“Schools are finally reopening, mate,” my volleyball mate Sardar announced, smiling widely with unmistakable relief. For him, this joy was about the quiet that schools brought back into families’ lives. For us, it also meant something else entirely: My youngest, Naveed, was starting school for the first time.
Over the past few days, we’ve been wandering through shopping centres, trying to dress and equip him for what feels, in his mind at least, like a major mission. In the midst of all this, I’ve noticed something quietly beautiful. Whenever I took Naveed shopping with me, he moved directly towards children’s books. There’s something grounding about seeing him like that: cross-legged, serious, and absorbed.
When I was a child, material comfort was absent. And yet, it was there that my elder brother developed an extraordinary love for reading and writing. He read anything he could get his hands on — old newspapers, textbooks, and whatever. This was the 1990s, before screens and easy Internet access. During the day, he worked long hours in a factory. In the evenings, he read, wrote and listened to music, as if words and sounds could hold the world together. That love didn’t evaporate with time. It sharpened. Years later, it would lead him to become a successful writer.
It would be easy to say that his success came from his difficult childhood. But I have never fully believed that. Now, my own children are growing up in materially comfortable Melbourne. One child loves books and asks endless questions. Another is thoughtful but dislikes reading, preferring movement, conversation, and observation. They live in the same household, yet they have entirely different relationships with learning.
Personally, I believe that curiosity cannot be developed in one simple way. Parents can give support, but children are different. As Naveed steps into his first classroom, I wonder what version of curiosity the Australian education system will recognise in him. I wonder how he will find his own path — and how much I must learn to let go.
24. Why was Sardar happy about schools reopening?
A. He could get peace at home again.
B. He intended to support new students.
C. He expected to see his old school teachers.
D. He could play more volleyball with his friends.
25. What attracted the author’s attention to Naveed?
A. His plan for the first school day.
B. His ability to make new friends.
C. His choice of school clothes.
D. His strong interest in books.
26. What does the underlined word “evaporate” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Increase. B. Postpone. C. Produce. D. Disappear.
27. What does the author realize at the end of the text?
A. Children need both guidance and freedom.
B. Curiosity can be developed through reading.
C. Parents should leave children completely alone.
D. Schools play a decisive role in students’ growth.
C
The only way that I would ever naturally attract a cat is if I were covered in fish paste. My daughter, however, is a cat magnet. She only has to step outside, and cats often follow her down the street. It seems that some people are more likely to be approached by cats, but is it because of the people, the cats, or both?
In contrast to their famously standoffish (冷淡的) reputation, many cats really do choose to be around people. In a study of 50 cats living in homes and shelters, the majority of cats chose human company over food and toys.
Cats have a strong sense of smell. They can tell the difference between the smell of their owners and that of unfamiliar people. Besides, they can pick up on scents (气味) that are related to human emotions. In another study, researchers presented cats with swabs (拭子) of sweat that came from people when they were feeling happy, frightened, stressed or neutral. Facing the fearful scent, the cats were more likely to flatten their ears, move their tails, tense up and back away. So, would a cat willingly approach a person who is frightened? The evidence suggests no.
The way people behave also matters. In another study, researchers monitored what happened when 119 people were allowed to interact with cats in a re-homing shelter. Basically, the scientists filmed and watched a lot of cat videos and found that people who were more nervous often tried to control the cats instead of paying attention to their signals. Cats, however, seem to prefer people, like my daughter, who respect their needs and give them space.
Of course, not all cats are created equal. They have personality differences too, and this also influences how they behave around people. So, being a cat magnet is a skill you can learn, and treat cats with respect.
28. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 1?
A. Analyse reasons. B. Introduce the topic.
C. Make a comparison. D. Give some examples.
29. What does the study in paragraph 3 show about people feeling frightened?
A. Their voice may frighten cats easily.
B. Their actions may draw cats’ attention.
C. Their smell may affect cats’ behavior.
D. Their feelings may change cats’ habits.
30. What can be known about cat magnets?
A. They are interested in controlling cats.
B. They usually watch a lot of cat videos.
C. They may be more aware of cats’ needs.
D. They are likely to go to animal shelters regularly.
31. What does the text indicate about human-cat relationships?
A. They are shaped by both sides.
B. They are critical to human health.
C. They are subject to human efforts.
D. They are decided by a cat’s personality.

A new spacecraft, Starcloud-1, reached orbit in November 2025. About the size of a small fridge, it carried an advanced chip to perform complex AI tasks in space.
Why? Growing AI demands more power for data processing. The possibility of placing data centres in space has caught significant attention. Data centres on Earth already use a large amount of electricity, and cooling them also needs a great deal of water. Space seems to be a good place to build data centres because it gets plenty of sunlight and is naturally cold, which gives it natural advantages for data-processing operations.
So, what needs to be done, and what is the future of data in space?
There are several ways to process data in space. One is to launch data centre satellites equipped with AI chips — like Starcloud-1 — that can perform tasks either for other satellites or for operators on the ground. Another is to equip satellites with advanced capabilities to process their own data. “I think the biggest change is going to be satellites being able to do more in orbit than what they can do right now,” says Dr Brian Weeden, with The Aerospace Corporation in the US. “It may open up a whole new world of capabilities for how we sense, communicate and do things in space.”
“Despite space being very cold, it’s hard to move heat away from a satellite because it’s a vacuum (真空). On one side, we need the structure for large solar panels, and on the other side, we need radiators (散热器) to cool down the system,” says Xavier Roser, a scientist from France.
Even then, whether satellites of such size will ever come to fruition is unclear. “We have been talking as a community about building large structures for decades,” says Weeden. “Actually doing that has proven very challenging.”
32. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A. Data centres on Earth have been replaced.
B. Starcloud-1 provides power for other satellites.
C. Space has natural advantages for building data centres.
D. Starcloud-1’s launch makes AI tasks affordable on Earth.
33. What does Weeden expect of future satellites?
A. They may become easier to control.
B. They may perform more tasks in orbit.
C. They may need less power to operate.
D. They may be equipped with more chips.
34. What can be inferred from Roser’s words?
A. A radiator hardly works in a vacuum.
B. Exploring space sees endless changes.
C. It is difficult for scientists to use solar energy.
D. It is a challenge to remove heat from satellites in space.
35. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Latest Advances in AI B. Data Centres in Space
C. Issues Facing Satellites D. Upsides of Solar Power

The summer heat hung heavy in the air as Lily moved into her new apartment with her 8-year-old daughter, Mia. Exhausted from packing and moving, they were eager to settle down and enjoy a quiet life.
However, their peace was short-lived. Their next-door neighbor, Mr Whitmore, was an elderly man who lived alone. Every evening, he would play the piano loudly, filling the entire building with music that lasted until midnight. Mia, who needed to go to bed early for school, often tossed and turned (辗转反侧), unable to fall asleep. Lily tried to ignore it at first, but after a week of sleepless nights, she decided to talk to Mr Whitmore.
One afternoon, Lily knocked on Mr Whitmore’s door. When he opened it, his face was cold and uninviting. “Excuse me, sir,” Lily said politely, “I’m your new neighbor Lily, and my daughter, Mia, lives with me. We’ve been having trouble sleeping because of the piano music in the evenings. Could you possibly play a little softer or stop earlier?”
On hearing Lily’s request, Mr Whitmore’s expression darkened. “This is my house, and I’ll play my piano whenever I want,” he shouted. “I’ve lived here for 20 years, and no one has ever complained before. You should learn to adapt.” With that, he shut the door loudly in her face. Lily felt angry and helpless. She went back to her apartment, where Mia was sitting on the sofa, rubbing her eyes. “Mommy, I’m so tired,” Mia said quietly. Lily hugged her tightly, determined to find a way to solve the problem.
The next morning, as Lily was taking out the trash, she saw Mr Whitmore struggling to carry a heavy box of books. He moved unsteadily, and the box slipped from his hands, scattering (散开) books all over the floor. Lily hesitated for a moment — part of her wanted to walk away, but her heart told her to help.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Therefore, Lily hurried over to lend Mr Whitmore a helping hand.
The next day, Lily was surprised when she heard a soft knock on her door.

W: Oh, hello. I read about your club in the paper today and I thought I’d phone to find out a bit more.
M: Yes, certainly. Well, we are a sort of social club for people from different countries. It’s quite a new club — we have about 50 members at the moment, but we are growing all the time.
W: That sounds interesting. I’m British actually, and I came to Washington about three months ago. I’m looking for ways to meet people. Er, what kinds of events do you organize?
M: Well, we have social get-togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings.
W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings?
M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages — you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday — Spanish; Tuesday — Italian; Wednesday — German; and Friday — French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a restaurant for anyone who wants to come.
W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practice my French.
M: OK. Well, if you can just give me your name and address, I’ll send you the form and some more information. If you join now, you can have the first month free.

Dear Chris,
Knowing you’re interested in the sharing meeting with the theme of “Smart Home Changes Life”, which was held by our school’s science and technology club last week, I’m writing to share something about it.
At the meeting, club members gave presentations about smart-home technology through videos and pictures. They introduced various smart devices. Besides the convenience brought by voice-controlled lights and automatic curtains, they also mentioned home safety functions, which can keep houses safe against potential dangers. Some real-life examples showed how such technology reduces housework and saves energy.
I was greatly impressed. I felt how powerful technology is. It also inspired me to study harder, and I hope to create useful technology for people someday.
Yours,
Li Hua

参考范文:
Therefore, Lily hurried over to lend Mr Whitmore a helping hand. She knelt down to pick up the scattered books, carefully putting them back into the box. Mr Whitmore stood aside, looking embarrassed and at a loss for words. “Thank you,” he mumbled, his voice much softer than before. Lily smiled gently, saying, “It’s nothing. Neighbors should help each other.” As they finished packing, Mr Whitmore hesitated and said, “I’m sorry about the piano. I’ll play softer and stop before 8:00 pm.” Lily felt relieved and thanked him warmly.
The next day, Lily was surprised when she heard a soft knock on her door. She opened it and saw Mr Whitmore holding a small piece of paper. He said he had written down a schedule for his piano playing and promised to keep it down before 8:00 pm, so Mia could sleep well. Mia also came over and shyly handed Mr Whitmore a drawing she had made. That night, the piano music was gentle and warm. From then on, they became friendly neighbors, turning their former conflict into a quiet and happy relationship.
