It stops right near the Peters Building.” Then the first man said, “Oh, that’s on East 34th Street, not West 34th. It’s quite a distance from here. You must take the subway.” But the second man told Bill, “No, don’t go by subway. Take the crosstown bus.” Bill looked at his watch. Passage 1
(25-26高一上·河北唐山开滦第一中学·期中)My good friend, George, was influenced by his parents, who are some of the best examples of giving, whether they get paid or not.
When I was a little child, I joined George and his mom in going to Erin’s house, bringing food and daily supplies with us. Obviously, Erin’s family faced economic trouble and could hardly afford food. George and I took several bags of things to the door, rang the bell and ran off. Erin still doesn’t know to this day who did that. Since then, I’ve always given whatever I could afford to help the people in need.
You never knew what my act would lead the people in need to do. A few years ago, I came across a homeless man begging for money to get bread at a bus stop. I could have ignored him, but I felt sorry for him and pulled out my wallet. I only had $ 20 in my hand. I was just a college student. However, I handed him the money, and he promised me that he’d find a job to make a living. When I got on the bus, he smiled at me and said,“I’ll remember you forever!”I also smiled. It totally made my day, and I would also never forget his face. Later, I lent my phone to one boy to call his family and managed to help his worried mother find a job online.
Though an act of kindness toward anyone can seem like no big deal to me and cost me nearly nothing, I believe in the effects it can have on other people. Hopefully, they still have faith in humanity. It’s the kind of interaction that is more valuable than money. Since doing good is within our power, let’s help out more.

B. The request from George’s parents.

A. To call on people to do good.
B. To explain doing good costs nothing.
C. To advise people to remember others’ help.
D. To show interaction is as valuable as money.
4.What is the best title for the text?
A. Give to Get Paid

Passage 2
(25-26高一上·河北沧州泊头市八县联考·期中)Thanks to a high school robotics team, a tiny dog named Kanga-Roo who lost her front two legs at birth is walking on her own.
The tiny dog, called “Roo” for short, first made news when she was dropped off at the Heart of Louisiana Humane Society in late 2023. Without her front legs, she had to adapt (适应) to jumping on her back legs for moving around. So the Steel Eagles Robotics Team at Holy Savior Menard Central High School in Louisiana put their minds to work and began building a special type of wheelchair that gives Roo two wheels in place of her front legs. For the students, seeing their design work in real life was an exciting experience.
The team fitted Roo with her first wheelchair in October 2023 using a 3D printer. The dog ran into trouble while learning how to walk in the new setup, but she has adapted well. She has already outgrown her first wheelchair and is working on her second. The team will keep building new sizes until Roo is fully grown.
The students and the Humane Society members have been working to teach Roo how to use her wheelchair. While she hasn’t mastered it yet, she is getting close. “She was scared at first but she’s getting more comfortable in it and it has become a lot easier for her to move freely,” the organization’s president, Kristy Royall, said. “It’s wonderful to see technology used in such a caring way,” she added.
Kanga-Roo’s wheelchair is one of many projects the Steel Eagles Robotics Team has built for people or animals in need. According to coach Tonya Shepard, it is their goal to contribute to (做贡献) the community and do things that are actually helpful to the community.

Passage 3
(25-26高一上·河北沧州泊头市八县联考·期中)Sammie Vance was just named one of PEOPLE’s Girls Changing the World, and she is only 12 years old. The seventh grader from Indiana is collecting bottle caps to make them into buddy benches (伙伴长椅) for her school and neighborhood parks. But these benches are more than just for sitting; they’re to help kids find friends.
Sammie learned about buddy benches at a camp she attended one summer. At the camp there were benches set up for when a child felt lonely; they would sit down, which means that they are in need of a friend.
She said, “I’m like, ‘This would be really cool to have at my school.’” Then she sprang into action by meeting with her headmaster to present her idea.
Sammie used a cartoon picture that she created to show how a simple bench could help classmates understand when one of their own needed a friend. The adults were surely impressed by her idea but were also impressed with how she planned on making the benches.
Sammie and her mom Heidi found a company called Green Tree Plastics that could turn recycled (回收利用的) plastic caps into benches. These recycled benches cost much less than normal park benches and are good for the environment according to Sammie’s website.
Then, she got to work and held a community-wide event, asking members to donate (捐赠) their old bottle caps. The event alone collected 1,600 pounds (725 kilograms) of caps and with that, she created three benches for her school.
Sammie continued her efforts and enlarged her project to create more benches. Now officially called Sammie’s Buddy Bench Project, the project has a Facebook page for others to follow her journey and make bottle cap donations.
Today, Sammie has set up 200 recycled benches in schools, neighborhoods and even local community centers. She has no plans of stopping. “For me, it’s seeing people who need a friend — whether they’re 8 or 80 — because I’ve been lonely myself. I don’t want others to feel that way,” she told PEOPLE.

Passage 3
(25-26高一上·河北石家庄第二中学·期中)American mountaineer Jim Morrison made history this week when he put on his skis and carefully moved his way down one of Mount Qomolangma’s most dangerous mountain sides. He is the first person to ski the Hornbein Couloir, a high, narrow gully (陡坡) on the mountain’s North Face.
The groundbreaking adventure marked the completion of years of planning and training. Morrison had attempted (尝试) to ski the Hornbein Couloir twice before — once in 2023 and again in 2024 — but was unsuccessful.
This year, Morrison spent more than six weeks on Mount Qomolangma, getting used to the mountain and waiting for a suitable weather window. There were 11 other mountaineers with him. Around 6 a.m. on October 15, Morrison and his teammates began their climb. They reached the top at 12:45 p.m. After taking a few photos, most of the team began carefully climbing back. Meanwhile, Morrison got ready and started skiing.
The trip took him four hours and five minutes. At one point, he reached a point that was completely devoid of snow and ice, so he had to take off his skis and lower himself for about 650 feet. He had a short rest at Camp Three, and then kept going. When Morrison finally reached Camp One, he was in tears. “I’d attempted so much and faced so much danger, but I was alive,” he says.
Mountaineers have skied other routes (线路) on Mount Qomolangma, but never the Hornbein Couloir. Since it’s on the mountain’s north side, the Hornbein Couloir is often shaded from the sun. As a result, it remains covered in snow and ice well into the fall.
French snowboarder Marco Siffredi attempted the Hornbein Couloir in September 2002. But after he dropped into the gully, he was never seen again. Other attempts have been made since then, but no one was successful until Morrison.

Passage 1
(25-26高一上·河北NT20名校联合体·期中)For many high school seniors, graduation is a bittersweet moment, filled with excitement yet doubt. Recognizing this, Jason Mutterer, principal (校长) of Mansfield Summit High School in Arlington, Texas, made a special effort to offer lasting encouragement. He wrote a personalized handwritten letter to each of the 443 graduating students, inspiring them and reminding them of their uniqueness before this significant life milestone.
Mutterer handed out the notes along with diplomas (毕业文凭) at the graduation ceremony. “He teared up a bit. I knew it would happen. Then he mentioned the personal letters — 443 of them,” said graduate Eduardo Estrada to NBC DFW. “I couldn't believe he had written a letter to every student here. ”
Explaining his action, Mutterer recalled receiving a similar encouraging note in high school. “I still have a letter from my government teacher. I was supposed to be a fourth-or fifth generation farmer, but he told me I could go to college and succeed. Someone saw promise in me that I didn't see,” he said.
Having worked at the school for 23 years, Mutterer transitioned (转变) from a basketball coach to principal. “He didn't want to be seen just as a principal; deep down, he's a coach and teacher,” noted graduate Andrea Lozada. Though he never taught these seniors, he knew them well. The letters praised individual achievements, used nicknames, and wished them well at their future schools.
Each note included a $1 bill, aiming to inspire them to pass on kindness. “A single dollar may seem small, but $443 together can cover a car payment, electric bill, or new shoes,” Mutterer explained.
On Facebook, he wrote, “These 443 handwritten letters with a dollar are small acts of kindness. They can start a wave of positive change. No kindness is too small. Take Summit Love to a world that needs it—and you.”

Passage 2
(25-26高一上·河北沧州南皮县第一中学·期中)I love learning foreign languages. In fact, I love it so much that I like to learn a new language every two years. I am currently working on my eighth one.
When people find that out about me, they always ask, “What's your secret?” They want to know why they spend years learning even one language, never achieving fluency. They also want to know the secret of polyglots (通晓数种语言的人). And that makes me wonder, too. How do other polyglots do it? What do we have in common? I decided to meet other people like me and find that out.
I met Benny from Ireland, who told me that his method is to start speaking from day one. He learns a few phrases from a travel phrasebook and then goes to meet native speakers and starts having conversations with them right away. He doesn't mind even if he makes 200 mistakes a day, because that's how he learns, based on the feedback (反馈).
I also met polyglots who always start by imitating the sounds of the language, others who always learn the 500 most frequent words, and yet others who always start by reading about the grammar. If I asked a hundred different polyglots, I would hear a hundred different approaches to learning languages. Everybody seems to have a unique method to learn a language, and yet we all achieve the same result of speaking several languages fluently.
And as I was listening to these polyglots telling me about their methods, I suddenly realized that the one thing we all have in common is that we have simply found our own ways to enjoy the language learning process. We are no geniuses and we have no shortcuts to learning languages. We simply found ways to enjoy the process, to turn language learning from a boring school subject into a pleasant activity which we don't mind doing every day.
1.What can we know about the author from the first two paragraphs?
A. She is fluent in several languages.
B. She is more talented than other polyglots.
C. She often uses eight languages in her daily work.
D. She devotes herself to teaching foreign languages.
2.How does Benny learn foreign languages?
A. By practicing grammar rules.
B. By memorizing common words.
C. By talking with native speakers.
D. By imitating the sounds of languages.
3.What do these polyglots have in common?
A. They achieve success in schools.
B. They have great talent for language.
C. They are not afraid of making mistakes.
D. They find joy from the learning process.
4.What is the best title for the text?
A. The Secrets of Learning a New Language
B. Different Approaches to Learning English
C. Why Do Humans Speak So Many Languages?
D. How Should We Start Learning English at School?
Passage 3
(25-26高一上·河北枣强中学·期中)I have a strong belief that the pain is almost gone but the feeling of success will stay forever. I was among the 38,000 runners who took part in the marathon (马拉松赛跑), the largest event of its kind in Asia.
My decision to take part in the marathon was because of the insistence (坚持) of my wife, who had run the half-marathon before. This year, she wanted me to take part along with her. Unexpectedly, her application got refused while mine got accepted.
Though I had been into fitness training before, it seemed to be a challenging task to run 21 km. I started training about 10 weeks before the day. I had made up my mind to finish the run. So I tried my best to accommodate training into my busy schedule whenever I could.
What’s more, I remembered that four weeks into my training, my shoes were worn. I searched and spent a fortune on a new pair of shoes. However, right on the first day of running with them, I felt that they were not for me. I thought that my discomfort was because the shoes were new. Eventually, I gave up on them. I even tried looking for another new pair of shoes, but couldn’t find ones that were as comfortable as my old ones.
Finally, on 16th January 2021, I ran and completed the half-marathon. And I did it in my old shoes.
Now, when I think about it, it all seems so easy. All I had to do was to picture completing the run in good time in my mind.
What I have learned from the experience is that completing a marathon is like any other goal in life—largely a mind-over-matter phenomenon(现象). In other words, unless you believe you can reach your goal, you’ve lost even before you begin. No doubt, factors such as hard work, experience and talent help to a greater or lesser degree. But without your belief that you will get there, every goal remains difficult to achieve.
1.Why did the writer take part in the marathon at first?
A. It was the largest event of its kind.
B. He had been training for a long time.
C. His wife insisted on him taking part.
D. He had run the half-marathon before.
2.What can we learn from the text?
A. The writer’s old shoes were very expensive.
B. The writer was the best among all the runners.
C. The writer tried his best to do some marathon training.
D. The writer’s fitness training before was helpful to him in the run.
3.The writer says completing a marathon is like “a mind-over-matter phenomenon” because______.
A. belief can bring you success in a marathon
B. self-confidence is the primary factor in a marathon
C. it would be easy if you made up your mind to begin it
D. to win a marathon depends on your mind, not on your shoes
4.Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Practice Makes Perfect
B. A Running Lesson
C. The Pain before Success
D. Insist on Your Decision
Passage 4
(25-26高一上·河北保定五校·期中)In 1899, a wealthy couple built a summer house in Maryland. Over time, the building had different uses, but today, it is part of a public performing arts campus called Strathmore — complete with a nearby concert hall seating nearly 2,000 people — that has developed around that first building.
Jazz singer Christie Dashiell first came to Strathmore through its artist-in-residence program. Each year, this program selects six musicians between 16 and 32 years old and helps them with lessons, performances, and career advice.
“I left college having so much music,” Dashiell says. “I had written so much music and I had practiced so much music. But I didn’t know what an artist was and what life looked like.”
At Strathmore, Dashiell learned how to perform on stage, promote her music online, and plan concerts. And of course, she worked with other musicians to write songs and put on shows. It’s where Dashiell says she began to find not only her vocal talents, but the unique sonic signature that defines and distinguishes (区分) a jazz artist: her sound.
Dashiell gave several concerts at Strathmore. In 2016, she released her first album (专辑) in its small music room. Later, when she created her second album, Journey in Black, she performed in a bigger venue at Strathmore. Journey in Black, which came out in late 2023, tells stories of love, loss, joy and friendship — all of us can relate to that, It combines jazz with gospel, R&B, and hip-hop. That recording has been nominated (提名) for the Grammy Award for best jazz vocal album. It is her first Grammy nod.
“It feels good to be recognized in this way,” Dashiell says. “Very few artists are making music with the purpose of being nominated for a Grammy. That’s definitely not where I was coming from when I was making this music. I just wanted to make music that was honest and true in a way.”
1.What is a purpose of the artist-in-residence program at Strathmore?
A. To explore the century-old building.
B. To build a well-developed training system.
C. To offer practical education on music.
D. To select winners in a music competition.
2.After leaving college, Dashiell felt a sense of ______.

Ellie Hamby and Sandy Hazelip, both at the age of 81, inspired by Jules Verne’s novel Around the World in 80 Days, are on a mission to see all seven continents in just over two and a half months.
Their first stop was a location that was not easily accessible to even many experienced travelers: Antarctica. Getting to the southernmost continent first required crossing the Drake Passage, the famously rough waters. “For almost two days, we were rocking and rolling and slipping and sliding through the Drake Passage. It was just wild,” Hamby said. “But when we stepped foot on the ground of the Antarctic, we forgot all of that. The beauty of the Antarctic is just unbelievable — just breath-taking.”
Over the past three months, the pair have ridden camels in Egypt, met elephants in Bali, and observed the Northern Lights in Finland. For Hamby, the best part of the trip was not the beauty along the way. “We love all the sights that we saw, but the things that we remember the most are the people that we met,” she said. “We met some of the kindest and friendliest people in the world. We just have friends now all over the world.”
When it came to how their families felt about their journey, Hamby said her daughter Louise was not too concerned. “She just says, ‘Well, if Mom falls out of a hot air balloon in Egypt or off of the mountain ... That’s fine. She’s living the life she wanted to live, and I’m happy for her,’” Hamby said.
Hazelip hopes their story can inspire people of all ages. “Don’t sit in that chair and waste away,” Hazelip said. “Ellie has this wonderful saying; it goes ‘the world is a book and he who does not travel only reads one page’. So get up out of that easy chair, step out of your comfort zone, make some plans and live. Remember that age is only a number.”

A. Uncertain. B. Indifferent. C. Supportive. D. Concerned.

Passage 1
(25-26高一上·河北盐山中学·期中)Sixteen years ago a boy gave me an important gift. It was a smile. It was the early autumn of my first year at a middle school, and my old school was far away. As a result, no one knew who I was. I was very lonely, and afraid to speak to anyone.
Every time I heard the other students talking and laughing, I felt my heart break. I couldn’t talk with anyone about my problems. Then one day, when my classmates were talking happily with their friends, I was sitting at my desk unhappily as usual. At that moment, a boy entered the classroom. I didn’t know who he was. He passed by me and then turned back. He looked at me, with a smile.
Suddenly, I felt the touch of something bright and friendly. It made me feel happy and warm. That smile changed my life. I started to talk with other students and make friends. Day by day, I became closer to everyone in my class. The boy with the lucky smile has become my best friend now.
One day I asked him why he had smiled, but he couldn’t remember doing so! It doesn’t matter because all the dark days have gone. I believe that the world is what you think it is. If you think it is lonely, you might always be alone. So smile at the world and it will smile back.

A. At the age of 16.
B. After making friends with the boy.
C. In the first year at a middle school.
D. After becoming closer to everyone in the class.
2.Why was the smile an important gift?
A. Because the writer’s old school was far away.
B. Because the writer didn’t know who the boy was.
C. Because the smile didn’t mean anything to the boy.
D. Because it made the writer feel happy and warm.
3.Why didn’t the writer talk to anyone in her new school about her problems?
A. Because she was always unhappy.
B. Because she didn’t know anyone at the time.
C. Because she was in the first year at the junior high school.
D. Because she didn’t want her parents to worry about her.
4.How did the smile change her life?
A. She started to make friends.
B. She became the best friend of the boy.
C. Her parents didn’t worry about her any more.
D. She realized that she was lonely.
Passage 2
(25-26高一上·河北辛集中学·期中)I’m a seventeen-year-old boy preparing for my A Level exams at the end of the year. In the society where my peers (同龄人) and I live, we tend to accept the rat race values. As students, we want to get good grades so that we can get good jobs. I enjoy studying and have consistently received A’s in my classes. There was a year when I finished first in my class in the final exams. It was a great accomplishment.
Another one I am pleased with is that I managed to improve the relationship between Mum and Dad. Dad was a successful businessman who was rarely at home. Mum was a housewife who always felt bored and constantly nagged (唠叨) him to let her go to work. Their constant arguing bothered me, so I advised Dad that Mum would be better off with a part-time job. He agreed, and their relationship has improved since then.
My most proud achievement, however, is my successful work in the local old folks’ home. My grandparents had raised me since I was a child. I wept (哭泣) bitterly when they died. Unlike many of my classmates, I do not take part in my school's community service to earn points. I enjoy my voluntary work and believe I’m contributing to a worthwhile cause. This is where I can help. I talk to the elderly, assist them with their daily life, and listen to their problems, glory days and the hardships they experienced.
Last year, I hosted a successful New Year party for the elderly and they enjoyed a great time. Many expressed a desire to attend another party the following year. When I reflect on my accomplishments, I’m especially proud of my service at the old folks’ home, so I hope to study social work at university and work as a social worker in the future. I wish to be more skilled in attending to the less fortunate as well as find great satisfaction in it, after all.
1.What can be inferred about the author from the first paragraph?
A. His good grades got him a good job.

A. The request from Erin.
B. The request from George’s parents.
C. His childhood experience of doing good with George.

A. By giving reasons.
B. By giving examples.
C. By making suggestions.
D. By making comparisons.
3.What is the author’s purpose in writing the last paragraph?
A. To call on people to do good.
B. To explain doing good costs nothing.
C. To advise people to remember others’ help.
D. To show interaction is as valuable as money.

1.What did the robotics team do for the dog Roo?

1.What was Jim Morrison’s groundbreaking achievement?
A. He skied the Hornbein Couloir twice.
B. He spent over six weeks getting to the top.
C. He reached the top of Mount Qomolangma.
D. He became the first Hornbein Couloir skier.
2.What does the underlined part “devoid of” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Full of. B. Covered by. C. Free from. D. Mixed with.
3.Which can best describe the skiing route of the Hornbein Couloir?
A. Most popular.
B. Highly challenging.
C. Beginner-friendly.
D. Sun-bathed.
4.Why does the author mention Marco Siffredi in the last paragraph?
A. To prove Marco’s bravery.
B. To honor this famous snowboarder.
C. To show Morrison’s success was hard-won.
D. To introduce the history of mountain skiing.
【答案】1. D 2. C 3. B 4. C

【答案】1. A 2. C 3. D 4. A

【答案】1. C 2. C 3. B 4. B

That recording has been nominated (提名) for the Grammy Award for best jazz vocal album. It is her first Grammy nod.

(25-26高一上·河北盐山中学·期中)Does adventure have an age limit? Two close friends have given a negative answer to the question.
1.Which words can best describe Hamby and Hazelip’s journey to Antarctica?
A. Adventurous but wonderful.
B. Boring and uneventful.
C. Well-planned and smooth.
D. Romantic but fruitless.
2.What was the most unforgettable part of the trip for Hamby?
A. Seeing beautiful scenes.
B. Meeting wonderful people.
C. Experiencing different cultures.
D. Having her best friend’s company.
3.What was Louise’s attitude to her mother’s journey?
A. Uncertain. B. Indifferent. C. Supportive. D. Concerned.
4.What message does Hazelip most want to give us?
A. It’s never too old to learn.
B. A friend for life is a friend indeed.
C. Seeing the world is not a must for the old.
D. It’s never too late to live life to the fullest.
【答案】1. A 2. B 3. C 4. D

B. He refuses to compete with his peers fiercely.
C. His views on social values are well known.
D. He is content with his scholastic achievements.
2.Which role does the author play in his parents’ relationship?
A. A helper. B. A judge. C. A monitor. D. A supporter.
3.What is the greatest accomplishment for the author?
A. The contribution to volunteering.
B. The success in exams.
C. The recovery of confidence in life.
D. The work in community service.
4.Why does the author want to major in social work at university?
A. To gain a well-paid job.
B. To give his life a purpose.
C. To meet his grandparents’ expectations.
