Beneath the bright lights of campus stages, Zhang Xueling, an Indonesian student at South China University of Technology, has truly turned into an excellent storyteller of Chinese culture.
Born in Indonesia to a family with Fujian roots, she received a poetic Chinese name. At five, her mother signed her up for Chinese dance and Kong fu. Back then, she failed to focus on the beauty behind them. To her young mind, it felt like a heavy pressure rather than a joy — simply a tiring and boring task. She almost gave up. However, her respect for her family’s wish pushed her forward.
Then, on a trip to ancient Luoyang, an unforgettable moment arrived. She was shocked to see crowds of young people walking through the streets in attractive Hanfu. The atmosphere was so powerful that it awakened her curiosity about Chinese culture. In that flash, she understood: tradition is not dead — it remains alive and breathing.
“How amazing it would be to wear Hanfu!”
Dressed in Tang-style Hanfu with full classical makeup, she walked through Yingtian Gate and felt as if she had stepped back a thousand years. It was magical: Chinese culture was not simply for museums, but for living.
She entered the 5th “Stories of China Retold in English” competition, naming her speech “Hanfu, a Walking History Book.” She didn’t just speak; she also taught herself the “Old Tales of Luoyang” dance. Backstage, her heart beat fast. “What if I make a mistake on stage?” But the moment she began to move, all her worry disappeared. Her graceful moves, paired with the beautiful Hanfu, completely won the crowd and the judges.
With the Grand Prize and the title “Star of the Stage”, Zhang Xueling proved that with true passion, anyone can bridge cultures and shine.
24. What can we learn about Zhang Xueling in her childhood?
A. She learned Kong fu for fun. B. She was interested in poems.
C. She met Chinese culture early. D. She had a gift for Chinese dance.
25. What awakened Zhang Xueling’s curiosity in Luoyang?
A. The magical works of museums. B. The atmosphere of Hanfu lovers.
C. The long history of Yingtian Gate. D. The classical makeup of local girls.
26. What made Zhang Xueling win the competition?
A. Her family’s support and wish. B. Her experience of wearing Hanfu.
C. Her nice speech and graceful dance. D. Her deep love for ancient Luoyang.
27. What can be concluded from Zhang Xueling’s story?
A. A positive mind leads to success. B. Traditional culture should be updated.
C. True passion connects different cultures. D. Mistakes can be reduced through practice.

Teenage life is quite dramatic but that doesn’t mean you cannot enjoy your life in these years. Even with your daily troubles, your life is not very hard if you know how to deal with them.
I know exactly how you feel. Teenage life can be hard. You are not a kid anymore, because you are smart enough to consider your surroundings. However, you are still not an adult because there are still lots of experiences that you need to have and lessons that you need to learn from these experiences. Above all, the hormonal (荷尔蒙的) imbalance in your body can really mess you up. I have been there. I was in it for six years exploring what life is about!
As a teenager, I had a major problem completing my routine tasks on time. And at that time, all that I needed to do was to finish my homework, study for the upcoming tests and clean my room. Now, I have much more things to do: cooking, cleaning and working while keeping a balance between all my relationships related to work, family and friends. That really is a lot of work. So, I will just give you one golden tip, “Never leave that till tomorrow which you can do today.”
Life becomes much easier now because I finish all my work on time and I have enough time to let my hair down. Half the problems of a teenager appear because we hate doing things. We’d rather go and have fun than sit down and take on our responsibilities. That is why you have so much trouble in your life; your parents won’t let you go out with friends because you haven’t cleaned your room or your teacher is always criticizing you because you haven’t finished your homework.
28. Who are the target readers of this passage?
A. Parents B. Scientists C. Teachers D. Teenagers.
29. What plays a key role in making teenage life hard according to the writer?
A. The lack of life experience. B. The physical changes.
C. The failure of concentration. D. The unfamiliar surroundings.
30. How did the writer feel about her teenage life?
A. It was enjoyable. B. It was simple. C. It was boring. D. It was difficult.
31. What does the writer advise teenagers to do?

If you want to become a fluent English speaker, you should take some advice: there are four skills in learning English. They are listening, speaking, reading and writing. The most important thing you must remember is that if you want to improve your speaking and writing skills, you should first gain the skills of reading and listening.
Read as much as you can. But your reading must be active. It means that you must think about the meaning of the sentences, the meaning of the unfamiliar words, etc.
There is no need for you to pay much attention to grammar or try to understand all the unfamiliar words you come across, but the fact you see them for the first time and recognize them whenever you see them, for example in other passages or books, is enough. It would be better to prepare yourself a notebook so you can write down the important words or sentences in it.
As for listening, there are two choices: besides reading, you can listen every day for about 30 minutes. You can only pay attention to your reading and become skillful at your reading, then you can catch up on your listening. Since you have lots of inputs (输入) in your mind, you can easily guess what the speaker is going to say. This never means that you should not practice listening.
For listening, you can listen to cartoons or some movies that are specially made for children. Their languages are easy. Or if you are good at listening, you can listen to VOA or BBC programs every day. Again the thing to remember is being active in listening and preferably taking some notes. If you follow these pieces of advice, your speaking and writing will improve automatically, and you can be sure that with a little effort they will become perfect.
32. According to the author, which should you improve first among the four skills?
A. Reading and listening. B. Reading and writing.
C. Writing and speaking. D. Speaking and listening.
33. To improve your reading, when you read, you should ________.
A. look up all the new words in the dictionary.
B. think about what you are reading actively.
C. spend more time studying grammar.
D. copy as many words and sentences as possible.
34. What does the underlined words “come across” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Meet by accident. B. Wind up. C. Lose on purpose. D. Look for.
35. Which of the following may the author agree with?
A. Everyone should listen to VOA or BBC programs every day.
B. You needn’t practice listening if you keep in reading every day.
C. Being good at reading is helpful in improving your listening.
D. You should take notes of whatever you are hearing.
第二节(共5小题,每小题2.5分,共12.5分)
The Power of a Personal Journal
Keeping a daily journal is one of the most powerful and beneficial habits you can develop. It is more than just a record of your life; it is a tool for self-expression, reflection, and personal growth. 36 For many successful writers and thinkers, it’s their first step into daily writing discipline.
A key benefit of keeping a journal is better self-understanding. Writing down your thoughts and feelings forces you to clarify them. 37 This process gives you new insights into your values and life goals, creating a space for honest self-conversation.
38 The more you write, the better you express ideas clearly. You can experiment with new vocabulary, different sentence structures, and various writing styles without the pressure of being graded. It’s a private playground for your words.
To get started, you don’t need a fancy notebook or special pens. 39 Consistency matters most — spend 10-15 minutes daily. You can write about your day, things you’re grateful for, or challenges you face. You can also focus on daily observations like the weather.
The benefits of this simple practice extend far beyond the page. It can reduce stress, spark creativity, and help you solve problems more effectively. 40 You might be surprised by what you discover.
A. So, pick up a pen and start writing.
B. Keeping a journal also improves writing skills.
C. You can also share your journals with your friends for feedback.
D. Putting experiences into words can make them easier to understand.
E. It is important to write your journal entry at the same time every day.
F. It allows you to look within, to recall the past, and to plan for the future.
G. A simple notebook or even a document on your computer will work perfectly.

Polly Goodman, 82-year-old, was a rich old woman. Her husband was a businessman and left her a large fortune after his death, so she had no problems supporting herself. The only problem was that her son who was a doctor busy with his work and seldom had time to visit her, leaving her living lonely.
One day, Polly was walking along the beach, like she did every evening near her seaside house, when she noticed a young boy and his little sister playing there. As she was passing by them, she heard their mother calling out to them. “Corey! Daisy! Be careful! Stay away from the water!”
Polly noticed their mother resting on a bench, appearing sick and tired. The dark circles under her eyes were quite obvious, and she coughed frequently. Polly always had a desire to have a chat with someone. So she walked carefully towards the mother with a kind smile on her face.
“Hi, I’m Polly. I live by the beach.” Polly said.
The mother looked up at Polly, feeling a little surprised. The mother told Polly she was Lydia and had worked as a waitress. Lydia further said that she and her children had only recently moved to that location because her children had always wanted to see the ocean. Then Lydia stopped to cough heavily. After she calmed down, it seemed she wanted to say something, but stopped as if there was something difficult to tell. Polly did not follow up, saying goodbye and left.
When Polly went to the beach the next day, she saw the kids again, but this time their mother wasn’t with them. She observed them playing by themselves until late in the evening before heading home. The third day came and again the two kids played at the seaside until late in the evening, still without their mother s company. Then the elder brother was about to lead the sister back home.
