Ethan was the quietest student in Class Three. He sat at the back, said little, and hardly anyone noticed him. So when our class decided to make a wall newspaper for the school Culture Festival, nobody thought of asking him.
One week before the festival, Mia, who had designed the wall newspaper, broke her arm in a bike accident. The class fell silent. Our head teacher, Ms. Zhou, asked if anyone could help. For a long moment, nobody spoke. Then a low voice came from the back row: “I can try.”
It was Ethan. Twenty pairs of eyes turned to him. “I... I draw a little,” he said, his face red.
Ms. Zhou smiled. “Then let's see what you can do.”
From that day on, Ethan stayed in the classroom after school every afternoon. He worked with a box of colored chalk. First came the outline, then the letters, then a picture of our city at night — the old tower, the busy streets and a bridge over the river. When students passed by, they slowed down, whispered and watched. Some began bringing him water, and two classmates offered to help finish the corners.
On the morning of the festival, our wall newspaper won first prize. But that was not what people talked about most. They talked about the boy who had been invisible for two years and suddenly made the whole school look at him — not because he was loud, but because he had been quietly ready all along.
24.Why did nobody think of asking Ethan to help at first?
A.He was new to the class.
B.He was quiet and unnoticed.
C.He had broken his arm.
D.He disliked drawing.
25.What happened one week before the festival?
A.Mia got hurt in an accident.
B.Ethan won a prize.
C.The class changed its plan.
D.Ms. Zhou designed the wall newspaper.
26.What can we learn about Ethan from Paragraph 5?
A.He gave up halfway.
B.He worked alone all the time.
C.He gradually won his classmates' attention.
D.He asked for money for his work.
27.What is the best title for the text?
A.A Prize for Our Class
B.The Quiet Boy Who Shone
C.How to Make a Wall Newspaper
D.Mia's Unlucky Accident
C
Plants may not have ears or mouths, but they are not silent. In a recent study, scientists placed microphones near tomato and tobacco plants and recorded sounds that human ears cannot hear — short clicks 20 to 100 times an hour when the plants lacked water.
To make sure the sounds came from the plants themselves rather than the air or the pots, the team put the plants in soundproof (隔音的) boxes. They then trained a computer program to tell the difference between the clicks of thirsty plants and those of plants that had plenty of water. The program was right about 70% of the time.
Why do plants make these sounds? Scientists believe the clicks come from tiny air bubbles (气泡) forming and breaking inside the plants' stems when water is short. Other plants and even some insects may be able to “hear” them.
The finding could change farming. If farmers could “listen” to their fields with cheap sensors, they would know which plants need water first, saving both water and money. It may also help scientists understand how plants communicate with each other.
Of course, much work remains. The study was done in a lab, and researchers still need to find out whether plants in a real field make the same sounds — and whether any living thing actually listens.
28.What did the scientists find in their study?
A.Plants make sounds when short of water.
B.Tomato plants grow faster with music.
C.Plants are able to hear human speech.
D.Insects feed on plant stems.
29.Why did the team put the plants in soundproof boxes?
A.To help the plants grow faster.
B.To make sure the sounds came from the plants.
C.To keep insects away from the plants.
D.To record how fast the plants grew.
30.Why do plants make the clicking sounds?
A.To attract insects for food.
B.To warn other plants of danger.
C.Because air bubbles form and break in their stems.
D.Because they are growing very fast.
31.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.More research is needed to prove the finding.
B.The study has been done in real fields.
C.Farmers have already used the finding widely.
D.Plants never communicate with each other.
D
Imagine flying over the city traffic instead of sitting in it. That is the promise of eVTOLs — electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, often called “air taxis”. Unlike planes, they rise straight up like helicopters, but they are quieter, cheaper to run and produce no tailpipe emissions (尾气排放).
Several companies are testing these aircraft. A European maker has flown a two-seat model for more than 200 kilometres on a single charge; in China, a home-grown eVTOL has carried passengers on short test flights between city landmarks. Most models can carry two to four people with a pilot, though engineers hope to remove the pilot in the future.
Supporters say air taxis could cut a 60-minute drive to the airport down to 15 minutes, and they would be especially useful in medical emergencies, such as flying blood or a doctor to a remote village quickly.
However, big problems remain. Batteries are heavy, so the aircraft cannot fly very far; cities also lack the landing pads (停机场) and rules needed to keep the sky safe. And the price of a ticket must come down before ordinary people can use them.
Researchers are working on lighter batteries and smarter traffic systems. If they succeed, the sight of a quiet air taxi above the rooftops may not be far away.
32.What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A.The history of helicopters.
B.The test flights of eVTOLs.
C.The price of air taxis.
D.The rules for flying.
33.What does the author say about air taxis in medical emergencies?
A.They have replaced ambulances.
B.They are too expensive to use.
C.They could carry blood or doctors quickly.
D.They can only fly at night.
34.What problem do eVTOLs face?
A.They make too much noise.
B.They need landing pads and clear rules.
C.They carry too many passengers.
D.They pollute the air badly.
35.What is the author's attitude toward the future of air taxis?
A.Doubtful.
B.Unclear.
C.Hopeful.
D.Uninterested.

Last winter, our class took part in the “Warm Winter” activity: each group had to collect winter clothes for children in mountain areas. Our group of five agreed to finish the task in one week. Easy, we thought.
But things went wrong from the start. Two members forgot about it; one said his family had no old clothes; and when we finally met on Friday afternoon, we had only a small bag — three jackets, two sweaters and a pair of gloves. The deadline was Monday morning.
“That's embarrassing,” said Ben, looking at the bag. “Other groups have boxes full.”
I felt the same. Then Lina, who had been quiet, suddenly said, “Wait. My aunt runs a small shop that sells winter clothes. Maybe she can help... but she can't give them for free.”
We looked at each other. Then Ben reached into his pocket and took out fifty yuan — his pocket money for the whole week. “I don't need milk tea that much,” he said.
One by one, we all put our money together...

【Text 1】
W: How are you going to the airport tomorrow morning?
M: I'll take the subway — a taxi is too expensive and the bus is too slow.
【Text 2】
M: I still need to buy something for Lucy's birthday.
W: How about a concert ticket? She loves music.
M: Good idea. I'll book one online right now.
【Text 3】
M: This place opened last week, and the noodles here are really good.
W: Really? Then I must bring my parents here this weekend.
【Text 4】
M: You look tired, Grandma.
W: I cleaned the whole house this morning — the windows, the floors, everything.
【Text 5】
W: You've been working for three hours. You should take a break.
M: You're right. I'll go out for a short walk.
【Text 6】
W: Mr. Brown, I'm thinking about entering the English speech contest, but I'm afraid I'll forget my lines on stage.
M: That's normal. Practise in front of your classmates first — it helps a lot.
W: OK. Should I write the speech myself?
M: Yes. Choose a topic you really care about. Last year's winner talked about her grandfather's garden.
W: I see. When should I hand in the video?
M: Before next Friday.
【Text 7】
M: What are you doing this weekend, Anna?
W: My family is going to the countryside to pick oranges. Would you like to join us?
M: Sounds fun! How far is the farm?
W: About half an hour by car. We'll leave at eight in the morning.
M: Should I bring anything?
W: Just comfortable shoes. My mum will prepare lunch for us.
【Text 8】
M: Lily, are you going to join the science club this term?
W: I'd love to, but I'm already in the school choir and the basketball team. I have little free time.
M: I see. The club meets every Wednesday afternoon. Maybe you can just come to the science festival in November.
W: That's a good idea. Is it open to all students?
M: Yes. And this year there will be a robot show and a paper-plane competition.
W: Great! I'll mark it on my calendar.
【Text 9】
M: Hi, Maria. How was your exchange year in Nanjing?
W: Amazing! I lived with a Chinese family. At first I couldn't use chopsticks well, and I missed home a lot.
M: What helped you most?
W: Cooking with my host mother. We made dumplings every Sunday. And I joined the school Tai Chi club.
M: Do you still keep in touch with them?
W: Of course. We video-call every month, and I'm planning to go back next summer.

M: Good morning, everyone. Here is an announcement about our School Food Festival. It will be held on the school playground this Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Each class will set up a food stand and sell one traditional dish. Our class will make jiaozi — you can help by bringing some vegetables tomorrow. All the money we raise will go to the local children's hospital. Last year we raised 3,000 yuan, and this year we hope to reach 5,000. Please remember to bring your own bowls and chopsticks to reduce waste. Let's work together and have fun!

【答案】B
A.To help the plants grow faster.
B.To make sure the sounds came from the plants.
C.To keep insects away from the plants.
D.To record how fast the plants grew.
【解析】细节理解题。由第二段“To make sure the sounds came from the plants themselves rather than the air or the pots”可知,隔音箱是为了确认声音确实来自植物本身,故选B。
30.Why do plants make the clicking sounds?
【答案】C
A.To attract insects for food.
B.To warn other plants of danger.
C.Because air bubbles form and break in their stems.
D.Because they are growing very fast.
【解析】细节理解题。由第三段“the clicks come from tiny air bubbles forming and breaking inside the plants' stems when water is short”可知,声音源于缺水时茎内小气泡的形成与破裂,故选C。
31.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
【答案】A
A.More research is needed to prove the finding.
B.The study has been done in real fields.
C.Farmers have already used the finding widely.
D.Plants never communicate with each other.

【答案】B
A.The history of helicopters.
B.The test flights of eVTOLs.
C.The price of air taxis.
D.The rules for flying.

34.What problem do eVTOLs face?
【答案】B
A.They make too much noise.
B.They need landing pads and clear rules.
C.They carry too many passengers.
D.They pollute the air badly.
【解析】细节理解题。由第四段“cities also lack the landing pads and rules needed to keep the sky safe”可知,城市缺少停机场和安全规则,故选B。
35.What is the author's attitude toward the future of air taxis?
【答案】C
A.Doubtful.
B.Unclear.
C.Hopeful.
D.Uninterested.
【解析】观点态度题。末段说研究人员正研发更轻的电池和更智能的交通系统,“the sight... may not be far away”流露出乐观期待,故选C。

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1:
On Saturday morning, we walked into Lina's aunt's shop with all the money we had.
Paragraph 2:
On Monday morning, we carried two big boxes into the classroom.
【参考范文】
Paragraph 1:
On Saturday morning, we walked into Lina's aunt's shop with all the money we had. Lina's aunt listened to our story and smiled. “You've done something better than simply buying new clothes,” she said, and led us to the back room, where boxes of winter clothes were waiting — gloves, scarves and thick coats. She gave us a price much lower than the market. With our money plus her help, we filled two big boxes, and she even added ten pairs of new socks for free. It took us the whole afternoon to sort and fold everything, but nobody complained.
Paragraph 2:
On Monday morning, we carried two big boxes into the classroom. The whole class went quiet, and even our teacher raised her eyebrows. When she opened one box and saw the neatly folded clothes and the short letter we had written to the children, she read it aloud. “From Class Three, with warm wishes,” she finished. Everyone clapped. Ben grinned at me and whispered, “Not so embarrassing after all.” Looking at our small team, I understood: what we had collected was not just clothes, but the proof that five ordinary students, working together, could turn a small bag of worry into two boxes of hope.
亮点表达:much lower than the market(远低于市场价)、sort and fold(分类叠放)、the proof that...(……的证明)、turn A into B(把A变成B)。
