THE AMERICAN TRAIL is a very popular section in the Smithsonian's National Zoo.
Visitors love to see the active animals. However, they may not be aware of the hard work of the zookeepers. Every day, the keepers are busy preparing food, training animals, among many other duties. Let's take a look at one of their typical workdays.
7 a.m.
The first thing we do in the morning is check on all the animals in our charge. We take a head count and make sure everyone appears healthy. Our North American beavers (河狸)are active at night. We give them a quick hello and try not to disturb their rest.
8 a.m.
Every day, we sort through more than 100 pounds of fish for our sea lions and seals (海豹).
Together with our volunteers, we make sure that the fish is of the highest quality before we
feed it to an animal.
8:30 a.m.
Our sea lions are fed many times a day. Each feeding is an opportunity for us to carefully
check every part of their bodies.
9:30 a.m.
It's time to train our gray wolves. We would ask for an action. If the animal performs the
required movement, he or she will be given a meatball. Of course, the animals can choose
to walk away, and they won't be punished for doing that.
10:15 a.m.
Our daily sea lion and seal show begins! Our visitors are always surprised at the intelligence
of these animals. Through our shows, they also learn how to help protect sea animals.
1:45 p.m.
Our beavers wake up. We feed them and do a careful body check on each of them.
2:20 p.m.
We train the other animals, including the river otters (河獭) and the ravens(渡鸦). Neither
rain nor cold can keep us from our duties. We’re always there to care for the animals.

THE STORY OF KYLE
An Inspirational Story on Friendship
① One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class walking home from school. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must really be a nerd."
② I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on. As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up, and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes.
③ My heart went out to him. So I jogged over to him, and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, I saw a tear in his eye. As I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks. They really should get lives." He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!" There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.
④ I helped him pick up his books and asked him where he lived. As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to private school before now. I would have never hung out with a private school kid before, but we talked all the way home, and I carried his books.
⑤ He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. I asked him if he wanted to play football on Saturday with me and my friends. He said yes.
⑥ We hung out all weekend, and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him. And my friends thought the same of him. Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again. I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books every day!" He just laughed and handed me half the books.
⑦ Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends. When we were seniors, we began to think about college. Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I was going to Duke. I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem. He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.
⑧ Kyle was valedictorian(优秀毕业生代表) of our class. He had to prepare a speech for graduation. I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak.
⑨ On graduation day, I saw Kyle. He looked great. He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school. He filled out and actually looked good in glasses. I could see that he was nervous about his speech, so I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!" He looked at me with a grateful look and smiled. "Thanks," he said.
⑩ As he started his speech, he cleared his throat and began. "Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those hard times. Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach—but mostly your friends. I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give them. I am going to tell you a story." I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met. He had planned to kill himself over the weekend. He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home. He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile. "Thankfully, I was saved. My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."
⑪ I heard the gasp(倒吸气) go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment. I saw his mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile. Not until that moment did I realize its depth.
⑫ Never underestimate the power of your actions. With one small gesture, you can change a person's life.

If you go to a bookshop, no assistant will come near to you and say, “Can I help you?” You needn’t buy anything you don’t want. You may try to find out where the book you want is. But if you fail, the assistant will lead you there and then he will go away. It seems that he is not interested in selling any books at all.
There is a story about a bookshop. A student found a useful book in a shop, but it was too expensive for him to buy. He couldn’t get it from the library, either. So every afternoon, he went there to read a little at a time. One day, he couldn’t find the book from its usual place. Just then, the assistant came up to him and pointed to the book in a corner. “I put it there in order not to be sold out,” said the assistant. Then he left and the student went on reading.

I've learned many lessons throughout my life. One that stands out to me is the importance of teamwork. I learned this lesson when working on a group project for my social studies class. At first, I thought that I could do the project on my own and get a better grade. But, as we started working together, I realized that effort of the group resulted in a better outcome. We were able to inspire each other, divide the work, and provide support and encouragement when needed. By the end of the project, we all received high marks and I learned that there is strength in numbers. From that experience, I now understand that teamwork can be an incredibly powerful tool, and I try to apply this lesson in all aspects of my life.
