第一节(满分15分)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to apply to be a volunteer in the upcoming “Technology for a Bright Future” event.
I believe I am well-suited for this role. As a member of our school’s Science Club, I have a good command of both English and Chinese, which will enable me to communicate fluently with overseas participants. Meanwhile, my experience in organizing club activities has strengthened my teamwork skills.
I would be grateful if you could consider my application. Looking forward to your reply.
Yours faithfully,
Li Hua
第二节(满分25分)
One by one, Sarah approached her classmates during breaks. She quietly shared Emily’s pain and asked if they would write an anonymous note of encouragement or apology. To her surprise, everyone agreed willingly. Some even recalled Emily’s past kindness, and those who had teased her lowered their heads in shame and admitted their guilt. By Friday, the box was filled with colorful notes. Sarah secretly decorated the classroom after school, hanging each note on strings with great care, her heart full of hope.
On the final day of Friendship Week, Emily walked into the classroom, amazed. Colorful hearts with messages hung from every corner. On the blackboard were the words “Emily, You Are Not Alone.” Trembling, she stepped forward and began reading. “Thank you for your kindness.” Tears streamed down her face — this time, tears of gratitude. Seeing her tears, several classmates stepped forward and said sincerely, “We’re truly sorry.” Sarah took her hands and whispered, “See? You are never alone.” Emily looked around at her smiling classmates. A genuine smile spread across her face. She was no longer invisible.

Text 1
W: Hello, Mike, what’s up?
M: I found a key in the art classroom. Is it yours, Linda?
W: No, mine is in my pocket. You could ask Catherine. She told me earlier that she was looking for her keys.
Text 2
W: I had told you when my train would get in. I’ve been waiting here for 40 minutes. And I couldn’t get through to your number.
M: I’m sorry. I got stuck in traffic, and my phone died.
Text 3
M: Your videos about traditional costume are getting popular.
W: Yeah, but I’m feeling stressed out these days. My followers keep asking me to post new content every single day.
M: Don’t burn yourself out. Quality over quantity.
Text 4
W: Did you catch the science show on Channel 5 last night?
M: No, I missed it. Was it any good?
W: Sure, the chemistry experiment part was the highlight. You ought to check it out online.
Text 5
M: I’ve just signed up for a craft class with my friend. It kicks off next Monday.
W: That sounds really relaxing. I’ve always wanted to give hand-making a try.
M: Why don’t you come along? It’s never too late to learn.
Text 6
M: Have you tried smart glasses? They show maps and messages.
W: No. How do they work?
M: You just put them on. They connect to your phone and show information in front of your eyes. Some of them can even play music and take photos.
W: Really? They can take photos? That sounds cool. I’d love to have a try.
M: Actually, my dad bought me a pair last week. I will bring them to school tomorrow. We can try them after school.
Text 7
W: Do you know International Dark Sky Week? It starts tomorrow! It is usually held in October. It starts on October 21st and ends on October 28th this year.
M: International Dark Sky Week? What’s that?
W: It’s the world’s largest celebration of dark skies, encouraging people everywhere to discover the wonders of the night. This event was founded in 2003 by high-school student Jennifer Barlow of Midlothian, Virginia. It’s supported by the International Dark-Sky Association, Sky & Telescope and other organizations.
M: Cool! What do people do for it?
W: They do lots of things, like star parties, that is, gathering to watch stars. They can also go for walks in the moonlight. By the way, my town is going to hold a concert by the lake tomorrow night. Would you like to join?
M: Yeah! I love it!
Text 8
M: I’m planning my first international trip. Do you have any tips?
W: The first thing is to make sure your documents are in order, like your ID card, passport, and visa. Also, check if your phone works abroad or if you need to get a local SIM card.
M: Good points. Where would you recommend me to go?
W: If you want something relaxing, I’d recommend Barcelona, Spain. You can enjoy the wonderful beaches, especially if you go during the warm months.
M: Any other choices?
W: If you like history and culture, I’d suggest Rome, Italy. The city is full of ancient ruins like the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. You can also enjoy delicious food and coffee there.
M: Both tourist spots sound great. I think I’d prefer Rome for the ancient ruins.
Text 9
W: Alex, I’ve read about this year’s Service Stars. Some amazing kids made a difference in their communities.
M: I read it, too. Amara from Pennsylvania left a deep impression on me. She got a crosswalk added to a road by speaking up. Now the road is safer to cross.
W: Alice, from Georgia, is only 10, but she’s already done 200 hours of community service. She donates books, helps food banks, and even collects disaster-relief supplies. She is the pride of our state.
M: I agree! And Hudson in New York State raised over $8,000 for charity by selling handmade items.
W: It’s incredible! I know your recycling project has already involved over 100 kids and raised $2,000. What’s next for you?
M: I want to expand my presentations to more schools. And maybe I’ll organize a food drive and donate everything to the local community.
Text 10
W: Last summer, I attended a two-week summer program on environmental protection organized by my university. At first, I signed up only because a few of my friends were going. But the experience turned out to be much more meaningful than I had expected. Each day, we took part in hands-on activities together. For example, we went to a nearby beach to pick up trash, planted trees in a local park, and visited a recycling center to learn how waste is sorted and reused. The most memorable moment was meeting an ocean scientist who had studied sea turtles for over 20 years. Her passion for ocean life really inspired me. I began to realize how our small actions can make a big difference. After the program, I’ve stopped buying bottled water and developed the habit of carrying a reusable bottle with me. Next year, I hope to volunteer for a long-term environmental project, maybe even abroad.

At a workshop in Yongjia, East China’s Zhejiang Province, a piece of boxwood rests quietly on the workbench. Before making the first cut, 53-year-old woodcarver Ye Xiaopeng often spends time working out the overall composition, and the expressions of his figures he wants to express. In his view, woodcarving is not simply about carving what you see; a craftsman (工匠) has to think through what he wants to express before putting knife to wood.
To outsiders, we may take it for granted that someone born into a family of woodcarvers would follow the same path. But Ye believes that what has truly shaped his artistic vision is not only the craft passed down through generations, but also the influence of reading.
Ye’s earliest reading memories had little to do with art theory. What left the deepest impression on him, however, was a copy of the book, The Roots of Wisdom, which was the first book that made him realize how reading could shape the way a person thinks. Looking back, he believes the book’s influence lay not in any particular knowledge it provided, but in the way it encouraged him to observe the world and reflect on it. “The influence wasn’t obvious,” he said. “It was more like the grain (纹理) hidden inside a piece of wood, forming for decades, shaping both my work and my life.” After entering the arts-and-crafts world, reading gradually developed from a personal interest to a professional necessity. From learning carving techniques and copying traditional designs to studying sculptural (雕刻的) references and materials on the history of sculpture, books remained a constant companion throughout his professional development.
In Ye’s view, a sculptor can observe a figure’s expression or body position from everyday life, but the cultural meanings and spiritual qualities behind the artwork must be built through reading. “Life provides vivid images; reading provides cultural depth,” he said. Every turned page strengthens a thread that links knowledge and experience, the present and the past, and finally, creativity and tradition.
24. What is Ye’s key belief about woodcarving?
A. Simple cuts create better works. B. Pre-carving thinking matters.
C. Traditional skills decide quality. D. Carving must be realistic.
25. What can be learned about outsiders’ opinion?
A. Reading plays a key role in artistic creation.
B. Craftsmen should innovate old carving styles.
C. Woodcarving is a hard-to-learn traditional craft.
D. Family background determines one’s career choice.
26. How does reading influence Ye?
A. It changes his interest.
B. It offers advanced technique.
C. It shapes his way of thinking.
D. It provides professional knowledge.
27. What does reading bring to Ye’s artistic creation?
A. Cultural expressiveness. B. Wider recognition.
C. Improved carving skills. D. More eye-catching effects.

Many people hold the belief that mental awakening takes place in youth. They assume wisdom belongs only to youngsters. However, brain-imaging research indicates that the brain keeps improving its neural networks well into one’s early thirties.
People in their twenties are usually trapped in various real-life struggles. They rush to build careers, handle personal relationships, and adapt to social rules. They suffer setbacks and pain, yet seldom pause to digest those experiences. Most lessons remain disconnected parts in memory. They live through hardships without truly understanding what those hardships mean to them.
Cognitive (认知的) awakening at thirty seldom comes from sudden luck. It is the cumulative result of numerous past failures and reflections. After years of trial and error, scattered (零散的) life experiences connect with one another all at once. Many individuals suddenly see through interpersonal tricks, break away from outside value standards, and stop seeking constant approval from people around them. This shift feels like overnight insight, yet it grows from long-term build-up.
It is necessary to clarify that thirty is not a fixed turning point for everyone. Some people gain sharp insight in their early twenties after special life events. Others remain trapped by old mindsets even in their fifties. Psychological studies point out that awakening depends more on active self-examination rather than age. Age merely offers potential conditions, instead of guaranteeing inner growth automatically.
Late cognitive awakening carries its unique strengths compared with early enlightenment. Ideas learned from books in youth are often theoretical. By contrast, the wisdom formed around thirty is shaped by real-world setbacks. Such cognition is deeply rooted in personal life stories and hard to be shaken by outside comments. It brings stable inner peace rather than superficial insight.
So we should abandon the prejudice (偏见) that people achieve success or wisdom at an early age. What truly counts is maintaining the willingness to rethink your life. Keep observing yourself, sorting out past experiences, and you may reach mental clarity at any stage.
28. What was the common belief about mental awakening?
A. It happens mainly in one’s youth.
B. It relies on fully developed brain.
C. It requires complete thinking systems.
D. It results from various real-life struggles.
29. What does the underlined word “cumulative” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Direct. B. Self-made. C. Long-built. D. Unexpected
30. What does paragraph 4 stress about one’s mental awakening?
A. Age can promise automatic inner growth.
B. Most people get awakened in their fifties.
C. Special events prevent one’s insight into life.
D. Self-examination counts more than one’s age.
31. What message does the author intend to express in the last two paragraphs?
A. Wisdom comes with age. B. Avoid past experiences.
C. Early success is essential. D. Keep reflecting on life.
D
The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is the most popular and well-known measure of personality. Fifty million people have taken the test and it has been used by 89% of Fortune 500 companies at some point to screen employees. People put their Myers-Briggs kind on their Tinder profiles, and several years ago funders even put up $1 million to develop an app matching couples based on their Myers-Briggs personality types. While the Myers-Briggs test is telling people who to hire and marry, scientists hate it. As Laith Al-Shawaf has noted, “Any psychologist will tell you it makes no sense.”
Then why is it so popular? It’s because people are easily tricked to do psychology tests. Let’s start with the MBTI. Designed in World War Ⅱ by an American mother-daughter pair inspired by Carl Jung’s theory, the test sorts people into 16 categories (种类) with attractive names. Another benefit is that you get matched with famous people.
Despite the joy of being compared to famous people, psychologists have repeatedly argued that the Myers-Briggs has minimal predictive ability and is grounded in disproved theory. If you take the test more than once, it’s also quite likely to give you different answers each time. Another big problem is that these 16 categories are against with how present-day psychologists think about personality. Present-day psychologists think human personality consists of five continuous traits (特点), known as the Big 5. Instead of putting people into fixed groups, each trait ranges from high to low. Scientific comparisons show the Big 5 is twice as accurate as MBTI in predicting real-life outcomes.
The use of MBTI categories is a great marketing strategy and a big part of the reason behind the popularity of many questionable personality tests. People are attracted to group memberships that provide both a sense of connection to people just like them and distinction from others.
Therefore, organizations should build real meaningful identities for a sense of belonging. When making choices, turn to scientifically valid tests such as the Big 5 rather than imaginary identities from MBTI.
32. Why are some figures mentioned in introducing MBTI in paragraph 1?
A. To show its wide popularity. B. To prove its scientific value.
C. To stress its test accuracy. D. To describe its high risk.
33. What are the drawbacks of MBTI in psychologists’ opinion?
A. Unreliable theoretical base. B. False test outcomes.
C. Too complicated process. D. Poor real-life application.
34. What accounts for the popularity of questionable personality tests?
A. Practical career guidance. B. Study of mental conditions.
C. Fulfillment of social needs. D. Improvement of life quality.
35. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Personality Traits and Daily Choices
B. Hidden Problems of Popular MBTI
C. Misleading Personality Classifications
D. The Most Popular Test — MBTI

Great achievers have changed the world in remarkable ways. However, what truly defines an achiever is not just their discoveries, but the qualities that drive them forward. 36
One striking example is Yuan Longping, known as the “Father of Hybrid (杂交) Rice”. Driven by a strong curiosity about how rice production could be improved, he spent decades in the fields, observing every detail and questioning established theories. 37 His breakthrough has not only fed China but also provided a model for other developing nations.
38 Yet it was exactly these hardships that shaped his greatness. It took Yuan over a decade of failed experiments before he created the first hybrid rice strain (品种). Each failure taught him something new and his constant persistence (坚持) turned repeated failures into stepping stones toward final success.
Beyond his scientific drive, Yuan’s selflessness was equally remarkable. For example, he often rejected high-paying jobs abroad to stay in China. 39 His devotion to feeding the poor, not enriching himself, transformed his scientific discovery into a humanitarian mission that saved millions from hunger.
What sets these individuals apart is not the fame they gained or the awards they received. 40 As Yuan’s story shows, it was curiosity that started his quest, persistence that carried him through failures, and selflessness that gave his work lasting meaning — qualities that turn ordinary people into extraordinary achievers.
A. Yuan’s road to success was rarely smooth.
B. It is their character that truly makes them stand out.
C. He chose to apply his knowledge where it was most needed.
D. This is what makes him a great scientist and a beloved figure.
E. Yuan’s contribution to agriculture earned him the World Food Prize in 2004.
F. His desire to explore led him to experiment tirelessly with hybrid rice techniques.
G. At the heart of their success lies a combination of curiosity, persistence, and selflessness.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Sarah and Emily had been best friends since first grade. They did everything together — homework, lunch, and weekend outings. But everything changed in the fall of sixth grade when Emily’s family fell on hard times. Her father lost his job, and the family struggled to make ends meet. Emily started wearing the same worn-out jacket every day, and she often sat alone during lunch, pretending to eat but barely touching her food.
Sarah noticed the changes but didn’t know how to help. Every time she offered to share her lunch, Emily would smile weakly and say, “I’m not hungry.” Sarah’s heart ached for her friend, but she felt powerless. Worse still, some classmates began whispering behind Emily’s back, making cruel jokes about her shabby (破旧的) clothes. Emily pretended not to hear, but Sarah could see the hurt in her eyes.
One day after school, Sarah found Emily crying quietly behind the gymnasium. “I don’t want to come to school anymore,” Emily sobbed, wiping her tears with trembling hands. “Everyone laughs at me. I feel so embarrassed every single day.” Sarah hugged her tightly, tears welling up in her own eyes. She knew words alone wouldn’t be enough to help her friend. That night, Sarah lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, determined to find a way to make school a place where Emily could feel safe and be accepted again.
Suddenly, she remembered “Friendship Week”, a school-wide event when each class was encouraged to organize activities promoting kindness and inclusion. An idea flashed in her mind. What if she could secretly ask her classmates to write anonymous (匿名的) notes of encouragement — or even apologies — for Emily, and present them on the final day? If Emily saw how many people actually cared about her, she might realize she wasn’t alone after all. But would anyone agree to help? The next morning, Sarah arrived at school earlier than usual, her heart pounding with nervousness, determined to talk to each classmate privately before Emily showed up.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One by one, Sarah approached her classmates during breaks.

For example, we went to a nearby beach to pick up trash, planted trees in a local park and visited a recycling center to learn how waste is sorted and reused.
