While France and Italy are fantastic, Europe’s less popular countries offer fewer crowds, cheaper flights, and the chance to discover unseen places. Here are some overlooked ones worth being your next destinations.
Malta
Those who watch The Crown, a popular TV series, may know Queen Elizabeth Ⅱ spent some of her happiest years in Malta. The people of this grand island are famous for their friendliness and generosity, and while other tourists are fighting the crowds in Greece, you’ll be hanging out on this less discovered and even more wonderful island.
Austria
Austria, the land of music, makes your Sound of Music dreams come true. With winter skiing, summer music festivals, wonderful natural scenery, and attractive towns and cities, this country is a must-see. It is very famous for winter sports, but we also think summer in the Alps, a snow-capped mountain range in Central Europe, is a less-known getaway.
Finland
How about avoiding Iceland and visiting Finland instead, where the people are welcoming? Finland, which is a fantastic spot to view the Northern Lights, also offers dog-sledding (狗拉雪橇), the year-round Santa Claus Village, and many amazing offshore islands.
Denmark
While most travelers choose mainland Denmark, its overseas Faroe Islands are one of Europe’s best-kept secrets. These impressive islands surely fit the road-less-travelled destination and are the perfect spots for nature lovers and hikers.

The room was filled with excitement as children from across Houston asked world-famous writers burning questions. Hands shot up as the writers discussed their starts in literature. The tweens or pre-teens met the minds behind their favorite books.
On October 25, Blue Willow Bookshop hosted the Tweens Read Book Festival at Dobie High School. The festival featured writers’ sharing, where young readers learned about writing processes and inspirational (启发灵感的) sources. The writers shared how they pulled from different themes for their stories, including friendship, humor, and fantasy.
Helen, a young reader, discussed what she was looking forward to at the book festival. “I thought it’d be really cool to meet the writers of my favorite books and series. I want to find new books that I can read, meet the writers of those old books, and ask them questions,” she said.
Although many writers want to create works, they often think it difficult to find inspiration or complete their pieces. One popular writer advised starting small by creating fan fiction, saying, “Fan fiction is a form where you take a book you like with existing characters and write your own chapters.”
Another writer did not enjoy reading as a child but was quickly attracted by comics (连环漫画) during her tween years. From there, she began creating fan fiction. “Whenever I read about a character who is going through the same thing as me, it feels like he or she is holding my hand,” she said. “Having a character to stand in for you feels like a safer way to go through that journey than doing it by yourself.”
Librarian William explained the book festival’s power in inspiring readers and writers. “We ask our students to come to meet writers, build connections, and learn how to write,” he said. “We hope that this will encourage some of our students to write their own stories and read more.”
24. What could young readers gain from the book festival?
A. The writers’ creative experiences. B. Free copies of their favourite books.
C. Advice on the life troubles of tweens. D. The chance to publish their fantasy works.
25. What did Helen mainly want to express?
A. Her expectation of the festival. B. Her gift for reading various books.
C. Her doubt about some book series. D. Her plan to write books in the future.
26. Why are the two writers in paragraphs 4 and 5 mentioned?
A. To prove tweens’ preference for comics.
B. To show the writing journey is always easy.
C. To prove fan fiction is a must for new readers.
D. To show ways to encourage the youth to write.
27. What is William’s attitude to the book festival?
A. Curious. B. Positive. C. Uncaring. D. Doubtful.

Previous research has suggested that viewing art might influence mood, but the research was limited. This new study examined years of existing research, providing for the first time a clear and full overview of when, where, and why art viewing was used to improve well-being.
The study found that viewing art can improve well-being, which is related to meaning in life and personal growth. These benefits were observed in different locations, such as museums, galleries as well as hospital settings, and could also be experienced through virtual reality (VR). A wide range of art types including photography and sculpture (雕刻术) were found to improve well-being.
People often think of art as something luxurious (奢侈的), but our study suggests that viewing art — whether as a hobby or for health-related purposes — can meaningfully support people’s health and happiness. In the researchers’ view, art is a low-cost, easily-available resource for people’s mental state. This study opens up exciting possibilities for combining art with everyday environments and public health strategies.
Claire Howlin, Assistant Professor in the School of Psychology, Trinity, said, “While the mental health benefits of creating art have been widely explored, the influence of viewing art has been under-researched and undervalued.” Yet visual art is present and accessible in everyday spaces — museums, galleries, hospitals, and homes. Understanding its effects can unlock new avenues for improving health and happiness through regular contact with art.
Since 2019, the WHO has recommended that creative methods should be used along with medical care. Art can satisfy people’s needs to search for meaning in life, build self-worth, and develop positive identities, which are important for dealing with the difficulties of life. Departments of health and arts committees across Europe are looking for high-quality evidence (证据) to recognize which types of art can be used for each type of medical outcome. This review will help to carry out studies covering wider fields in the future.
28. How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A. By using numbers. B. By giving examples.
C. By asking questions. D. By making comparisons.
29. What do the researchers think of art?
A. There are limited locations for viewing it.
B. There are high requirements for viewing it.
C. It is inexpensive and reachable to some degree.
D. It is often fashionable and luxurious in everyday life.
30. What does the underlined word “avenues” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Plans. B. Demands. C. Ways. D. Arrangements.
31. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Art helps people deal with their hardships.
B. Europe has found proper art types for medicine.
C. Creative art methods should replace medical care.
D. The European review has finished wider art studies.

Clownfish are known for their cooperative relationship with anemones (海葵). They are also famous in pop culture, thanks to the movie Finding Nemo, where the main character is a clownfish named Nemo. Now, researchers have noted that clownfish will shrink (缩小) in order to survive ocean heatwaves. The research was conducted by three famous universities with the help of a conservation and research centre in New Guinea.
The research team measured the length of 134 clownfish every month over 5 months. They also tracked water temperatures every 4 to 6 days during the heatwaves, which refer to periods of unusually high sea surface temperatures. As the heatwaves are becoming increasingly common because of climate change and global warming, clownfish shrink in response to such heat stress.
Clownfish that shrank achieved a 78 percent increase in survival chances under heat stress. Besides, their survival rate can be further improved if they shrink along with their partners. This marks the first discovery of a coral reef (珊瑚礁) fish changing its body length to adapt to environmental conditions. In the research, 100 out of the 134 surveyed clownfish reduced in size.
Melissa Versteeg, a PhD researcher leading the study, states that the fish are truly getting shorter physically, not simply skinnier under stress. Though the exact adaptive mechanism (机制) is still unclear, some other ocean animals can also shrink by reabsorbing bone material to deal with environmental pressure. Senior study author Dr Theresa Rueger pointed out that the size reduction caused by heat stress effectively improves the clownfish’s survival ability. This unique adaptive behavior may well explain the general size reduction of fish in ocean waters.
Further studies are required to check whether other fish species also have such size-shrinking abilities. New findings in this field will provide a reasonable explanation for the shrinking body size of fish across the world.
32. Why do clownfish shrink?
A. To adapt to environmental pressure.
B. To satisfy their partners’ requirements.
C. To improve cooperation with anemones.
D. To enter the conservation and research centre.
33. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the study?
A. Its purposes. B. Its conditions. C. Its findings. D. Its limitations.
34. Which statement about clownfish would Melissa Versteeg agree with?
A. Shrinking lowers their survival ability.
B. They only turn skinnier when facing stress.
C. Other ocean animals also shrink just like them.
D. The exact cause of their shrinkage remains unknown.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. Bad Influences of Clownfish’s Size Reduction
B. A New Discovery on Clownfish’s Body Change
C. Global Warming Threatening Clownfish’s Living
D. Clownfish’s Survival Ability Affected by Heatwaves

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Small talk may bring happiness! However, some people are not good at small talk. 36 Here are some tips for improving your communication skills and making your small talk more enjoyable.
Prepare some topics to start a conversation. If you have seen a wonderful movie or have read a good book, you can share your ideas about it. 37 When you are sharing the same experience with someone, it’s easy to start a conversation. You simply notice and comment on what’s going on around you.
38 These questions require more than a simple one-word answer. If you ask questions that need more details to answer, the conversation will go on longer. For example, if you are at a summer pool party, don’t ask people whether they like summer. Instead, ask them what they like or dislike about summer. So, instead of getting a one-word answer, you may have the chance to share in a memory.
Be a student who listens. Nobody knows everything. So, as someone is answering one of your open-ended questions, they bring up something about what you know nothing. So, listen to him or her! This lets the other person become the teacher. He or she feels good about sharing his or her knowledge, and you get to learn something. 39
Don’t ask, “So, what do you do?” 40 So, ask something like, “So, what have you been doing these days?” instead of asking, “What do you do for a living?” One general question can create a chance to share something you have in common.
A. It’s a win-win situation.
B. Some people don’t like their jobs.
C. Ask open and unlimited questions.
D. Don’t ask others about their daily life.
E. So, communicating with someone is often one-sided.
F. In fact, making small talk doesn’t have to be boring.
G. You can talk about something that you’ve recently learned.

Every time I see the empty spot on Mum’s shelf, I recall an incident that happened years ago, from which I learned a valuable life lesson. I always feel ashamed (羞愧的) when my mind goes back to that day.
“Sam, your father and I need to attend a meeting. You’d better behave yourself!” Mum shouted from the doorway as she waved goodbye to me. Since it was a Saturday, I was lying on the sofa after a delicious breakfast. “OK, Mum,” I replied happily.
Then I thought about the different activities I could do. Suddenly, a bright idea struck me. My eyes widened when I realized that I had the choice of playing with my new birthday present: a soccer ball. Just at that time, I remembered that Mum had warned me not to play in the house. “But now Mum and Dad are not at home. I can play soccer freely!” I thought to myself. So I carried the ball skilfully and performed some soccer tricks.
After some time, I suddenly thought maybe this was my only chance to play soccer at home, so I decided to perform a cool trick. I imagined the basket as a goal and was going to kick the ball into it. The ball hit the edge of the basket and flew through the air like a star straight towards the beautiful vase (花瓶).
Bang! The vase fell from the display shelf and broke into pieces. Such a loud noise even frightened my little pet cat, Cody. My heart beat fast. I felt terribly scared and sorry. I tried to clean the floor. Cody stood there, looking at me. Before all these pieces could be gathered up on the floor, I heard the sound of the key turning, and then the door opened.
