2027年人教版选择必修3单元5 Review Useful Structures — Relative Clauses

Part 2 Discover the Rules
Read the examples carefully and find the rules yourself.
Activity 1 Restrictive or non-restrictive?
Pair A
(a) The poem that the teacher recommended yesterday is well worth reading.
(b) The poem, which the teacher recommended yesterday, is well worth reading.
(1) What is different in the punctuation?
(2) In (b), can we change which into that? Why?
(3) Which sentence gives extra information that could be left out?
Pair B
(a) Wordsworth's poems that are about nature are widely read in schools.
(b) Wordsworth's poems, which are about nature, are widely read in schools.
(1) In (a), does the speaker mean all of Wordsworth's poems or only some? How about in (b)?
(2) Complete: A restrictive clause has ________ (no / some) commas and tells us which person or thing. A non-restrictive clause has ________ commas and adds extra information. In non-restrictive clauses, we use which / who / whose, but never ________.
Activity 2 When must we use "that" instead of "which"?
Study these sentences and find the pattern.
1. Is there anything that touches you deeply in this poem?
2. The first poem that we will read in this unit is by Li Bai.
3. This is the most moving poem that I have ever read.

Complete the summary:
We use that when the antecedent is —
① an ____________________ (anything, everything, nothing, all…)
② modified by an ____________________ (the first, the last…)
③ modified by a ____________________ (the best, the most beautiful…)
④ modified by ____________________ (the only, the very…)
⑤ ____________________ (both people and things together)
⑥ after the question word ____________________
Activity 3 The tricky one — preposition + which / whom
Look at the two sentences. They mean the same thing, but the word order is different.
(a) This is the cottage which / that Robert Frost once lived in.
(b) This is the cottage in which Robert Frost once lived.
(1) Where is the preposition "in" in (a)? Where is it in (b)?
(2) In (b), can we use that after "in"? Why?
(3) Rewrite in the formal way: The poet who / whom you spoke to is a Nobel Prize winner.
→ The poet to ________ you spoke is a Nobel Prize winner.
Complete: When a preposition moves to the front, we use ________ for things and ________ for people. We never use ________ after a preposition.
