the tree. No presents at all, really. But that was okay, especially since we had electricity again. I felt pretty good as I took my seat at the kitchen table.
Paragraph 1:
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph2:
Mama and Daddy looked at each other, and she unpacked the food from the box.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1:
Suddenly, there was a knock at the door. Daddy opened it to a man I’d never seen before. He was holding a big box. “this is for you and your family,” he said, “Merry Christmas!” The man was gone before Daddy even had a chance to invite him in. Daddy put the box on the table and opened it up. Inside was an envelope and a lot of food! Daddy read the letter from the envelope. “May you be happy!”
Paragraph 2:
Mama and Daddy looked at each other, and she unpacked the food from the box. The first thing was a big can of pork and beans. Buddy Earl’s eyes went wide. “An angel came to our door today,” Mama said as she pulled out a big box of Sugar Crisp. With gratitude, we had a happy Christmas. Not long after the festival, Daddy was called back to work. My sister recovered from her illness. I even received a new coat, which was thicker than my old one and kept me warm.
如:had a chance , went wide , With gratitude, recovered from 等词语。Inside was an envelope and a lot of food! I even received a new coat, which was thicker than my old one and kept me warm.

G. We’ve come up with some ways to help you deal with this situation.
