The Power of Poetry
On 7 April, 2020, the 250th anniversary of the birth of William Wordsworth, one of the UK’s most influential poets, was marked. In the late 18th century, Wordsworth became famous for his poems about nature. He was one of the founders of a movement called Romanticism, which celebrated the wonder of the natural world.
Poetry is powerful. Its energy and rhythm can capture a reader, transport them to another world and make them see things differently. Through carefully selected words and phrases, poems can be dramatic, funny, beautiful, moving and inspiring.
No one knows for sure when poetry began but it has been around for thousands of years, even before people could write. It was a way to tell stories and pass down history. It is closely related to song and even when written it is usually created to be performed out loud. Poems really come to life when they are recited. This can also help with understanding them too, because the rhythm and sounds of the words become clearer.
To celebrate Wordsworth’s birthday, take a look at some of the different forms of poetry and write your own.
Limericks
Limericks are funny poems with a set rhyming scheme, AABBA. This means the first two lines rhyme with the last line, and the third line rhymes with the fourth. In the 19th century, Edward Lear popularized the form with his collection of limericks called A Book of Nonsense (1846). Here is an example of one of his poems:
There was an Old Man with a beard, (A)
Who said, “It is just as I feared! (A)
Two Owls and a Hen, (B)
Four Larks and a Wren, (B)
Have all built their nests in my beard!” (A)
Haiku
A haiku is a form of Japanese poetry. The most common style is a three-line poem. The first and third lines have five syllables, and the middle one has seven. The Old Pond is by the 17th century Japanese poet, Matsuo Basho, who is considered to be one of the greatest haiku writers.
An old silent pond.
A frog jumps into the pond,
Splash! Silence again.
Free Verse
In free verse you can rhyme wherever you want, or not rhyme at all. You also don’t have to stick to a particular metre—the word used for a poem’s rhythm. The metre changes based on the number of syllables in each line and which words are emphasized. Think of a syllable as the equivalent of a musical beat. For example, “reading” has two syllables—read-ing. Robert Graves’ poem Free Verse (1918) shows in a fun way how it can be done.
I now delight,
In spite
Of the might
And the right
Of classic tradition,
In writing
And reciting
Straight ahead,
Without let or omission,
Just any little rhyme
In any little time
That runs in my head.
Rhyming poetry
There are many rhyming styles. One common form is to make the first line rhyme with the second, and the third line rhyme with the fourth. This style, known as AABB style, is used in Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star (1806) by Jane Taylor.
Twinkle, twinkle, little star, (A)
How I wonder what you are! (A)
Up above the world so high, (B)
Like a diamond in the sky. (B)
When the blazing sun is ________,
When he nothing shines upon,
Then you show your little light,
Twinkle, twinkle, all the night.

There are many great examples of funny April Fool’s Day jokes from the newspapers and TV.
For example, in 2008 BBC News claimed that penguins could ____35____. It said that their cameraman had seen this happen while filming at the South Pole. He said that, luckily, he had filmed the event, and they showed some video of penguins taking off from the ice. Of course, the BBC later admitted they had ____36____ the whole story and used special effects to create the film.
In 1981 the Daily Mail had a story about a Japanese runner in the London marathon. The man was still running days after the race had finished. The story explained that the athlete had ____37____ the rules of the race. Instead of running for 26 miles, he believed he needed to run for 26 days. The paper said that he was lost somewhere in the middle of the British countryside.
And there’s certainly ____38____ new about these types of stories. Back in 1878, the Daily Graphic newspaper in the USA had a story about the famous scientist Thomas Edison. It told its readers that Edison had invented a food machine that would feed the human race. It didn’t explain how the machine worked, just that it would make any kind of food using air, water and earth. Many people believed the story and Edison got letters from people all over the country.
It’s not just ____39____ who enjoy trying to fool us. Many big companies have joined in the fun over the years. In 1998 a famous fast food restaurant used a whole page advertisement in one of the daily newspapers to tell us that it was going to sell a hamburger for left-handed people. It said that the new burger was just the same as the normal burger, but they had turned all the ingredients 180° in the bun (面包). They said it would be ____40____ for left-handed people to eat. Thousands of people went to restaurants to try and buy one.
So when people tell you not to believe everything you read in the newspapers, they might be right - ____41____ on April 1st!
35. A. fly B. swim C. dance D. jump
36. A. added to B. worked out C. made up D. given up
37. A. made B. followed C. ignored D. misunderstood
38. A. something B. nothing C. anything D. everything
39. A. friends B. clowns C. scientists D. journalists
40. A. funnier B. safer C. healthier D. easier
41. A. exactly B. mostly C. especially D. only

Austria has been described as one of the most beautiful countries in the world. Recently, an organization has done a worldwide search for the best places to live and visit.

【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍诗歌的力量,并且分别介绍了五行打油诗、俳句、自由诗、押韵诗这四种不同的诗歌体裁。
【30题详解】
根据第一段中“On 7 April, 2020, the 250th anniversary of the birth of William Wordsworth”,2020年4月7日是他250周年诞辰,推算可知他出生于1770年4月7日。
【31题详解】
根据第三段中“No one knows for sure when poetry began but it has been around for thousands of years, even before people could write. It was a way to tell stories and pass down history”可知,诗歌在文字出现前就已存在,是用来讲故事、传承历史的方式,因此D选项表述正确。根据第三段中“This can also help with understanding them too, because the rhythm and sounds of the words become clearer”可知,大声朗读只是有助于理解诗歌,并不是理解诗歌的唯一途径,因此A选项错误。根据Free Verse板块中“In free verse you can rhyme whenever you want, or not rhyme at all. You also don’t have to stick to a particular metre”可知,自由诗没有严格的押韵与格律限制,因此B选项错误。根据第三段中“No one knows for sure when poetry began but it has been around for thousands of years, even before people could write”可知,诗歌在人们学会书写之前就已经出现,因此C选项错误。
【32题详解】
根据Limericks板块中“Limericks are funny poems with a set rhyming scheme...In the 19th century, Edward Lear popularized the form with his collection of limericks called A Book of Nonsense (1846)”可知,这本书收录有趣的五行打油诗,文中没有提到书中含有大量谜题、难以阅读,因此D选项表述错误。根据Limericks板块中“Limericks are funny poems with a set rhyming scheme. This means the first two lines rhyme with the last line, and the third line rhymes with the fourth”可知,五行打油诗一共五行,因此A选项表述正确。根据Limericks板块中“In the 19th century, Edward Lear popularized the form with his collection of limericks called A Book of Nonsense (1846)”可知,该书1846年出版,距今已经超过100年,因此B选项表述正确。根据Limericks板块中“In the 19th century, Edward Lear popularized the form with his collection of limericks called A Book of Nonsense (1846)”可知,这本书让五行打油诗流行起来,使很多人了解并且喜爱这种诗歌,因此C选项表述正确。
【33题详解】
根据Haiku板块中“A haiku is a form of Japanese poetry. The most common style is a three-line poem. The first and third lines have five syllables, and the middle one has seven”,可知俳句为三行结构,音节符合5-7-5的规则,诗歌《My Cat》符合该特征,对应B选项。
【34题详解】
根据Rhyming poetry板块中节选诗句“When the blazing sun is ____, When he nothing shines upon, Then you show your little light, Twinkle, twinkle, all the night.”,可知这是AABB押韵诗,gone和upon押韵,语义通顺。

Read the passage and choose the best words or expressions to complete the passage(选择最恰当的单词或词组完成短文)
38. A. something B. nothing C. anything D. everything
39. A. friends B. clowns C. scientists D. journalists
40. A. funnier B. safer C. healthier D. easier
41. A. exactly B. mostly C. especially D. only
【答案】35. A 36. C 37. D 38. B 39. D 40. D 41. C

【导语】本文通过BBC报道企鹅会飞、马拉松选手误读规则跑了26天、爱迪生发明食物机器、左撇子汉堡等媒体报道的实例,说明愚人节玩笑的由来,提醒人们不要轻信报纸上的一切。
【35题详解】
句意:例如,在2008年,BBC新闻声称企鹅能飞。
空格处在情态动词could之后,需填动词原形。下文“they showed some video of penguins taking off from the ice”提到企鹅从冰面起飞的视频,fly“飞”符合;swim“游泳”、dance“跳舞”、jump“跳跃”均与后文起飞的笑话内容不符。
【36题详解】
句意:当然,BBC后来承认他们编造了整个故事,并使用了特效来制作这部影片。
根据空格后“the whole story”和“used special effects”可知,报道是假的,BBC承认编造了故事,made up“编造”。
【37题详解】
句意:这个故事解释说,这名运动员误解了比赛的规则。
根据后句“Instead of running for 26 miles, he believed he needed to run for 26 days.”
