M:Definitely. This is one of the most wonderful stops on our trip.
Text 3
M:Hi,Lisa.I noticed you were talking to Mr.Harris after class. Is he your new science teacher?

Text 4
M:I accidentally lost the report Lucy spent all week working on.She's going to be really angry with me.

heart. That will show her you truly value her effort.
M:I hope she can forgive me.I'll go talk to her right away.
Text 5
M:Everyone, get closer together.Let's record this beautiful sunset!

W:Cheese!
Text 6
M:Hi,Sarah.I heard you're thinking about leaving your job at the marketing agency.
W:Yes,I've enjoyed the experience, but traveling to the city center five days a week has become very tiring.
I also need more control over my daily schedule so I can spend time with my elderly parents.
M:That makes sense.Have you considered what you'd like to do next?

M:Excuse me,how can I get to the City Museum?
W:It's not far.Go straight and pass an Italian restaurant. Then turn right, walk past a cafe, and turn left.
The museum is opposite a bank.
M:Should I walk there?
W:Walking takes about 15 minutes.Or you can take Bus No.18 in front of the school. It goes right to the

W:The last bus left at 4:30 p.m.,and buses come every 30 minutes. So the next one is coming in 5 minutes.

M:You look very tired.Did you go for a long run or something?
W:Almost!I've been trying to get ready for my driving test next week, but I kept stopping the car on the
hill this afternoon.I'm starting to wonder if I can ever pass.
M:Don't be so hard on yourself.I remember when I first learned to drive,I hit a traffic pole every time I
practiced parking.
W:Really? That makes me feel a bit better.I've been watching teaching videos every night to find out what
I'm doing wrong.
M:That helps, but real practice is the most important thing.Just try to keep cool and listen carefully when
the examiner tells you what to do.
W:I'll try.You know, back when we were little, you were the one who always protected me from Mom's
anger whenever I broke her favorite cup.Now here you are, still looking out for me and helping me learn
to drive.
M:Well, someone has to keep you out of trouble. You'll get the hang of it soon.
Text 9
W:Professor Li,many students complain that they forget what they have learned quickly. Can you share
some advice on how to improve memory?
M:Certainly. One effective method is to connect what you learn with clear mental images. For instance,if
you need to remember the steps of a science experiment, try to picture the process in your mind.
W:That sounds interesting.Does it work for other things, like vocabulary?
M:Absolutely.Picturing things in your mind helps the brain store information better.Another powerful
strategy is to teach the knowledge to someone else.Suppose you are preparing for a history exam-
explain the events to a friend.
W:Why is teaching so helpful?
M:Because explaining something clearly requires you to fully understand it first. You have to organize your
thoughts and fill in any gaps in your own learning.
W:I see.That's really practical advice.Thank you!

Second, you need to bring your own water bottle;you may feel very thirsty and tired quickly in the sun.
During the trip, you will work in small groups of four. Each group will take turns being the leader, who is

Tell the teacher at once, and we will try to identify it together safely. Finally,if your group finishes the given

When Mridul Pahwa won FIU’s Presidential Merit Scholarship in 2023, the university quickly became his first choice. However, it was a chance talk with an FIU graduate from his hometown in India that finally convinced him to study there.
Still, nothing prepared him for his first trip abroad. As an only child, Pahwa arrived at Miami Airport without a local phone card and could not book a car online. Refusing an expensive taxi, he messaged a student from an FIU group chat for help. She booked a ride for him, and they soon became close friends.
Her kindness showed the warm and supportive community waiting for him on campus. From his first day, Pahwa found himself surrounded by people who cared about each other’s success. Joining INIT, the largest technology student group at FIU, he felt he had found his place. “At FIU, people share knowledge instead of keeping it to themselves,” he says.
Pahwa’s hard work brought big opportunities. A Google in Residence lecturer reviewed his CV (简历) and recommended him for an internship (实习). After his first year, he joined Google’s STEP programme in California. There, he built a tool to track machine learning systems. His excellent performance earned him a place in a higher-level internship the next year, where he worked on security tools. In 2025, he returned for his third summer at Google.
“It felt unreal to walk into Google as a freshman,” Pahwa admits. “At first, I was nervous, but I saw that even the smartest people were easy-going and helpful.” Back on campus, Pahwa shared his experience through teaching and leading workshops. Now a senior, he wanted to give back to the community that supported him.
Pahwa is also learning about quantum (量子) computing in his free time. His main lesson from FIU and Google is simple: you don’t need to know everything — just be willing to learn. He cares most about teamwork over competition. He says, “It makes a big difference to know someone will help you.”
24. What was the final push that led Pahwa to attend FIU?
A. The scholarship. B. His family’s advice.
C. FIU’s worldwide fame. D. An encounter with a graduate.
25. How did Pahwa feel when he first arrived at Miami Airport?

Pioneering creative Refik Anadol has long engaged with new technologies. He is a leading artist who works with data and AI. His art mixes technology and human feelings in a deep and engaging way. Years of this work are culminating in the soon-to-open DATALAND, the world’s first museum of AI arts, with its first exhibition (展览) open to the public on October 20, 2026.
Located in The Grand LA, a Frank Gehry-designed building, DATALAND is in downtown Los Angeles in the Grand Avenue Cultural District. It covers 35,000 square feet and features many rooms, which will be occupied by the exhibition Machine Dreams: Rainforest.
The exhibition uses sound and pictures to make you feel like you are standing in a real rainforest. It was inspired by a trip that Anadol and his co-founder, Efsun Erkılıc, made to the Amazon rainforest years ago. Unfolding across five rooms, the amazing sensory elements are based on millions of images and sounds of nature. The custom-built AI model used to create the exhibition was trained on data collected first-hand from 16 rainforests across the globe.
A big problem with AI is that it often steals data and content without the owner’s permission. DATALAND, in contrast, has established data partnerships with leading cultural and scientific organizations in London. “The best way to achieve responsible management of exhibits is to build our own models and be completely open about where our data comes from,” says Anadol.
People also worry about the environment. Data centers use a lot of resources and put pressure on nature, which is already struggling. DATALAND recognizes this and has taken steps to lessen its carbon (碳) footprint. Its Large Nature Model (LNM) is hosted on a specialized Google Cloud server located in Oregon. It runs on 87% carbon-free, renewable energy. This means that the energy a visitor uses is about the same as charging one mobile phone.
DATALAND has been a long time coming. “After a journey of many years, we are so excited to finally share DATALAND with the public,” says Anadol.

30. What does Anadol value in using AI?
A. The quality of data. B. The innovation of models.
C. The honesty in data usage. D. The application of models.
31. Which word best describes DATALAND?
A. Eye-catching. B. Record-breaking. C. Profit-making. D. Energy-saving.

Humans often copy others’ choices, from toys to diets. Now, a new study in the journal PLOS Biology shows that wild parrots (鹦鹉) do the same. Living in cities introduces animals to new things, like strange plants or food waste. For them, learning to eat new things is key to survival. However, animals are naturally cautious of unknown food, which might be dangerous. To decide if it is safe, they watch others — a skill called social learning.
To test this in wild parrots, researchers studied sulphur-crested cockatoos in Sydney, Australia. These birds are famous for adapting well to city life. The team first trained a few birds to eat blue almonds (杏仁) or red ones. Then, they placed bowls of these colored almonds in different bird communities.
The results were clear. In groups where trained birds were present, curious neighbors began eating the new food within minutes. In one group without a trained example, it took four days for anyone to try. Even more surprisingly, once one bird that had moved from another community took the risk, 15 others followed within ten minutes. By the end of the 20-day experiment, nearly 350 birds across five communities were eating the colored almonds.
The study also found interesting social rules. Lead researcher Julia Penndorf noted a “clear sex bias (倾向)”: males influenced other males more, while females were more open to changing their behavior based on any bird they saw. The most interesting was the difference between ages. Young parrots followed the crowd. They strictly copied the majority’s choice. This mirrors human children who follow what’s popular. Adults, however, were more selective, paying attention only to their close friends.
Researchers suggest this helps young birds survive. Since they move around more, copying locals helps them quickly identify safe food sources. It is similar to how humans choose a busy restaurant, assuming it is good. This study shows that social learning is a powerful tool, helping these clever birds survive and grow in our ever-changing cities.
32. What was the purpose of the experiment with colored almonds?
A. To train parrots to eat almonds. B. To create new diets for parrots.
C. To measure parrots’ intelligence. D. To test social learning in parrots.
33. What happened in the community without a trained bird?
A. Birds never tried the almonds. B. Birds put off trying new food.
C. Birds enjoyed the colored food. D. Birds followed outsiders quickly.
34. What social rule did the study find about parrots?
A. The young follow suit. B. Adults teach their children.
C. Ages make little difference. D. Males follow females’ choices.
35. What can be the best title for this text?
A. City Life Changes Bird Diets B. Parrots Prefer Colorful Almonds
C. Parrots Learn by Watching Others D. Young Parrots Learn Things Faster

In 2005, NASA launched the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO,火星勘测轨道飞行器). 36 Over 20 years later, although the mystery remains, this spacecraft has helped astronomers better understand the Red Planet.
37 The spacecraft took its 100,000th image of the Martian surface using its HiRISE camera, which stands for High Resolution Imaging (高分辨率成像) Science Experiment. This device, operated by the University of Arizona in Tucson, has helped NASA keep track of the ever-changing landscapes of our planetary neighbor. “ 38 It has also recorded the continuous changes of the Martian surface over time,” said Leslie Tamppari, MRO’s project scientist. “We’ve seen dune (沙堆) fields marching along with the wind and rocks fall down high hills.”
The historic image shows dunes in a region called Syrtis Major, located about 50 miles from Jezero Crater, which NASA’s Perseverance rover (“毅力号”火星车) is now exploring. Taken on October 7, 2025, the picture shows surface features on Mars and presents different colors seen in close-up views.
A high school student suggested the subject of the image through the HiWish site, where anyone can suggest parts of the planet to study. The material carries great importance for NASA’s future human missions to Mars. 39
Shane Byrne is the camera’s main researcher. 40 One hundred thousand images just like this one have made Mars more familiar to everyone.
A. Last year, the MRO also reached a major landmark.
B. Scientists confirm plenty of water exists widely on present Mars.
C. The images provided strong evidence of ancient river valleys on Mars.
D. Its mission was to discover evidence of lasting water on Mars for life to survive.
E. HiRISE has shown the huge differences between the surfaces of Mars and Earth.
F. The organization’s work to connect its projects with ordinary people is admirable.
G. He noted data sharing and public-proposed shooting sites are key features of HiRISE.

“I’ll be right back,” Melinda Pereira told her staff before heading out for a walk at Echo Lake Park in Henrico County, Virginia.
The 60-year-old mother of three and grandmother of six works as the program director for a group home for people with disabilities and took a few minutes to clear her head. “Okay, I should head back,” she told herself after one lap around, but that was when her world turned black!
Meanwhile, Registered Nurse Alyssa Leimberger took a short break from working at home and went for a walk with her neighbor, Kris, in the same park. “What’s going on?” Alyssa asked when she saw a few people gathering around a woman lying on the ground. “Has anyone called 911?” Kris asked anxiously. “Yes,” someone said, and then asked, “Do you know CPR (心肺复苏)?”
“I’m a nurse!” Alyssa shouted. She got down on her knees next to Melinda and checked her breathing. Suddenly, Melinda let out a long breath and then became silent. “Her heart stopped!” Alyssa said at once and began CPR, pushing hard on the woman’s chest (胸膛) to keep her alive.
Alyssa was still helping the woman with CPR when the doctors arrived. They used a special machine twice to try to restart her heart, but Melinda showed no sign of life as they carried her into the ambulance (救护车). Watching the ambulance leave, Alyssa felt a heavy heart. “I hope she makes it,” she told Kris as they walked home, but she knew it would be very difficult for Melinda to pull through.
And yet, weeks later, Melinda came around. “You were extremely lucky,” the doctor told her. “A bystander started CPR right away. It’s the only reason you made it.” Melinda felt a great sense of gratitude and knew she had to find her hero.
