Years ago, when local public libraries faced severe budget cuts, many community volunteers jumped in to fill the gap. Clara, a retired documentary photographer, chose to run a tiny book-exchange shelf tucked away in a neglected city alley. She did not intend it to compete with official library services; rather, she hoped to restore casual, low-pressure book-sharing among neighbours who rarely interacted in fast-paced urban life.
At the beginning, progress was discouraging. Though Clara stocked the shelf with her own well-preserved collection, books vanished within days, not passed on to other readers, but taken away and kept for personal use. Some supporters urged her to abandon the project, arguing that city residents lacked the sense of mutual trust such a setup required. Instead of giving in to disappointment, Clara refused to write off all local citizen good will. She changed her strategy: she attached short hand-written notes inside each book, not scolding theft, but encouraging future readers to keep books circulating.
Gradually, a shift took place. People began returning volumes, adding their own used books, and even leaving brief notes of their own. The once-deserted alley turned into a quiet gathering spot. Passers-by would pause, browse selections, and occasionally exchange brief comments about literature. It never grew into a grand facility. Yet it delivered something far more valuable than book resources alone: it re-established fragile social bonds among strangers living in isolation within the same neighbourhood.
This modest experience makes a thought-provoking point about community building. Social connections cannot be engineered merely through facilities or policies. Trust and belonging have to grow slowly from small, repeated acts of mutual respect.
24. Why did Clara launch the book-exchange shelf in the alley?
A. To replace official library services.
B. To relieve overworked public libraries.
C. To recycle her personal book collection.
D. To revive relaxed neighbour interaction.
25. What can we infer from paragraph 2?
A. Clara blamed citizens for theft.
B. Clara was forced to quit due to failure.
C. Clara sought to revive the project via a revised strategy.
D. Clara accepted practical solutions from local volunteers.
26. What may be the content of the notes left by local residents?
A. Every cloud has a silver lining.
B. What goes around comes around.
C. Life is not always a bed of roses.
D. Fortune favours those who are well-prepared.
27. What message does the text convey?
A. Unity arises from public facilities.
B. Trust results from official backing.
C. Bonds grow from small sincere acts.
D. Literacy flows from book exchanges.

The neck is less than 1 per cent of the human body's surface area, but it plays an oversized role in our lives. In his new book, biologist Kent Dunlap argues that this small region connecting head and body is surprisingly central to the human condition. Its muscles control head movements and thus our attention; it facilitates speech and supplies the brain and body with blood, air and food. We decorate it with jewels and fragrance, and it plays a key role in love affairs and status signalling.
Yet the neck's importance is at odds with its essential weakness—— from the risk of permanent disability or fatal injury. Dunlap opens with the story of Isadora Duncan, the dancer whose swanlike figure revolutionised modern dance and who died in 1927 from choking after her scarf was caught in the wheel of a car. With this tension between“vitality and vulnerability” as his starting point, Dunlap explores how humans wound up with our type of neck and the remarkably many ways it matters to our survival and society.
The book's liveliness comes from Dunlap's curiosity that leaps through pages. The angles he finds on his subject are remarkable in number and variety, yet each inclusion is well argued and properly dealt with. For example, he quotes writer Nora Ephron, who famously felt bad about her neck as a“dead give-away” of ageing, and adds that the area is a“reliable reporter” of its owners —— from the implied nobility of a pearl necklace to the revelation of a bold tattoo (纹身). Consciously or not, we judge men by their preferred necktie knot and women on their decolletage (露肩领).
In recent years,“text neck”—— the strain from leaning the head over digital devices —— has emerged as a widespread concern, with potentially permanent health consequences. It proves Dunlap's point: this small“transition zone” represents both the strengths and weaknesses of our species. His book may turn heads for taking on such a modest topic—— but it will surely open minds, too.
28. What is Dunlap's central argument about the neck?
A. It is the most delicate part of the human body.
B. Its significance in human life contrasts with its size.
C. Its primary function is to facilitate speech and breathing.
D. Its cultural meanings outweigh its biological importance.
29. What does the underlined phrase“reliable reporter” mean in paragraph 3?
A. A scientific device for measuring neck surface area.
B. A trustworthy journalist covering demographic trends.
C. A medical instrument for detecting age-related diseases.
D. A visible indicator that reveals personal identity information.
30. Which of the following best describes the book?
A. Scholarly and entertaining.
B. Narrow yet wide-ranging.
C. Serious and conventional.
D. Thought-provoking yet controversial.
31. What can be the title of the book mentioned in the text?
A. The Neck: A Natural and Cultural History
B. Killers of Our Necks: Silk Scarves to Texts
C. Decoding the Neck: the Key to Our Vulnerability
D. Our Delicate Necks: How Evolution Shapes Human Weakness

Mark Zuckerberg recently observed that Americans have fewer than three friends but want fifteen. He wasn't admitting failure. He was promoting a product: his AI chat bots could fill the gap. The logic is elegant:technology will cure the isolation(孤立) caused by technology. It is also a closed cycle that leaves no room for real connection.
The real danger of chat bots is not that they are poor companions. It is that they are too good at being what we wish companions were. They never disagree, never grow bored, never question anything of us. Professor Nina Vasan calls this a“frictionless social bubble”—a conversation where your worldview is never challenged. Friction in real relationships is not a defect; it is the mechanism by which we discover that other people actually exist. Without it, conversation becomes self-appreciation, not connection.
And you don't need to be lonely or obsessive for chat bots to interpose themselves between you and the people around you. They offer on-demand conversation, appreciation, and advice that only other humans previously provided. Zuckerberg says people already use Meta AI to prepare for difficult conversations with bosses and loved ones. Reportedly, some therapists(治疗师) are taking things further, secretly feeding their dialogue with their patients into Chat GPT during therapy sessions for ideas on how to reply.
This is not a warning about some distant future. Companies are already releasing internet-connected dolls that converse with three year old. A parent reviewing one wrote that it felt like“a replacement for me.”Children raised by machines that never say no may never learn what being told no means—— or why it matters.
Chat bots enable something unprecedented: they allow you to talk forever to no one other than yourself. The mind desperately wants to connect with a person, and it will fool itself into seeing one in a machine. The question is not whether we can build better companions —— it is whether companionship without friction is companionship at all.
32. Why does the author call the“technology cures technology” logic a closed cycle?
A. It underestimates human adaptability.
B. It ignores technology's potential benefits.
C. It recycles the same failed social-media model.
D. It offers no genuine way out of social loneliness.
33. Nina Vasan may agree that the conversation with a chat bot is like .
A. a hall of mirrors
B. a one-way street
C. a connecting bridge
D. an inspirational debate
34. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. What convenience chat bots offer in daily life.
B. How chat bots cure loneliness and obsession.
C. How chat bots replace human-provided functions.
D. Why people prefer AI advice over human advice.
35. Which best represents the author's view on chat bots?
A. They should be banned for children once-and-for-all.
B. They are companionship in form but self-cheating in essence.
C. They are harmless entertainment that satisfies many parents.
D. They establish interpersonal interaction by fooling our minds.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
When someone spills their feelings to you via text, it can be hard to know what to say. Without the benefit of tone of voice and body language, misinterpretations can easily arise. 36 . Here's how to respond authentically and supportively.
Pause before you react
If someone messages you with something upsetting, before you type anything, take a deep breath and give yourself a moment to process the message. 37 . Instead, a brief pause allows you to approach the situation with empathy and clarity.
Use follow-up questions
38 . Then, ask them to share more about them. This will show them you' re listening, and it can also help them sort through their complicated feelings. For instance, if they say,“You never listen to me,” you might say,“Are there other times you felt I wasn't being a good listener?”
Resist the urge to fix
While it's natural to want to help solve the problem, offering undesirable advice can be counterproductive. 39 . Often, people simply need to be heard and understood rather than given solutions. If they do express a desire for advice, offer it gently and avoid being dismissive of their own ideas.
40
Sometimes the most compassionate thing you can do is ask what kind of support would mean the most to them. Suggest a phone call or an in-person conversation —— hearing a voice can make a significant difference in understanding and responding to emotions. And remember, after the initial exchange, a follow-up text shows you genuinely care about their well-being: a simple“How are you feeling today?” can make a big difference.
A. Go beyond the screen
B. Ask before you reach out
C. Give thoughtful responses that are specific to their problems
D. This is precisely why a carefully chosen response matters so much
E. Unless specifically asked, focus on listening rather than offering solutions
F. Read through the other person's texts and pick out words that seem important
G. Rushing into a response can lead to unintentionally hurtful misunderstandings

Nothing seems to be more charming than a Christmas puppy. The reality, 41 , is a mess. Holiday movies paint a sweet picture of this furry gift, yet real-life ownership seldom matches that ideal.
We knew all the reasons against it, yet 42 and got one anyway. We named him Huckleberry, and the real trouble began. Day and night, we struggled to manage his 43 , mopping up messes and guarding holiday decorations from his teeth. Even simple daily tasks became a heavy 44 .
Still, despite all the 45 , there is something right about a Christmas puppy. It teaches us what love really means. Love is not the picture-perfect moment 46 for family photos at Christmas. Instead, it comes after long nights in the freezing dark and many 47 moments for dog-owners like me: searching things such as“Is chocolate harmful to dogs?” We want the trouble, because the trouble is what makes the rest so 48 .
Similarly, what is true of dogs is true of people. Sacrifice might reflect our love, but it also 49 it; it is the investment that generates the return. This lesson 50 true in my own life. The years of care for my lost parents had been 51 , but had strengthened my love for them. We don't 52 know how much we care until we have taken care of them.
We speak of Christmas 53 as the peak of the holiday season. But in fact, it is a 54 of deeper love, love that is meant to last even after an empty space by the fire. A Christmas puppy embodies exactly that love. This is why we got a puppy, 55 all those sensible reasons not to —— the love it brings far outweighs the mess.

Sharon's cat Baby-Girl had been missing for six months. The small tabby (虎斑猫) disappeared from her parents’ house one summer when Sharon was moving between apartments. Whenever Sharon thought of her, she pictured Baby-Girl curled up inside the old decorative fireplace, where the cat would often settle for hours.
Her dad Bill, the family's“realist”, always prepared everyone for the worst.“She’ s either hit by a car or taken in by someone,” he would warn. But Sharon refused to give up. Baby-Girl had once been a stray, a tough little cat surviving all on her own. As weeks turned into months, Sharon still held the quiet belief that they would meet again.
Back home for Thanksgiving, Sharon was determined to look for her cat. She grabbed a cat carrier and asked Dad to drive her to the animal shelter. Dad agreed but reminded her with his familiar half-smile:“Be realistic. She has been gone too long. You won't find her.” After all,“I don't believe in miracles” was his favourite saying, even printed on his holiday shirt.
At the shelter, a staff member showed them rows of cages. Sharon checked every cat carefully, yet none was Baby-Girl. Dad told her the back room held newly-arrived cats and her cat would not be there. Still,Sharon insisted on having a look. She stepped inside and caught a familiar meow. In one cage sat a thin tabby with big green eyes and a white left hind paw. Thinner than before, it was unmistakably Baby-Girl. Tears welled up in Sharon's eyes. She opened the cage, and the cat nearly leaped into her arms.“Dad! It's Baby-Girl!” she shouted. Dad stood frozen, whispering in disbelief:“It can't be the same cat. Not after all this time.”
Back home, Baby-Girl purred and rubbed against everyone's legs, totally relaxed. But Dad still doubted its identity.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Dad insisted,“If she sits in her favorite spot, I' ll believe it's her.”
Days later, the family gathered to celebrate Thanksgiving when Dad came downstairs, wearing his new holiday shirt.

Sometimes they shake hands, but they don't hug very much. Secondly, french people don't really make small talk. They prefer to sit in silence and avoid asking them personal questions, especially about money. However, other difficult subjects such as politics and current affairs are welcome, even at dinner parties. Remember, it's the custom to turn up at least fifteen minutes late for your dinner parties, since the french are known for their relaxed way of life, it's a good opportunity to slow down and enjoy the moment you're going on holiday to france. Beauty at My Fingertips
For our school's "Labour at Our Fingertips"activity,I created an elaborate
red paper-cut plum blossom. When displayed in our class exhibition, this decorative
piece won plenty of praise from my classmates.
Equipped with fine-point scissors,I devoted two afternoons to the creation.I
traced the petal patterns onto crisp red paper first, then cut along the lines
slowly. Some curves turned out uneven,so I adjusted my angle and smoothed out jagged
bits little by little instead of restarting from scratch.
This experience drove home the essence of the saying "labour creates beauty":
beauty is never merely stumbled-upon,but patiently shaped withour own hands.Modest
persistent efforts can transform plain raw materials into something capable of
touching people's hearts.
第二节(满分25分)【参考范文】
Dad insisted,"If she sits in her favorite spot,I'1I believe it's her."Sharon
looked toward the old decorative fireplace -the very spot Baby-Girl had always
loved. The cat padded around the living room, sniffing at the sofa, then the bookshelf,
as if relearning every corner. For a long moment she seemed unsure. Then, drawn by
something deeper than memory, she walked straight to the fireplace, stepped inside,
and curled into a perfect ball, just as she used to.Sharon caught her breath.Dad
stood motionless, his lips pressed tight. Finally,he exhaled slowly and murmured,
“Maybe it really is her.”
Days later, the family gathered to celebrate Thanksgiving when Dad came
dowstairs, wearing his new holiday shirt.Everyone stared -gone was his old shirt
with "I don't believe inmiracles"across the front.Instead,he was wearing a brand-new
one that read:I BELIEVE IN MIRACLES!The room burst into laughter and cheers."What
changed your mind?"Sharon asked, grinning through happy tears.Dad picked up Baby-Girl,
who had once again settled in her fireplace spot, and held her close."This little
one did,"he said softly.Baby-Girl purred,as though she had never doubted it for
a moment.
