Sometimes, emotions (情绪) make you angry, cry uncontrollably, or green with envy. It’s a common belief that there are good and bad emotions, and that for successful emotion management, we must live a life free of the bad ones. But Ethan Kross, a famous expert on emotions, says this is wrong. He explains, “In the right proportions(比例), all the emotions are useful.” We can’t stop thoughts and feelings from popping up suddenly, but we can choose how to deal with them.
Vicki Botnick, a therapist from California, agrees. She thinks we should try to manage our emotions, not hide them. Instead of pushing feelings away, we should accept them. Don’t call emotions good or bad—think of them as messengers that give you important information. It might be hard to do this. When strong feelings make you feel too stressed, try deep breathing (呼吸). Breathe in slowly, hold your breath for three seconds, and then breathe out slowly. Some people also find it helpful to repeat a simple sentence like “I am calm.”
Avoiding problems and negative feelings all the time isn’t good, but getting distracted (注意力分散的) can help sometimes. After a big argument, you can either solve things right away or do something totally different first. When you come back to the problem later, you may have new ideas and a calmer mood.
Another way to distract yourself is to change your environment. Going on holiday helps you relax because new places don’t make you think of work. If you can’t travel, try exploring nearby areas. A 2024 study review showed all 27 studies found nature helps with emotion regulation. If there are no green spaces near you, make your home nicer—add houseplants, pictures of beautiful views, or photos of family and friends.
Learning to accept, reframe (重构), and manage emotions puts you back in the driver’s seat of your life. And if it feels hard, remember that no feeling lasts forever.

One of the biggest challenges in trying to achieve any personal goal is that you put them off until tomorrow, or next week. Unluckily, tomorrow never gets here. If you want to achieve a goal, you have to start on it today. Let’s learn some ways.
One goal at a time.
Often the problem is that you try to take on too many goals at once. You have a lot of things you want to complete. Even two goals at once is difficult. For now, one goal at a time. Once that’s finished, you can go to the next one. Make sure you really want it. It’s not enough to say, “It would be nice to learn French” or “It would be cool to do yoga every morning”. It has to be something you really want. Ask yourself why you set this goal, and how much time you need to spend on it. That’s important to do early, or you won’t make time for it.
Keep it simple.
It’s important not to make your personal goal too big. You don’t want to have a huge list of things to do. Instead, focus (关注) on a smaller sub-goal that will lead you to your bigger goal. Another way is to focus first on creating a habit leading you to your goal. For example, focus on forming the habit of walking each day. Once you’ve formed that habit, focus on drinking only water and then on eating fruits instead of junk snacks. And so on, until you’ve reached your goal.
Stay focused.
One of the most challenging things to achieve goals is keeping your focus on that goal. You may be attracted by other things, and when you lose focus, you suddenly stop making time for the goal. Therefore, you had better put a poster on your wall, or make your goal your computer desktop picture. Also you can tell others about it and have them help you achieve your goal.
How to Make the Time for Your Personal Goals
What makes it 1 for you to achieve your goal is that you choose to put it off.
However, time 2 for no man. Please start on your goal right now.
Setting a goal at a time
● You should 3 taking on too many goals at once. Once you complete one goal, you can go to the next one.
● Be sure to know the 4 for setting this goal and how long it takes you to achieve the goal.
● You won’t make time for it 5 you do it early.
Keeping it easy to reach
● Begin with the 6 goals and develop a habit that will lead you to your goal step by step.
7 focused on it
● Put your goal where you can see it 8 in order not to be attracted by something else.
● Tell others about your goal and ask them to encourage you.

【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了实现个人目标面临的挑战,并提供了三种方法来帮助人们为个人目标挤出时间并达成目标,包括一次一个目标、保持简单和保持专注。
1.根据文章第 1 段开头“One of the biggest challenges in trying to achieve any personal goal is that you put them off until tomorrow”,可推知拖延会让实现目标这件事变得有挑战性,make sth.+形容词,因此第1空填challenging。
2.根据文章第 1 段“Unluckily, tomorrow never gets here”可推知,时间不等人,对应谚语“Time waits for no man”。故填waits。
3.根据文章第 2 段“Often the problem is that you try to take on too many goals at once...For now, one goal at a time.”,也就是你应该避免同时承担太多目标,情态动词should后接动词原形,因此第3空填avoid。
4.文章第 2 段“Ask yourself why you set this goal, and how much time you need to spend on it.”,这句话是问你设定这个目标的缘由,why对应的名词是reason。可以理解为一个原因(单数reason),也可以理解为多种原因(复数reasons),两个形式都正确,因此第 4 空填 reason/reasons。
5.文章第 2 段“That’s important to early, or you won’t make time for it.”,也就是除非你早点行动,否则你不会为目标腾出时间,unless意为除非,因此第5空填unless。
6.文章第 3 段“Instead, focus on a smaller sub-goal that will lead you to your bigger goal.”,要从最小的目标开始,一步步养成习惯,因此第6空填smallest。

8.文章第 4 段“You may be attracted by other things...Therefore, you had better put a poster on your wall, or make your goal your computer desktop picture.”,把目标放在容易看见的地方,这样就不容易被别的事物吸引,副词easily修饰动词see,因此第8空填easily。
9.本题为开放性试题,需回答最想实现的目标及具体措施,且不少于 20 词。示例答案表达了提高英语成绩的目标及阅读和口语练习的措施,符合字数要求。示例:I want to improve my English this year. I will listen to English articles every morning and take notes carefully in class. When meeting difficult problems, I will ask my teacher for help actively.

We often hear a parent shout, “Tidy your room!” It’s thought that an unmade bed and messy (杂乱的) floor can make other family members stressed.
A study found that the mess in a room and its management are “central and important to happiness” while a messy living space makes people more stressed, especially in women. On the other hand, some untidiness may be the sign of creativity. So what do you think? Is it OK to have a messy bedroom? Recently, this topic has caused hot discussion online.
Yes—it’s not a big deal.
It is important for children to have their own space where they can be themselves. By allowing children to keep their rooms as they want, parents are helping children prepare for later life. Also, cleaning up your room is a waste of time and there are more important things to focus on, like work and hobbies. Anyway, there is a great chance of getting the room messy again.
No—messiness leads to bad feelings
Research shows that in a messy room, you may feel worried and can’t focus on tasks like homework. A tidy room can improve clear thinking and calmness. It also means you have more space for activities and won’t lose things. What’s more, mess might be dangerous—you can fall down or knock something onto the floor and break it.
In my opinion, we can live according to our own willingness if we live alone. However, keeping our space clean and tidy is an important life skill. It is unfair to other family members if our room is messy as it is part of their home too, and we should respect that.

Look! Growing up is often seen as a journey with different stages (阶段). As we pass through each one, our understanding of “making it” changes. Here’s a look at each stage and the surprising lessons they teach us about life and growth.
Primary School: “Almost Done”
In primary school, life is simple. With praise from teachers and small achievements, children are often led to believe that they have almost mastered (掌握) what they need for the future. “Almost done” perfectly expresses this sense, since each year they achieve something new, like learning to spell or completing a book.
Children may feel great at this stage, but it’s only the start of their journey, preparing them for future challenges and learning.
High School: “Very Close (接近)”
High school brings a new level of responsibility and choice. Students face more important tests, begin thinking about careers, and learn to be on their own. At this stage, many believe they’re “very close” to adulthood.
In fact, high school is for trying new things, not being perfect at them. Students are introduced to many sides of life but still have much to learn.
University: “Yes!”
University or college is a great achievement, and completing a degree (学位) often feels like climbing to the top. With specialized knowledge and skills, many students believe they're fully prepared to face the world.
The “Yes!” moment of graduation soon gives way to the reality that a degree is just one part of the bigger picture in building a wonderful career and life.
Life: “What!”
Upon entering the “real world”, young people often feel the challenges of life hard to deal with. Grown-up life doesn’t come with a guidebook. Responsibilities like managing your money, keeping friendships, balancing work and life and staying well require skills not fully taught in school.
This stage teaches us that life is about never stopping learning. To do it well, we must be ready to adjust our courses (调整航线), understand our own hearts, and know when to change directions.
The truth about growing up is that each stage brings new lessons and challenges, from the ABCs and 123s to the discovery that success is a lifelong journey. Take this journey with an open mind, enjoy the ride, and be ready to learn from everything that happens.
What growing up really 1 us
Growing up isn’t a straight path to success. Each stage of life brings new challenges and 2 our understanding of success.
Different stages
Primary School
Children often come to believe they have well 3 for the future. But that’s far from the full picture.
High School
Students get more responsibility and choice by taking exams, thinking about careers, and learning to depend on 4 . Although they think it is close to adult life, the stage is only about trying.
University
Many students feel like 5 the top when graduating. However, they soon realize that a degree is not 6 for a wonderful career and life.
Life
It’s natural to feel unprepared for real life challenges. And this reminds you to 7 learning outside the classroom.
There is no end to growing up. Stay open to what is to come, find 8 from it and know there will always be more to learn and experience.
Do you think you are close to success? Please share at least one reason.

Read the passage and finish the form with ONE word in each blank and answer the question that follows.
Processed food like frozen chips and pizzas is high in salt, sugar and fat. Already, the spread of cheap packaged food has a connection with more and more people who suffer from obesity (肥胖) around the world. Now scientists are trying to find out more proofs of how our industrialized (工业化的) food supply may be affecting (影响) our health.
What does processed food mean?
The researchers came up with a system that groups foods into four categories. The system says highly processed food is mostly made of industrialized ingredients. Instant noodles (方便面) and fried chicken are common examples of highly processed food. But also included are products that can bring benefits to health such as morning cereals (谷类食物), energy bars and some kinds of yogurt.
How does processed food affect people?
Researchers at the National Institutes of Health had 200 people take part in a four-week study. They found that people eat about 500 more calories a day when fed mostly processed food than given minimally (最低限度地) processed food.
In another study, researchers in France found people who ate more processed food were more likely to have heart disease. A similar study in Spain also showed eating more processed food might lead to a higher risk of death.
Why does processed food affect people?
When given less processed food, people in the study produced more of a hormone (荷尔蒙) that reduces the appetite (胃口) and less of a hormone that causes hunger. Kevin Hall, one of the researchers who led the study, also said that the source of nutrients (营养物质) might make a difference. Fiber (纤维) from fruit and vegetables may be better for making people feel full than that added to processed food such as energy bars and yogurt.
What should people do?
Limiting processed food can be difficult, especially for people with limited time and energy. People, however, should try to change the way they eat. Another challenge is the wide range of processed food in the market. It’s essential for people to tell which ones might be better or worse as food companies continually advertise their products to mislead customers.

She did it not because she hated her job, but because her job was getting in the way of her true love. She has been interested in Chongming traditional fabric (织物), made from cotton and colored with plant dyes (染料) since she was a girl. She learned how to weave (缝织) the cloth from her mother.
Before leaving her job, Song had been using her after-work time to design, sew and weave everything with her own hands. At first, the small items she made became a hit in the office. “When the things you make are liked by others, you’ll find yourself enjoying doing more and more,” Song said. Later, her name spread and she soon found that many women on the island were into handicrafts (手工艺品) like her. Her childhood playmates, friends and even strangers joined her.
A turning point came when Song and her team were having a small exhibition in a park. A crowd of people were around them to see what they were doing. Not long after that, she decided to make Chongming Traditional Fabric official. Cotton-Tree Flowers Bloom Workshop was set up in 2013. And her workshop became a place filled with happiness. By designing and making all kinds of cloth items and selling them, the women have had a sense of achievement and have also found their own value.
Soon, more and more women joined. Besides bringing tourists to their workshop to watch the process of making Chongming traditional fabric, Song started to give free classes to poor groups. They started Mama Moon Single Mothers’ Club, a training program for single mothers. For people with disabilities, they started another program called Happiness on Fingertips.

Some people find reality TV entertaining, but others think it’s over the top.
What you need to know
●Reality TV shows are typically shows that do not have written scripts and star common people instead of professional actors.
●One report found that nearly half of all TV shows watched in the US are reality shows.
●Reality television shows are cheaper to produce than traditional scripted TV shows.
●A recent study found that in 2024, 33% of Americans ages 18 to 29 watch reality TV.
There are so many kinds of reality TV shows from competitions like The Great British Baking Show and Project Runway to business programs like Shark Tank to animal shows like The Dog Whisperer. The genre first came to us audiences in the 1990s and skyrocketed in popularity in the 2000s. Today, reality TV is a multi-million-dollar industry and a major part of popular culture. Some people say there are too many shows, though, and complain that they feature fake or exaggerated (夸大的) storylines and situations in an effort to win audiences. Other people think they’re still entertaining. What do you think? Has reality television gone too far?
Yes—it’s just so fake
There’s nothing real about reality television. These shows may not have actors or scripts, so what’s the point in watching? Many shows place unhealthy emphasis on money and beauty, which makes viewers feel bad about their own lives and can harm their mental health. Competition shows can also promote (促进) the idea that it’s OK to do anything in order to win, which is a terrible lesson for viewers. Finally, it’s no fun to turn everyday hobbies like baking or crafting into competitions. People should enjoy those hobbies for the sake of doing them, not so they can win a contest or get on television.
No—it’s all in good fun
Reality TV is harmless entertainment that viewers know isn’t “real”. It still gives people something to bond (与……紧密联系) over when they talk about the latest episode or host watch parties. There are plenty of reality shows that are good-natured and not mean. Even competition programs can teach viewers that getting ahead often involves hard work, discipline (自律), and sticking to a goal. Reality shows can also demonstrate (证明) the value of teamwork and cooperation. Finally, reality shows like kids’ baking or crafting competitions can give participants a creative outlet and inspire viewers to take up a new hobby or find a new passion.

In China, unlike in many other countries, movies almost always have subtitles (字幕) in both Chinese and English. This common practice has several key purposes: to improve understanding, increase accessibility (易于理解和使用), and support cultural exchange.
First, China has many dialects (方言). People in different parts of China speak differently. Besides Mandarin and Cantonese, there are many other local dialects. Some movie characters speak in these dialects to make the story feel real. It presents a challenge to the understanding of viewers from other areas. Subtitles help everyone in China follow the story, no matter what dialect they speak.
Second, some actors have soft or deep voices. These voices can sound emotional but are sometimes hard to hear in a loud cinema, especially with powerful bass sound. Subtitles make sure viewers don’t miss any words.
Third, cinema sound is fixed. You can turn your TV up or down, but you cannot control the volume in a cinema. Sometimes, the background music or sound effects are too loud compared to the actors’ voices. The sound might not be perfect, but subtitles help viewers follow the story easily.
Moreover, subtitles make films more inclusive (包容性). They help deaf or hard-of-hearing viewers understand the dialogue, giving them a full and enjoyable experience.
Finally, English subtitles help Chinese movies go around the world. English is the world’s most popular second language. With English subtitles, international viewers, film festival judges, and movie critics can watch and understand Chinese films. This builds cross-cultural understanding and allows these films to be judged fairly on an international stage.
In short, subtitles do more than just translate words—they build a bridge between cultures. They turn every film into a place where people from all over the world can meet and share stories.

Have you ever tasted a tomato that actually tastes like a tomato? If not, you are not alone. Over the past fifty years, the flavour of commercially grown tomatoes has been getting weaker. Scientists have discovered why, and how we might bring the taste back.
The decline of tomato flavour began in the 1960s when farmers started growing tomatoes for shipping and storage rather than taste. Tomatoes were bred to be firmer, redder, and more uniform in size. These qualities helped them survive long journeys from farm to supermarket. However, these same qualities came at a cost: the loss of flavour.
A tomato’s flavour comes from a mix of sugars, acids, and over 400 volatile compounds (挥发性化合物) that produce smells. When we eat a tomato, we taste its sugars and acids on our tongue, but most of its “flavour” actually comes from the smells we detect with our nose. The classic tomato flavour is produced by a group of volatile compounds called “tomato volatiles”.
Modern commercial tomatoes have been bred with a genetic variation that makes them ripen uniformly. This uniformity is convenient for farmers because they can harvest all the tomatoes at once. But this same genetic variation reduces the production of certain volatile compounds that give tomatoes their rich flavour. In other words, the prettier the tomato, the less taste it has.
However, there is hope. Scientists at the University of Florida have identified the genes responsible for flavour production. They are now working on breeding new tomato varieties that combine the good shipping qualities with the old-fashioned taste. Early results have been promising, with some test varieties scoring much higher in taste tests than current commercial varieties.
Meanwhile, some small farmers are growing heirloom tomatoes — older varieties that have not been bred for uniformity. These tomatoes do not travel well and are often oddly shaped, but their taste is unforgettable. As consumers become more aware of the flavour problem, more people are willing to pay extra for tomatoes that actually taste like tomatoes.
The journey to restore tomato flavour shows us an important lesson: sometimes, the progress we make in one area comes at the expense of another. But with science and changing consumer preferences, we may be able to have the best of both worlds — tomatoes that are both beautiful and delicious.
The Lost Flavour of Tomatoes
Problem: Modern commercial tomatoes have become 1 in flavour over the past 50 years.
Reason 1: Farmers bred tomatoes to be firmer, redder, and more 2 for shipping.
Reason 2: A genetic variation for uniform ripening 3 the production of flavour compounds.
Solution 1: Scientists are breeding new varieties that combine good shipping qualities with 4 taste.
Solution 2: Some farmers are growing heirloom tomatoes that have 5 flavour but are not suitable for long-distance travel.
Lesson: Progress in one area may come at the 6 of another.
Future: With scientific 7 and changing consumer preferences, we may have tomatoes that are both beautiful and 8 .

When we think about artificial intelligence in healthcare, many people imagine robots performing surgeries or computers replacing doctors. But the reality is more nuanced and, in many ways, more hopeful. AI is not replacing healthcare professionals — it is partnering with them to provide better care. This partnership, when done right, creates a symbiotic relationship where both humans and machines contribute what they do best.
Let’s start with diagnosis. AI systems can analyze medical images such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs much faster than humans can. They can detect tiny abnormalities — spots on a lung, a slight irregularity in a brain scan — that a tired radiologist might miss. In studies, AI has been shown to identify certain types of cancer with greater accuracy than human doctors. However, AI does not understand the patient’s personal history, their family situation, or their fears. AI cannot explain a diagnosis with empathy or answer unexpected questions. That is where the human doctor comes in. The doctor takes the AI’s findings, combines them with their clinical judgment and knowledge of the patient, and makes the final call. The result is better than either could achieve alone.
Another exciting area is personalized medicine. AI can analyze a patient’s genetic information, lifestyle data, and medical history to predict which treatments are most likely to work for that specific individual. This is especially valuable in cancer treatment, where the same drug might help one patient but not another. AI can also predict which patients are at risk of developing certain conditions, allowing doctors to intervene early. But again, AI is just a tool. It cannot build a trusting relationship with a patient. It cannot hold a patient’s hand during a difficult diagnosis or celebrate a recovery. Only humans can do that.
In hospitals, AI is being used to predict which patients are likely to get worse. By analyzing data from monitors, lab results, and nursing notes, AI can alert doctors to subtle signs of deterioration hours before they would be noticeable to the human eye. This gives medical teams precious time to intervene. A study at a major hospital found that using such an AI system reduced unexpected deaths by 26%. Yet, the AI did not save those lives by itself. It alerted the human nurses and doctors, who then took action. The human-AI team was far more effective than either working alone.
Of course, there are challenges. AI systems are only as good as the data they are trained on. If the training data is biased, the AI’s recommendations will be biased too. For example, an AI trained mostly on data from male patients might perform poorly on female patients. This is why human oversight is essential. Humans must check the AI’s work, question its conclusions, and correct its mistakes. The future of healthcare is not humans versus AI. It is humans with AI. When we design systems that respect the unique strengths of both — AI’s speed, accuracy, and data-processing power, and humans’ empathy, judgment, and creativity — we create something truly powerful. The goal is not to automate healthcare but to augment it.

Song Rongyao, from Shanghai’s Chongming Island, once had a steady (稳定的) job. Four years ago, she finally decided to give up her job.
Running the club has enabled Song who was very shy to do something she could never do before, such as communicating with all kinds of people. Song considers the workshop as a symbol of independence and she hopes it will help more women to fight for a better life on their own.
