A few years ago, teenager Mia Heller came across an article in her local newspaper about ongoing water quality issues in her neighborhood in Warrenton, Virginia. Tests had revealed that the water available for daily consumption was highly polluted by microplastics. Not long after that, Heller’s parents invested in a water filtration system at her home. The system, however, comes with high price tags and constant upkeep. Seeing her mother replace the water filter membranes (膜) time and again, Heller set out to find a better solution.
By early January of 2025, after testing in her garage and kitchen and overcoming obstacles, she had a working prototype (原型). “It was essentially just a container,” she says. Within the container was her filtration system, Heller chose a reusable magnetic (磁性的) oil called ferrofluid to selectively bind to microplastics as water flows through her filtration system. While her model successfully filtered out the microplastics from the water in two simple steps, the system still required constant maintenance, as it did not self-recycle the ferrofluid.
Determined to find an answer, Heller continued experimenting. About five trials later, she found the perfect solution. Her current prototype, which is about the size of a standard bag of flour, consists of three modules. The first unit, about a liter in volume, holds the polluted water inside it, while the second stores the magnetic oil-based ferrofluid. The core process takes place in the third module, which is much smaller. “A magnetic field pulls the microplastics out of the water, and the ferrofluid is recovered and reused in a closed circle,” explains Heller.
According to her tests, her prototype successfully removed 95.52 percent of microplastics from the water and recycled 87.15 percent of the ferrofluid. Traditional drinking-water treatment plants remove about 70 to more than 90 percent of microplastic components. “The result is an affordable, low-waste filtration system without the use of a solid membrane,” says Heller.
For her innovation, Heller was a finalist in the 2025 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair, the world’s largest global science competition for high school students.
4. What directly drove Heller to seek a better solution?
A. Local water pollution. B. High household expenses.
C. Frequent maintenance. D. Inspiration from a newspaper.
5. What is the key for the current prototype?
A. Its special container. B. Its two-step filtration.
C. Its three-module structure. D. Its closed-circle recycling.
6. Which of the following best describes Heller according to the text?
A. Careful and considerate. B. Curious and cautious.
C. Responsible and creative. D. Ambitious and cooperative.
7. What can we learn from Heller’s story?
A. A change is as good as a rest. B. Great minds think alike.
C. April showers bring May flowers. D. Small savings can add up.

The evolutionary path that led to the rise of modern humans is full of twists and turns, and the latest surprise is that our species likely evolved from two ancestral populations.
Scientists have long thought that modern humans emerged from a single hominin (古人类) population in Africa between 300,000 and 200,000 years ago. However, a new study led by Richard Durbin, a geneticist at the University of Cambridge revealed that two groups of hominins split apart around 1.5 million years ago, only to reunite about 1.2 million years later, initiating a genetic mixing event that resulted in the birth of modern humanity.
Instead of relying on ancient remains, researchers made use of modern human DNA from the 1,000 Genomes Project. By adding that dataset to a computational algorithm (算法), they produced a structured model that displayed two ancestral populations breaking apart and getting back together in ancient times. “The fact that we can reconstruct events from hundreds of thousands or millions of years ago just by looking at DNA today is astonishing,” said Durbin.
The model shows in the years after the split, one of the two groups contracted temporarily. “Immediately after the two ancestral populations split, we see a severe bottleneck in one of them — suggesting it declined to a very small size before slowly growing over a period of one million years,” Durbin said. “This population would later contribute about 80% of the genetic material of modern humans. The second group, meanwhile, contributed around 20% of the genes, many of which are located far away from the functional regions of the genome.
As for the identity of these ancestral populations, an element of mystery still remains. The researchers point to Homo erectus and Homo heidelbergensis as possible candidates, but further research is needed. Still, the genetic exchange shaping the modern human genome demonstrates that human evolution has involved splits and reunions. And that’s probably not limited to humans.
8. What is the highlight of the new study?
A. It rewrites human origin. B. It compares two populations.
C. It maps the human genome. D. It confirms evolution timeline.
9. Which best describes the method of the study?
A. Practice-focused. B. Culture-based.
C. Theory-guided. D. Data-driven.
10. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A. Species evolve in a clear and straight line.
B. Genetic exchange may exist in other species.
C. The status of the two groups has been identified.
D. The two populations contributed equally in genes.
11. What is the best title of the text?
A. Our Closest Ancient Cousins.
B. An Ancestral Get-Together.
C. The Art of Encoding Human DNA.
D. The Out-of-Africa Human Journey.

Each year, thousands of Americans die while waiting for an organ transplant. With the supply of human organs far from meeting demand, researchers have long looked to xenotransplantation — the transfer of organs from one species to another — as a promising solution. In his book Every Living Creature, transplant surgeon Joshua Mezrich explores the history, science and future of this groundbreaking field.
Mezrich presents a hopeful vision: genetically engineered pig organs may one day replace human organs, ending the long waiting list for patients in need. Such organs could even resist cancer and infection, making them more durable than natural human organs. Though the idea may sound futuristic, Mezrich argues it is grounded in real scientific progress.
The book combines detailed knowledge of immunology, genetics and the ethical questions surrounding animal organ transplants. It also records the stories of researchers, surgeons and patients, making it more than a simply scientific introduction. Despite its complex professional content, at heart the book is one of hope and courage.
It particularly highlights the bravery of patients who volunteered for experimental operations. In 2022, David Bennett became the first person to receive a modified pig heart, living for two months. In 2023, Lawrence Faucette took up the same challenge and survived nearly six weeks. Both knew the treatment could not save them long term, but they chose to take part for the sake of later patients.
Thanks to continuous research, the technology has improved greatly in more recent cases. In 2025, Tim Andrews received a pig kidney and survived with it for nearly nine months until a human kidney became available. For him, the animal organ served as a bridge to a successful final transplant.
As a self-described “xeno-optimist,” Mezrich recognizes that the field has been overhyped for decades. Major scientific and technical barriers still remain, such as organ rejection and large-scale production. Yet he remains confident that progress will continue. In the near future, he believes, pig organ transplants could become a standard life-saving procedure, offering a new future for patients worldwide.
12. Why do researchers turn to xenotransplantation?
A. Human organs fall far short of quality.
B. Human organs are not enough in number.
C. Animal organs are more strongly resistant.
D. Animal organs meet future medical demand.
13. What is Mezrich’s book Every Living Creature mainly about?
A. Hope and encouragement for patients. B. A complicated scientific introduction.
C. Scientific knowledge and human stories. D. An ethical solution to organ transplants.
14. What is the purpose of introducing Tim Andrews in Paragraph 5?
A. To show patients’ courage in medical tests.
B. To advise the wide clinical use of animal organs.
C. To prove the progress in pig-to-human transplants.
D. To introduce the steps of human organ transplants.
15. What does the underlined word “overhyped” in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Too poorly developed. B. Too highly praised. C. Too fully understood. D. Too rarely studied.

The Hidden Cost of Convenience Foods
Convenience foods have gained great popularity amid fast-paced modern life. They save people plenty of cooking time, which suits busy office workers and students. However, these ready-made products contain large amounts of salt, sugar and preservatives. Over-consumption will raise the risk of health problems such as high blood pressure.
Many consumers know these potential drawbacks, yet they still keep buying such food. Tight schedules leave them hardly any choice. Health experts do not demand people give them up entirely. Instead, they suggest people cook simple home-made dishes more often and treat convenience foods only as an occasional alternative.

【答案】12. B 13. C 14. C 15. B
