I went straight to the police chief (警长) for help after I found the white elephant missing. The police station was busy, but I was led into the chief’s quiet office.
“I have lost a white elephant,” I said anxiously (焦急地).
He stood up quickly. “A white elephant! How great! Tell me everything.”
“The elephant belongs to the King of Siam (暹罗). It is a priceless gift. I must get it back as soon as possible.”
“Do not worry,” the chief replied calmly. “I shall call every detective in the city at once. They will look for the animal day and night. We never fail in such cases.”
“I can pay all the costs for the whole search,” I told him sincerely.
The chief rang a bell at once. Several detectives hurried into the room. He gave clear orders right away. Every man looked serious and fully ready for the difficult task.
The next morning, I got many different reports. One detective wrote: I saw a large animal walking beside the river last night. Another said: The elephant may have gone into the quiet countryside far away.
Day after day, more reports arrived one after another. Every time I visited the police station, the chief smiled confidently. “We are making great progress. Trust our men completely.”
Weeks slowly passed. I spent thousands of dollars on the search. Still there was no sign of the huge elephant. I became deeply worried and upset, checking my phone every hour for news.
At last, a message came unexpectedly. They found the elephant in a dark street. When I arrived, my heart sank. The white elephant had been dead for several days. All the busy work, endless reports and high costs turned out to be useless. It was easy to see that the police only pretended (假装) to work hard in front of visitors.

You may study differently from your friends, but your study habits are not wrong!
Kelly and Maria are best friends with a lot in common. They love doing things together, such as going to the movies and concerts, shopping, or just sitting at a small cafe. Since they take a lot of the same school subjects, they would love to study together, but they find this impossible. Their study habits are so completely different that they can’t be in the same room when they are studying!
Kelly would like to study in a clean, open space. Maria works best with books, papers and other things around her. Kelly likes to study in a totally tranquil room, but Maria loves to play music or even have the TV on. Kelly can sit for hours without moving, and often gets all her homework done in one sitting. Maria, however, is always getting around, and says that she thinks best when she’s on the move.
You might be asking yourself: which way of studying gets better results? Many people think that a quiet, tidy environment is the way to go, ▲ . Some studies have even shown that outside noise and untidiness help some people focus their attention, because it makes them form a “wall” in their mind around what they are doing and improves their focus.
So, if you’re used to studying at a busy shopping centre, don’t worry about it. If you work in total silence, that’s OK too. According to Kelly’s and Maria’s study habits, we can know that the best way to study is the way that works for you. In their very different ways, both of them do well in school, and both finish their work on time as well.
17.Why are Kelly and Maria mentioned as an example in the text?
A.To discuss two different study habits.
B.To compare the differences in their hobbies.
C.To show the importance of a good study habit.
D.To show the writer’s worry about their friendship.
18.What may the word “tranquil” mean in the text?
A.Noisy. B.Clean. C.Quiet. D.Dirty.
19.Which of the following is the best to fill in ▲ ?
A.but that is not always true
B.and they have difficulty in their studies
C.and it can be true for most of them
D.but nobody does research on this question
20.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Both study habits mentioned in the text can help students improve their studies.
B.Students who like to study in silence will be more successful.
C.Only a small number of students can study well in a noisy situation.
D.Friends with different study habits can do better by studying together.

Deep in wet forests all over the world, some rare small plants live underground. Sometimes they grow flowers above the ground. These bright little flowers earn them the name “fairy lanterns”.
Even though they have a magical name, these plants of the Thismia group are like “monsters (怪物)” in biology. They cannot make their own food because they have no green chlorophyll (叶绿素). Instead, they get food from fungi (真菌) that live underground.
Scientists had already known about 120 kinds of fairy lanterns. But now, a new kind has been found in Malaysia. It is called Thismia selangorensis. However, people have found fewer than 20 of these plants so far, so this plant may be at great risk of disappearing.
In November 2023, Gim Siew Tan, a nature expert, first saw the new plant. It grew near the roots of a tree by a river in a popular picnic area. The plant was about 4 inches tall. Its flowers grew out of the soil and looked like peach-coloured umbrellas.
Tan took photos and posted them on the website for citizen scientists. These photos were noticed by expert Siti-Munirah Mat Yunoh. She quickly realized that this was a new, unknown species.
Later, the research team looked for more of these plants and found fewer than 20. People can recognize this species by its special flowers, coral-shaped roots, and other features. The team named it Thismia selangorensis to honour Selangor, the state where it was found.
Siti-Munirah said, “This discovery shows us that important scientific finds do not only happen in faraway rain forests. They can also be found in common places where many people often go.”

14.文章第4段“I must get it back as soon as possible.”以及第6段“I can pay all the costs for the whole search”表明作者愿意承担全部搜寻费用,目的是尽快找回白象。
15.文章第9段“We are making great progress. Trust our men completely.”与最后一段“The white elephant had been dead for several days. All the busy work, endless reports and high costs turned out to be useless. 16.结合全文中警方持续提交搜寻报告却无实际成效,所有工作最终都被证实是表面功夫的内容,表明故事要传达的核心教训是报告并不总是意味着进展。

【答案】17.A 18.C 19.A 20.A
【导语】本文通过对比Kelly和Maria不同的学习习惯,探讨了学习环境对效率的影响,核心结论是适合自己的学习方式才是最好的,行文探讨了不同习惯的有效性。

18.根据第三段“Kelly likes to study in a totally tranquil room, but Maria loves to play music or even have the TV on.”可知,but表转折,Maria喜欢开音乐或者开电视,由此推断Kelly喜欢在完全安静的房间学习,所以单词“tranquil”意为“quiet(安静的)”。
19.根据第四段“Many people think that a quiet, tidy environment is the way to go”以及“Some studies have even shown that outside noise and untidiness help some people focus their attention”可知,很多人认为安静整洁的环境才适合学习,但并不总是这样,吵闹的环境也可以帮助一些人集中注意力。

五、阅读表达(本大题共5小题,每小题2分,共10分)
