Whether you want to offload old textbooks, clear your house, or make money selling used books, you have great choices in 2025. Technology has made it easier than ever to make money selling books, but there are still great ways to sell used books in person.
Powell’s Books is the world’s largest independent book store, with several brick-and-mortar (实体的) locations in Portland and a large online marketplace.
How to sell used books with Powell’s Books
• Head to Powell’s Books website.
• Click on the “Sell Books” button.
• Enter the ISBN number of your book.

• Powell’s will send you a prepaid shipping label if you accept the offer.
• You’re paid in-store credit to Powell’s books or via (通过) PayPal.
Powell’s is picky about the book condition, so if your book isn’t in good to excellent used condition, they may send your book back. They also don’t accept book club editions, old library books, and anything marked “not for resale.”
You will need to sell at least 7 books or reach $ 8.99 in credit to sell to Powell’s. So it’s not the best option for people who want to sell a book or two at a time.
Pros and cons (利弊) of selling used books on Powell’s Books:

“The most important thing is to have the determination to start. Lighting a candle is better than crying over ashes,” says Husham Althahabi, who was among the five finalists to bag the prize of the 2017 Arab Hope Makers initiative, in recognition for his efforts in spreading hope through the ‘Iraqi House of Creativity’ in Baghdad.
The Iraqi humanitarian pioneer, who began his journey helping children in 1998 when he adopted two kids, decided to take action rather than be a bystander. He saw homeless orphans wandering hopelessly around the office of a humanitarian organization looking for a shelter. In 2004, he turned his house into a foster (寄养) home, which has become a safe shelter for the city’s orphans and homeless children.
Husham’s ‘Iraqi House of Creativity’ has helped raise 480 orphans (孤儿) to lead independent, productive lives. The House currently hosts 70 children. Since winning the Arab Hope Makers prize, Husham’s ambitions have grown bigger, and the lives of the children he has taken in have changed dramatically. He finally had the means to turn his dream into reality. He put his 1 million prize towards establishing a foster home in Baghdad, which is set to be an official childcare establishment for orphans, homeless children and others in need.
Today, Husham is finally living his dream. He has built a foster home since October 2020. It is an eco-friendly, integrated institute, comprising a counselling center, health club, gym, football field, study halls and a library. The home provides full-time housing for over 280 young people and offered support to more than 1,000 non-resident children every year. Children will also be able to undertake occupational training programs in a variety of areas including cooking, sewing, embroidery (刺绣) and hairdressing.
24. What can we learn from Husham’s words?
A. It is better to act than to complain.
B. The final achievement matters most.
C. Cultural creativity solves all past troubles.
D. Self-realization is the ultimate goal of efforts.
25. What motivated Husham Althahabi to turn his house into a foster home?
A. His desire to win an award. B. The encouragement from authorities.
C. His encounter with homeless children. D. The recognition he received for kindness.
26. Which word can best describe Husham?
A. Artistic. B. Sympathetic. C. Creative. D. Hardworking.
27. What is the text mainly about?
A. Life of an award winner.
B. Problems faced by Iraqi orphans.
C. Methods to solve social problems.
D. Husham’s shift from adopter to founder.

When KJ Muldoon was born, doctors discovered a genetic mistake in his DNA that prevented his liver (肝) from removing ammonia — a toxic chemical produced when the body digests proteins. This condition, which claims half of affected children, threatened KJ’s brain and organs.
Traditional treatments struggled to control his ammonia levels, and he was too young for a liver transplant. Scientists at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia proposed a brand new method: create a custom gene-editing medicine using CRISPR technology. With KJ’s life hanging in the balance, his parents agreed to the experimental treatment.
Researchers analyzed KJ’s DNA. The problem was like fixing one misspelled letter in a word that’s three billion letters long. Working around the clock, they developed a CRISPR tool for editing KJ’s DNA. After successful animal tests, the new medicine was approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in just six months — a process that normally takes decades.
KJ was six months old when he got the first small dose (剂量) of the new medicine, which was designed to reach his liver and make one tiny change to his DNA. Soon after the first treatment, KJ was able to eat protein without raising his body’s levels of ammonia. The positive results led his doctors to give KJ two more doses, which allowed him to gain weight and stabilize. Though not fully cured — he may still need future treatments or a transplant — KJ’s condition improved dramatically, leading doctors to hope for his discharge soon.
Scientists and doctors are extremely excited about the results. In just six months, the researchers and the companies they worked with were able to create a special DNA-editing medicine for a single patient. In the past, that work would have taken 10 years or longer. The project isn’t only a success for KJ. It also brings hope to millions of other people who have conditions that might be treated by similar methods.
28. What does the underlined word “toxic” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Stable. B. Dangerous. C. Essential. D. Reactive.
29. What is the main focus of paragraph 3?
A. Authorizing the trial treatment.
B. Dangers of KJ’s ammonia imbalance.
C. Gene-editing’s lasting impacts on people.
D. Making and testing KJ’s personalized drug.
30. How do scientists feel about the result of KJ’s treatment?
A. Doubtful. B. Disappointed. C. Satisfied. D. Unclear.
31. What is the best title for the text?
A. KJ’s Successful Liver Transplant Surgery B. Global Opposition to Gene-Editing Trials
C. Baby Rescued via Pioneering Gene Method D. The Failure of Traditional Treatments for KJ
D
A recent study, which surveyed 10,000 young people from 10 countries, showed that nearly 60% of them were extremely worried about the future state of the planet. It shows clearly that climate change is not just a threat to our environment. It also poses a very real threat to our emotional well-being. This “heightened emotional and mental concern in response to dangerous changes in the climate system” is defined as eco-anxiety.
Eco-anxiety is a common occurrence among youth today. It also affects the most economically disadvantaged across the globe. But at the highest risk may be researchers who work in climate and ecological science, burdened by the reality represented by their findings.
Eco-anxiety will rise to become one of the leading causes of mental health problems. The reasons are obvious. On the one hand, climate issues seem to be getting out of control; on the other, our political class is not offering strong leadership. The COP28 conference in Dubai will be headed by an oil and gas company director.
Fortunately, greater levels of eco-anxiety will also offer an approach to the climate crisis. Caroline Hickman, a researcher on eco-anxiety from the University of Bath, warns that eco-anxiety should not be pathologized (病态化). According to Hickman, anyone experiencing it is displaying entirely natural reactions to the climate crisis. “Use eco-anxiety as a tool for good — as an emotion that can make people act in protection of our planet.” she suggests.
This is why we will also see more and more people around the world join the fight for climate justice and seek jobs that prioritize environmental sustainability. Campaigners will put increased pressure on fossil (化石) fuel industries and the governments to rapidly phase out the usage of polluting coal, oil, and gas. After all, eco-anxiety is not something we will defeat with therapy (疗法) — we will tackle it by taking action.
32. Which group face the greatest risk of eco-anxiety?
A. High school students planning careers. B. Scientists studying climate systems.
C. Farmers suffering from crop failures. D. Urban residents facing air pollution.
33. Which is a reason for the rise of eco-anxiety?
A. The worsening of climate issues.
B. The development of companies.
C. The complexity of mental problems.
D. The public’s ignorance of the risks involved.
34. What is Caroline Hickman’s main suggestion regarding eco-anxiety?
A. Treating it as a medical condition.
B. Ignoring its existence to avoid stress.
C. Seeing it as a natural push for action.
D. Prioritizing it over personal responsibility.
35. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Therapy is an essential solution needed.
B. Action is the key to tackling eco-anxiety.
C. Public interest in climate issues will decline.
D. Fossil fuel will be banned by the government.

We often hear that eating well, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly are important for good health. But do you know that writing can also help? 36 In fact, it also offers many of the same benefits as these traditional healthy habits.
Studies show that stress creates a kind of hormone (激素). High levels of this hormone harm our bodies — for example, causing extra fat around the stomach or dry hair and skin. 37 Writing is one simple way to lower this stressful chemical naturally.
When your thoughts feel messy and overwhelming, writing helps organize them. Think of your brain as a crowded room full of shouting voices. 38 As you write, you sort through these thoughts, placing them neatly on paper like books on a shelf.
39 It’s similar to cleaning your bedroom — once things are tidy, you immediately feel calmer and more focused. After organizing your ideas on paper, you’ll notice daily tasks seem easier to manage, and anxiety decreases.
By reducing worry through writing, you’ll make healthier choices: better meals, more exercise, and deeper sleep. You won’t stay awake at night worrying about unfinished work or future problems anymore. So pick up any notebook today — even one that looks nice to you in a store. 40 Such a tiny habit could change your life toward greater calmness and order.
A. Writing mainly affects your body physically.
B. An easy method to fight stress is by picking up a pen.
C. Arranging words on paper makes your mind feel ordered.
D. Hold a pen now and start writing whatever comes to mind.
E. Talk about your writing with friends if you want deeper understanding.
F. Putting thoughts into words surprisingly improves how you feel mentally.
G. Your head is stuffed with news updates, endless tasks, fears, and worries.

I held onto the corner of my clothes, my palms sweating slightly as I hurried over to the toy shelf. My heart beat wildly — would “Lightning” still be there?
There, on the topshelf, was the silver-gray “Lightning” model airplane, sitting quietly. Its blue flame (火焰) patterns on the body looked almost alive, as if ready to shoot through the sky at any moment. When I gently turned the propeller (螺旋桨), it made a weak humming sound, like a real engine warming up. Every time I passed by the toy store, my feet would always stick here, as if glued to the floor.
“You’ve been standing here for five minutes,” Dad’s voice came from behind, making me jump. “This is the third time this week you’ve gotten stuck just passing by. Next time, I’ll let your brother come in with you to buy writing materials, so you won’t keep getting distracted.”
My heart sank. Chris, my older brother, hated it when I dawdled (磨蹭). He’d definitely tap his foot impatiently and rush me to leave quickly, leaving no time for me to even glance at “Lightning”.
The next day after school, Chris was indeed sent by Dad to be my “supervisor”. “Buy the notebook and then we’re leaving. Don’t go looking around aimlessly,” he warned as he handed me the change, his tone firm. But I held the money tightly in my fist, took a roundabout route to the “Lightning”. My fingertips shook slightly as they gently brushed the cold glass of the display case.
“Aren’t you being childish? You’re already in the third grade and still playing with models?” My brother’s voice suddenly popped up, making me turn around in a panic. I caught sight of him looking at me, but there was no anger in his eyes.
“It’s called Lightning,” I explained in a small voice, pointing eagerly. “Look at the sticker on the wing — it’s the supersonic (超音速) pattern they talked about in Aviation Knowledge. I know it costs over 300…our family won’t buy it…I just want to check if it’s still here.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Chris stared in the direction my finger was pointing for a while.
On Christmas morning, I found a long, thin box under the tree.

第二节(满分25分)
Chris stared in the direction my finger was pointing for a while. He leaned closer to the display case, looking at the price tag. “329 yuan,” he murmured, and then turned to me. “Let’s go to buy your notebook first.” His tone was softer than before. I nodded, unwillingly following him, but he didn’t rush me this time. On the way home, he asked, “That plane … does it really fly high?” I talked excitedly about its features, and he listened quietly, occasionally nodding.
On Christmas morning, I found a long, thin box under the tree. My heart raced as I tore off the wrapping paper. There it was — “Lightning”, with its silver-gray body and blue flame patterns. A note stuck to it read: “For my little aviation fan. Merry Christmas.” I ran to my brother’s room, holding the plane. He scratched his head, smiling awkwardly. “I saved my pocket money,” he said. I hugged him tightly, feeling the model’s cold metal against my cheek, warmer than anything else.

Text 1
M: How about going to the concert this evening?
W: Sounds great.
M: Perfect, I’ll pick you up at six twenty. It will take us half an hour to get there.
Text 2
W: The weather report said it’s going to rain tomorrow.
M: Oh, no. I dislike driving in the rain. And it’s a long way to drive to the farm. We’d better take a taxi.
W: Taking a taxi costs a lot. We’ll take the bus instead. The farm is within walking distance from the bus stop.
M: Good idea.
Text 3
M: My doctor finally allowed me to start working out again!
W: That’s fantastic news! Would you be up for joining me for a tennis game after Mr. Cooper’s class this afternoon?
M: Sure, I’d love to.
Text 4
W: Hey, it’s time to get up.
M: I want to sleep a little longer.
W: You shouldn’t have stayed up so late last night watching TV. I told you we had to get an early start this morning. You always don’t listen to me.
Text 5
W: It’s in the back on the left side. I can feel it whenever I chew something as soft as pudding.
M: Just open wide and lift your head back for me. Let me take a look…Yes, I see the tooth hole now. Does it hurt when I press here?
W: Ouch!
Text 6
M: I got locked inside my room last night!
W: “Locked in”? What do you mean by that?
M: My roommate assumed I’d gone out, so he locked the door behind him when he left.
W: Oh no! How did you manage to get out?
M: I screamed through the window and handed my spare key to a neighbor. He let me out.
W: That’s such a strange situation — usually people talk about getting locked out, not locked in!
M: Right? It’s pretty rare, but it happens. It just goes to show anything can happen!
Text 7
W: Hi, Andy, it’s Belinda. How are you settling in?
M: Hi! I absolutely love it here — this city feels perfect. Everything you need is within easy reach. For example, there’s a huge shopping mall with tons of stores, and a supermarket close by. Plus, there’s a modern sports center really close to my office. It’s ideal for me since I can go straight right after work whenever I want. Oh, and there are plenty of lovely outdoor cafés and restaurants nearby too.
W: That all sounds amazing! Is living here expensive though?
M: Not at all — surprisingly affordable actually.
W: Wow, that makes it even better! I’ll definitely come to visit sometime.
M: Fantastic! That would be perfect — we can explore everything together then.
Text 8
M: Are these your grand kids, Lily? I haven’t seen them for a while.
W: Yes, that photo was taken last spring.
M: Emma looks just like her mom. She still works at the art gallery, right?
W: Yes, she does. She’s actually traveling for work now — an exhibition in Paris.
M: Oh, really? How does she like it?
W: It was tough at first, adjusting to the time difference and everything. But she’s settled in now.
M: Good for her! And how’s Mark?
W: We’re worried about him. Because he has been under a lot of stress lately. His startup is growing, but he’s been burning the midnight oil. And heart issues run in his family.
M: What?
W: Yeah, his dad passed away a few years back due to heart problems.
M: Oh, that’s rough. Does he take care of himself?
W: He tries, but you know how it is.
Text 9
W: Good morning, Camping Bags and Tents, Oxford Street. How can I help you?
M: Hello. I was drawn to that bag displayed in your shop window yesterday. Can you tell me about it?
W: Oh, yes. That is our best-selling bag, the Weekender. A fantastic all-rounder!
M: How big is it?
W: It’s forty centimeters by sixty centimeters. A great size for a day hike.
M: Oh, I appreciate the information, but I think I need something bigger. I’m getting ready for a camping trip next weekend.
W: If that’s the case, you should see the Weekender Plus. It gives you much more space. That’s seventy by ninety, no sorry, sixty by ninety.
M: That looks better. Are there different colors?
W: The Weekender is only available in pink and grey. The Plus is available in red and green, or blue and white.
M: Blue and white catches my eye. Can you reserve one for me? I’ll come and get it on Saturday.
W: Certainly, sir. I’ll put it behind the counter for you. And what a perfect time to buy — this Saturday. The price is usually $300, but it’s on sale on weekends. You can get 20% discount of the original price.
M: Yeah, that’s why I’ll come on Saturday. Thank you very much for your help.
Text 10
M: I have been interested in doing family history research for many years, because we can learn more about ourselves by studying our family history. I first started by interviewing my oldest living relatives about their lives, and I recorded these interviews using my smartphone. Then, I wrote down the names of my parents and grandparents in a family tree chart. After that, I tried to fill in the missing information, including the birth and death dates, the birth places and the state of marriages and so on. I collected most of the records from government sources like the city office or other offices in charge of preserving these records. I also visited local churches where I was able to find other necessary statistics. Looking over land records and personal letters can also provide clues to your family’s past. Besides these sources, I also used the Internet to search for missing ancestors, and one such website is www. familysearch. org. These websites really help me a lot. Now, I’m writing a book about what I have collected right now on my family history. It’ll be published soon.
