My First Mid-Autumn Festival Abroad
Last year, I was studying in Canada. It was my first Mid-Autumn Festival away from home. I felt a little sad because I couldn't be with my family. But I decided to share this festival with my Canadian friend, Tom.
I wanted to make mooncakes, but I had never made them before. I called my grandmother in China. It was early morning there, but she was happy to help. She told me the recipe step by step. I prepared the ingredients—flour, sugar, oil, and red bean paste. I worked hard in the kitchen for two hours. Finally, the mooncakes were ready. They didn't look perfect, but they smelled good.
Tom came to my apartment. I lit some lanterns and put the mooncakes on the table. I told him the story of Chang'e, the moon goddess. He was very interested. We enjoyed the mooncakes and watched the bright moon outside the window. Tom said, "This is the best mooncake I have ever had!"
That night, I didn't feel lonely. I realized that even when we are far from home, we can still celebrate our traditions and share them with others. It was an unusual but happy Mid-Autumn Festival.

三、任务型阅读
请认真阅读下列短文,根据所读内容在文章后表格中第1—9小题的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词,10题不少于20词。
How do you welcome the new year? Many people around the world celebrate with fireworks at midnight, like in Australia and the United States, to mark the end of one year and the start of another. Others gather with friends and family for a special meal, hoping it will bring good luck for the coming months. Whether at a big party or a quiet get-together, the new year is a time to remember the past and look forward to the future.
In different cultures, people believe it’s important to make space for new beginnings. Some clear out old things or throw away used items (物品). In certain places, burning the Christmas tree is a way to say goodbye to the past season. Many also don’t go to sleep until midnight on New Year’s Eve so they can greet the new year when it arrives.
Water plays an interesting part in new year celebrations in some countries. In Thailand, for example, people splash (泼洒) water on one another during the Songkran festival to wash away bad luck. In parts of Latin America, some throw a bucket (桶) of water out the window to drive away evil spirits.
Of course, food is a big part of the celebration in many places. Families enjoy festive dinners and sweets while waiting for the countdown to midnight.
Some traditions may seem strange to outsiders! In Canada, brave people join the “Polar Bear Swim” by jumping into the icy waters of English Bay on New Year’s Day. In Spain, it is a custom to eat twelve grapes—one at each stroke (钟声) of midnight—for good luck in each month ahead. In Denmark, people save old plates throughout the year to smash (打碎) them against the doors of friends’ homes on New Year’s Eve; the more broken pieces, the more good luck!
No matter how it is celebrated, the new year is a special time to reflect, reset, and hope for happiness in the future. What may seem strange to one person is a meaningful tradition to another!
