Text 1
W: The weather forecast said it was going to be sunny this afternoon.
M: I knew it wouldn’t. It was so windy this morning. And now we’ll have to wait until the shower stops.
Text 2
W: Hi, Andy. I didn’t see you in Professor Smith’s class yesterday. What happened?
M: Well, I had a headache. So, I called him and asked for sick leave.
Text 3
M: How much time has passed since we started talking?
W: It’s been only 10 minutes.
M: So right now it should be 3:10 pm.
W: Correct.
Text 4
W: I’m planning on getting a part-time job to get some working experience.
M: Well, my company needs a part-time assistant. Do you want to check it out?
W: Sure. Thank you so much.
Text 5
M: Do you still need the junk on the shelf? If not, I’ll toss it out.
W: Who are you to call it junk? It’s my life! I discovered it in a convenience store beside the bookshop.
Text 6
M: What do you take for a bad cold, Jill?
W: Well, I don’t like to take those cold medicines. They put me to sleep. I bought this last time I had a cold.
M: Whoa, what is that? Is it the root of a plant?
W: Yes. It’s called ginseng.
M: It looks kind of strange.
W: Yeah, but it really works. A Korean woman told me to try it. You should try it, too!
M: Well, I’ll think about it.
Text 7
M: I’m planning my trip to New Zealand. I heard you went there last year.
W: Oh, yes. What would you like to know?
M: Which month is the best time to go?
W: I went in December but it was very hot. Any time after August would be OK. I suggest you go in October.
M: What is the best place you visited?
W: I like Milford Sound most, but my friends all love Mount Cook. Lake Tekapo is really beautiful, too.
M: Where did you stay?
W: At a local family. We saved a lot of money staying there. Hotels were too expensive. Next time I go, I’ll camp. It must be interesting.
M: Sounds great. Thanks, Jane.
W: You’re welcome!
Text 8
W: So what are you going to do for the coming summer holiday?
M: I think I’m going to continue playing soccer.
W: How are you going to do that? School is over.
M: My P.E. teacher suggested I join a club team so I can improve for next year. The team is coached by a professional player.
W: Cool! I’m going to join a swim club. My father wants me to try rock climbing, but I think it’s too dangerous.
M: Well, it might be fun, and it shouldn’t take up too much of your time.
W: But rock climbing is an individual sport. I like swimming because it allows me to make new friends.
M: Hey! Why don’t you join the soccer club with me? You can meet people and get into shape.
W: Sounds fun!
Text 9
M: Hi, I’d like some information about the photography course.
W: Well, we do several different courses. The first is the “Introducing Photography”. That runs for ten weeks and it’s a primary-level course. That’s on Monday evenings.
M: Right.
W: Next, there’s the “Black and White Photography”, which is at middle level, so you’d need some previous experience for that one. And you’d have to have an interview with a tutor beforehand. It’s a daytime course on Tuesdays. That’s also for ten weeks.
M: Pity! I work during daytime on Tuesdays.
W: Well, there’s also the “Scenery Photography”, which is on Tuesday evenings. That’s a longer course than the others. It runs for sixteen weeks.
M: And do you need previous experience for that one?
W: It’s at advanced level. So, yes. And again, you’d have to be interviewed beforehand. Then another one we do is the “Art of Digital Photography”. It’s for ten weeks. You can do it at any time to suit you during the week. No interview.
Text 10
W: I was born in Charlotte in North Carolina. I lived there until I was twenty-six years old. I often travelled to the cities nearby such as Matthews and Mooresville. As a result, I was very familiar with the natural setting of the state. Then I moved to Columbus with my husband after we got married. We had a daughter there. When my daughter Florence was six years old, we moved back to Charlotte. For me, it was a wonderful feeling to be back in such a familiar natural setting, but my daughter was not happy about it. She had just moved away from the only home she had ever known, and wasn’t yet connected here. I decided to help her know her new home better. Since I wasn’t working then, I decided to draw pictures. So I began drawing pictures for her of the native North Carolina plants and animals. To my joy, my daughter really loved what I drew. As a result, I drew more and more. Two years later, my daughter was already in love with her new home and my first book about North Carolina came out. Now you can call me an artist.

第一节
A
根据Sancho Beach部分中“…but it is difficult to access. It can only be reached by boat or by climbing down the rocky hillsides on each end…”
根据Vichayito Beach部分中“Just a short distance from the waterfront town of Mancora, this lovely beach is often quiet and peaceful, offering some nice shallow water to swim in for little ones.”
根据Copacabana Beach部分中“…but there are good spots for surfing and windsurfing. Various water activities make it a great beach.”和Jericoacoara Beach部分中“Located near the city centre, this beach is very popular among surfers thanks to its great waves.”
根据第二段关键句“The results show that crows have counting capacity near those of human babies, says lead study author Diana Liao, a researcher at the University of Tbingen in Germany.” 故选A项。
根据第三段“Instead, the birds count by controlling the number of vocalizations (声音) they produce to correspond to associated hints. This is similar to how young children count before learning symbolic numbers, Liao says.” 故选A项。
根据第四段内容“In the study, Liao and her colleagues presented the crows with randomly ordered hints, four of which were visual-coloured numbers that appeared on a touch screen. And four of them were auditory (听觉的), including sounds made by guitars and drums. Through trial and error, the birds had to figure out the correct number of calls to pair with each hint. If they got it right, they received a worm reward.”
根据最后一段内容“Onur Güntürkün, a biopsychologist at Ruhr University Bochum in Germany, who was not involved in the research, says the new paper is ‘excellent’ even if the findings are ‘not unexpected’, given all that scientists already know about crows’ intelligence.”
根据第二段中“The researchers assumed that our ancestors first evolved (进化) hand flexibility, which then promoted the development of a larger brain.”(研究人员认为,我们的祖先首先进化出了手的灵活性,然后促进了更大的大脑的发展。)
根据最后一段“Fotos Alexandros Karakostis, a biological anthropologist who was not involved in the study, comments that the research indicates that adaptations to the brain and hand likely evolved together. However, he notes that the brain size and thumb length cannot take only credit for the brain evolution or high level of hand coordination.”(没有参与这项研究的生物人类学家Fotos Alexandros Karakostis评论说,这项研究表明,对大脑和手的适应可能是一起进化的。
根据第二段“Researchers analysing the comprehensive Emojipedia (表情图标百科) found that vertebrate animals (脊椎动物) are heavily favoured over all other types of life, while plants are hardly featured at all—and some branches of biodiversity are missing entirely.”(研究人员在分析全面的表情图标百科网站时发现,脊椎动物在所有生物类型中被极大偏爱,而植物则几乎没有被提及,生物多样性的一些分支则完全缺失。) 故选A项。
根据文章第三段中的“‘The paper asks a virtual question,’ he says, noting that past research suggests that including emojis in social media posts can boost positive engagement. Some emojis could help to promote perception of certain biological classifications online, Wijeratne suggests.”(“这篇论文提出了一个实际的问题,”他说道,并指出过去的研究表明,在社交媒体帖子中加入表情符号可以促进积极参与。
根据第五段的“But Lee doesn’t think any of these will make the cut soon. She even previously advocated for a starfish emoji, whose uses proved too limited.”(但Lee认为这些都不会很快投入使用。 故选A项。
根据文章最后一段的“Despite the difficulty of expanding emojis, big advances in emoji biodiversity have already been made.”(尽管扩展表情符号很困难,但表情符号生物多样性已经取得了很大进展。)和Ficetola的话“‘My personal feeling is that we have a better understanding of biodiversity now, emojis included,’ he says. ‘Still, we can always do better.’”(“我个人的感觉是,我们现在对生物多样性有了更好的理解,包括表情符号,”他说,“不过,我们总是可以做得更好。”)
36.D 根据上文“For me, it started when I picked up Grant Faulkner’s collection of 100-word stories, Finsver. Until that moment, I had no idea that a story could even be told in so few words.”以及后文“But I soon ran into tricky troubles, which taught me valuable lessons. Here are tips I learned the hard way so you won’t have to hit the same roadblocks on your journey of writing micro novels.”
37.F 根据上文“Outline the entire story. Much like writing any long story that may dishearten you, you have the options of building a complete outline of all the events of the story. It helps have an idea of what you want to have happen over the course of that structure.”
38.B 根据上文“Don’t get lost in the details.”以及后文“When you write long works, you can find yourself using far more language than you really need to communicate your ideas. When you write micro novels, you have to write only what is necessary. The bottom line is that you have to determine how much you need to give the reader to understand the scene.”
39.E 根据后文“Microfiction can be the twin of prose poetry. Therefore, each word must matter in a micro novel. So you have to be so selective and get comfortable with language. You might even employ poetic devices in your language. At last read your work aloud and feel the rhythms of language fitting comfortably in your mouth.”
40.G 根据上文“Start strong and end strong, but don’t leave the middle boring.”以及后文“Ideally, you still want your readers to start the micro novel and refuse to put it down until they reach the last word. After all, each sentence should carry its own weight as a story.”

One possible version:
However, curiosity got the better of me one morning. Ignoring my mother’s reminder(现在分词短语作状语), I slid into the forbidden world. How fascinating(感叹句)!Among various colourful flowers danced butterflies(全部倒装). With excitement, I chased after the graceful creatures, running deeper into the woods(现在分词短语作状语). Suddenly they flew over trees and disappeared. What was worse, I got lost! I rushed around, crying for help(现在分词短语作状语), frightened and helpless(形容词短语作状语), but in vain. I repeated the useless efforts until sunset. “If only I followed mum’s reminder(虚拟条件句)!” I curled up under a tree, in bitter regret and cried again.
“Kate?” Behind the trees covered by the rays of the setting sun came my mother’s voice. “Mum! I’m here!” Wild with joy, I rushed towards where the voice came from(宾语从句). Behind a tree appeared my mother(全部倒装). She dashed up, hugged me tight and checked whether I got hurt(宾语从句). “I’m so sorry! I should have appreciated your suggestion!” I burst into tears. Wiping tears from my muddy face(现在分词短语作状语), she repeated the reminders, which weren’t boring any more, but wise and affectionate, and were implanted in my life forever(定语从句).

South America has a long and interesting coastline. When it comes to beaches, there are some excellent options to be found across the continent.
Sancho Beach
This beach is an amazing stretch of sand with peaceful waters. The clear waters are perfect for swimming but it is difficult to access. It can only be reached by boat or by climbing down the rocky hillsides on each end, so it isn’t particularly good for younger children or people who are physically challenged.
Vichayito Beach
Just a short distance from the waterfront town of Mancora, this lovely beach is often quiet and peaceful, offering some nice shallow water to swim in for little ones. A little further out, the waves pick up, making for fine surfing and windsurfing surroundings, while the charming village offers nice accommodation.
Copacabana Beach
The cold water here means it isn’t an ideal swimming location, but there are good spots for surfing and windsurfing. Various water activities make it a great beach. Visit early, especially in the busy tourist season, not only to avoid crowds, but also to gain admittance—visitors will be turned away once the park reaches peak capacity.
Jericoacoara Beach
Located near the city centre, this beach is very popular among surfers thanks to its great waves. It isn’t too rough to swim for experienced swimmers, although a slightly rocky seafloor means you should be careful. With large crowds of people, the best time to visit is sunset—arrive early to get a good viewing spot.
( )21.What may make Sancho Beach difficult to reach?
A.The great waves. B.Its unique location.
C.Lack of boat services. D.Large crowds of tourists.
( )22.Which beach is the most ideal place for young children to swim?
A.Sancho Beach. B.Vichayito Beach.
C.Copacabana Beach. D.Jericoacoara Beach.
( )23.What do Copacabana Beach and Jericoacoara Beach have in common?
A.They both appeal to those loving water sports.
B.Tourists may be rejected due to their limited capacity.
C.Tourists should arrive early to get a good viewing spot.
D.They provide perfect swimming options for professionals.

The rock group Counting Crows(乌鸦) were onto something when they chose their band name. Crows can indeed count, according to research published this week in Science.
The results show that crows have counting capacity near those of human babies, says lead study author Diana Liao, a researcher at the University of Tbingen in Germany. “We think this is the first time that this has been shown for any animal species,” she adds.
Crows do not appear to be capable of symbolic counting, where numbers serve as an exact representation. Instead, the birds count by controlling the number of vocalizations (声音) they produce to correspond to associated hints. This is similar to how young children count before learning symbolic numbers, Liao says. For example, a baby who is asked how many apples are on a tree may answer, “One, one, one.” The baby produces the number of speech sounds which agree with that of the apples, rather than just saying, “Three.”
In the study, Liao and her colleagues presented the crows with randomly ordered hints, four of which were visual-coloured numbers that appeared on a touch screen. And four of them were auditory (听觉的), including sounds made by guitars and drums. Through trial and error, the birds had to figure out the correct number of calls to pair with each hint. If they got it right, they received a worm reward.
After receiving about 180 training sessions, all of the crows were able to produce the correct number of vocalizations associated with the hints—a “pretty cool” finding, Liao says. She suspects, too, that the crows could have mastered numbers higher than four if they were given the opportunity.
Onur Güntürkün, a biopsychologist at Ruhr University Bochum in Germany, who was not involved in the research, says the new paper is “excellent” even if the findings are “not unexpected”, given all that scientists already know about crows’ intelligence.
( )24.What is the new research about?
A.Crows’ ability to count.
B.Crows’ skill of solving problems.
C.A comparison between crows and babies.
D.An investigation into a famous rock group.
( )25.Why does the author mention a baby counting apples in Paragraph 3?
A.To clarify how crows count.
B.To explain how babies think.
C.To illustrate the wisdom of crows.
D.To display babies’ learning progress.
( )26.How did the crows get the worm rewards?
A.By counting objects on the screen.
B.By picking colours from the touch screen.
C.By choosing between sounds and images.
D.By matching sounds to visual and audio hints.
( )27.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.The research is poorly recognized.
B.The results fit with previous findings.
C.The study needs further confirmation.
D.The biopsychologist is critical of the study.

As human species, our big brains and flexible hands have always made us feel special. However, in a study published in the journal Communications Biology, researchers investigated nearly 100 primate species including monkeys, apes and humans and revealed that the creatures with longer thumbs (拇指) usually had larger brains.
The researchers assumed that our ancestors first evolved (进化)hand flexibility, which then promoted the development of a larger brain. For instance, as primates’ control of objects improved, their brains would have had to become bigger to use these abilities. Joanna Baker, lead author of the study says. “Ultimately, though, the two needed to go hand in hand,” she adds.
While Baker and her colleagues predicted that longer thumbs would be tied to growth of the cerebellum—the part of the brain that influences movement and coordination (协调), the team was surprised to find that they are actually associated with the neocortex, a large region involved in cognition and sensory information. This suggests that longer thumbs are “linked to thinking, not movement”. Later, they tested the idea that the evolution of longer thumbs is associated with tool use, but they didn’t find any correlation.
“Ultimately, we’ve always known that our big brains and sharp fingers set us apart, but now we can see they didn’t evolve separately,” Baker says. The study suggests our species is not quite as unique as we once thought, and it also represents the first direct evidence that brain evolution and hand flexibility are associated throughout the primate family tree.
Fotos Alexandros Karakostis, a biological anthropologist who was not involved in the study, comments that the research indicates that adaptations to the brain and hand likely evolved together. However, he notes that the brain size and thumb length cannot take only credit for the brain evolution or high level of hand coordination.
( )28.What was the assumption of the researchers according to Paragraph 2?
A.Brain evolution determined hand size.
B.Bigger brains made humans intelligent.
C.Object control was easy for ancestors.
D.Hand flexibility drove brain development.
( )29.Why does the author mention “tool use” in Paragraph 3?
A.To make a prediction.
B.To clarify a concept.
C.To present a different view.
D.To offer supporting evidence.
( )30.What is Karakostis’ attitude towards the research?
A.Favourable. B.Objective.
C.Doubtful. D.Indifferent.
( )31.What is the main idea of the text?
A.The bigger the brain, the longer the thumb.
B.Big brains and sharp fingers set humans apart.
C.Primate brains and thumbs evolve together.
D.Evolution mainly depends on brains and hands.

Many digital characters we call emojis describe the natural world. Yet the emoji tree of life is imbalanced, according to a study published recently in the journal iScience.
Researchers analysing the comprehensive Emojipedia (表情图标百科) found that vertebrate animals (脊椎动物) are heavily favoured over all other types of life, while plants are hardly featured at all—and some branches of biodiversity are missing entirely. The study authors suggest that these gaps could influence digital communication about protection and biology.
Emojis are an increasingly large part of human communication, and it’s worth examining the holes, says Sanjaya Wijeratne, a computer scientist who has studied emoji meaning and use. “The paper asks a virtual question,” he says, noting that past research suggests that including emojis in social media posts can boost positive engagement. Some emojis could help to promote perception of certain biological classifications online, Wijeratne suggests.
But emojis come with costs, says Jennifer Lee, a current member of the non-profit Unicode Consortium’s Emoji Subcommittee, which is responsible for shaping international emoji standards. Every additional emoji requires storage space and adds to keyboard clutter. New emojis must be carefully considered and meet standards of use frequency.
Study co-author Gentile Francesco Ficetola, a biologist at the University of Milan, isn’t advocating for every species to get its cartoon version. Instead, he and his colleagues suggest increasing virtual representation by adding just three new emojis that would significantly boost diversity: a flatworm, a water bear and a starfish. But Lee doesn’t think any of these will make the cut soon. She even previously advocated for a starfish emoji, whose uses proved too limited. “I tried,” she says. “And it’s pretty, but that’s it.”
Despite the difficulty of expanding emojis, big advances in emoji biodiversity have already been made. The number of animal types more than doubled between 2015 and 2022, according to the study, which was a pleasant surprise for Ficetola. “My personal feeling is that we have a better understanding of biodiversity now, emojis included,” he says. “Still, we can always do better.”
( )32.What do we know about emojis describing nature?
A.They’re limited in variety.
B.They’re favoured by vertebrate animals.
C.They’re insufficient in number.
D.They’re used to protect the ecosystem.
( )33.What does the author imply in Paragraph 3?
A.Social media urge posters to use positive emojis.
B.Emojis broaden users’ knowledge of species.
C.Emojis are a popular daily topic.
D.Holes are typical of emojis.
( )34.Which best explains the phrase “make the cut” in Paragraph 5?
A.Come into use. B.Get across.
C.Spring to mind. D.Stay still.
( )35.How does Ficetola think about the expansion of emojis?
A.Challenging. B.Unclear.
C.Hopeless. D.Optimistic.

For me, it started when I picked up Grant Faulkner’s collection of 100-word stories, Finsver. Until that moment, I had no idea that a story could even be told in so few words. 36. But I soon ran into tricky troubles, which taught me valuable lessons. Here are tips I learned the hard way so you won’t have to hit the same roadblocks on your journey of writing micro novels.
Outline the entire story. Much like writing any long story that may dishearten you, you have the options of building a complete outline of all the events of the story. It helps have an idea of what you want to have happen over the course of that structure. 37.
Don’t get lost in the details. 38. When you write long works, you can find yourself using far more language than you really need to communicate your ideas. When you write micro novels, you have to write only what is necessary. The bottom line is that you have to determine how much you need to give the reader to understand the scene.
39. Microfiction can be the twin of prose poetry. Therefore, each word must matter in a micro novel. So you have to be so selective and get comfortable with language. You might even employ poetic devices in your language. At last read your work aloud and feel the rhythms of language fitting comfortably in your mouth.
Start strong and end strong, but don’t leave the middle boring. 40. Ideally, you still want your readers to start the micro novel and refuse to put it down until they reach the last word. After all, each sentence should carry its own weight as a story.
A.I discovered there were few.
B.Focus on what is most important.
C.Approach each chapter in an exploratory way.
D.After that, I tried my hand at writing micro novels.
E.Pay attention to your language the way a poet would.
F.So you don’t become discouraged with the process and quit it.
G.Make sure you keep your foot on the gas throughout the process.

Undoubtedly, Mother Nature is always attractive to kids. In our childhood, how often did we turn a deaf ear to our parents’ advice? Very often! Thus, we landed ourselves in a situation where we greatly regretted our act of not having listened to the advice of the wise.
Such an unforgettable experience I had at the age of 7 gave me an invaluable lesson, after which I deeply understood why my gentle mother was repeating the boring suggestions and I would try to take her suggestions seriously.
In my childhood, I was so crazy about nature that even playing among the colourful flowers in our garden could make my day. Our house was next to the woods which had always stirred up(激起) great curiosity in me in wanting to find out what was within. Every time I saw fascinating butterflies dancing from the woods, my curiosity grew.
But my mother didn’t like me wandering off on my own and always ensured that I was within her sight. Even if she allowed me to explore the surrounding area on my own, it was only to be somewhere near the house. Being as curious as the cat, I always desired to explore the woods. It seemed as if my mother had understood my desire, so she had warned me on lots of occasions never to enter the woods alone.
“Mum, can I go out and play in the garden?” I asked.
“Sure,” she would reply each time. “Kate, you can play in the garden but you must promise me one thing—only when I’m with you can you go into the woods. There are no cases of animal attacks on humans, but it’s still dangerous for a little kid like you. It’s too easy to get lost in the woods.”
“Sure, you’ve said that many times!” I answered without patience at her repeated reminders.
Paragraph 1:
However, curiosity got the better of me one morning.
Paragraph 2:
“Kate?” Behind the trees covered by the rays of the setting sun came my mother’s voice.
