(25-26高一上·河北六校联合体·期中)The Mid-Autumn Festival, celebrated on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month, is one of the most important traditional holidays in China. It is a time for family reunions, much like Thanksgiving in the West. The festival’s core themes are unity, harmony, and giving thanks for the harvest.
The most iconic symbol of the festival is the mooncake, a rich, round pastry typically filled with sweet bean paste or lotus seed paste and salted egg yolks. The round shape symbolizes completeness and family reunion. Under the bright full moon, families gather to enjoy mooncakes, admire the moon, and share stories.
However, traditions are evolving. While the essence of family remains central, new customs are emerging. For instance, with many young people working far from home, virtual family gatherings via video call have become common. Eco-friendly and health-conscious mooncakes with less sugar and innovative fillings are also gaining popularity.
Despite these modern twists, the spirit of the Mid-Autumn Festival remains unchanged. It continues to be a powerful cultural force that strengthens family bonds and connects Chinese people worldwide to their heritage.

A. To celebrate the beginning of autumn.
B. To encourage the eating of mooncakes.
C. To honor the ancient Chinese poets.
D. To promote family gathering and harmony.
2.Why is the mooncake round in shape?
A. Because it is easy to make and carry.
B. Because it represents the full moon and completeness.
C. Because it is a tradition from Western countries.

3.What is a modern change in the celebration of the festival?
A. The festival is no longer considered important.
B. Families have stopped eating mooncakes.
C. Virtual reunions are used to connect distant family members.
D. People only celebrate it with their friends instead of family.
4.What can be inferred from the passage about traditional festivals?
A. Their forms may change, but their core values can remain.
B. They are becoming less popular among young people.
C. They are resisted by modern society.
D. Their customs never change over time.
【答案】1. D 2. B 3. C 4. A

Passage 1
(25-26高一上·河北六校联合体·期中)Artificial intelligence (AI) is no longer a concept of science fiction; it is rapidly changing our daily lives. From voice assistants like Siri and Alexa to recommendation systems on Netflix and Taobao, AI is here to make our lives more convenient. However, like any powerful tool, it comes with its own set of challenges.
One major benefit of AI is its efficiency. It can process vast amounts of data much faster than any human, leading to breakthroughs in fields like medical research and climate forecasting. Passage 2
(25-26高一上·河北保定唐县第一中学·期中)Black Friday isn’t what it once was. Less than 15 years ago, it was common for people to wake up at early hours to drive to a store, where they would stand in line, waiting for the doors to open in order to get the best deals.
Those people stay, but not in the numbers they used to, thanks to online shopping. But as AI becomes entrenched in people’s habits, it could have an increasingly large role in Black Friday.
A growing number of buyers will be depending on AI to help them find deals. Some 33% of the people in a 2025 survey said they plan to use AI as part of their holiday shopping double the number who did last year. Many say the tech could help them with gift ideas and product discovery. A separate study from another marketing platform (平台) found that 56% of buyers say they’ll use AI tools among black Friday.
AI can do a lot more than help people think of creative gifts, of course. GenAI can research prices and recommend the best deal, in some cases even buying the products for you. And a growing number of people are taking advantage of that. Traffic from AI platforms to retail (零售) sites in July was up by 4,700%. And the company says there will be an increase in AI usage of between 515% and 550% this holiday season, compared to 2024.
To use AI for finding deals, first make a clear list of what you want to buy. Be very specific (确切的) about the product details when asking the chatbot. For example, if you want a computer, mention the exact model and your preferences. The AI will then search for the best prices and may also suggest cash-back apps. However, always check the results on the store’s website yourself, as prices can change quickly. This method saves you time and makes holiday shopping easier.

Passage 2
(25-26高一上·河北NT20名校联合体·期中)Sleeping in a noisy room isn’t just distracting (使人分心的) — it can also harm your health. While researchers have known for decades that long-term loud noises are harmful, it’s only recently been recognized as a widespread problem.
A new review by researchers from Germany and Denmark examined how noises, such as airplanes or jackhammers, affect (影响) our hearts. Most obviously, loud sounds can wake you up. But even if you don’t remember the noise or leave your bed, it can still harm your body in ways you may not notice.
“Noise is not just causing annoyance, but it actually makes us sick,” said Dr Thomas Münzel, a professor at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. “Regardless of where the sound is coming from, if it gets louder than 60 decibels (分贝), it can increase the risk of heart disease.”
When our body hears these noises, our body feels stress. In this case, these sudden and unexpected noises cause hormones (荷尔蒙) to speed up and eventually impair the heart. Although the chance that a single noise will affect you is unlikely, it’s the continuous contact with the sound that can finally affect you.
“But our heart health isn’t the only cause for concern. Long-term noise may also raise the risk of other diseases such as type 2 diabetes, depression, and anxiety disorders,” he warns. In the future, Münzel plans to examine how noises from cars, planes, and other vehicles affect the brain. But despite the amount or the depth of research he leads, it’ll need help from politicians to improve the effect of noise on our health. “Politicians have to take into consideration, in particular, the new findings,” Münzel said, “As for airplane noise and airports, it is important to make new laws and set new lower noise limits that protect people living close by the airport instead of the owners of the airport.”
1.What is the most obvious effect of loud noises according to the new review?
A. They may wake people up at night.
B. They can make the brain stop working.
C. They will certainly cause heart disease.
D. They help people remember things better.
2.What does the underlined word “impair” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Lose. B. Protect. C. Improve. D. Damage.
3.Whom does Münzel give advice to in the end?
A. Doctors. B. Researchers. C. Lawmakers. D. Airport workers.
4.What is the best title for the text?
A. How Noise Affects Our Health.
B. Where People Sleep Well at Night.
C. Why Loud Sounds Are Annoying.
D. When People Should Go to Sleep.
【答案】1. A 2. D 3. C 4. A

Passage 1
(25-26高一上·河北保定五校·期中)About 4,700 years ago, King Djoser, the first ruler of Egypt’s Third Dynasty, built a pyramid in Saqqara, an ancient burial site in Egypt.
No one knows exactly how the pyramid was built. It took millions of massive blocks. Some of those blocks weighed up to 2,500 kilograms. Experts have proposed several techniques-including ramps and cranes — to move such heavy stone blocks. They have also thought about rope-and-pulley devices and wooden rollers.
Researchers now suggest that ancient people used a water-powered system to construct this pyramid. How? Builders would have controlled flows of water into and out of a large shaft (竖井) inside the pyramid. The water’s movement would have lifted and lowered a platform that carried building stones to higher levels.
This idea comes from a study led by Xavier Landreau, a scientist who researches ancient technology. The team found that a branch of the Nile River once flowed near 31 pyramids, including Djoser’s. It’s dried up now. But boats carrying workers and building blocks could have traveled this branch of the Nile between 3,700 and 4,700 years ago. Landreau believes designers of Djoser’s pyramid developed techniques for controlling water flow.
Landreau’s team created a computer model using data from the pyramid, underground waterways, and satellite images of the region. The model also included a nearby structure called Gisr el-Mudir, which may have collected rainwater. During heavy rains, this area might have turned into a lake, sending water into the pyramid’s shaft. Inside the shaft, a huge wooden float (浮子) may have been connected to ropes and pulleys. When water filled the shaft, the float would rise, lowering a platform to pick up stones. As the water drained (排空), the float would sink, pulling the platform and stones upward.
Not all experts agree with this idea. Kamil Kuraszkiewicz, an Egyptologist at the University of Warsaw in Poland, questions whether the lake Gisr el-Mudir existed, as ancient records do not mention it. “Building the water-powered system,” he says, “would have required much more effort than to move the stone blocks using just manpower.”
1.What can we know about building the pyramid?
A. Scientists have reached an agreement on it.
B. Few stone blocks were transported by boat.
C. There’s no widely accepted explanation for it.
D. Rope-and-pulley devices were the main method.
2.What does Landreau’s study find?
A. Waterpower likely gave a big lift to the pyramid builders.
B. The branches of the Nile River were once badly polluted.
C. The 3D model offers insights into the life in ancient times.
D. Pyramid designers developed techniques for fighting floods.
3.What does the author want to explain in paragraph 5?
A. The exact purpose of Gisr el-Mudir.
B. How the water-powered system works.
C. The discovery of an underground river.
D. Why Djoser’s pyramid was constructed.
4.What is Kamil’s attitude towards the new finding?
A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Uncaring.
【答案】1. C 2. A 3. B 4. B

Passage 2
(25-26高一上·河北保定五校·期中)A new study looked at data from more than 10,000 12- and 13-year-olds and their parents, who were asked about their screen-use habits, including texting, social media, video chatting, watching videos and surfing the Internet. The researchers also asked if their screen-use caused problems, like struggling to stop using screens or having trouble with school and daily life.
One key finding stood out: One of the biggest factors of how much time kids spend on screens — and whether that use is problematic — is how much parents themselves use their screens when they are around their kids.
“It’s really important to role-model screen behaviors for your children,” says Jason Nagata, lead author of the study. “Even if teens don’t think they are influenced by their parents, the data shows they are.”
“Instead of beating ourselves up about it,” says Jenny Radesky, a researcher at the University of Michigan, “it’s important for parents to realize that just like kids, we are open to the draws of technology that is purposely designed to keep us scrolling (浏览).”
But even if parents are fighting against bigger forces designed to keep us glued to screens, that doesn’t mean we are completely helpless. Nagata’s research also looked for solutions that worked best to limit screen-use specifically among teenagers because we tend to see kids spending a lot more time on social media once they hit their teenage years.
Keeping meal times and bedtime screen-free helps kids spend less time on screens. Nagata’s earlier research also found that keeping screens out of bedrooms helps kids sleep better. Another key point: When parents use screens too much, kids notice that. Teens often feel their parents are distracted (注意力分散的) and unavailable because they are focused on their own phones. Given the design of technology, Radesky says the message shouldn’t be to blame (指责) the parents. The message should be to talk with your kids about why you feel so pulled in by screens.
1.What were the parents and kids asked to do during the study?
A. Record their daily lives.
B. Answer some questions.
C. Send texts to each other.
D. Have a chat with friends.
2.Who does the study show are a bigger influence on kids’ screen behaviors?

(25-26高一上·河北辛集中学·期中)It can be incredibly difficult to encourage ourselves to go for a run during winter, particularly when it’s wet and windy outside. But new research has found that even a super-quick run could have great health benefits. In fact, it seems that just a 10-minute session will not only make us feel better, but could actually improve brain health, too. Now, we all know that exercise can improve mental and physical health in many ways.
But when it comes to mental well-being, there’s been relatively little research done on the specific benefits of running, compared with other physical activities, such as cycling. So this was something put to the test during a recent study. Researchers from University of Tsukuba in Japan asked participants (参加者) to run on a treadmill (跑步机) for just 10 minutes. They then had to take a Stroop Color and Word Test which is used to measure reaction time in brain processing. Results showed there was a highest point in self-reported pleasure and an increase in degree of activity of the brain.
In other words, runners were found to have an increase in blood flow in the part of the brain that’s associated with dealing with functions and controlling mood (情绪). Researchers then compared these results to a similar study on cycling, which also showed improved cognition (认知), but no mood improvement. Therefore, it seems various types of exercise can make us feel differently.
The authors noted, “Given exercise is medicine, the effects of drugs differ depending on the type of drug, and different types of exercise such as running and cycling should be observed to have different effects on mental health and brain functions as well.”
So pushing ourselves to get outside for a run really will make us feel better, probably more than other fitness activities. And these findings show that we don’t necessarily need to do a lot of exercise to feel the benefit of it.
1.What did the new research find?
A. Running fast benefits all of us.
B. Running is the best exercise.
C. A short time run can be beneficial.
D. A healthy mind encourages us to run.
2.How did the researchers get the result?
A. By using different drugs on participants.
B. By interviewing some sportsmen.
C. By collecting information on the Internet.
D. By doing experiments and comparisons.
3.Which is related to our happiness?
A. Cycling. B. Medicine. C. Blood flow. D. Colors.
4.What is the main idea of the text?
A. We should go for a run in winter.
B. Running really benefits us mentally.
C. We don’t need a lot of exercise.
D. Running on a treadmill is better than running outside.

Passage 1
(25-26高一上·河北保定河北定州中学·期中)When it comes to lowering blood pressure, studies have typically shown that aerobic (有氧的) exercises are best. Recent research suggests another type of physical activity is worth including as an effective tool to prevent and treat high blood pressure.
Exercises that engage muscles without movement, such as wall squats and planks, may be best for lowering blood pressure, according to a large study published in July, 2023 in the British Journal of Sports Medicine.
This type of training is known as isometric exercise, according to the Mayo Clinic. Isometric muscle action happens when muscles contract but do not visibly change length, and the joints involved don’t move, facilitating stability of the body. Isometric exercises can be done with weights or without, just relying on the body’s own weight.
“These findings provide a comprehensive data-driven framework to support the development of new exercise guideline recommendations for the prevention and treatment of high blood pressure,” said study coauthor Dr. Jamie O’Driscoll in a news release.
The researchers looked into randomized controlled trials that had reported the effects of exercise interventions, lasting two or more weeks, on blood pressure between 1990 and February 2023. From a review of 270 trials with 15,827 participants, the researchers found that among HIIT (high intensity interval training), isometric exercise, aerobic exercise, dynamic resistance training and a combination of the latter two, isometric exercise led to the greatest reductions in blood pressure.
It’s also important to note that there are other lifestyle changes as well as exercise that can benefit your blood pressure. These include keeping to a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet, cutting down on salt, not drinking too much alcohol and ensuring that you continue to take any prescribed medication.
More research is needed to determine exactly why isometric exercises might be better for lowering blood pressure than other types of training, the authors said.
1.What does the underlined part “isometric exercise” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Exercise that is done with extra weights.
B. Exercise that involves visible muscle contraction.
C. Exercise that focuses on stability of the body.
D. Exercise that engages muscles without movement.
2.How did the researchers carry out the study?
A. By providing statistics.
B. By interviewing experts.
C. By doing experiments.
D. By making comparisons.
3.What does the author suggest the future studies about isometric exercise focus on?
A. Exploring the reasons for its effectiveness.
B. Demonstrating its influences on mental health.
C. Assessing its suitability for different populations.
D. Determining its long-term impacts on blood pressure.
4.What is the text mainly about?
A. The benefits of aerobic exercises.

Passage 2
(25-26高一上·河北NT20名校联合体·期中)Artificial intelligence (人工智能), or AI in short, is the science of giving computers and machines ability to think and work like humans. AI scientists and engineers have made a lot of cool technologies.
AI is rapidly catching up with the human ability to read faces. As a result, facial recognition is used a lot in the world. Chinese police use this technology to find out criminals (罪犯). Once they caught a criminal when he attended a concert. It also checks the ID of ride-hailing (网约车) drivers and lets people pay for things with a smile. AI is also used in self-driving cars, which are believed to be the future of driving. Most drivers may wave or nod at passers-by to let them cross the street, but self-driving cars don't have this ability. Car makers are testing a light signal system to help them “speak” to humans. The system can show what self-driving cars will do. For example, if a driverless car is giving way, it will flash two white lights side to side. A rapidly flashing light tells passers-by that the car is about to speed up.
Service robots also show you how powerful AI is. Imagine this — you come back home from school and your robot housekeeper is waiting for you at the door. After dinner, it teaches you to play the piano, just like a real music teacher. Such thoughts will soon happen in the real world. In the future, more and more service robots will become good home helpers.
AI is so powerful that it can help human beings and even replace us in many jobs. But while we enjoy its convenience, we also need to think about how to use it wisely — like protecting personal information and making sure it serves people in a safe and fair way.
1.How does the author mainly develop paragraph 2?
A. By comparing AI with human intelligence.
B. By explaining the history of AI technology.
C. By giving some examples of AI in daily life.
D. By describing the difficulties in building AI.
2.What do we know about the service robots?
A. They mainly work in schools.
B. They are very expensive to buy.
C. They are already in many homes.
D. They can make life easier for people.
3.What problem about AI does the author worry about?
A. Its high cost.
B. Its effect on safety.
C. Its mistakes in daily life.
D. Its popularity on social media.
4.Where is this text probably from?
A. A novel.
B. A travel website.
C. A guide.
D. A science journal.

(25-26高一上·河北沧州南皮县第一中学·期中)Can you survive an unannounced storm? Although there is expert broadcasting and we are equipped with cellphones, there are still some examples when the violent weather takes us by surprise.
While most Atlantic hurricanes form off the coast of Africa giving plenty of early warning, sudden Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico hurricanes form and move rapidly in less than a day’s time, endangering everyone and everything in their path.
There have been oil workers trapped off the coast when sudden storms appeared. Field archaeologists have been stuck in seaside areas without storm warnings. A few decades ago, a Texas National Guard group was trapped on the beach by rain-forced flooding and had to ride out a major hurricane during a training exercise. There’ve been a few cases where travelers were trapped on an island or in a seaside area and unable to escape in time.
Escaping from the storm-threatened areas is generally a choice for most of us - but not for all. Each year thousands of islanders across the Caribbean face the danger of hurricanes without a public shelter to hide in. Most ride out the storm in their homes.
But there are a few things you can do to prepare yourself for some unexpected emergencies. Being prepared for the unexpected may be your best and only defense. If you’re headed outdoors for a few days or weeks, you should always carry a flashlight (手电筒) with extra batteries, a GPS device (装置), and a basic medical box. If you’re traveling in your car, remember you may suffer from high winds. You’d better not stay inside to avoid being blown away along with your car. Keeping your head and your courage up is crucial to survival in any type of danger. Let common sense guide you and always be prepared for the worst.

Passage 1
(25-26高一上·河北沧州泊头市八县联考·期中)Are you a fan of spending your lunch breaks in an urban (城市的) park? Or do you walk your dog around it each morning and evening? Well, we have good news: spending just 20 minutes in a park every day will make you happier and less stressed — whether or not you’re exercising while you’re there.
Two new studies have shown the benefits of spending time in parks. The latest, from the University of Michigan, suggests spending at least 20 minutes walking or sitting in a place where you’re in contact with nature greatly lowers stress levels. Lead researcher MaryCarol Hunter said, “You don’t have to travel to the wild lands. Getting out of an office building and sitting next to a tree can be enough.”
In a separate study from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, researchers found people who visited their local urban parks felt happier. “Overall, we found park visitors reported an improvement in emotional (情绪的) well-being after the park visit,” said lead researcher Hon Yuen. “We did not find that levels of physical activity were related to improved emotional well-being. Instead, we found that time spent in the park was related to improved emotional well-being.”
The results are perhaps unsurprising — many studies have highlighted the benefits of nature on a person’s emotional health. A review of nature treatments for emotional health care found that nature-based activities contributed to a reduction in levels of anxiety and stress.
Meanwhile, a separate study by King’s College London researchers found being outdoors, seeing trees, hearing birdsong, looking at the sky, and feeling in contact with nature were connected with higher levels of emotional well-being. In some cases, these benefits influence people positively for up to seven hours afterwards.
All of these studies show the need to design greener cities for the future and protect our parks.
1.What does MaryCarol Hunter mean in paragraph 2?
A. Wild lands are disappearing rapidly.
B. Urban nature can be beneficial enough.
C. Traveling in wild lands can be dangerous.
D. Office buildings are the main cause of stress.
2.What is the key finding of the University of Alabama study?
A. Larger park areas lead to greater happiness.
B. Physical activity is key to emotional health.
C. Park visits help improve emotional happiness.
D. Dog walking is preferred among park activities.
3.What is the author’s attitude towards nature’s lasting effects?
A. Doubtful. B. Unfavorable. C. Positive. D. Uninterested.
4.What is the best title for the text?
A. The History of Urban Park Design
B. Exercise Matters: A Guide to Health
C. Scientists’ Advice on Stress Reduction
D. New Studies: Why Parks Make You Happier

Passage 2
(25-26高一上·河北石家庄第二中学·期中)A new study published on Aug. 20th in the journal Science shows that far fewer Americans are reading for pleasure than 20 years ago. Researchers from the University of Florida and University College London surveyed more than 236,000 people between 2003 and 2023. They found that the share of Americans who read for fun on a given day dropped from 28 percent in 2004 to 16 percent in 2023.
According to Jill Sonke, a co-author of the study, this is not just a small drop — it’s an ongoing decline, calling the results “deeply alarming”. She explained that reading for pleasure has always been a simple and effective activity to spark(激发) creativity and improve your overall well-being.
However, the decline was not equal for everyone. The researchers found bigger drops among African Americans, people in the countryside and those with lower income or education. Women still read more than men, but rates(比率) fell for both groups. “The people who could get the most for their health are actually getting the least,” said co-author Daisy Fancourt, according to The Guardian.
Why is this happening? There are different reasons. Sonke pointed to digital culture, economic worries and little free time. In an NPR interview on Feb. 20th, hosts Alisa Chang and Brittany Luse explored the topic further. Luse said she had spoken with writer Elaine Castillo, who said that social media companies have taken our attention, pushing people toward screening and social media instead of books. Luse also shared comments from Abdullah Shihipar, a researcher at Brown University, who pointed to studies showing that reading on screens leads to weaker thinking and understanding.
Others point out differences in different areas. Kate Laughlin, an executive director of the Association for Rural and Small Libraries, told the Los Angeles Times that when you say “reading for pleasure”, you mean that reading is fun. If someone struggles with the act of reading and understanding the words, that’s not fun; that feels like work.
1.What is the main finding of the new study?
A. Economic worries limit free time.
B. Social media replace reading habits.
C. Pleasure reading has declined greatly.
D. Screen reading weakens deeper thinking.
2.What does Jill Sonke think of the new finding?
A. It is worrying.
B. It is acceptable.
C. It is no surprise.
D. It won’t last long.
3.Which group saw a more obvious drop in reading?
A. Young adult readers.
B. Habitual library users.
C. Those with higher education.
D. People from disadvantaged groups.
4.What is listed as a reason for the reading decline?
A. The high cost of living.
B. The rise of social media.
C. The loss of reading skills.
D. The shortage of new books.
【答案】1. C 2. A 3. D 4. B

Passage 1
(25-26高一上·河北枣强中学·期中)The UK is dealing with major river issues this year. A report by the Angling Trust says this spring was the hottest and driest ever recorded, causing serious pollution in many rivers. This is especially worrying because healthy rivers are important for drinking water, wildlife, and outdoor activities.
Only 14% of the country’s rivers are in good health. The high temperatures have made chemical pollution worse, showing that climate change is putting “heavy pressure” on Britain’s waterways.
From March to June, the UK experienced extremely hot and dry weather, leading to severe ecological impacts on rivers. With temperatures higher than normal and significantly reduced rainfall, river water levels dropped sharply. This concentrated pollution from farms, urban runoff and treated wastewater worsened water quality. The results of low oxygen level, high temperatures and increased poison have caused mass fish deaths — 87 incidents reported by the Angling Trust so far this year. In extreme cases, such as the River Teme and River Redlake, emergency fish rescues were required to prevent further losses.
A study by a water testing team also found that many river water samples contained too many harmful substances. Over half had too much nitrate (硝酸盐), which makes algae (藻类) grow too fast. Algae can use up all the oxygen in the water, impairing other living things. Another harmful chemical, ammonia, was also higher than in past years, making the water quality even worse. Small insects and plants that fish rely on for food are also disappearing due to these changes.
To save water, some areas like Yorkshire have banned the use of garden hoses (橡皮管). People are not allowed to water plants, wash cars, or fill pools with hoses. Those who ignore the rules may have to pay a fine of up to £1,000.
Experts said climate change is causing more hot and dry weather. This puts a lot of stress on water supplies, river animals, and the environment. The Angling Trust warns that action must be taken now — before it’s too late.
1.What worsened the river issues?
A. The extreme weather.
B. The overuse of drinking water.
C. The chemical pollution.
D. The wastewater pollution.
2.What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. The method of protecting fish.
B. The impacts of weather on rivers.
C. A sharp drop in water level.
D. The fish in need of rescue.
3.What’s the meaning of the underlined word “impairing” in paragraph 4?
A. Annoying. B. Impressing. C. Exploring. D. Hurting.
4.What’s the purpose of the text?
A. To inspire people to protect wild animals.
B. To call on people to protect the rivers in the UK.
C. To inform a latest study about harmful material.
D. To encourage a positive attitude to climate change.
【答案】1. A 2. B 3. D 4. B

Passage 2
(25-26高一上·河北石家庄第二中学·期中)In Europe, the Netherlands is known for dikes (堤坝) that hold back the sea. Without dikes, this nation’s low-lying peatland (泥炭地) would be underwater. These areas weren’t always below sea level. Around the year 900, the peatland “was about 2 meters above sea level,” says Wils, a scientist at Utrecht University. Peatland was too wet to make good farmland. So the Dutch began to dry them. That’s when their land sinking (沉降) started, Wils says. Today, the Dutch use their peatlands to raise cows. But they must first remove extra water. Otherwise, this land is too wet to support the cows.
So the land continues to sink. The Dutch peatlands now lie 2 meters below sea level—a drop of 4 meters in most areas.
Wils is studying new ways to reduce sinking while supporting the land and people here. One method is called wet farming. That’s a term for “growing plants in wet environments,” Wils explains. Adding water back to the land makes the peat lighter and softer. It also allows new peat to form, which raises the height of the land.
Of course, not all news is good about this wet farming. Flooded fields can give off methane(CH4). This is a strong greenhouse gas that is much worse for the climate than carbon dioxide(CO2). Flooded rice fields commonly give off methane. So Wils is studying ways to cut their release of this gas. He doesn’t want a fix for sinking that worsens climate change.
Wet farming isn’t just a choice for the Netherlands. It’s also used in Germany, Switzerland and the United States. Peatlands can not only stop flooding, but also provide natural beauty for people to enjoy. “It makes sense to develop a landscape that supports the cities and provides relaxation,” Wils says. “These are actually very easy to combine.”
1.What might be the reason for the Netherlands’s peatland sinking?
A. The building of dikes.
B. The rise of sea levels.
C. The removal of its water.
D. The weight of the cows.
2.What is the main idea of paragraph 3?
A. Effects of wet farming.
B. Development of peatland.
C. Causes of land sinking.
D. Formation of greenhouse gases.
3.What is Wils’ attitude toward the future of wet farming?
A. Uncaring. B. Doubtful. C. Worried. D. Hopeful.
4.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. The Birth of Wet Farming
B. The Fix for Sinking Land
C. The Application of Peatlands
D. The Seriousness of Land Sinking

Passage 1
(25-26高一上·河北唐山开滦第一中学·期中)A new study from a German research group says climate change will reduce everyone’s income (收入) by about 19 percent over the next 25 years. That would be about $38 trillion per year. But the report warns it could get worse between 25 and 75 years from now if nothing is done soon. Developed countries such as Germany, the United States and France would face smaller decreases. The researchers foresaw that people living in those countries would see 11 to 13 percent less income. The greatest economic effect will be felt by people in the least-developed nations.
The researchers first estimated (估算) what the world’s economic growth would be without climate change. They then applied those values to the damage to economies if climate change continues at its present pace. There will still be economic growth, but it will be 19 percent lower in most places once the damage of climate change is taken into consideration.
Most at the research group have been centering on extreme weather events such as heat waves, floods, typhoons, hurricanes and other large storms. However, the effects are still mainly driven by average warming or overall temperature increases. The average world temperature last year was a record. That number was 1.35 ℃ above the average during pre-industrial times, before modern technology.
In the US, the southeastern and southwestern states such as New Mexico and Arizona are estimated to suffer the largest economic effects. In Europe, Spain and Italy are likely to feel the effects more than countries like Denmark and Germany. Areas that are usually cold for most of the year — Canada, Russia, Norway, Finland, and Sweden — will have good results from warming.
Experts note that the world’s poorest countries are also the least prepared to adapt to climate change. Those countries are least responsible for the change, but they will agonize 60 percent more income loss than wealthy nations.
1.What does the new study mainly show?
A. The causes of climate change.
B. The process of climate change.
C. The economic losses caused by climate change.
D. The health problems caused by climate change.
2.What have most of the researchers been focusing on?
A. Application value.
B. Temperature decreases.
C. Modern technology.
D. Natural disasters.
3.Why is Canada less affected by climate change?
A. It has a large area.
B. It has cold weather.
C. It is underdeveloped.
D. It has a small population.
4.What does the underlined word “agonize” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Research. B. Suffer. C. Avoid. D. Reduce.

Passage 2
(25-26高一上·河北石家庄第二中学·期中)It seems the fish were always a smart lot. Only, humans took some time to realise the fact. Some years ago, scientists had discovered that they recognize family members by their smell. Now, scientists in Glasgow University, have discovered something new, according to a report in the journal New Scientist. They have discovered that the salmon fish go a step further. They actually keep a nose out for fish that smell like outsiders and not like family. Then they get tough with them. The reason may be that they use smell to mark out land, the scientists feel. And so, when they got a very strong smell of outsiders, they feel threatened (威胁).
How did the scientists discover this? They brought up 44 salmon from two different families and kept them in several water tanks (缸). All the water tanks had members of both families. In some tanks, water was let in and let out. In other tanks they kept using the same water. When that happened, the fish smells also got stronger. For water gathers more and more of the smell with time.
The results were very interesting. In the tanks where water was let in and let out, the fish did not get very strong smells of family or outsiders. But in the tanks where the same water was used again and again, the fish smells were much stronger. The salmon in these tanks could easily tell apart the family members from outsiders. They got unpleasant and then attacked and bit the latter.
Scientists feel this discovery will help people who raise wild fisheries. Now they know that if they put salmon belonging to the same family in fast-flowing (流动的) water, they will not develop very strong connections. But if they put them in pools they will grow together and reproduce, leading to increased production.
1.What do scientists in Glasgow University discover about salmon fish?
A. They attack outsiders by their smell.
B. They can recognize family members.
C. They grow better in flowing water.
D. They use smells to find food.
2.How was the experiment carried out?
A. By comparing different types of fish.
B. By training fish to recognize smells.
C. By using different water conditions.
D. By observing fish in flowing water.
3.What do scientists suggest salmon farmers do?
A. Mix different families in pools.
B. Control water flow in raising.
C. Change the food for salmon.
D. Remove the salmon’s smell.
4.Where is the text probably taken from?
A. A travel guide.
B. A science magazine.
C. A TV advertisement.
D. A biology textbook.

(25-26高一上·河北石家庄第一中学·期中)In Spain, children and their families are riding bikes to school together in large groups. The program is called “bicibus” or bike bus. In Barcelona, the program started recently with only five children and grew quickly to hundreds of riders.
This fall, children in the Eixample area of Barcelona have a new way to get to school on Fridays — they ride their bikes. In September, a group of five children began biking to school with their parents on Fridays: Soon the group grew to 150 or more. The bike bus begins around 8:25 every Friday morning. The route it will follow is always posted ahead of time, so everyone knows where to join.
Instead of riding in bike lanes (道) or on sidewalks, the bicibus takes over the entire street. The commute (通勤) of these bikers takes about 25 minutes. And with the ever-growing cycling and skating kids taking part in this bike bus culture, the local police are helping stop traffic by riding in front of the bicibus and behind it. This further makes the parents happy that the additional security means their children will travel safely to school.
With music playing and bike bells ringing, the bicibus feels like a party. “The best part of the bicibus is that we ride along and pick up my friends and we ride together,” nine-year-old Maria Pitarch says.
Some parents have made the bicibus the way they get to work on Fridays. Parents are hoping that the bicibus will help change ideas about how people can get around in the city. They want the city to create wider, kid-friendly bike lanes that are separate from car traffic. They point out that the bicibus also helps cut down on pollution.
Recently, pictures and videos of the Eixample bicibus got a lot of attention on the social media site. Many people pointed out what a simple idea it is, and how easy it is to get started. Already some other areas in Barcelona are also organizing bike buses.

A. To introduce more about the bike bus.
B. To encourage readers to join the bike bus.
C. To praise the performance of the kids.
D. To show the enjoyment kids get from the program.
3.What do the parents expect the local government to do?
A. Cut down on pollution.
B. Focus on traffic problems.
C. Build safer bike lanes for kids.
D. Promote the bicibus program.

Passage 1
(25-26高一上·河北张家口第一中学·期中)The sun is setting, brightening your kids’ faces as they play in the waves. You reach for your phone for this perfect moment. But before you do, here’s a bit of surprising science: Taking photos is not the perfect way to keep memory as you think.
Taking too many pictures could actually harm the brain’s ability to keep memories, says Elizabeth Loftus, a psychology professor at the University of California, Irvine. So we get the photo but kind of lose the memory.
Photography “outsources” memories. It works in two ways: We either shake off the responsibility of remembering moments when taking pictures, or we’re so distracted by the process that we miss the moment altogether.
The first explanation is the loss of memory. People know that their camera is recording that moment, so they don’t try to remember. Similarly, if you write down someone’s phone number, you’re less likely to remember it offhand because your brain tells you there’s just no need. That’s all well and good—until that piece of paper goes missing.
The other is distraction. We’re distracted by the process of taking a photo how we hold our phone, composing the photo, such as smiling faces, the background to our liking and clear image, all of which uses up our attention that could otherwise help us memorize.
However, taking photos can benefit memory — when done mindfully. While taking a photo may be distracting, the act of preparation by focusing on visual details around has some upsides. When people take the time to zoom in (拉近镜头) on specific things, memories become strengthened.
Another benefit is that we recall moments more accurately with the photos. Memory has been reshaped with the help of new information and new experiences. Thus, photos or videos help us recall moments as if they really happened.
Memories die away without a visual record backing them up. Therefore, a photo is an excellent tool to help remember when done purposefully, which is worth exploring further.
1.What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To introduce the topic of the passage.
B. To call on readers not to take photos.
C. To show the interest in taking photos.
D. To explain how to take perfect photos.
2.Why does photography “outsource” memories?
A. Photos are more detailed than memories.
B. Many sources influence people’s memories.
C. People depend more on photos to remember.
D. Taking photos is helpful for us to memorize.
3.What will be discussed next?
A. Situations when taking photos is better.
B. When distraction is most likely to happen.
C. How to use photo-taking to memorize better.
D. How to stay focused while taking photos.
4.What may be a suitable title for the text?
A. Remember the moment and take photos properly.
B. Fewer photos, stronger memories.
C. Photos’ effects on memory recall.

(1)题解析:
推理判断题。根据文章第一段“The sun is setting, brightening your kids’ faces as they play in the waves. You reach for your phone for this perfect moment. But before you do, here’s a bit of surprising science: Taking photos is not the perfect way to keep memory as you think.(夕阳西下,孩子们在浪花中玩耍,他们的脸庞被映照得格外明亮。你伸手去拿手机,想要记录下这美好的瞬间。但在此之前,先了解一下这个令人惊讶的科学发现:拍照并不是你想象中保留记忆的完美方式。)”可知,第一段的主要目的是引出文章的主题,即拍照对记忆的影响。故选A。
(2)题解析:
细节理解题。根据第三段“Photography ‘outsources‘ memories. It works in two ways: We either shake off the responsibility of remembering moments when taking pictures, or we’re so distracted by the process that we miss the moment altogether.(摄影‘外包’了记忆。它有两种方式:要么我们在拍照时摆脱了记住瞬间的责任,要么我们被这个过程分散了注意力,以至于完全错过了那个瞬间。)”和第四段提到的“People know that their camera is recording that moment, so they don’t try to remember.(人们知道他们的相机正在记录那一刻,所以他们不去努力记住。)”可知,摄影会“外包”记忆是因为人们更多地依赖照片来记忆。故选C。
(3)题解析:
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Therefore, a photo is an excellent tool to help remember when done purposefully, which is worth exploring further.(因此,照片是一个很好的工具,当有目的性地拍摄时,它有助于记忆,这值得进一步探讨。)”
Passage 2
(25-26高一上·河北盐山中学·期中)For years, you’ve been told that stress can be deadly and is something to be avoided. Therefore, an anxious situation is often accompanied by a sense of fear. However, recent studies suggest that stress-related harmful effects on your health are not unavoidable.
One study followed 30,000 people over eight years and measured their stress levels. Those who believed that stress is harmful died at a higher rate than those who were under stress but didn’t acknowledge the so-called negative effects. The latter group was healthier, and many of them lived long, happy lives.
Stressful feelings start out in a small region of the brain that affects how people feel emotions, especially fear. The small region is very sensitive to possible threats. When it senses danger, it alerts the brain, and feelings of fear or stress can result. These feelings give people a warning message when they need to pay attention and when they need to take action. For instance, when the sight of a speeding car triggers (触发) the region to release a lightning-fast message, we know immediately to move out of the way!
Another study carried by Health psychologist Dr. McGonigal found a link between stress and the amount of sympathy people showed to others. Researchers tracked 1,000 adults, their descriptions of the level of stress in their lives and the amount of time spent helping others. With each major stressful event, such as a family tragedy or financial crisis, the risk of dying increased by 30 percent. But for the group who spent time helping others, there was no increase in stress-related deaths, even for those who had faced their own personal tragedies. According to Dr. McGonigal, “Chasing meaning is better for your health than trying to avoid discomfort. Go after what it is that creates meaning in your life and then trust yourself to handle the stress that follows.”
1.What does the study in paragraph 2 suggest?
A. Stress caused many deaths over eight years.
B. Stress won’t hurt you if you don’t acknowledge its presence.
C. It is not the stress but our response to it that creates problems.
D. Those without stress usually live long and happy lives.
2.What do we know about stress from paragraph 3?
A. Stress is harmful to the brain.
B. Stress can cause danger.
C. Stress can be a threat to us.
D. Stress can lead to timely action.
3.What can we learn from Dr. McGonigal’s study?
A. People without stress spend more time caring others.
B. Stress often causes a family tragedy or financial crisis.
C. Stress can be avoided by helping others.
D. People chasing meaning in life suffer less from stress.
4.Which may be the best title for the text?
A. Stress Is Not Your Enemy
B. Man Can Conquer Stress
C. We Need Remove Stress
D. Stress Is Nearly Harmless
【答案】1. C 2. D 3. D 4. A
【解析】

Passage 1
(25-26高一上·河北石家庄第一中学·期中)At just 19 years old, Akiša Peters teaches at the Sisseton Wahpeton Tribal College. He specializes in a language that is thousands of years old, the Dakota language, spoken by the Dakota people.
“The Dakota language is the most important aspect of Dakota culture. Without it, our Dakota culture would no longer exist.” Peters claimed. “I was lucky to grow up around many first-language Dakota speakers. But now the elderly continually passed away and at the end of their lives, they just wanted to know their families would continue to have the language. One of the problems our people have is finding ways to get at-length and ongoing exposure (接触) to the language.”
Aside from instructing at the college level, Peters uses social media to share videos that combine humor, culture, and basic-level conversation to help teach Dakota. In his free time, he visits Dakota elders. He also started an online group of youth to converse and share the knowledge of the language in a safe and supportive space.
Akiša Peters wants to tell the youth that if they want to learn their own language, sit with their elders and learn from them. Endless vocabulary sheets could discourage them from learning. Standards created by non-speakers could also do that. “Within the next decade, I believe my colleagues, other Dakota-learning relatives and I will have children and start a new generation of Dakota. I also hope my brothers and sisters will take the path we laid out for them and continue to learn and speak Dakota. On my reservation there are numerous young people working on the comeback of the language. I’m hopeful because I’m definitely not alone.” Akiša Peters told Teenvogue.

Passage 2
(25-26高一上·河北张家口第一中学·期中)“Long time no see.” is a very interesting sentence. When I first read this sentence from an American friend’s e-mail, I laughed. I thought it was a perfect example of Chinglish.
Obviously, it is a word-by-word literal translation (直译) of the Chinese greeting with wrong English grammar! Later on, my friend told me that it is a standard American greeting. I was too surprised to believe her. Her words were unbelievable at all. So I did research on Google.com. To my surprise, there are over 60 thousand web pages containing “Long time no see.” Though it is sort of informal, it is part of the language that Americans use daily. Interestingly, if you type this phrase in Microsoft Word, the software will tell you that the grammar needs to be corrected.
Nobody knows the origin of this Chinglish sentence. Some people believe that it came from Charlie Chan’s movies. In the 1930s, Hollywood moviemakers successfully created a worldwide famous Chinese detective named “Charlie Chan” on wide screens. Detective Chan liked to teach Americans some Chinese wisdom by quoting Confucius. “Long time no see.” was his symbol. Soon after Charlie Chan, “Long time no see.” became a popular expression in America thanks to the popularity of these movies.
Some scholars compare America to a huge melting pot. All kinds of cultures are mixed in the pot together and they change the color and taste of each other. Language is usually the first thing to be influenced in the mixed pot.
You can have some examples from other countries, such as pizza from Italian, sushi from Japanese, and déjà vu from French etc. There is a long list! Since Americans admire Chinese culture more and more nowadays, I believe more Chinese words will become American English in the future. In this way, the American’s melting pot keeps adding richness.
1.Why did the writer himself feel surprised?
A. “Long time no see.” is a Chinglish expression.
B. He’s found Americans use the expression formally every day.
C. So many literal translations of expressions are used in America.
D. “Longtime no see.” is used as a standard American English greeting.
2.What do the underlined words “a huge melting pot” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. A large boiling cooker.
B. Cross-cultural mixture.
C. A kind of cooked dish.
D. Confucius’s famous words.
3.What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Detectives translated the phrase “Long time no see.”
B. Cultures cannot be changed in the huge melting pot.
C. Hollywood probably made “Longtime no see.” popular.
D. The huge melting pot greatly affects all kinds of languages.
4.What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Some American expressions can be used in China.
B. Americans have a strong interest in Chinese culture.
C. American English keeps being enriched by different cultures.
D. Some Chinese daily expressions are introduced into English.
【答案】1. D 2. B 3. C 4. C

主题语境01 人与社会-中国文化

We travel to have time which we often lack (缺少) in our daily lives to admire a sunset, to meet new people, to go hiking for several days, or just to do nothing.
In our homes, smart devices powered by AI can control lighting, temperature, and security, saving us time and energy.
Yet, the rise of AI also raises important questions. Will AI take away jobs? While it’s true that some repetitive jobs may be automated, AI is also creating new roles that require skills in managing and working alongside intelligent systems. Another concern is data privacy. As AI systems learn from our data, who has access to this information, and how is it being used?
The key is not to fear AI but to understand and guide its development. By focusing on education and creating clear rules, we can ensure that AI serves humanity positively.
1.How does the author introduce AI in the first paragraph?
A. By comparing it with science fiction.
B. By listing its various applications.
C. By discussing its technical problems.
D. By describing its complex development process.
2.What is a positive effect of AI mentioned in the text?
A. It guarantees everyone’s job security.
B. It processes data quickly and accurately.
C. It has solved the problem of climate change.
D. It makes all home devices free of charge.
3.What is the main concern associated with AI discussed in the passage?
A. Its high cost of development.
B. Its inability to understand human emotions.
C. Its potential threat to employment and privacy.
D. Its slow learning speed in new environments.
4.What is the author’s overall attitude towards the development of AI?
A. Fearful and opposed.
B. Doubtful and cautious.
C. Objective and hopeful.
D. Indifferent and neutral.

Passage 1
(25-26高一上·河北五校联合教研体·期中)Online shopping has become something very common for young people. However, it’s not easy for old people. Therefore, buy-for-you shops are becoming popular among the old.
Mr. Li, a 65-year-old man, is crazy about this way of shopping. He says, “I can’t use the Internet. After I happened to find a buy-for-you shop, I decided to try it. Finally I got what I wanted. I was so happy.”
The shopkeeper, Mu Lan, says she started the business of offline buy-for-you in order to help people like Mr. Li. In only about ten days since the start of the business, she has received more than 20 orders from customers. Mu Lan is not the only one who finds the large need for offline buy-for-you business in the market. In her city, over 300 such shops opened their doors only in April.
In order to attract more customers, they have opened their shops in communities. And they charge a suitable service fee. For example, when buying things that cost less than 200 yuan for customers, they usually get 5 yuan as a service fee.

A. Positive. B. Doubtful. C. Unclear. D. Uncaring.
A. Parents. B. Teachers. C. Classmates. D. Researchers.
3.What does the underlined word “draws” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Concerns. B. Principles. C. Attractions. D. Achievements.
4.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The primary goals of Nagata’s research.
B. Reasons why parents act as a role model.
C. The advantages of living a screen-free life.
D. Strategies for limiting screen time for kids.

B. The best exercise for blood pressure.
C. The effects of various types of exercises.
D. The importance of keeping a healthy lifestyle.

A. Research. B. Business. C. Fashion. D. Culture.

(25-26高一上·河北保定唐县第一中学·期中)Among the world’s waste-recycling pioneers, Germany is the leader. The country has quite a detailed way of sorting their waste-down to the color of glass waste, the type of paper, the separate bin for metals, etc.
Here below are what you should know about Germany’s waste sorting system:
◇You are expected to gather your waste in your apartment/housing area’s local public garbage bins.
◇There are commonly several types of public garbage bins available in the German’s apartment/housing areas:
Blue bin — for paper and cardboard
Green and white bin — for glass, different bins for differently colored glass, not available for holiday decorations and lights
Yellow/orange bin — for plastic and metals
Brown bin — for goods that can be changed naturally by bacteria into substances that don’t harm the environment, like leftovers, fruit and vegetables
Gray/black bin — for everything else that can’t be recycled such as used cat litter and animal waste
◇Some items don’t belong in these public garbage bins. Items like used batteries, electronics, unused paints, and lights must be returned to the special agent/locations so they can be properly recycled. Other items such as clothes, shoes, and oversized rubbish and furniture are advised to be donated or sold.
◇There’s this thing called Pfand in Germany, a certain part of the price for a bottled drink that you get back if you send back the bottle to certified (有资历的) shops. German law requires shops over a certain size selling bottled drinks have a Pfandruckgabestelle, or place for bottles with deposits (押金). These bottles usually made of glass or plastic will be refilled. Of course, there’re strict health regulations.
