These often take the form of self-serving biases (偏见), that is, we tend to owe other people’s successes to good luck, while seeing our own good results as a sign of born talent. Another example is the “better-than-average” effect, in which case we think we’re better than most others at various skills from driving to maths. Getting defensive when we’re criticised, or when we make a mistake, is yet another of these self-protective mechanisms (机制). As the politicians so often say “mistakes were made, but not by me”. So, when you give someone negative feedback (反馈) or you criticise them or their beliefs, you are—perhaps unconsciously—threatening their psychological defences. By forcing them to recognise how they’ve mistaken things, you’re likely to trigger extremely uncomfortable social emotions, such as shame, guilt or embarrassment, or scary thoughts of rejection or loss of status. A way for people to avoid these uncomfortable feelings and thoughts is to get defensive, to deny they did anything wrong, or to engage in the mental gymnastics needed to save face. Support for the social and moral aspects of defensiveness comes from a study by psychologists at Australia’s Flinders University in 2020. The researchers showed that volunteers’ defensiveness (about past mistakes or possible moral guilt) was strengthened if they’d just had an experience of being socially rejected—thus making them more mentally weak. Contrarily, the volunteers acted less defensively if they’d had an earlier opportunity to demonstrate their moral values, which would have made them feel more secure about their moral standing. One practical point from all this is that when you’re giving negative feedback, it pays to consider the effect it may have on the other person’s self-confidence. Therefore, focus your criticism on what they did wrong, not on their personality or character. You can also take some of the sting out by concentrating on how their mistake can be fixed or how they can improve next time. That way they’re less likely to take things so personally. ( )1.Why do people get so defensive when criticised? A.To escape severe punishment. B.To refuse future improvement. C.To prevent unpleasant emotions. D.To demonstrate their being delicate. ( )2.What did the study by psychologists at the Flinders University in 2020 find? A.Social rejection increases defensiveness. B.Expressing moral values increases defensiveness. C.Giving advice on fixing one’s mistake hurts his confidence. D.Focusing criticism on one’s personality decreases his defensiveness. ( )3.Which of the following is a proper time for giving negative feedback? A.One has just made a blood donation. B.One has just received a job rejection. C.One has just been beaten in a debate. D.One has just failed an exam. ( )4.What is the main idea of the article? A.People should avoid giving negative feedback to others. B.People often use psychological defences to cope with criticism. C.The Flinders University conducted a study on social rejection. D.The “better-than-average” effect is a common psychological defence. ●Ⅵ 阅读七选五(每小题2.5分,共12.5分) Walking has been considered as one of the best possible exercises. For many people, daily walking offers massive and long-term physical and mental benefits. 1. A Stanford University study found that participants were more creative when walking as opposed to sitting.  2. You’ve probably heard the phrase “exercise your creativity”. Our creative mindset is triggered by physical movement, which is exactly why walking with your dog, a friend, or alone feeds creative thinking.  But the scenery is almost as important as the sweat. Just by going outside, you are stepping out of your habitual surroundings and your comfort zone, which is necessary if you want to open your mind to new possibilities. You can walk through a tree-filled neighbourhood. 3. Even when you walk down a busy street, you can’t help but get distracted by the sweet smells from a food cart or the child pointing to a building you haven’t even noticed before.  Walking outside cultivates our ability to collect new ideas and take in new sights, sounds, smells, and flavours. Shinrin-yoku, a common form of relaxation in Japan, suggests that being in the forest and walking among the trees there can lower your stress levels. 4. Research has shown that immersion in nature around your neighbourhood or the disconnection from multimedia increased performance on a creative problem-solving task.  So instead of setting a fitness goal, why not set a creativity goal that starts with walking outdoors? 5. For example, you can turn off your phone and give yourself the chance to be present in the world, to hear conversations and natural sounds, and to notice the way people move and the way the sun reflects in a lake.  Walk not just for exercise. Walk for wonder. A.Unfortunately, you often fail to do it. B.Engage more closely with your surroundings. C.The movement aspect of walking is obviously key. D.Without enough energy, you cannot wonder or create. E.But to receive the benefits, you do not have to live in a forest. F.This habit, however, isn’t just a beneficial pursuit but an element of innovation. G.Alternatively, you can wander around a park and observe people relaxing or birds singing. ●Ⅶ 语法填空(每题1.5分,共15分) Nowadays, Chinese people 1. Mark and Mindy stepped out of the van and looked at their new home with pride. They had both been saving for a long time to purchase their first house together and were very excited to go on a new venture. Within an hour they had unloaded a number of boxes and were pleased with their progress. The sky had begun to darken slightly, but the weather was still pleasant. Then Mindy heard it—even felt it. There was a large clap of thunder and then a bolt of lightning. Mindy and Mark immediately froze and looked at each other, and then looked at the boxes scattered on their lawn. They hastily raced to get their belongings indoors, but not before getting caught in heavy rain. The couple stood in their living room, wet from head to toe, surrounded by what were now very wet boxes. Then, Mark noticed a pool of water in the hallway. He went to inspect and found that there was water dripping from the ceiling. “We can have someone fix it,” Mindy said. “I’ll grab a bucket to catch the water for now.” A moment later, Mark heard a scream and raced into the kitchen just in time to see a mouse running across the floor. Mindy was frozen with fright. “Don’t worry. We can take care of that!” Mark said, trying to sound as reassuring (安心的) as possible. “Let’s go unpack some of the boxes. That will make us feel better.” Mark and Mindy made their way to the living room, but when they opened a box holding their kitchen utensils (器皿) and dishes, they found that all of their plates, bowls and cups were broken. They looked at each other in dismay. “What do we do now?” Mindy asked. Their first day in their new home was not turning out to be the joyous occasion they had expected. Just then, they both heard a noise. There was a knock at the door. 注意:续写词数应为150个左右。 Paragraph 1: They opened the door slowly and found a little cat before their eyes.           Paragraph 2: The squeaking (吱吱叫) noises were coming from the attic (阁楼).          学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ Period Six Writing Workshop & Other parts Ⅰ.1.topic 2.clarity 3.organises 4.principle(s) 5.progression Ⅱ.1.invitation 2.innovation 3.competitor 4.fluency 5.engagement 6.approval 7.defence 8.motivation 9.sincerely 10.belonging Ⅲ.1.On behalf of 2.belong to 3.take up 4.In contrast to 5.give in to 6.be responsible for Ⅳ.1.whether you could meet me for an interview at two o’clock tomorrow afternoon in your office 2.waiting for their English teacher to give out results 3.While climbing the hill/When climbing the hill Ⅴ.【文章大意】 这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了人们通过心理防御机制来应对批评。 1.C 细节理解题。根据第三段“By forcing them to recognise how they’ve mistaken things, you’re likely to trigger extremely uncomfortable social emotions, such as shame, guilt or embarrassment, or scary thoughts of rejection or loss of status.
