Some buildings can leave you wondering how on earth they were built. Read on for examples of creative buildings in the world.
Wonder Works, Tennessee
INSPIRATION: What if a laboratory was thrown into the air in an experiment and landed upside down?
Looking at the cracks, you might think “Is it about to collapse?” But it’s all an illusion (错觉). This indoor amusement park is actually pretty normal. The upside-down features are just for show. Inside are more than 100 hands-on activities.
Cube Houses, Netherlands
INSPIRATION: Trees in a forest, with each block being a tree.
The Cube Houses are a popular attraction, but they are also real houses so that tourists can accommodate here! The blocks have concrete foundations and floors with a wood living space on top. Shiny metal panels add visual appeal. The furniture is tailor-made to fit the odd angles where the walls meet.
Bubble Palace, France
INSPIRATION: “Habitology”, an idea that habitats could use nature’s flexible lines instead of straight lines and sharp angles.
This house may look like a space settlement, but it’s a 10-bedroom palace where travelers can stay shortly. Made of cave-like bubbles, it also has ponds, waterfalls, swimming pools, an outdoor theater that seats 500 people, and views of the Mediterranean Sea.

In the late 1990s, a family visited the school where I taught deaf students. They said they would be moving here and planned to send their deaf daughter to my school as a first grader. They were upset that their child’s kindergarten teacher told them not to have high hopes for her academically. Based upon assessment results, the teacher painted a bleak picture for their little girl’s future. Standing behind them was Katherine, a beautiful five-year-old with long hair and dark eyes. The whole time her parents were there, and she didn’t make a sound or use sign language, even when her parents prompted her.
After a few weeks with Katherine, I discovered I was dealing with a very bright, very strong-willed child. Although I was able to engage her in a variety of learning activities, writing was a constant struggle. I tried all kinds of trickery to interest her in writing. Every time the pencils came out, she would shut down and refuse to write.
One day Katherine got off her bus and stood in front of the school wailing. The staff members present did not know enough sign language to ask her why she was crying. Finally they quickly took her into the office where they handed her a pen and a notepad. Katherine wrote: “PAC BAK.”. Immediately the office staff realized she left her backpack on the bus. They summoned (召唤) the bus back to school and soon Katherine was reunited with her backpack.
That day Katherine discovered the power of the pen. From then on she had a new appreciation for writing. She is a young woman now and has become an excellent writer, public speaker and student leader. In the summer of 2008 I traveled to the National Association of the Deaf Conference in New Orleans and watched her perform competitively as Miss Deaf Colorado. Kathy keeps in touch and I especially treasure her e-mails with term papers attached. This young lady wields a very powerful pen!

Do you ever wonder why trees begin to bud (发芽) earlier in some cities? Scientists finally found the answer but it's not very pleasant. New science suggests a relationship between light pollution and the timing when trees produce buds, which signals the arrival of the spring season.
Light pollution is defined by the Lighting Research Center as the unwanted consequence of outdoor lighting such as street lights. Excessive (过多的) manmade light at night results in disturbed natural cycles, and also prevents the observation of stars and planets at night. But its effect on the environment goes beyond that.
By studying some trees, researchers found out that trees that are more exposed to artificial lighting at night bud up to 7.5 days earlier than those at the natural nighttime setting. And they found out that light had a more significant effect than temperature when the buds came out. The early budding may cause problems for insects, which feed on leaves, and the birds which then feed on them in turn. Professor Richard, who helped lead the research, explained that more than the budding of trees, the study implies the danger to the balance of the ecosystem. “At the moment, caterpillars are timed to hatch to make the most of the opportunities to feed on freshly budded leaves, and birds hatch in time to feed on the young caterpillar,” he said.
Migratory (迁徙的) birds are also negatively affected by light pollution. The glare might confuse them and make them lose their flying sense. The phenomenon might explain why some birds accidentally knock into buildings.
Such results stress the need to pursue studies that aim to measure the effect of light pollution. If the issue were left to continue, it is estimated that by 2100, spring would begin almost a full month earlier than it does today.
28.What will happen if there is too much manmade light?
A.People's eyesight will be damaged.
B.The ecosystem will likely lose its balance.
C.No stars or planets may be observed at night.
D.Animals' living habits may change suddenly.
29.How does the early budding affect insects or plants?
A.It will cause the rising number of insects.
B.It could lead to trees growing fewer leaves.
C.It may result in some insects going hungry.
D.It might push insects to hatch more slowly.
30.What does the author want to tell us in the last paragraph?
A.The effect of light pollution is destructive.
B.The spring of 2100 will become much longer.
C.Light pollution should be taken seriously.
D.A further study on light pollution is scheduled.
31.What is the suitable title for the passage?
A.Why spring comes earlier in some cities
B.Why light pollution needs to be studied
C.How trees' early budding takes place
D.How much light is “too much”
D
A study published by Whillans and her colleagues found that 48 percent of college freshmen in their second term at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver believed that their friends had made more friends than they had since school began. Thirty-one percent felt the opposite.
“Since social activities, like eating or studying with others, tend to happen in cafes and libraries where they are easily seen, students might overestimate (高估) how much their friends are socializing because they don’t see them eating and studying alone,” says Frances Chen, the study’s senior author and a professor in the UBC psychology department.
A second, smaller study they published at the same time shows that feeling left out made the students pretty unhappy. “This was surprising”, Whillans says, “because many high-achieving people—the ones most likely going to college—believe they’re better equipped than their peers (同龄人) to handle challenges. But when peers appear to be doing better socially, that can contribute to feelings that there’s something wrong with us.”
While this study did not look specially at the influence of social media, other studies have shown that the way people use social tools to present only the good side makes others feel lonely and separated. “Social media always gives us the idea that other people are more social than us,” Whillans says. “We often fail to communicate when we fail, and that might be bad for us and also for our social network.” In the new study, first-year students in the sample of more than 1,000 students reported having 3.63 close friends on average at UBC, but they believed their friends had 4. 15 close friends.
27. What did Whillans’ first study find?
A. Less college freshmen feel lonely.
B. Less college freshmen don’t like entering college.
C. More students believe their friends are more sociable.
D. More students think their friends’ school begins later.
28. What does Frances Chen think of students’ loneliness?
A. It is out of control.
B. It may be more common than thought.
C. Many students can handle it.
D. It leads to more social activities.
29. The underlined word “This” in paragraph 3 refers to the result that ________.
A. students like being left alone
B. students don’t like going to college
C. students feel upset about being missed out
D. students believe they’re better off than their friends
30. What is Whillans’ attitude towards social media?
A. Uninterested. B. Negative. C. Supportive. D. Hopeful.

第二节 语法填空(共10小题;每小题2分,满分20分)
Keeping a diary in English is one of the effective ways 56 (improve) our English writing ability.
Compared with other forms of writing, it is shorter and takes 57 (little) time. It can help us to develop the habit of thinking in English. If we persist (坚持) in this practice, gradually we’ll learn how to express ourselves in English. In keeping a diary in English, we certainly run up against many 58 (difficult). In the first place, it often happens that we have trouble 59 (find) appropriate words and phrases to give expression to our mind. Secondly, there 60 (be) many idiomatic ways of saying things in Chinese. And it is extremely hard for us to put them into English 61 (proper).
As far as I am 62 (concern), my suggestion is 63 we should always have a notebook and a Chinese-English dictionary within easy reach. Whenever something beats us, we can first put it down in our notebook and then consult our dictionary. We can also ask our English teacher 64 help, if necessary. In short, I believe that it is of great use to keep a diary in English for 65 development of our writing skills.

Once upon a time, there lived a poor but cheerful shoemaker. He was so happy that he sang all day long. The children loved to stand around his window to listen to him.
Next door to the shoemaker lived a rich man. He used to sit up all night to count his gold. In the morning, he went to bed, but he could not sleep because of the sound of the shoemaker’s singing. One day, he thought of a way to stop the singing. He wrote a letter to the shoemaker, inviting him over for a cup of tea.
The shoemaker came at once, and to his great surprise, the rich man gave him a bag of gold as a gift. The shoemaker took the bag and thanked the rich man. When he returned home, the shoemaker couldn’t wait to open the bag. He had never seen so much gold in his life! He sat down at his bench and began, carefully, to count it. The children watched through the window.
There was so much there that the shoemaker was afraid to let it out of his sight. So he took it to bed with him. But he could not sleep for worrying about it. So he got out of bed and went to hide it in the attic(阁楼),but he was not sure if that was a good place.
Very early in the morning, he got up and brought his gold down from the attic. He had decided to hide it up in the chimney(烟囱) instead. But after breakfast, he thought-it would be safer in the chicken house. So he hid it there. But he was still uneasy, and in a little while he dug a hole in the garden and buried his bag of gold in it.

Dear Lucy,
How are you? My name is Li Hua, whom you taught oral English when I was in Senior 1. Now our school asks me to invite you to come to our school to be an oral English teacher for the English Summer Camp during the summer vacation. Here are some details about the activity.
The camp will start from January 10 to 25,2017. You can come a few days before January 10. In the morning you will give three oral English classes so you are expected to get ready for different topics to communicate with the students. In the afternoon there are mainly outdoor activities such as having some picnics and visiting parks and museums, etc. You can also take the chance to travel more in China.
I hope you will accept the invitation and have a happy summer holiday.

[参考范文]
He was in no mood for singing and found it difficult to focus on his work. He was too worried about the safety of his gold. While working, he couldn't help running in and out again and again to see if his gold was all right. And he kept moving the bag from one place to another to keep it safe. What's worse, he lay awake all night because he was always trying to count the gold. Worst of all,the children no longer came to see him.
At last the shoemaker felt so unhappy that he took his bag of gold and ran next door to the rich man. He handed the bag of gold to the rich man the moment he opened the door."Please take back your gold," he said. "The worry of it is making me anxious all day and night. I would rather be a poor shoemaker as I was before." Before the rich man could say a word, the shoemaker had left. From then on, the shoemaker was happy again and sang all day long at his work. It is inner peace and satisfaction rather than wealth that really counts.
