Every year around this time, the agricultural fields of South West England turn into giant works of art overnight. They usually restarts the age-old debate of whether the crop circles are man-made creations or the work of aliens trying to send us a message.
This year's first crop circle was created on a field in Wiltshire, on May 7th. The beautiful circular piece of art is just one of many that will start to show up as the summer goes on.
Crop circles or patterns are not new to this or other parts of the world. They have been around for years. The earliest ones recorded date back to the 17th century. However, they have gotten increasingly complex over the years.
While some are man-made, the ones in South West England , appear mysteriously overnight, and have become the topic of many debates. Some people believe that thanks to modern technology, it is possible to create such complicated designs in the middle of the night.
However, others say that most crop circles appear on 'ley' lines, which are straight lines that connect many important ancient sites. So the circles must be the work of alien superpowers. One thing everybody does agree on, is that they have been wonderful for the local economy, since they attract thousands of visitors each year.
What do you think? Be sure to let us know by adding your comments below.
Ⅳ. Listen to the passage and fill in the blanks to complete the sentences(听短文,用听到的单词完成下列内容。每空格限填一词)
The American space agency NASA says a spacecraft has entered the sun's outermost atmosphere for the first time. The Parker Solar Probe traveled through the solar atmosphere's outer edge–known as the corona–in April, scientists announced this week. They said it took them a few months to examine data from the spacecraft and to confirm the result.
Unlike Earth, the sun does not have a solid surface. Instead, it is a superheated ball of material held together by gravity and magnetic forces. Some solar material escapes and is released into space in what is known as the solar wind.
The Parker Solar Probe was launched in 2018 with a main goal of studying the solar wind. Scientists say being able to study the solar wind and the corona close up can help them better understand how solar activities influence Earth. NASA has described the spacecraft's entry into the outermost atmosphere as successfully "touching" the sun. The spacecraft will keep getting closer to the sun and diving deeper into the corona until its final orbit, planned for 2025.

Ben and I were on our way to school. I was riding my bicycle and Ben was skating. We were talking happily to each other when suddenly two cars crashed into each other on the street corner. A pedestrian was walking in front of me on the zebra crossing. He was carrying some big boxes and he didn’t see me. The terrible noise caused by the crash scared me and made me notice the man in front of me. I stopped my bike immediately. Luckily, I didn’t knock the man down. What a narrow escape! I sighed with relief. Ben was also frightened. We both think that we shouldn’t chat on the road next time. Road safety is very important to us.

We know what those balloons are made of and the material is the same,’ one person from the base said at the time.
However, in 1978 the story appeared again when a UFO expert interviewed some people who had been at the bases at the time of the crash. Several of them still said it couldn’t have been a UFO that crashed. But one man _______45_______. He said it was a UFO and that the officers at Roswell had tried to hide the evidence. A friend of mine worked at the Roswell Army Air Field in New Mexico in the 1940s. He was a young officer there in 1947, at the time of the UFO crash. I say UFO crash because, even though people at the time said it was a balloon that crashed, my friend knows it wasn’t. This is what he told me: ‘I remember the crash very well. It was July, 1947, and _______46_______ we heard about the crash we rushed to see what had happened. We _______47_______ to see aeroplane wreckage as the base was used for experimental planes. But, no - what we saw was from a UFO. No doubt about it. And, the wreckage was hidden away really quickly. Then the officers told the media that an air balloon had crashed. It is _______48_______ that at the time, the base was sending up balloons to spy on other countries. However, my friends and I actually saw the bodies of aliens! Later the officers said we were _______49_______, but we weren’t. And, when a ufologist - you know, a UFO expert - came and interviewed me years later, I told him what I’d seen. In spite of it all sounding very weird, he believed me!’
Even though there have been further investigations, we still don’t know what really happened at Roswell that day.

Hi, It’s Venus. Please leave us alone!
After a scientific breakthrough, a message from a faraway neighbour.
ATTENTION PEOPLE OF EARTH
① Fine. The big secret is out. Your finest scientists have discovered there is life tens of millions of miles away - here, on the beautiful planet of Venus.
② Congratulations on the big discovery. We have a polite requirement:
③ Stay away. We’re serious. No missions to Venus, no exploratory spacecraft. That goes for your space-crazed billionaires as well as your governments. If we wake up one morning and look out and see Elon Musk (the founder of SpaceX and Tesla) wandering around in a spacesuit, we’re going to be really ticked off.
④ We mean no harm. We’re actually a very nice planet. It’s just that we’re scared by what you’ve done down there. Earth looks like a mess. You’ve got health crises, environmental crises, political crises. You keep fighting about face masks. No wonder so many of you want to leave Earth for another planet.
⑤ Leave us alone. Stay right where you are. We know you’d like it here. That’s what scares us. You’d all move to Venus in a minute. We’ve got beautiful weather, little traffic, a proper cost of living. On Venus, you can buy a three-bedroom for, like, $135,000.
⑥ Crazy, right? In all fairness, you’ve got some good stuff over there, too. Earth does have its desirable qualities. We’re jealous of the Grand Canyon, the Amazon rainforest, and the Great Wall. We’d give anything to meet Beyoncé.
⑦ But we live in a fragile (脆弱的) solar system. We can only deal with so much. If we start having you all up here, pretty soon, the Martians and Jupiterians are going to want to come, too. Trust us: you don’t want them sleeping on your couch, drinking all your beer.
⑧ We’ve been there before, and they left this place a mess. Cool your enthusiasm. We’re not your escape plan. Venus is not Earth 2.
⑨ We wish you the best in saving your planet. If not, try Pluto (冥王星). They’re pretty lonely and bored out there.
Sincerely,
Venus
50. The underlined phrase “ticked off” in paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to ___________.

51. What can we learn from paragraph 5?
A. The cost of living on the Earth is very high.
B. The living conditions on Venus are very good.
C. The housing prices on Venus are very expensive.
D. The space on Venus is not enough.
52. Venus wants Earth’s people to stay away because ____________.
A. Venus’ people are jealous of Earth’s people
B. Venus’ people are afraid of Martians and Jupiterians
C. Earth’s people will ruin Venus like they have ruined Earth
D. Earth’s people have explored space too much
53. Who probably wrote this article?
A. An environmentalist who insists on saving the Earth.
B. A scientist who specializes in life in space.
C. A businessman who runs a space transport company.
D. An astronaut who has made a few journeys into space.

There, they receive an envelope, containing a newspaper with details about the _______55_______ and information telling where to find clues. Visitors who take part in the event then travel to various shops, restaurants and other locations in the town, picking up clues as they go. Along the way, they meet and interview suspects played by local townspeople. Most Langley local people _______56_______ the Mystery Weekend in some way, a true community event.
Amateur detectives should solve the crime at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday and give their results. Then as everyone gathers, the murderer is found and arrested, and prizes are awarded for the correct answers. Being an astronaut sounds cool, doesn’t it? In space, they can do some pretty amazing things, like floating in zero gravity.
However, there are also plenty of things that astronauts can’t do because of their weightless environment, and that’s very sad. What’s worse, they can’t even let their s_______60_______ show - because it’s impossible to cry in zero gravity.
Of course, astronauts can still have tears. But crying is much more difficult in space. Without gravity, tears don’t flow downward out of the eyes like they do on the earth. This means that when you cry in space, your tears have n_______61_______ to go - they just stick to your eyes.
In May 2011, astronaut Andrew Feustel experienced this during one of his spacewalks. “Tears,” he said, “don’t fall off your eyes. They just stay there.” B_______62_______ making your vision unclear, this can also cause physical pain. Back on the earth, tears are supposed to bring comfort to the eyes. But that’s not the same in space. The space environment dries out astronauts’ eyes, and when tears suddenly w_______63_______ the eyes, it can cause pain rather than comfort. “My right eye is painful like crazy.” Feustel told his teammate during the walk.
Since gravity doesn’t work in space, astronauts need some extra help to get rid of the tears. Feustel chose to rub his eyes a_______64_______ his helmet to wipe the tears away. Another choice is to just wait - “When the tears get big enough, they simply break free of the eye and float around,” astronaut Ron Parise said.
There are lots of small things - things like crying that we are so used to on the earth. We usually take them for granted, until they become a problem in a completely different environment, like space. There, astronauts can’t talk to each other directly. They can’t eat or drink in normal ways. They can’t even burp (打嗝), because there is no gravity to hold the food d_______65_______ in their stomachs. If they do burp, they just end up throwing up everything in their stomachs, according to the UK National Space Center.
Thus, perhaps it’s only space e_______66_______ who can honestly say: “Gravity, you’re the best.”
Ⅳ. Answer the questions(根据短文内容回答下列问题)12分
First Contact
First contact is the term used to describe the first meeting between two previously unknown cultures. Imagine being the one to make first contact with an intelligent extraterrestrial (ET). How do you tell it that you are friendly? How do you make sure you don’t accidentally be rude to it? Scientists decided that the best way to get an ET’s attention is to use the language of mathematics.
In the early 1800s, one mathematician suggested cutting down parts of the dense forest in Siberia, Russia, in order to make giant patterns. Seen from space, they would show that intelligent beings lived on Earth. Another scientist proposed digging canals in the Sahara Desert. He wanted to make geometric (几何的) shapes visible even at night. Unfortunately, these ideas were too expensive to try. In 1953, a scientist named Lancelot Hogben created Astroglossa. This is a system of communication sort of like Morse code. It uses long and short pulses (脉冲) to represent math equations. This might get an ET’s attention, but it’s only good for talking about math.
Then astronomers Frank Drake and Carl Sagan thought up a way to send pictures made of zeros and ones using on and off radio pulses. When the patterns of pulses and silences are arranged on a grid (坐标网格) - like the lit and unlit pixels (像素点) on a computer screen - it makes an image like the one on the left.
We have sent pictures, recordings, and special radio messages into space to introduce ourselves to the rest of the universe. Maybe someday soon an alien life form will answer.
67. What does ‘first contact’ mean?
68. Why is using the language of mathematics the best way to get an ET’s attention?
69. Why didn’t scientists cut down parts of the forest in Siberia or dig canals in The Sahara Desert?
70. Scientists can’t use Astroglossa to talk about the history of earth, can they?
71. Who do we expect to receive answers from by sending messages into space?
72. Look at the image of the radio message. What do you think it is trying to say? Write at least two sentences.
Ⅴ. Writing(作文)9分
73. Suppose you are May. You and your friend Ben met with an accident on the road yesterday.
In 80-120 words, write about your experience according to the given picture.
