Poems from Tang and Song dynasties, operas from Yuan dynasty, and novels from Ming and Qing dynasties are very famous in China’s history. Today, I’d like to recommend Song of Autumn, one of the poems by Liu Yuxi(772-842), a famous poet and writer in the mid Tang dynasty.
Just as shown in the first line of the poem, most ancient poets liked to describe autumn as a sad time, but in this poem the season appears differently. In Liu’s eyes, autumn, full of life and hope, is even better than spring morning. He describes the bright scene of a crane riding the clouds and flying into the blue sky.
With his poems paying special attention to expressing personal feelings, as well as the daily life of common people, Liu wrote poems with beautiful music-like words. You may feel it in this poem. Though being translated thoughtfully by experienced Xu Yuanchong, the poem still reads not so beautifully as that in Chinese. I personally think that English is sometimes not so powerful as Chinese.
Here is another example, in Liu’s essay An Eulogium on a Humble Cell(《陋室铭》), with less than 100 words, he shows a lively picture of his humble cell. However, it also shows how he was pleased with the poor and simple life. People may find it strange that one can feel happy living in such a humble cell. Learning from his famous sentence, “be fragrant because of my virtues”(斯是陋室, 惟吾德馨), I think to be a respectable man is more important than to live in big houses, to wear beautiful clothes, to enjoy delicious food, and even to gain knowledge.
1. Which dynasty is the poem Song of Autumn written in?
A. Song. B. Yuan. C. Ming. D. Tang.
2. How was autumn in Liu’s eyes at that time?
A. He thought it was a sad time.
B. He thought that autumn was rather cloudy.
C. He thought Spring was better.
D. He thought autumn was a hopeful season.
3. Which of the following is the feature of Liu Yuxi’s works according to the passage?
A. Expressing personal feelings.
B. Describing daily life of young people.
C. Picturing blue sky and a crane.
D. Writing songs according to music.
4. How did Liu feel about living in a humble cell in the writer’s opinion?
A. Strange. B. Unhappy. C. Satisfied. D. Lonely.
5. Influenced by Liu Yuxi, which of the following does the writer think is the most important?
A. To be a respectable man.
B. To live in a big house.
C. To wear beautiful clothes.
D. To gain more knowledge.

Donglan Bronze Drum Museum is China’s first private bronze drum museum. It is in Donglan, Guangxi province and its owner is Chen Yaoling.
Chen was a traditional Chinese medicine doctor and treated local farmers himself. One day in 1974, he treated a woman. The woman’s family offered him the gift of a cow to show thanks, but Chen refused, saying it was too expensive. Finally, the family gave him an old bronze drum. That was to be the first piece in Chen’s bronze drum collection. Since then, he has collected over 100 bronze drums.
Now, Chen has the largest collection of bronze drums belonging to the Zhuang people on his own. The history of bronze drums in Guangxi dates back 2,000 years. At present, there are a little more than 2,000 bronze drums of the Zhuang people in museums around the world, but Donglan has the largest collection.
The bronze drum has been handed down from generation (代) to generation, but few people know its history. Chen has tried to let more people know the stories of each bronze drum he collected. Ten years ago, he borrowed about 5 million yuan to build a museum to popularize the Zhuang people’s cultural treasure. The museum now shows over 100 bronze drums in different halls according to what people used them for in the past.
Unlike other museums, visitors to Chen’s museum can have a zero-distance contact with the bronze drums. It will arouse their interest and encourage more people to protect the drums.

B. How Chen got his first old bronze drum.
C. How Chen collected over 100 bronze drums.

B. Over 2,000 bronze drums of the Zhuang people are in Donglan.
C. Donglan people want to know the history of bronze drums well.
D. Chen personally has the most bronze drums of the Zhuang people.
8. Chen put the bronze drums in different halls according to their ________.
A. uses B. sizes C. prices D. colors
9. It’s impossible for visitors to see the sign “________” in the museum.
A. B. C. D.
10. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. The History of Bronze Drums
B. Bronze Drum Activities in Donglan
C. A Man and His Bronze Drum Museum
D. Zero-distance Contact with Bronze Drums

One day, Confucius was walking along a road with his student Zilu. The teacher said, “Look! There is a horseshoe. Pick it up and put it in your bag.” Zilu said, “It isn’t worth the trouble.” His teacher said nothing but picked it up himself.
When they got to a nearby town, they had a rest. There Confucius sold the horseshoe and with a little money he bought some cherries (樱桃). The teacher and the student continued their way. At Alexandria Country Day School in Virginia, a group of sixth-graders had a special project. They used 3D printers to create mini 3D-printed model villages which were designed (设计) for homeless people.
The students got the idea from a company called Icon, which makes homes with 3D printers. They want to make cheap housing for everyone. Icon’s homes are made of concrete-like (混凝土类) materials, which are very cheap. And building these homes just takes a few days.
Allison McDonald is the science teacher and the director of the sixth-grade project. She said “Through the project, the students not only learned about invention and teamwork, but they also learned to understand the real needs of homeless people.” While creating their mini 3D buildings the students explored (探索) how such technology allows the freedom of design and how to better use the technology in daily life. 四、阅读表达 (共5小题,每小题2分,计10分)
A Chinese AI tool named DeepSeek became popular worldwide in early 2025. This free AI assistant (助手) can chat, write, translate and solve problems. Students, teachers and office workers use it widely. For example, a teacher might use DeepSeek to plan lessons while others might use it to write a report, make a song and so on. Its ability to understand natural languages makes it feel like talking to a wise friend.
DeepSeek is changing how students learn. This AI tool uses data (数据) to make hard subjects easier. For example, in math, DeepSeek can find a student’s mistakes and give step-by-step answers. With it, students can know which step is wrong, how to correct the mistakes and learn math better. One student said, “It feels like having a kind teacher anytime!” It really makes learning personal and quick.
DeepSeek also helps students practise languages. Students can use its chat part to talk with AI in other languages. It corrects grammar mistakes and tells you to choose better words or phrases. A user shared, “I practiced English every day with DeepSeek, and my speaking got better.”
However, using DeepSeek too much can cause problems. Some students copy AI answers without thinking. That will hurt their problem-solving skills. Others may not keep their information safe all the time online. Teachers suggest that students should not only depend on AI but also study by themselves. A student in Grade 9 said, “DeepSeek shows how things work, but I write my own articles to be more creative.”
DeepSeek is a strong learning helper. It gives personal help, quick answers, and real-life uses. But students must use it smartly—mixing AI’s speed with careful human ideas. By doing this, they learn better, become more careful and do things well on their own.

Dear David,
I’m glad to tell you about National Day and my holiday plan.
The People’s Republic of China was founded on October 1st, 1949. Since then, National Day has been one of the most important festivals in China with a seven-day holiday.
During the holiday, I plan to visit Hangzhou. It is a beautiful city with a long history in Zhejiang. It is especially famous for the West Lake, which is my favorite natural wonder. Hangzhou is also the hometown of Qian Xuesen, the hero in my heart. He was born in 1911. He went abroad for further study in 1935 and got a doctor’s degree in 1939. In 1955, he gave up the good working environment and tried his best to return to China. He is a great scientist with firm beliefs and will be remembered by people forever.
Yours,
Daming
