“I wish I had straight hair”, “I’d like to be taller”. At times, we all want to look a bit more like someone else. However, the pictures we see on TV and social media (媒体) can give us not proper ideas about how our bodies “should” look. The truth is that everybody is different—and that’s a good thing. Accepting and feeling good about our bodies is really important for our self confidence (自信) .
Body confidence is when someone accepts and behaves (行为) kindly towards their body. That includes our size and shape, skin color and appearance. Jade Parnell from the Centre for Appearance Research (CAR) , says that having body confidence is “about being accepting of your body and what it does for you”.
If you feel positively (积极地) about your body, you are more likely to take care of it. Research has even shown that you are more likely to take part in activities and perform well in school. However, feeling agitated about your body could make you step back, do less well at school and even feel down.
It’s important to remember that everybody is different. Parnell says, “Try to talk positively about your own body and other people’s bodies. Try not to pay too much attention to appearance.” She also suggests treating (对待) your body well by eating different kinds of foods, exercising to feel good and to have fun, and getting plenty of sleep. Remember that you are more than how you look.

After crossing the river, Dorothy and her friends came to a flower field.
“What beautiful flowers!” Dorothy said.
“When I have a brain, I will probably like them better.” the Scarecrow (稻草人) said.
“If I had a heart, I would love them.” added the Tin Woodman (铁皮人).
“I always liked flowers,” the Lion said. “But there are none in the forest so bright as these.”
Soon they found themselves in the middle of poppies. It is known that when there are many of these flowers together, their strong smell will make anyone breathing it fall asleep, even sleep forever. But Dorothy didn’t know this. Soon Dorothy’s eyes grew so heavy that she felt she had to sleep. Dorothy fell among the poppies, fast asleep.
“The smell is killing us all. If we leave her here, she will die,” said the Lion. “I can hardly keep my eyes open, and the dog Toto is asleep already.”
“Run fast and get out of here,” said the Scarecrow to the Lion, “We can carry the little girl, but you are too heavy.”
The Lion ran as fast as possible but he fell asleep before he was out of the field. Luckily, the Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman were not troubled by the smell. They made a chair with their hands and carried Dorothy through the flowers to the grass far enough from the poppy field.
The Tin Woodman built a truck and pulled the Lion with the Scarecrow. The sweet fresh air woke Dorothy, Toto and the Lion. Soon they continued their journey.

Good communication is like a magic key. It can open the door to making friends and getting along well with people. Here are some useful ways to help you communicate better.
Listen carefully.
When your friends are talking, put away your phone and look at them. When your friends are sharing something with you, give them your full attention. For example, when your friend says, “I got an A in the math test!” You can reply, “Wow, that’s really amazing! You must work pretty hard. Can you tell me how you prepared for it?” This shows that you are listening, and makes your friend feel valued (被重视的) and encourages him or her to share more.
Express yourself clearly.
When you need something, make your request simple and direct. For example, if you want to borrow a pen from your deskmate, you can say, “Could you lend me your pen? Mine just ran out of ink (墨水).” In this way, your deskmate can quickly understand your need and he is more likely to help you.
Respect others’ opinions.
In a group discussion, don’t say, “You are wrong.” If your classmate says, “We should have a picnic in the park.” You can say, “That sounds fun, but what about going to the zoo? We can see cute animals there.”
These ways will help you communicate better. Try them, and you’ll find it’s easy to talk with others!
8.What should you do when your friends are talking?
A.Leave them. B.Look at your phone.
C.Give them your full attention. D.Talk about yourself.
9.How should you make a request if you need anything?
A.Say it clearly and directly. B.Write it down on paper.
C.Wait for someone to ask you. D.Use a lot of words to explain.
10.Why is it important to respect others’ opinions in a group discussion?
A.Because it makes you look smarter.
B.Because you must always agree with others.
C.Because it makes the discussion longer.
D.Because it helps everyone share their ideas happily.
11.Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.The tips for making money B.The ways to communicate better

Liu Xiang — trained to be the best in the world!
For Liu Xiang, life as a sports hero began in 2004. First, some people invited him to competitions(比赛) around the world. Then, the Chinese team chose him for the Athens(雅典) Olympic Games and he won a gold medal.
Liu Xiang was not a successful athlete at first. He was born in Shanghai on 13th July 1983, and started training when he was very young. In Grade 4, he went to the Sports School of Shanghai. At first, his teachers encouraged Liu to train for the high jump.
In 1998, Sun Haiping noticed Liu Xiang’s ability in hurdling(跨栏), and later he became Liu’s coach(教练). In 2001, people set up a special programme to help young sportsmen and sportswomen. Liu Xiang was among them. People recorded his races, and they compared him with the world’s best sports stars. Sun Haiping used the information to change his training methods(训练方法)for Liu Xiang.
In May 2001, Liu Xiang won his first international 110m hurdles race in Japan. In 2004, he won the first Olympic gold medal for China in the 110m hurdles race, and at the same time broke the Olympic Games record. It was also the first time an Olympic gold medal for hurdling hung round the neck of a sportsperson from an Asian country.
Liu Xiang trained very hard. In fact, he trained so hard that he hurt his foot. From 2008 on, he suffered(饱受……之苦) a lot from his foot problem, but he did not give up. Though he missed some competitions, he still returned to first place in the world 110m hurdles race in 2012.
It is a pity that his foot problem stopped him from completing the 2012 London Olympic Games. But he is still a symbol of courage and success, and we continue to take great pride in him.
