When Lobsang first met Professor Zhong Yang in 2005, he was a shy 17yearold student in a small village in Xizang. Zhong had come to their school to look for young people interested in plant research. “He told us that the seeds under our feet could change the world,” Lobsang remembers. “At first, I didn't believe him. But when he showed us how a tiny seed could grow into a tree that feeds hundreds of people, I knew I wanted to follow him.”
Zhong Yang spent every summer in Xizang from 2001 to 2017. He often walked 10 kilometres a day, climbing mountains higher than 5,000 metres, just to find one rare seed. Once, he stayed in a tent for three days during a snowstorm, protecting a box of seeds he had collected. “Seeds are like our children,” he told his team. “We must keep them safe, so they can grow into something wonderful.”
Lobsang became one of Zhong's first local students. He learned to collect seeds, record their growth, and share the information with scientists around the world. “Professor Zhong never let the cold or tiredness stop him,” Lobsang says. “He always said,‘If we give up, these plants will disappear forever.’”
After Zhong died in 2017, Lobsang and his classmates continued his work. They have collected over 10,000 new seeds and built a small seed bank in their village. “His love for Xizang and its plants is still with us,” Lobsang says. “Every time I hold a seed, I feel like he is right here, telling us to keep going.”
