My Hero — Tu Youyou (Posted by Li Ming, Grade 9 Class Blog Week)
The person I admire most is Tu Youyou, the Chinese scientist who found a medicine against malaria (疟疾).
Her road began with an old book: More than 1,600 years ago, the Chinese doctor Ge Hong wrote down a simple way to treat fever with sweet wormwood (青蒿). When Tu Youyou’s team looked for a cure, it was this old sentence that led them to the cool-water method that saved the medicine.
Finding the cure was hard. The team tested over 2,000 old recipes, and Tu Youyou failed 190 times before success. She was often the first to try the new medicine on herself. Her work has saved millions of lives around the world, and in 2015 she won the Nobel Prize.
Our teacher writes at the end of the post: Old roots, new flowers.
◆ Anna: Does she only inspire future scientists? I am just good at drawing.
◆ Wang Lei: I want to know what made her try the 191st time.
39. The writer mentions Ge Hong’s old book to ________.
A. show where Tu’s key idea came from B. prove that the book was very old
C. teach readers to treat fever D. advise us to read more classics
40. The number 190 in the post shows ________.
A. how long the team worked B. the size of the old books
C. the price of the medicine D. how she never gave up
41. Which of the following can best answer Wang Lei’s question? ________.
A. Tu’s happy family life B. Tu’s belief in saving lives
C. the prize she won in 2015 D. Her hope of winning the big prize
42. “Old roots, new flowers” probably means ________
A. old trees should be protected well B. ancient books are hard to read today
C. ancient wisdom grew into a modern cure D. flowers in the past were more beautiful
C
More than 50 years ago, a famous British band called the Beatles split up (解散). They haven’t recorded any music together since then, but artificial intelligence (AI) has helped to write one last song of the Beatles. This is just one of the ways that AI is changing the world and how we live. As technology improves, the use of AI is spreading.
The invention of AI
In the 20th century, scientists began to wonder if computers could think like us. In 1950, the British expert Alan Turing made the “Turing test” to see whether a computer is intelligent. During this test, a human tester puts questions to a person and a computer at the same time. Both answer the questions, and the tester must decide which answers came from the human. If the tester can’t tell the two apart, the computer is intelligent. Many people believe AIs that can write, like the ChatGPT system, have already passed this test.
________________
AI is part of everyday life. It can study lots of information and from that work out what is likely to happen next. Self-driving cars, for example, use AI to make decisions. In hospitals, AI can study information about thousands of people to work out what might be wrong with a patient from their test results. Tools like ChatGPT can write computer code, stories and even solve maths problems.
The future of AI
Some people worry about how AI might influence their jobs. If computers can draw pictures, compose music and write articles, could artists, musicians and writers one day be replaced? Many people also fear that AI could be used to invent and spread lies. Even those who work in AI say there should be rules about how it is used. However, AI can spark (激发) creativity too. AI is very good at suggesting drugs to treat diseases, and can even invent new medicines. It can help us fight climate change by finding clever ways to reduce our energy use. One day it might even find a way to solve our energy needs completely.
43. In Paragraph 1, the writer leads into the topic by________
A. telling stories B. asking questions C. giving examples D. listing numbers
44. Which of the following can be put into ________?
A. The use of AI B. The problems of AI C. The safety of AI D. The predictions of AI
45. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To tell the importance of AI. B. To share the advantages of AI.
C. To explain the difficulties of AI. D. To introduce the information of AI.

The Super Power of YET!
In today’s world, many people want quick success, but real growth takes time and the right mindset. The mindset is how we think about our abilities. It plays a big role in our progress so it’s very important for us. There are two kinds of mindsets — a fixed mindset and a growth mindset.
Carol Dweck from Stanford University studied these two mindsets:
Growth Mindset:
People believe they can improve with effort and learning.
Fixed Mindset:
People believe their abilities are unchangeable.
She has found that having a growth mindset benefits our learning a lot.
Learning happens in four stages:
Growth Zone: They achieve their goals and take on bigger ones.
Learning Zone: They start getting new skills and confidence.
Fear Zone: People feel unsure or afraid of making mistakes and often give up.
Comfort Zone: Things feel easy, but no growth happens here.
One of her experiments is at Parkland Soccer Club. Her group teaches the players that mistakes are part of learning. If a player says, “I can’t do this”, that usually means he fears making mistakes. Then he is encouraged to say “I can’t do this, YET! But I can learn and improve.”
Challenges are ▲ for growth. Let’s believe in ourselves, work hard, and keep improving. The super power is “YET”.
