Nick Woodman is well known as the founder of GoPro,a camera designed primarily to help
sports activity lovers get close-up videos. The camera is frequently used in water sports, skydiving,
biking, etc, and can also be used as a general video camera.
Nick was born in 1975 and was raised in California, where he attended university and finished
his degree in visual arts.GoPro wasn't his first business attempt, the first was Empowerall.com,a
website selling digital items. The second one was Funbug,a gaming platform that allowed people the
chance to win cash prizes.Unfortunately, they were both failures, but they gave Nick the experience
he needed to succeed with GoPro.
During his surf tour in Australia and Indonesia,Nick attached a small 35mm camera to his hand
using a rubber band (to take his videos while surfing. At that time, many extreme sports
lovers like Nick were not able to get close enough to the action or were unable to buy proper
equipment at affordable prices, and that was where GoPro came in.Nick's idea was to create a belt
that the users could connect the camera to their body.
The first designs of the camera focused on wrist()cameras,which would be very useful for
anyone wishing to shoot while using both hands.GoPro cameras have now become a phenomenon
for anybody who is into sports or traveling, and in addition to wrist straps ()they also offer
head straps, chest belts, and poles that can be lengthened. You name it.
As a surfing lover,Nick traveled around the world to surf,so he saw a great need in the market
for easy-to-use cameras for sporting activities, and he came up with this idea by simply doing what
he likes doing and knowing what people with similar interests would want.

A positive life is generally described with character strengths, such as kindness, love, creativity,
bravery, humor, and more.By playing to your strengths, you can achieve your happiness and well-
being at both an individual and community level. But it is important to use these strengths wisely.
When it comes to humor and well-being,a study has found that people who use humor in a
friendly and kind way tend to experience less worry. However,Alberto Dionigi,a member of the
International Society of Humor Studies, and his partners have discovered a dark side to humor.
According to their research, those who use negative comedy tend to report higher levels of
pathological(病理性的)worry and lower levels of well-being.
In their research, the team was able to recognize which type of humor is connected with reduced
wory and which type is positively related to well-being.The finding also ties in with studies on
character strengths and mental health, suggesting that mental illness could be the result of the
absence of character strengths.
Take humor for instance. If this is one of your strengths but you are acting in an opposite way in
life, you could become ill-humored (perhaps you are in an environment unsuitable for humor),then
you are likely to become joyless, and your mood and well-being could suffer.Overusing humor,
however, may lead to others not taking you seriously. You could feel misunderstood and become
angry or low-spirited and, even painful sometimes.
"Humor is one of the most effective forms of communication used by humans, and it holds
significance in applied research into mental and physical health. It may have plenty of positive
effects applied to managing emotions and preventing mental disorders,"said Dionigi."But this could
depend not only on what we find funny but also on how our laughter is expressed."
28.What finding about humor did Dionigi's team present?
A.Its variety is ignored by most people.
B.Positive humor can produce negative results
C.All humor does not contribute to well-being
D.Its effect is affected by the receiver's mindset.
29.What might the research finding suggest people do?
A.Develop various character strengths.
B.Judge the intention behind funny behavior.
C.Make proper adaptation to character weaknesses
D.Avoid extreme application of character strengths
30.Why is the assumption about character strengths made in paragraph 4?
A.To further explain the study result.B.To stress the necessity of humor in life.
C.To compare different research methods.D.To recommend practical ways to use humor.
31.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Why Is Humor Important?
B.Is Humor the Best Medicine?
C.How Can We Become Humorous?
D.Are Humorous People Misunderstood?

The sun and the sea, both rich and free, are used in a unique project to create vertical sea farms
(垂直海洋农场)floating on the ocean that can produce fresh water for drinking and agriculture.
Professor Haolan Xu and Dr.Gary Owens from UniSA's Future Industries Institute have
developed the vertical floating sea farm, which is made up of two rooms:an upper room similar to a
glasshouse and a lower water harvest room.Dr.Owens says,"Clean water is supplied by an array of
solar evaporators(一排太阳能蒸发器)that can take in the seawater,.collect the salt and free clean
water vapor (into the air, which then changes into water and is passed to the plant growth
room.
心
"Other designs have located evaporators inside the growth room, which could take up valuable
space that could otherwise be used for plant growth. Also, these systems are easy to cause
overheating and crop death,"Professor Xu says."In our design, the vertical evaporators and the
growth room decrease the device's overall footprint.Besides,it is operated mostly by machine, and
has a low cost, using only solar energy and seawater to produce clean water and grow crops.
Freshwater accounts for just 2.5%of the world's water and most of this is locked up in glaciers,
ice caps or is deep underground. The United Nations estimates that by 2050,about 2.4 billion people
are likely to experience water shortages. In the same period, the global supply of water for
agriculture is expected to decrease by around 19%.However,the researchers have shown that the
recycled water produced in this way is pure enough to drink and has a lower salt content than WHO
guidelines for drinking water.
Dr.Owens says their design is only at the proof-of-concept stage, but after it is proved to be a
success, their next step is to ramp it up through a set of individual devices to meet larger water
supply needs."Seawater is an obvious solution to the growing global shortages of water, food, and
agricultural land,"Dr.Owens adds.
32.What is the function of solar evaporators on the vertical sea farm?
A.Controlling the temperature of the growth room.
B.Transporting water to the lower harvest room.
C.Collecting water vapor from the sea surface.
D.Removing salt from seawater under the sun
33.What is an advantage of the new design?
A.It can store extra solar energy.
B.It ensures a high output of crops.
C.It allows for more space for plant growth.
D.It can run continuously for a longer time.
34.What does the author aim to stress with the figures in paragraph 4?
A.The wide spread of seawater.
B.The seriousness of water shortage
C.The importance of WHO guidelines.
D.The poor quality of underground water.
35.What does the underlined phrase "ramp it up"in the last paragraph mean?
A.Increase the size of the farm.
B.Build a strict water-saving system.
C.Reduce the production cost of the farm.
D.Have more people know about the farm.
