I was a shy girl when I was in school. I often stayed quiet during classes. Every time a teacher asked me a question, my voice would tremble (颤抖) and I would speak as little as possible. I’d then stay in my seat, feeling smaller and smaller, and wait quietly until the class was over.
This situation continued through my middle school years and into grade 10. As time passed by, I felt more and more sad and lost. I even started to think that maybe I was meant to just be shy and unnoticed. Everyone else would have fun, but not me.
Just before starting grade 11, I complained (抱怨) to my sister about how I was feeling. “I am so bored.”
She replied, “It’s your fault. Do something!”
I always knew I wanted to belong to a group and I understood that I had to start somewhere. Speaking up seemed like the first step I had to take.
One day, we had a small group discussion in class and I pulled all my courage together to share my ideas with everyone. Little by little, it started to have an effect (影响) and my classmates recognized my presence. Sometimes, they even replied to what I was saying. Suddenly, I felt I was part of the discussion. This is how I started to make friends- friends who liked to hear what I had to say. I finally felt accepted.
Finding my voice was hard, but it helped me find the strength to be the person I wanted to be. Now that I’m older, I can easily say this has made all the difference.

Police dogs can help police officers find dangerous things or even missing people. But how do they learn to do their jobs? First, they need to learn how to sniff out (嗅出) trouble. Second, they must learn to communicate with their human partners. It takes some time to learn the skills.
Do police dogs have to be tall and strong? Well, in Weifang, Shandong Province, a cute corgi Fu Zai, whose name means “lucky boy”, has become China’s first corgi police dog! With a lovely smile and short legs, he quickly got popular on the Internet.
Fu Zai was born in 2023. When Fu Zai was just one month old, his owner took him to a park to play. There, a police dog trainer noticed Fu Zai. He found Fu Zai was not only cute but also had some good qualities (特质) for a police dog. After considering carefully, the owner agreed to send Fu Zai to the police dog training base.
Fu Zai practiced hard every day. There were many skills he needed to learn and he learned quickly. After about a year of strict training, Fu Zai officially became a police dog.
Many people might think that “short-legged” dogs couldn’t become police dogs. However, Fu Zai changed their ideas. In fact, his short legs allow him to easily get into and search narrow spaces. We believe that Fu Zai will become an excellent police dog in the future.
26. What can police dogs do?

A. ①②④ B. ①③④ C. ①②③ D. ②③④

28. What is the main difference between Fu Zai and most police dogs?
A. He needs to learn sniffing skills. B. His size helps search narrow spaces.
C. He can communicate with humans. D. He requires long-term training.
29. What is the main idea of the third paragraph?
A. Fu Zai’s popularity on the Internet. B. The importance of police dog training.

China has made great progress in controlling deserts over the past 30 years. Through hard work and smart plans, large areas of deserts have been turned into green lands.
One famous example is the Kubuqi Desert in Inner Mongolia. This success story shows how deserts can become useful lands. By planting special grasses and trees, people have fixed moving sand and increased forest coverage from 5% to 53% since 1988. Local farmers now grow fruits like grapes in this “green wall”, which also helps their income.
Science and technology play key roles in this fight. The government has used both traditional and modern methods. In Ningxia, workers lay wheat straw (稻草) in checkerboard patterns (棋盘格) to hold sand. This low-cost sand-fixing technology is now used in 13 countries. Satellites and drones (无人机) help monitor plant growth across about 176 million hectares of protected land.
More than 200 million people have joined tree-planting activities. Since 2000, China has reduced desert areas by over 2,000 square kilometers yearly—the fastest rate in the world. The “Great Green Wall” project aims to plant about 35 billion trees by 2050.
China’s experience brings hope to other countries. These efforts not only improve the environment but also share knowledge globally. China has trained over 2,000 experts (专家) from Africa and the Middle East , showing that deserts can be changed into rich land with determination.
